The About Child Trauma (ACT) Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Mount Joy, offers trauma-informed training to organizations and professionals with the goal of helping children to heal from the effects of early trauma. Executive director Lark Eshleman, MLS, MS, Ph.D., who specializes in the field of trauma and attachment, wants people to know that they can all have a hand in fostering resilience - the antidote to child trauma. “What we know is that relationships are key, and one caring adult can change a person’s life,” stated Eshleman. “That person doesn’t need to live with them but needs to be consistent and safe. To be that person for a child in need is a gift beyond measure.” According to Eshleman, a 1998 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) demonstrated how traumatic childhood events can be the root cause of many social, emotional, and cognitive impairments that contribute to an increase in high-risk health behaviors, chronic health conditions, emotional and behavioral dysfunction, and early death. Examples of ACEs are physical, emotional, or sexual abuse; physical or emotional neglect; and forms of household dysfunction such as divorce, mental illness, substance abuse, a parent being treated violently, and having an incarcerated relative. “The more adverse childhood experiences you have, the more in danger of certain physical, psychological, emotional, and behavioral issues (you are),” summarized Eshleman. In 2019, trauma-informed education became mandatory for staff at all Pennsylvania public schools with the passing of Senate Bill 144. The new legislation acknowledged that ACEs have a potentially long-term effect on a child’s functioning and wellbeing and implemented requisite training to help school board members, administrators, and faculty members to identify the signs and symptoms of trauma in students. Eshleman, who was named to the state’s Trauma Informed Practices in Schools Workgroup, and other professionals from the ACT Foundation lead workshops
for educators, parents, representatives of professional agencies, and others who are interested. In the fall of 2019, Eshleman led a trauma-informed training for the non-teaching staff at Donegal School District, and plans are underway for a series of interactive parenting workshops in February at the Milanof-Schock Library in Mount Joy. “Behaviors are often not what they seem,” stated Eshleman, who has worked as a children’s librarian, school psychologist, and principal and has served overseas with children traumatized in the war in the Balkans. Eshleman explained that implementing a trauma-informed approach as an educator or other person who works with children and youths involves asking questions about the root cause of an individual’s behavior. Depending on the answer, more questions must be asked to determine how the adult can best work with the child to address the behavior. Eshleman encourages adults to stay positive and open-minded in their interactions with others. Anyone interested in partnering with the ACT Foundation or in hosting one of the organization’s courses is welcome to contact Jeanne Dailey, director of operations, at 717-808-7134 or jeannedailey@gmail.com. ACT Foundation courses, which are all approved for Act 48 credits, include Introduction to Emotional Trauma, Trauma in the Classroom, Trauma and Sensory Processing Disorder, an interactional workshop for advanced skill building, and a two-part series on both Complex Trauma and Mindfulness. More information is available at www.aboutchildtrauma.org or on the “About Child Trauma” Facebook page.

April Koppenhaver and her husband, Charles E. Gaul II, already had a dog, Valentino, when a second canine came into their care. Milo was a rescue dog, so his age was undetermined. The beagle mix had been adopted by a family member, but after more than a decade, Milo’s owner developed allergies and sought a new home for the beloved pet. Valentino and Milo were used to being the only dogs in their homes, so Koppenhaver moved Milo into Mulberry Art Studios, the gallery she founded. Milo quickly became a favorite of visitors. “He was always smiling,” Koppenhaver recalled. “He’d sit there, and you’d hear” - she tapped her finger on a wooden counter. “He was thumping his tail to greet people.”

Toward the end of his life, Milo developed cancer, and he died in November 2018. Gaul, who also had serious health issues, died at age 93 on Jan. 5, 2019, shortly before the couple’s 10th anniversary. In working through her grief from the two losses, Koppenhaver thought about how to commemorate Gaul and Milo. Thus, the Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition was created. The inaugural show last year featured 197 pieces of art related to pets. “There were all kinds of animals and some we couldn’t recognize,” Koppenhaver said. Styles ranged from the serious to the whimsical, including a cat wearing high-heeled shoes. “This was the first time we called for (a range of skill, from) children to professionals. We had refrigerator art next to $750 pieces,” she added.
HOURS: Mon. - Fri. 9-5; Sat. 9-4
The second annual “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition will be held this spring at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Entries are being accepted, with a deadline of Wednesday, April 1. Initially, the deadline had been a month earlier, but gallery curator and publicist Stephanie Cole explained that an extra month had been added so local art teachers have more time to participate with their classes. During the application process, digital images of artwork may be submitted. The originals do not have to be brought to the studio until the week of April 20, Cole said. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 1, from 5 to 9 p.m. A best-in-show award and a people’s choice award will be bestowed in the student and adult categories. Entries will be juried to ensure that the pieces in the show have theme-related subjects and that they are appropriate to be viewed by audiences of all ages. “(The subject) should be an animal that they’ve cared for, that they’ve known and loved,” Koppenhaver said. Application to the show is free, but a cost has been set to participate in the show. The
participation fee will be waived for one piece for each artist who is a high school student or younger, with a reduced rate, as compared to the adult fee schedule, for additional entries. The artwork may be sold through the exhibition, and Mulberry Art Studios will take a commission. The proceeds will be donated to The Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Last year’s show raised $1,000 for the organization. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and aims to facilitate the adoption of unwanted animals. Cole provided a statement from foundation volunteer Ellen Stark, who said, “(Donations received will help in a variety of ways), from basic needs such as food and bedding to providing medical care to dogs that, in a lot of instances, may have been neglected, abused, or never seen a veterinarian. The Sebastian Foundation relies on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future. No amount is too small to make a difference.” Readers may email Cole at Stephanie.MulberryArt@gmail.co m for details on the submission process.
Mulberry Art Studios founder April Koppenhaver displays a representation of her late dog, Milo, and holds her pet, Valentino. The Charles E. Gaul II and Milo “We Love Our Pets” contest and exhibition is currently accepting pet-themed artwork for a show that will open on May 1.

