For The Birds
BY ANN MEAD ASHJen Watson, assistant director and youth services coordinator with the ELANCO Library, is a woman with experience in birding. Watson first took a field course in college with a section on ornithology, and she later worked at the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies in Colorado, where she provided educational activities, such as bird walks that included information about banding. Watson is now eager to share what she knows with area residents.
“I think people are a little intimidated by bird watching, but it is one of the more accessible outdoor activities,” said Watson. “I am hoping to give people the basic skills they need to feel comfortable.”
To that end, Watson has planned two activities at the library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland. Bird ID 101 will be held on Friday, Feb. 17, at 3 p.m., and the ELANCO Library Great Backyard Bird Count

Church Fundraiser Will Move To Takeout Format
BY ANN MEAD ASHFor about a decade, members of Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church have held a lasagna dinner in February. Two years ago, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the event became a drive-through. For 2023, the dinner will transition to a takeout-only meal.
This year, the fundraiser will be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 25, See Lasagna Dinner pg 4
will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 10 a.m. Both events are free and no registration is required.
The Bird ID 101 program will include instructions on how to use a field guide and information about field marks - characteristics used in species identification. “I will touch on using factors such as habitat or time of year where you are (located) in looking for certain bird species,” Watson said, adding that she will focus on birds that are common to the area and skills needed to feel comfortable identifying them.
Watson specifically picked that weekend in February to coincide with the Great Backyard Bird Count, which is an annual international event organized by Cornell University, the National Audubon Society, and other organizations to help scientists doing bird population research. “(The Backyard Bird Count) is a citizen science project that has been going on for years,” explained Watson. Those taking
part in the event use www.ebird.org, a website dedicated to compiling data about birds. “People (who participate input) population data concentrated on one weekend, so it’s a time stamp sceintists can look at (to provide a) snapshot of information on bird species declining in certain areas or (increasing) from other years,” said Watson, who will use an ELANCO Library eBird account for data collected in the area around the library. “It’s a really great tool for (researchers) to use,” said Watson. “It’s a way for the public to get involved.”
“It’s (an opportunity to) come and enjoy and watch the birds and have a good morning together,” commented Watson.
In the case of inclement weather, those planning to attend either event may check the library website at https://elancolibrary.org or search for “Eastern Lancaster County Library” on Facebook to make sure the library is open.
Plainly Romantic
BY ANN MEAD ASHJo Ann Brown has been writing since she was 11 or 12 years old. She put aside her hopes of becoming a writer in college and while serving in the Army and raising a family, but in 1984, she began recording her thoughts again, and by 1987, she had sold her first historical romance. “Nothing Wagered,” written under the name Jo Ann Ferguson, was published in 1988.
How the national bestselling author moved from writing romance novels to writing Christian romances
featuring Amish characters will be the subject of the New Holland Area Historical Society (NHAHS) presentation scheduled to be held on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 7 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland.
Prior to 2007, Jo Ann entered the inspirational market writing under the name Jo Ann Brown. Her first book in that genre was “Thomas Kinkade’s Home for Christmas.” The editor she worked with on that book then asked if she would be interested in writing fiction about the Amish community. Jo Ann and

GOTR Helps Girls Reach Developmental Finish Line
BY JEFF FALKAll phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.
That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.
“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster.
“Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”
“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”
West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an after-school,

her husband had lived in West Chester in the 1990s, and having majored in history, Jo Ann was experienced at doing research. She and her husband headed to Lancaster County to begin learning about Plain culture. “I was familiar with the area,” said Jo Ann, “but I had a lot of assumptions about the Amish, and I knew those were most likely not true.”
During her visit to Lancaster, Jo Ann talked with members of the Amish community, stopping at yard sales and chatting with anyone willing to talk to her. She also bought books about the sect and started researching. “The assumptions went away, and they (became) real people,” said Jo Ann.
Two years ago, Jo Ann and her husband moved from Florida to New Holland, and her understanding of Amish culture deepened. “I go to the grocery store, and (members of the Plain community) buy the same things I do, but they choose to live their lives in a different way,” she said.
Before Jo Ann wrote plots involving the Amish, she wrote Regency romances, which are set in the early 1800s. The subgenre, she noted, follows a “strict moral framework” for behavior between men and women.
“To move from that (to writing stories featuring Amish characters) was not a really big step,” Jo Ann commented. “It was a comfortable transition. I just had to learn all the new rules.”
The program is open to the public. More information about NHAHS may be found at https://nhhistorical.com or by searching for “New Holland Area Historical Society” on Facebook.
Information about Jo Ann and the many books she has written may be found at www.joannbrownbooks.com.

