Cavod To Produce “The Secret Garden” By Ann Mead Ash
According to Monica DePaul, director of the upcoming musical “The Secret Garden” at Cavod Theatre, the show is much loved among actors because of the strength of the musical score. “The music is so powerful it is like its own character,” remarked DePaul. “The music tells the story so well.” Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, said he had been waiting for an opportunity to do the show since he first heard the music in high school. “As soon as (DePaul) mentioned (‘The Secret Garden’), I was on board,” said Huyard. “I love the music.” “The Secret Garden” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 22 and March 1; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 23 and March 2; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 24 and March 3.
“The Secret Garden” is based on the children’s classic of the same title by Frances Hodgson Burnett, published in 1911. The musical version premiered on Broadway in the early 1990s. The original Broadway production earned seven Tony nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The show tells the story of a young girl, Mary Lennox, played by Mckenna Donaldson. When Mary’s parents die of cholera in India, she is sent to live with her reclusive uncle Archibald Craven, played by Alexander Weaver, and his brother Dr. Neville Craven, played by Dan Lawback, in a secluded British manor. Upon arriving, Mary finds that the her uncle is still grieving the loss of her Aunt Lily, played by Alicia Burton. Lily, Archibald’s late wife, had died giving birth to their bedridden son, Colin, played by Lincoln Everett. Colin, who
feels guilty about his mother’s death, is hidden in a room inside the manor, which Archibald only visits when the boy is sleeping. Mary also discovers her Aunt Lily’s garden, which is locked up and overgrown with vines. She and her friends Dickon, played by Joseph Kelly, and Martha, played by Lauren Groff, are determined to revive the garden and the house as well. Because of the sobering subject matter of the drama, DePaul said that it has been challenging to stage the show without letting the presentation become too dark. “To pursue the direction we wanted to go without changing lyrics or lines, (we have been) instilling in the cast that this is about searching for God and trying to figure out what is blessing them,” said DePaul, who noted that symbolism and other techniques will be employed See “The Secret Garden” pg 2
The Cavod Theatre production of “The Secret Garden” will feature Alicia Burton (left) as Lily and Mckenna Donaldson (right) as Mary Lennox. The musical will play at Cavod in New Holland on Feb. 22, 23, and 24 and March 1, 2, and 3.

to lighten the mood and find joy even in the face of death. Both DePaul and Huyard are excited to be working with the musical cast in bringing the show’s score to life. “They are well balanced and great musicians, said Huyard. “I think people will be very impressed with the music coming out of this cast. DePaul noted that one of her favorite numbers is “Lily’s Eyes. “(The song) is this beautiful duet sung by Weaver and Lawback, who play the Craven brothers, she said, adding that “A Bit of Earth is another standout musical selection. The message of the show,
according to DePaul, focuses on love. “Love is life, she noted. “Without love, we have nothing. Huyard agreed, calling the garden Mary discovers a metaphor for bringing love back to a dark and desolate place. “(Mary) loses her family, and she comes into her uncle’s life, he said. “He’s living in a very dark place, and she brings life back into her uncle’s home. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355 on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

students in a nurturing Christian environment. LCCS offers two kindergarten program options. The traditional elementary kindergarten students come to campus five days a week. The objective of the fullday kindergarten program is to build a solid foundation upon which students grow academically, physically, spiritually, emotionally, and socially. The program is designed to be academically challenging, as well as developmentally appropriate. Kindergarten classrooms at LCCS are organized and structured to support all areas of development, and a variety of materials are used to stimulate students’ curiosity, initiative, and inquiry. LCCS offers an alternative solution for parents desiring both the gift of time with their elementary children as well as the services of a Christian school. This additional and cost-effective program is called The University Model. The University Model was developed to preserve and strengthen the family relationship and achieve a high degree of academic excellence. The University Model kindergarten model meets two days in the central classroom (on campus) and three days in the satellite classroom (at home). University Model students are on campus on Tuesdays

Third-graders at Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) recently investigated the variables that affect the drag and speed of the parachutes that they built. The project was part of the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) challenge that HMS intermediate students took on this year. Its purpose was to teach them not only about parachutes, but also about teamwork and critical thinking. Third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade teachers Renita Denlinger, Anette Raiser, and Matthew Moyer, respectively, collaborate on the annual STEM project, bringing the grades together to build cooperation and community.

