An update in the courtroom BY ANN MEAD ASH

T

he courtroom for Magisterial District 02-3-06 has been located at 745B E. Main St., New Holland, since 1984. Judge R ichard Reeser was the first to preside at the bench, followed by Judge Carl Good and then Judge Rod Hartman, who began his judgeship in 2000. “I took over in 2018, and we did a court expansion and remodeled (at that time),” said Judge Jonathan W. Heisse. The judge’s bench, however, remained unchanged. “I knew what I wanted to make it look 21st century,” said Heisse, who pointed out the screens that had been added to update courtroom technology. He also wanted the top of the bench lowered for a better visual of the courtroom over which he presides. In 2022, Heisse spoke to Bob Winegardner, who was then chairman of the Garden Spot Village (GSV) Wood Shop operating

committee. “(Winegardner) made a commitment to the judge to update his courtroom,” said Larry Knepper, who joined forces with fellow GSV Wood Shop member Rolf Fehrenbach to complete the desk. In mid-summer of 2023, Knepper, who was manager and operating chair of the GSV Wood Shop at that time, and Fehrenbach met with Heisse in the courtroom. “(Judge Heisse) wanted it to look more modern,” recalled Knepper. He and Fehrenbach took photos of the dark brown paneled bench. “They had the vision,” said Heisse. Fehrenbach created a sample of the paneling with an added top section painted gray so that Heisse could envision the finished desk. The design used lighter-colored paneling, lowered the top section by two inches, and extended the bench on both sides. In early December 2023, when Heisse left for a southern vacation, Knepper and Fehrenbach used their skills to complete the design, See GSV pg 7 Rolf Fehrenbach (left) and Larry Knepper (right) recently built this bench for Judge Jonathan Heisse.

The Torch to host open mic anniversary

For the serious deer hunter “Hearing a deer biolog ist (speak) is pretty significant when it comes to understanding how to better hunt deer,” said Kevin Horning, member of the Ephrata Area Churches annual New Holland Sportsman Banquet committee. The guest speaker for this year’s event will be C.J. Winand, “Hunting Whitetails” columnist for Bowhunter magazine. As the committee approaches nearly two decades of

organizing the event, finding an appealing speaker is always of the utmost importance, and Horning noted that the committee was pleased to secure Winand for this year’s banquet. The family-friendly banquet will be held on Friday, March 8, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 Tower Road, New Holland. Doors will open at 5 p.m. so attendees can view vendor and other displays. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. According to Horning, 60 or more door prizes, which in the C.J. Winand will be the speaker at

Registration for participating musicians will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by live music at 7 p.m. Open mic began more than a decade ago when Zimmerman approached Ed Kurtz, director of The Torch, for permission to

the annual Ephrata Area Churches

host the event. “My family sang at retirement homes (and other venues), and I always enjoyed open mic. I wanted to see a Christian open mic and not just secular music,” Zimmerman recalled. “I knew Ed and I brought up the idea to hold the open mic on a weeknight, but he said it has to be a Sunday night because a lot of churches don’t have (activities) on Sunday nights.” Today, an average of six groups perform during open See The Torch pg 5

speaker on the NRA’s Great American Hunters tour. He also serves on the conservation committee for the Pope and Young club board of directors for the National Bowhunter Education Foundation. Winand is known for presenting information heavy with data for the pur pose of elevating a hunter’s ability to make good judgments. Banquet organizers are encouraging attendees to come prepared to take notes, and they have referred to Winand’s talks as “Advanced Deer Hunting 101.” Information presented will be based on field data research conducted by Winand or other wildlife biologists, which is then presented in a way that allows hunters to use scientific results in their own hunting techniques with the goal of harvesting bucks. This year’s dinner menu will include broasted chicken, ham balls, potatoes, peas and carrots, and pie and ice cream for dessert. The Ephrata Area Churches group that sponsors the event includes about a dozen churches located in Ephrata and Akron. There is a fee to attend the dinner, and a limited number of tickets are available. Tickets may be purchased at www.event brite.com by searching for “New Holland Sportsman Banquet.” Readers who have questions may call 717-738-0963.

mic, including Zimmerman and his son, Ryan. “(The number of groups) varies. Sometimes we have more or less,” Zimmerman noted. “On Sunday, (Jan. 7), only three people signed up, so we sat in a circle together and sang, so that was a little different.” The Torch, which offers a small coffeehouse setting, includes a small stage, room for tuning instruments, a keyboard for pianists, four microphones with stands, sheet music stands and stools. There are guidelines that musicians are asked to follow on open mic night. For example, all music must be performed acoustically, and no drum sets are permitted. A cappella music is also encouraged. “I am not against electric guitars and drums, but it’s a small setting and we don’t want anything that is too loud,” Zimmerman shared. He added that setting up amplifiers and other devices between

