SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVIII • NO 6
Family Firefighting History hen Stefan Kuenzli was a young boy, he said he wanted to be a firefighter. Although Stefan took a few career turns before joining Manheim Township Fire Rescue (MTFR) as an employee in 2019, he has been a volunteer with Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) since the age of 14, and he serves GSFR as deputy fire chief today. Stefan now works full-time for MTFR and volunteers up to 12 hours a week at GSFR, an effort he claims is not unusual among MTFR’s paid firefighters. “Almost all the full-time people at Township also volunteer in their home communities,” he said. Firefighting is a tradition in Stefan’s family. His father, Ernie Kuenzli, who passed away in 2019, was a lifetime member at GSFR, joining in 1975. His uncle, Randy Kuenzli, recently stepped down from the chief’s position at a volunteer station in Maryland, having previously served as chief of the Southern Manheim

rescue has changed dramatically. “Vehicles are always changing,” he said. “Compare a new vehicle to one from 20 years ago when we have to cut it apart. It’s a lot more involved and technical than it used to be.” Construction has changed as well, and that affects how building fires are fought. “We don’t deal with standard dimensional lumber,” said Stefan. “They are making engineered gluedtogether joists and stairways that burn away a lot faster, so you have only a third or a quarter of the time to get out of the house.” He noted that there are special dangers for firefighters in the smoke and chemicals they deal with in a building fire. Stefan compared firefighting to playing football. “It’s a team sport with individual assignments,” he said. “Everybody on the offense has the same goal, but the wide receiver’s job is very different from the lineman’s job. If everybody does their job right, things go smoothly.” Readers who would like to learn more about GSFR may visit www.gsfr39.net, call 717-354-8311, or email chief@gsfr39.net.

The speaker will be Tracy Breen, a full-time outdoor writer, speaker, and marketing consultant. Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. so attendees can view vendor and other displays. Dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. A number of door prizes will be given out at the event as well. Breen is from Muskegon, Mich., where he was raised by a family that included a number of hunters and trappers, who introduced him to their love of outdoor adventures when he was quite young. Stefan received his firefighter one certification in 2007, firefighter two in 2008, and his Emergency Medical Technician certification in 2009. Stefan graduated from Garden Spot High School in 2004. Before graduating, Stefan attended Lancaster County Career and Technology Center to study residential carpentry, and he worked briefly for a framer before spending 15 years at 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Service in New Holland. Stefan said that both working on fire trucks and learning about building construction have been valuable in firefighting. “It’s a good base knowledge to have,” he said. Stefan said that the art of firefighting and rescue has changed significantly since he joined. “It was a different ballgame when I joined 21 years ago than it is now,” he said, noting that training requirements have increased and that vehicle

A program for sixth- through eighth-grade students will also be starting at Martin Meylin Middle School in Lampeter-Strasburg School District. “We would like to get the clubs all restarted,” said Lisa Kilgore, director of CEF of Lancaster County, who noted that more than 30 clubs were meeting in the county prior to the onset of COVID-19. “We had 17 clubs last fall, plus a Zoom club, and we will have more than 20 this spring,” noted Kilgore. “It’s gradually rebuilding.” CEF is an international orga-

Clubs are open to any child who attends the school where the club meets. Usually a program for students in first grade through the highest grade level at the school is offered, but in some districts kindergarten clubs are available. Kilgore noted that each club is sponsored by a partner church. “When we finish our 14 weeks (of club meetings), we want (children) to stay connected if they want to. volunteering can be rewarding to those who take the opportunity to help guide young lives. “We want to be encouraging to kids and families right now,” she said. “It is a blessing to us to be able to do that.” Kilgore noted that she is grateful for God’s provision over the last few years. “Financially, God has been bringing support,” she said. “He has kept us going in better ways than we could have imagined.” Those who wish to sign a child up for a Good News Club may visit www.ceflancaster.org and click on the registration tab to find the elementary school where their child would attend. The evening of prose and music will feature songs from the personal collection of English author Jane Austen. Performers will include pianist Laura Klein, soprano Megan Poff and narrator Kathy Casey Becker, with guest appearances by tenor Jay Poff, violinist Julia Hansen, cellist Adam Hansen, flautist Tyson Severin and harpist Janet Witman. The program will feature period costumes. Klein founded “The Jane Austen Playlist” in 2019 to pay tribute to the historical music of the Austen family. Sportsmen’s Banquet from pg 1 a living trapping into the late 1970s, when he turned to taxidermy. His father’s influence led Breen to choose a career in the great outdoors. Raised in a Christian home, Breen sought to connect his faith with his work in a significant way. He has
served as editor of God’s Great Outdoors Internet Outdoor Magazine, and he has written for New Pioneer, Petersen’s Bowhunting, and Outdoor Life. He has experienced hunting, fishing, and speaking throughout North America. Breen has cerebral
palsy, which affects much of his right side. W hen he speaks at game dinners and other outdoor-themed events, he often discusses the struggles and disappointments he has been dealt, sharing how God has used his life as he overcomes
physical challenges. There is a fee to attend the dinner, and a limited number of tickets are available. Tickets may be purchased at www.eventbrite.com by searching for “Sportsmen’s Outreach Banquet” or by calling 717-738-0963.
Budget-Friendly Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas Each February, people buy gifts for their sweethearts and create romantic memories through fine dining and decadent desserts on Valentine’s Day. People looking to save money this year may consider the following suggestions,
janesflowers.com
which focus on being creative and focusing on the sentiment involved. While a card may be the smallest purchase on one’s shopping list, an individual can still save an average of $3 to $5 on a card by making one themselves or sending a free digital greeting. Restaurants are popular options for couples on Valentine’s Day, but they can be busy and prices may be higher this year due to inflation. Couples may look for limited prix fixe menus at some restaurants, or they could make a meal at home using less-costly ingredients. People do not have to spend a fortune to make an impression with gifts. Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but other stones are often less costly. Giving a birthstone is an alternative. If gold is out of one’s price range, many sterling silver options are just as beautiful. In addition, consider warehouse retailers for jewelry purchases, as they may have lower costs. The cost of roses definitely goes up near Valentine’s Day, so consider giving another flower. Lilies can be lovely or maybe that special someone has a signature flower. A flowering plant, which will cost less than many bouquets and will last far beyond Valentine’s Day if given care, is another alternative to consider. Sweet treats are the name of the game, but many popular chocolate boxes can be pricey this time of year. By planning ahead, a stockpile of chocolates from Halloween or Christmas can be acquired. Floral wire or pipe cleaners can turn bite-sized packages into a handmade chocolate bouquet. Another option is to purchase various chocolate bars and package them with hot chocolate, chocolate cookies, and other decadent items in a themed gift basket.