The parachute project was chosen through the professional development work of Moyer in a summer STEM workshop offered by the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13 and taught by instructors trained at the Museum of Science in Boston. Moyer was intrigued by the way the project encourages students to think like engineers while incorporating both math and literacy. This STEM project highlights the focus that HMS puts on hands-on learning and connecting student learning through a variety of instructional styles and techniques. It starts with students researching three variables affecting a parachute: canopy size, canopy material, and line length. Students then design their own parachute, incorporating a greater variety of materials. This requires the students to take their initial

Departments Celebrate FFA At Farm Show At the recent 103rd Pennsylvania Farm Show, held from Jan. 5 to 12, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding and Education Secretary Pedro Rivera celebrated agricultural education during the state FFA’s Mid-Winter Convention with more than 5,000 FFA members and guests. Pennsylvania’s more than 150 high school agriculture education programs aim to prepare students for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers and beyond. The Mid-Winter Convention recognized the academic, leadership and field-based experiences
of 409 recipients of the Keystone Degree, the highest honor earned at the state level. In addition, the Pennsylvania FFA Alumni Association awarded more than 364 first-year members their own official FFA jacket after they completed a competitive application process. Last year marked the creation of the Commission on Agriculture Education Excellence. The 15-member commission complements Gov. ODC’s small group employment program. He cannot say enough about the ODC participants’ skills and work ethic. At the warehouse, part of Strine’s job is to move the boxes groups of up to four participants make as one of a variety of duties they complete, from the area where they are constructed to another location in the warehouse. The more boxes the participants complete, the more trips Strine makes. “They keep me moving,” he said. “On a busy day, I do 20,000 steps in four hours.” According to ODC executive director Gregg Richards, the program is designed to give participants a chance to work in an integrated environment. “Small group employment is a crew of program participants who go to a workplace with a program supervisor and work side by side with employees of the local business, (where they) are paid at minimum wage or above,” explained Richards, who added that businesses may utilize a crew for seasonal work or on a regular basis. Strine said that ODC participants were carefully selected for the program based on skills. Over the course of a year, Strine worked to cull a list of 40 possible participants down to eight workers and four alternates. “They were competing for positions,” noted Strine, who added that the participants work four hours per day, clocking in and out and working alongside other Kinsey’s employees. Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, said that the skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, which makes archery supplies and outdoor gear. Mueller added that many businesses have a variety of tasks that might also be a good fit for ODC individuals, including light assembly, collating mailings, and putting kits together. Strine noted that the ODC participants in the small group program have also folded and packed items such as Tshirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Emerson, one of the small group participants, said that his
favorite job is making boxes, especially the large boxes. “We try our best (to make as many boxes as we can),” said Emerson, who also folds T-shirts. Emerson appreciates the excitement of meeting new people, but he said he does get nervous sometimes when talking to people he does not know. That is where Deb Russell, who serves as a liaison between Kinsey’s and ODC comes in. “Our crews interact throughout the day and during lunch breaks,” said Russell, who first suggested ODC participants help with box production in early 2016 based on her sister’s 40 years of experience at ODC. “The crew from ODC arrives with a positive attitude that’s contagious throughout the building,” Russell continued. “The way they support one another to accomplish the goals we’ve laid out for them is inspiring. We should all learn a lesson from them.” Strine complimented Kinsey’s employees, saying, “Interaction between Kinsey’s employees and participants has been excellent.” According to Mueller, integrating participants into community businesses is an ultimate goal for ODC. Strine agreed, saying, “All (participants) have designated disabilities, but I like to look at what they can do.” Russell added that ODC crew members have been willing to try new tasks, following instructions compiled in a binder. “The binder was made up so that each crew could work independently, making the final projects consistent for Kinsey’s and giving (the participants) a feeling of success and independence,” said Russell. “We’re so proud to be working with such a wonderful organization.” Emerson said he likes the work, but he also enjoys receiving a paycheck. His favorite thing to spend his money on is pizza. ODC is actively seeking more employers who could benefit from the talents and abilities offered by participants. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.odcenter.org or call 717-397-4269.