performers would be time consuming. There are also requirements about conservative attire for both men and women. “I came from a more conservative Mennonite background and there is not an opportunity in the church setting to show your talent,” said Zimmerman. “(Open mic) is an opportunity to get people (to perform). I have conservative dress standards because I want people to feel welcome.” Musicians may perform

music they have composed as well as traditional hymns or songs. “Some people play original music. One lady sings hymns. There is a variety, and that’s fine,” Zimmerman shared. “It is open to everyone. You don’t have to audition or anything.” Through the years the event has grown in size with additional musicians and audience members. “The first three years it was hard to get people to come out,” Zimmerman noted. “My family had enough songs to keep going, but we didn’t want it to be just about us. After a while, we got a group to come in and they did a lot of original songs, and they brought in an audience. That was a big boost.” Generally, musicians perform two or three songs, but if there is time, they can present a second set. “It’s nice for musicians to play to an audience and not just other musicians. I would also like to have more listeners coming and enjoy the music,” Zimmerman added. Participation and attendance is free; however, a collection box is available, with all donations given to The Torch, which provides the venue free of charge. An added bonus is that people may socialize after the music or ask the musicians questions. “Some people bring food and stay and hang around and eat and talk to each other. That is something I never expected to happen,” Zimmerman added. The Torch Community Center is located in the Clock Tower Plaza, 2846 Main St., Morgantown. Prima T heatre, 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, will host the world premiere of “Off the Yellow Brick Road” on Friday, Feb. 9, to Saturday, Feb. 24. The event is an immersive pop concer t theatr ical experience. Six years ago, the founder and executive artistic producer of Prima Theatre, Mitch Nugent, star ted thinking about how the story of Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz” would play out in the age of digital technology. In this modern version, performed in the round, Dorothy is fed up with the constant barrage of digital interfaces, advertising, and superficiality around her. She longs for a more profound and meaningful life, even if it means straying away from the yellow brick road. Dorothy and the other well-known characters embark on a journey solely through pop music hits with lyrics that push the story forward. Community Foundation to mark 100th anniversary Lancaster County Community Foundation will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2024 with the theme “One Year to Change the Next 100.” For the last century, Lancaster County residents have made charitable legacy gifts into the foundation’s endowment. These gifts were invested and have grown over time, creating resources that support the community today. These donors’ foresight and commitment have led to more than $60 million being distributed to support local causes since 1924, and they were the spark that ignited the ExtraGive, the Community Foundation’s signature event, which has generated $100 million in donations for local organizations. This year, the Community Foundation will invite people to share their ideas for the future and to be part of investing in Lancaster County for the next 100 years. A series of activities in 2024 will invite people across the county to be part of the celebration. More than $1 million dollars in Shaping Tomorrow grant awards and scholarships will be distributed in four future-focused categories: Creative Expression, Well-Being &

Millersville-based wildlife rehabilitation center Acorn Acres will host its annual Groundhog Day celebration on Friday, Feb. 2, in downtown Lancaster. Complimentar y snacks and beverages will be available at Ville & Rue, and Poppy-themed items such as pillows, tea towels and tote bags will be available to purchase. Once the party moves to the Imperial, guests may enjoy various family-friendly activities including groundhog-themed

winning card. At 6 p.m., an educational program featuring Elliott will be held to offer guests information on groundhogs, followed by Elliott’s second prognostication at 7 p.m. for this year’s National Football L ea g ue championship. Tickets for a prize drawing will be available until the winning numbers are selected at 8 p.m., and food and drinks will be available to purchase from a cash bar before the party wraps up. Trad i t i o n a l l y, A co r n Acres celebrates Groundhog Day with a scavenger hunt in Lancaster city. The event was created in 2021 by the organization’s founder, Betsy Shank, who sought a way to support local businesses in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I happened to have an Emmy-nominated and very cute groundhog, so I used Poppy’s popularity to draw people to downtown businesses,”

Shank said. Poppy acquired national fame after she appeared alongside Bill Murray in a commercial for the National Football League championship game in 2020. Shank decided to change the format of the event after Elliott took over as Acorn Acres’ mascot. Although Poppy was always comfortable in the limelight, Elliott is a younger and much more reserved groundhog. With this in mind, Shank redesigned the event to still support local businesses without overwhelming Elliott. Several businesses located in Quarryville, Conestoga and other parts of the Southern End have donated prizes and other items for the celebration, including Britain Hill Winery, Conestoga Cookies and Hempfield Botanicals. Acorn Acres’ facility is located in Millersville, but its service area covers most of the county. In the past, the organization has taken in animals that were found as far south as Wakefield, and Shank has assisted wildlife centers in other counties by taking in one of their rescues. “We want people to just come out, be happy and enjoy Groundhog Day,” Shank said. “This all started to get people smiling, even from behind a mask. We’re still doing that.” For more information, visit www.acornacreswr .com/groundhog-day.