The Arts at Millersville will present several events in February to launch the spring season. All shows will be held at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Millersville University requires face coverings for both fully vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals during indoor events and performances at all on-campus venues and at the Ware Center. We The People First Friday will present a staged reading, “Under Freedom’s Sky,” at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, in Steinman Hall. The multimedia presentation features dramatic readings of authentic stories about Lancaster County’s involvement in anti-slavery movements and the Underground Railroad. The stories explore the dangers that African Americans faced as they navigated their passage to freedom, and helped others to do the same, as well as the role of faith and religion in the movement. A discussion will follow the performance. The event is free, with no ticket required. The reading of “Under Freedom’s Sky” will be held in conjunction with an art exhibit, “The Road to Freedom Takes Many Paths,” which will open in the Regitz Gallery with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 4. Serving Up Hope BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In March of 2016, Carol Heth was on a bus heading to New York City when inspiration struck. Having participated in an outdoor farm-to-table dinner, Carol thought she could take the idea one step further. “I said, ‘How about if we do a dinner in the field on our property and at the same time, we help some people who are going through health hardships?’” she recalled. By April of 2016, Carol had rounded up a team to help bring her vision to life. By June, the group had three potential beneficiaries of the dinner and by the fall, the first meal was held. “I wasn’t sure how it was going to go or what we’d be able to do to help the recipients, and I thought it was a once-anddone thing, but it wasn’t,” she stated. Having raised more than $5,600 for each of the first year’s beneficiaries, Carol knew she was onto something. Seven years later, the non-

profit Lancaster County Field of Hope has not only held annual dinners each fall to help people who are facing unexpected medical issues but has expanded to raise funds throughout the year. “To date, we have helped 26 recipients and their families, and we are just shy of giving $235,000 away to individuals,” Carol remarked. Carol and her husband, Pete, are no strangers to helping others. Throughout the years, the lifelong Lancaster County residents, who live in Columbia, have organized fundraisers for friends who needed help. They also open the kitchen at their 1860s farmhouse to hands-on cooking experiences and rent out properties on their six-acre lot through Airbnb. Thanks to their local connections, the Heths have been able to rely on donations for almost all of the food and services needed for their annual dinner.
Carol and Pete Heth
“We are an all-volunteer organization, and the recipients get to keep all of the funds we raise after expenses,” Carol said. “We try to keep those expenses as low as possible.” This month, Lancaster County Field of Hope will be the beneficiary of proceeds from trivia night at Wacker Brewing Company in Willow Street on Wednesday evenings. On Saturday, April 2, Hope@22 will feature a silent auction at Garth gallery in Columbia. At the auction, the organization will reveal its 2022 recipients, Heth noted, adding that there may be up to six beneficiaries. On Friday, May 6, the organization will hold its third annual golf tournament at Foxchase Golf Club in Stevens, and on Saturday, Sept. 10, it will host its seventh annual benefit dinner at the Heths’ home. Carol emphasized that the success of Lancaster County Field of Hope relies on support from both her team and the community. “I could not do this without my family and the people on the board,” she Guests write messages of encouragement to recipients at a said, referring in part to her Field of Hope dinner.
three grown children and five grandchildren, who help with the organization. “As our name says, we are Lancaster County based. We’re helping local individuals.” She encourages everyone to support Lancaster County Field of Hope, no matter how small the effort. “I always say $1 is $1 more than we had yesterday,” she commented. “Every dollar matters.” For more information on Lancaster County Field of Hope, visit www.lancofield ofhope.com.