PAsmart will invest $20 million in new funding for computer science and STEM education, as well as an additional $10 million investment in apprenticeships and job training programs for in-demand careers. Spot Matmen Place Seventh at Leagues by Ara Grigorian
Garden Spot High School was the site of the Lancaster-Lebanon League wrestling championships, which were held on Friday and Saturday, January 25-26. It was the sixth year in a row that Garden Spot has hosted the league championships. In the team standings, Manheim Central edged Northern Lebanon by a single point, winning 184.5 to 183.5. Garden Spot finished a solid seventh with 123 team points. Solanco (121) was eighth. “We finished seventh overall out of 23 teams,” head coach Adam Bunting noted. “We had seven medalists.” The wrestlers who did finish eighth place or better in their
Flyers Bus Trip Scheduled Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team will host a Philadelphia Flyers bus trip on Tuesday, March 19. The bus will depart at 4 p.m. from the Elite Coach Headquarters, 1685 W. Main St., Ephrata. Attendees will be able to watch the Flyers play the Montreal Canadiens. respective weight classes were Jacob Zook, Alan Perez, Charles Martin, Mason Casey, Josh Groff, Garrett Gehr and 220-pound weight class champion Dustin Swanson. Swanson’s first two matches resulted in the Spartan sophomore registering pins. He defeated Manheim Township’s Josh Williams in only 53 seconds and needed only 45 seconds to pin Bailey Beamesderfer of Elco. Swanson outlasted a tough Joey Coblentz of Pequea Valley in a 7-2 decision in the semis. Coblentz would go on to claim third in this weight class. Swanson then earned the title with a 4-2 victory over Tyler Pheneger of Lampeter-Strasburg. “He had an impressive tournament, winning leagues as only a sophomore,” Bunting remarked. “That runs his record to 23-4 with a whopping 16 wins by pin.” Speaking of youngsters with impressive finishes, Gehr, who’s only a freshman, earned third place in the 120-pound class. His weekend included three pins and a major decision. “Garrett made it all the way to the semifinals before losing a tough match,” said Bunting. In that semifinal match, No. Lebanon’s Brandon Breidigan (eventual second-place finisher) defeated Gehr 5-2. Earlier in the tournament, he had posted a pin over Marshall Adams of

113-pound semis. Casey’s road to the semis included a 17-7 major against Colin McDonald of L-S and a fall against Jansen Fohr of Donegal. In the consolations he won the fifth-place fight over CV’s Keaton Fischer in a solid 6-1 decision. Martin earned fifth in the 285-pound brackets. His second-round loss to Tyler Dougherty (champ at 285) of Central sent him into the consis after he had defeated his first opponent 11-4. In the consolations, he pinned Thyago Alvarez of McCaskey in only 20 seconds. He then earned a 1-0 win against Hempfield’s Zac Bicevskis only to lose 3-2 in a close battle with third-place finisher Nicholas Stout of Cedar Crest. “Charles Martin continues to build on a much improved junior campaign,” said Bunting. “He wrestled the eventual champ to a tough 3-1 decision.” In the fifth-place match, Martin came out and left no doubt he was earning that medal. He pinned Paul Omer of Octorara in a mere 47 seconds. Perez (145) and Zook (170) each finished eighth in their classes. Zook battled back following a pin he suffered against eventual champ Ethan Herb of No. Lebanon. He won a consolation over Owen Kahl of Elco and another via forfeit before he was pinned by Gavin Camarote of Octorara in overtime. In the seventh-place bout, Ben
Bearinger of Cocalico notched a pin. “Zook made his last chance at leagues count as he medaled for the first time,” Bunting said. Perez had a difficult time with Donegal’s Joseph Fox, who defeated Perez 9-0 in their first bout of the tournament and again by a 15-0 score in the seventh-place match. In between, Perez pinned Dan Klumpp of Cocalico, majored by a 13-3 score over Ryan Keman of Octorara and pinned Stephen Wiczalkowski of Elco before losing his next consolation match by a close 5-3 score. The winner of that match was third-place finisher Joel Dionne of Hempfield. “Alan had a thrilling come-frombehind victory over his Elco opponent,” explained Bunting. “He was trailing 6-0 before taking his opponent down to his back and pinning him. Perez is another wrestler that has continued to improve dramatically this season.” Also posting a consolation round win was Drew Finkey at 152. He lost his first match by a 5-2 score. He then pinned Cole Rice of E-town and Franklin Liriano of Lebanon before he was stopped by eventual fourth-place finisher Austin Sauder of MC. Tyler Martin (182) pinned his first opponent - Luke Brown of Pequea Valley. The pin happened with only six seconds left in the match. However, being on the losing end of the next two matches didn’t allow the junior to go any further.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL With the freezing temperatures hitting the region, the Spartans didn’t play their scheduled league game this past Wednesday. Their lone game prior to wrapping up the week was a non-league contest at Wilson Saturday, January 26. The Spartans fell to 11-8 with a 54-35 loss to the Bulldogs. Wilson held Spot to only eight first-quarter points and only four in the second stanza. The 30-12 halftime deficit was too big to overcome, despite a stronger second half by the visitors. Keontae Nunn racked up 16 points to lead his team. Matt Sharp and Austin Skowood scored seven and six points, respectively. BOWLING The Spartans faced Cocalico and L-S this past week in Section Three bowling. With a 7-0 defeat of the Pioneers on Friday, January 25, the Spartans improved to 56-21 but failed to gain ground on Cocalico later as the Eagles downed Garden Spot 7-0 on Wednesday. Both were held at Dutch Lanes. Cris Torres bowled a 569 against Cocalico. The Eagles were led by KC Miller’s overall score of 650, which included a high score of 235. Tyrus Current had a 233 on his way to finishing with an aggregate score of 606. In the L-S games, Trevor Coutney was on fire, finishing with 289 in his second game and recording a 666 series. Amanda Lynch contributed a 248 in her third game and tallied 633 total.