In wild fourth quarter, the Barons outscored the Spartans 23-22 after trailing 21-15 at the half and 35-21 after three periods. Zentner posted up 10 baskets and went 9-for-13 at the foul line for his 29. Darius Wallace added another 10 points from the field. Trey Grube and Cam Eberly scored 11 and 10 for Central, respectively. Central fell to 4-7 (8-11 overall). In their previous game, the Spartans faced L-L League rival Cocalico on Thursday, January 23. The Eagles won the game at Garden Spot by a 46-33 score after getting off to a quick start. Trey Griffin made three long-range baskets and finished with a gamehigh 19 points for the Eagles. Zentner led Garden Spot with eight
points while Weaver and Cory Ream each netted seven points. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Spartans girls’ basketball squad helped head coach Kevin Gensemer reach a milestone in a Section Three win on Thursday, January 23. Garden Spot held on for a 39-36 victory over Cocalico on the road as Gensemer recorded career win number 100. The Spartans outscored the Eagles 19-4 in the second quarter and increased the eight-point halftime lead to an 11-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter. “We needed a big defensive stop to hold on for the victory,” Gensemer said. “I am very proud of the way the team is playing down the stretch with only three games to go.” Olivia Usner scored 13 points, hitting three three-point baskets. Taylor Soehner led the team with 14 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Karli Stoltzfus scored nine points and grabbed seven boards. “I’m so proud of this group, who worked extra hard to get me that 100th win,” he added. “It was at my alma mater.”
On Tuesday, January 28, it was Manheim Central who came up with a big second quarter, outscoring Spot 15-7 to grab a 27-16 halftime lead. The Barons went on to post a 48-30 win. Garden Spot fell to 2-9 in the league. “It was a tough night with Central jumping out to a 7-0 lead and we went ice cold shooting,” said Gensemer. “We made some unforced turnovers and they went on a 12-2 run to end the first quarter.” Usner scorched the basket for three treys and finished with 17 points. Soehner and Stoltzfus each grabbed seven rebounds. AIR RIFLE In a Tuesday afternoon clash at Ephrata, the Garden Spot air rifle team finished on the short end of a 495-491 final. The Mountaineers’ Sawyer Boll was the only shooter to finish with a perfect 100 while teammates Chandler Myers, Madison Soeder and Nicole Johnson each shot 99’s. Jack Werner led the Spartans. The freshman shot a 99 while sophomores Sam Armbruster and Chris Nolt each shot 98’s as did seniors Aaron Good and Braden Reel. Garden Spot fell to 5-7 on the year while Ephrata raised its record to 10-2, only one game behind the 11-1 Manheim Central Barons. WRESTLING Garden Spot finished second as a team in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Wrestling Championships, which were held at Manheim Township on Friday and Saturday, January 24-25.
With a solid 186.5 points, the Spartans finished 23.5 points ahead of third-place Penn Manor while Hempfield compiled 224 team points to win the team championship. Individually, the Spartans had a number of wrestlers finish in the top-four for their weight classes. “We had three finalists - Josh Groff, Dustin Swanson (220) and Charles Martin (285),” explained Spartans coach Adam Bunting. “Josh lost a close match to take second in the 138,” Bunting added. “On his way to the finals, he picked up his 100th victory with his quarterfinals win. “Dustin won his second league title,” continued the coach. “He was able to back up last year’s effort with a 4-3 win in overtime over T.J. Moore, who gave Dustin his season-ending loss in districts last year with a trip to states on the line.” Swanson had a bye in the opening round of the 220’s and advanced to the title bout by posting two pins and a major decision. Both pins took 30 seconds or less to achieve. Martin’s run included a pin in merely 15 seconds and two more firstperiod pins until he faced Zach Shelley of Lampeter-Strasburg in the semis. He worked an 8-2 decision and claimed the heavyweight crown in an overtime (6:24) pin. Earning third place in the 126-pound bracket was Mason Casey. He wrestled his way to a 12-7 decision against Jackson Houghton of Solanco in the thirdplace bout after a close 7-5 decision in the consolation semis helped him reach that level.
Casey opened the championships with two consecutive pins and grabbed an 11-7 decision in the quarterfinals before a technical fall sent him to the consolation brackets. “He lost a hard-fought match to four-time league champion Will Betancourt of Manheim Central in the semis,” Bunting noted. “But he did bounce back to win his next two matches for a solid third place.” In addition, Jeremy Schilling