Warwick and a 9-0 major against Arik Harnish of L-S. The consolations had him against Elizabethtown’s Cam Olson, whom he pinned at the 4:04 mark of the match. He then pinned Tanner Stafanick of Penn Manor to claim third place. “It was an impressive finish for a freshman,” the coach reiterated. “He’s just behind Dustin Swanson for best record on the team at 23-6 on the season.” Groff was in the next weight class, finishing fifth at 126. The junior wrestler began by notching a pin over Pequea Valley’s Zach Donlen. Groff gained momentum with a 6-0 shutout of Hempfield’s Clay Gainer and in just 1:19 into his quarterfinals match, pinned Trent Brubaker of Elco. The eventual champ Colin Leonard halted Groff’s quest for the same, moving into the title match after a 10-2 defeat of Groff. “He also made the semifinals and lost a hard-fought decision to the eventual champion,” Bunting explained. Andy Bliss of L-S won an even closer match, edging Groff 6-4 and forcing him to wrestle for fifth place. The Spartan junior pinned Conestoga Valley’s Cameron Kistler to walk away with fifth place. “Casey also made the semifinals and lost a close 6-4 match to the eventual champ,” Bunting pointed out. This loss came at the hands of Matt Inman of Annville-Cleona in the

as he further researched the Kyle family genealogy. McCollum discovered that John Kyle’s parents, Jean Bell and Samuel Kyle, are both buried in nearby Chambersburg. Samuel Kyle is the son of James Kyle, who was born in Ireland and married Susan Dixon, and the two are buried in the cemetery at the historic Donegal Presbyterian Church in Mount Joy. Upon realizing this, McCollum contacted pastor Matt Randolph to learn more about the gravestones and cemetery, as well as the history of the church. According to McCollum, many of his ancestors were part of at least two major waves of Scotch-Irish settlers in the 1600s and 1700s before the United States was officially founded. Many McCollums journeyed from Scotland to what is now New Jersey before making their way slowly to Westmoreland County in Pennsylvania and later on to Ohio. A second wave included the “Ultra Scotch-Irish,” a group that McCollum explained had only lived in Ireland for one or two generations and would not allow themselves to be called Irish. Many of these settlers were Protestant Presbyterians seeking religious freedom who traveled through Philadelphia and into Lancaster. “For me it was this incredible experience. We lived most of our lives in Ohio, but here it is that we have generations of people we’re descendants of (who are) buried all over Lancaster County,” remarked McCollum.

Last summer, Mount Joy resident James McCollum (far right) and his sisters Jenny Mills (third from right) and Joan Slipski (second from right) were asked to speak at a ceremony dedicating a historical marker at the Kyle-McCollum House in Youngstown, Ohio, which was built and inhabited by their ancestors. For Presidents’ Month:
Mount Joy resident Dr. James McCollum had always taken an interest in the McCollum side of his family’s lineage. But in 2018, an invitation to be part of a ceremony for the installation of a historical marker at the Kyle-McCollum House in Youngstown, Ohio, sparked a newfound interest in the Kyle line. The Kyle-McCollum homestead was completed in 1813 and became home to Joshua Kyle and his wife, who are McCollum’s great-great-great-grandparents. The couple’s daughter, Hannah Kyle, married Ira McCollum, and the pair inherited the home after Hannah’s parents passed away - establishing it as the McCollum house. Ira and Hannah had a son named Alexander, who later had a son named James, who is the grandfather of Dr. James McCollum of Mount Joy. “My father was also named James, and he lived (in the Kyle-McCollum House) too, during the Great Depression,” explained McCollum. For that reason, McCollum and his siblings were invited to speak at the building dedication in July 2018 as the descendants of some of the earliest pioneers to settle in Youngstown. “It is the oldest continuously occupied home in Youngstown,” noted McCollum. His ancestors sold the main home to an automobile dealer during the Great Depression, while maintaining ownership of a smaller house beside it. “As I was preparing to say something (at the ceremony), I realized I’m also a Kyle descendent,” recalled McCollum. As he began to research, he learned that Joshua Kyle was a veteran of the War of 1812. Joshua’s father, John Kyle, was a captain in the Revolutionary War and had been born in - of all places Lancaster County. Although McCollum grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, and spent much of his adult life and career in Youngstown and Columbus, Ohio, he moved to Mount Joy in 2006 to serve as executive deputy to the president and chief of staff at Millersville University. He and his wife, Donna, have remained residents of Mount Joy since his retirement. Doing so turned out to be perfect

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, invites families with soon-to-be preschoolers and kindergartners to its Early Childhood Education Open House on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. The open house will feature a Valentine’s party that will focus on 1 Corinthians 13:13, which states, “The greatest of these is love.” Parents will meet with teachers and learn the distinctives of the Principle Approach, the method of education that is used at Dayspring and that was used during the Colonial and founding periods in America. According to headmaster Dr. Mike Myers, the Principle Approach is rooted in the Word of God. Dayspring offers two kindergarten programs - Developmental Kindergarten and Academic Kindergarten - in which children begin to learn the rudiments of subjects such as science, history, and geography while learning to view God as the Author of every subject. Both kindergarten classes incorporate field studies, as well. The Developmental Kindergarten program is appropriate for children who are 4 years old or who just turned 5 at the start of the school year. The program is activity-oriented while introducing the structure and rigors of a formal classroom setting. As a first step into scholarship, the student notebook is introduced and students begin formal steps toward reading through the Sound Sensible program. Students develop early math skills, learn a Bible verse for each letter of the alphabet, and delve into literature as they study the life of Beatrix Potter. They explore music, art, and the environment around them. The Academic Kindergarten program is appropriate for students who are 5 years old through early age 6 at the start of the school year. The program is still activity-oriented, but more emphasis is placed on paper-and-pencil activities and structured seat work. The student notebook is expanded and built upon as a tool for scholarship. The Writing Road to Reading literacy program is introduced, and students expand their phonetic awareness and segmentation in preparation of beginning to read. The school reports that many children learn to read before completing Academic Kindergarten. Dayspring’s Developmental Kindergarten and Academic Kindergarten programs are held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. For parents who desire to supplement these or who simply need a five-day option, IDEA! (Inspire, Discover, Explore, and Achieve) is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This program offers a community style of learning, as well as a focus on direct Bible reading, science and history, STEM, collaborative group projects, history character studies, other creative avenues, and more. In addition to kindergarten and the supplemental kindergarten program, Dayspring offers preschool programs for children who
Dayspring Christian Academy students Molli Troxell (left) of Mount Joy and Ainsley Scott of Columbia share story time in Academic Kindergarten. Dayspring’s Early Childhood Education Open House will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 10 a.m. are age 3 by Sept. 1. Preschool is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 11 a.m. This program offers an introduction to the alphabet, with students learning a Bible hero for each letter of the alphabet, culminating with Bible character day. Age-appropriate history, science, literature, and math
lessons are incorporated, and guided free play and circle time are offered. Daily art projects incorporate the focus on history, science, Bible, and literature. For more information or to register for the open house, readers may call 717-285-2000 or visit www.dayspringchristian.com.