placed fourth in the 120-pound class. Tanner Stefanick of Penn Manor worked an 8-0 major against Schilling in the third-place match. He opened the tournament with a 17-1 technical fall over Chris Latchford of Donegal and pinned Octorara’s Tyler Walton in the second round. Schilling continued his winning streak with a pin in quarterfinals before being halted in the semis. He faced Walton in the consolation

enabled him to earn a pin late in the second period of the seventh-place match. On Wednesday, January 28, the Spartans faced Chambersburg in the first round of the District Three Class-AAA team wrestling playoffs. Chambersburg, the 10th-seeded team, got past seventh-seeded Garden Spot 50-21 in a playoff match held at Central Dauphin High School. Casey earned a 7-2 decision over Tyler Smith at the 126 battle. Groff suffered a very close defeat at the 138 bout, finishing on the short end of a 3-2 final. Gehr came on strong with a 13-9 victory at 145. Perez registered a pin at 182 and Swanson earned a 2-1 win at 220. The
heavyweight bout went to the Spartans via forfeit Chambersburg did record seven pins and a technical fall in the win. Garden Spot did win its next match - a non-league battle with Hershey. In a fight between Spartans and Trojans, it was the Spartans claiming a 53-18 victory which included for pins. Groff claimed a first-period pin at 138 and Aaron Martin notched his pin 1:01 into the 152-pound bout. Perez dominated in his 12-3 decision at 160 while Mason Musser claimed the 195-pound bout with a pin as well. Swanson pinned Omar Abdo at the 1:48 mark of the 220. semis, this time defeating the familiar foe with a third-period pin before suffering the loss in the third-place match. “Jeremy made a surprise run to the semis,” Bunting commented. “Coming in as the sixth seed, he pinned the number three seed in the quarters.” Brice Brady also finished fourth, doing so in the 132-pound bracket. Brady lost an 8-4 decision in the third-place bout. Drew Finkey (152) and Gunner Gehr (145) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. “Drew came in as the 10th-seeded wrestler and battled all weekend, winning an impressive six matches to take fifth place,” Bunting said. Following a first-round pin that required only 28 seconds, Finkey fell to Donegal’s Joseph Fox in a 6-2 decision. His impressive wrestle backs included a pin that took only eight seconds, a solid 8-5 win and a consolation fourth-round pin. He lost a consolation semi but won the fifth-place match on a 21-9 major. Gunner Gehr pinned in the second round and claimed a 7-1 decision in the quarters before losing a close 11-9 decision. He lost the fifth-place match by a 4-1 margin. “Gunner had a bit of a disappointing tournament,” said Bunting. “He was leading 7-6 in the semis but got a little out of position on top and essentially was pinned from the bottom position. “This is just a bump in the road,” he continued. “He will rebound this week and we expect him to do big things in the post-season.” Alan Perez had an impressive come-from-behind win on his way to the seventh-place consolation match. “He was trailing 9-1 in the second round before turning the tables late in the third period to pin his opponent in a cradle,” Bunting explained. “He carried that momentum into the quarterfinals where he nearly bested the number two seed and eventual finalist from Donegal.” Mason Ober of Donegal edged Perez 12-10 in overtime. Perez then won a 7-0 decision in the consis before suffering a 7-3 loss, which then

The Lancaster Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is updating its long-range transportation plan. The plan, known as the Lancaster County 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) or “connects2040” for short, will serve as a blueprint for the county’s decision-making on transportation services and projects. It will also include a long-term spending plan for addressing critical infrastructure needs over the next 25 years. When completed, the MTP will also serve as the transportation implementation element of the Lancaster County Comprehensive Plan. That plan - known as “places2040” - outlines specific priorities to help the county proactively plan for the future. Members of the public are invited to take a survey and share their opinions by Sunday, Feb. 9, to help shape a vision for transportation in Lancaster County. To do so, readers may visit https:// connects2040.metroquest.com.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that its two Columbia Branches (Spanish) are now recognized as independent congregations of the Church. Located in York and Lancaster counties, these groups were divided into two independent Spanish-speaking branches and organized with new leaders on Oct. 29, 2019. Now each has a branch president and two counselors. The former Columbia Branch (West) of York County, 2100 Hollywood Drive, was renamed the Queen Street Branch (Spanish). President Ángel Díaz was sustained as branch president, replacing president Matthew Gogna. Diaz’s counselors are first counselor José Jiménez and second counselor Ricardo Ureña. Vladimir Miranda is the branch clerk of finance for all of the York County units. The church’s boundaries coincide with the Dover Branch and the Shrewsbury, York, and West York Ward boundaries. The second Spanish-speaking congregation, formerly called the Columbia Branch (East) of Lancaster County, is now named the King Street Branch (Spanish), 1210 E. King St., Lancaster. The King Street Branch’s boundaries coincide with the boundaries of the Elizabethtown, Ephrata, Lancaster, and Lititz wards. The King Street Branch was organized with president Carlos Juárez called as branch president. Isaac Galarza is the first counselor,