Spartans Battle Manheim Central, Wilson
BY ARA GRIGORIANComing off a tough Lancaster-Lebanon League loss at Elizabethtown two days earlier, the Garden Spot boys’ basketball team traveled to Manheim Central for another battle with a league rival on Thursday, January 26.
The Barons’ defense held Garden Spot to five points in the fourth quarter, opening up a five-point lead and posting a 61-44 win.
The Barons (15-3) improved to 8-1 in league play while the Spartans (5-12) fell to 2-7.
The always dangerous Trey Grube scored 21 points for the Barons.
While Grube had the gamehigh, Garden Spot’s Jeff St. Jean led everyone in treys, knocking down three from
long range. He finished with 13 points.
Austin Hurst and Bryce Weaver poured in 10 points each. The Spartan teammates both went 2-for-2 at the free throw line.
The Fleetwood Tigers visited Garden Spot for a nonleague Saturday afternoon match. With a strong secondhalf defense, Fleetwood came away with a 65-36 victory.
Jace Conrad and Lance Binkley hit double digits for Garden Spot, scoring 11 each. Binkley was on the mark with two three-point buckets.
Gabriel Smeltz finished with eight.
In a fast-paced and exciting non-league contest on January 31, Conrad Weiser scored 13 overtime points to top the Spartans 65-57 at New Holland. The Spartans fell to 5-14 on the year.
Ironically, the Spartans’ 13point fourth quarter output tied the game before the buzzer to end regulation.
Binkley’s three-point shooting netted 12 of his 13 game points. Conrad finished with 12 points and Dylan Nolt came through with 10.
Donovan Gingrich scored 30 for Weiser.
WRESTLING
“All three of our big guys pinned their way to the semis,” Adam Bunting, the Garden Spot wrestling coach,
Shoes & Boots For The Whole Family
pointed out.
Bunting was talking about the performances of Blake Weaver, Tyler Hurst and Mason Musser at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Wrestling Championships, which took place Friday and Saturday, January 27-28 at Manheim Township.
Weaver was the winner in the 189-pound weight class, taking a 3-2 decision over Hempfield junior J.J. Plaza.
“Blake capped a fantastic tournament with a gritty, smartly wrestled match against Plaza, the number two seed,” Bunting remarked. “He broke up a 1-1 match late in the third with a single leg takedown. Plaza escaped with about 30 seconds left to make it 3-2, but Blake was able to hold him off.”
Weaver also had pins against Adrian Nunez of Octorara and Cocalico’s Levi Bearinger before earning a 6-2 decision over a very tough Clayton Erb of Northern Lebanon in the semifinals.
“Blake scored a crucial takedown at the end of the second period to go up 2-1,” Bunting explained. “He blew the match open in the third period with two more takedowns.
“He becomes the Spartans’ 21st league champion and seventh in the past eight years,” continued the coach.
Hurst lost to Jose Garcia in the title bout. Garcia won the championship for McCaskey in the 215 weight class.
“Hurst faced a tall order in the finals, taking on the defending league champ and state eighth-place finisher from last year,” Bunting said.
He pinned Dan Viselli of Donegal in the first round and took only six seconds to pin Edgar Velazquez of Lebanon. Hurst wasn’t done recording pins for he pinned Adam Mitchell of Octorara in 1:12
Zander Rider of Conestoga Valley had a three-match win streak (all pins) coming into the semifinal with Hurst. The Spartan senior posted the pin 51 seconds into the second period.
“He had an outstanding tournament, racking up four pins and taking second,” added Bunting.
“Mason Musser faced off against an opponent that had pinned him last year,” Bunting said, referring to Hempfield’s Caleb Mussmon. “It was a much closer match than the final score of 8-2.”
Musser had pins against Seamus Bohan of Lancaster Catholic and Chris Sabino of Columbia prior to facing Mussmon in the semis.
He advanced through the consolation semis via forfeit and pinned Hayden Adams of Northern Lebanon in the third-place match.
Sean Kelch, who lost his first match on Friday, earned a 15-0 technical fall, wrestling his way back in the 152-pound consolation brackets. He then pinned Caden Chidley of Octorara only to lose to Township’s Kaden Kemp - the eventual fifth-place finisher.
“Sean had a strong showing,” Bunting noted. “He came up one win shy of reaching the podium. As only a secondyear wrestler, he continues to impress.”
As a team, Garden Spot made the top-10 in the standings with 96.5 points. That sum was only half a point higher than 11th-place Elco.
AIR RIFLE
The Spartan riflers were involved in two very close contests this past week, coming up short against Elizabethtown on January 26 and edging Governor Mifflin on Tuesday, January 31.
Parker Bryant and Rachel
Gerberich both hit the 100point mark for the Bears in their 496-494 victory at Garden Spot. Matthew Sauder led the home team with 100 while both Colton Watkins and Leksi Bender sparked the Spartans with 99 each. Ryan Lambert and Trevor Jones recorded 98’s.
In the Mifflin match, Lambert, Jones and Magdelene Martin all hit the century mark while Jack Werner (99) and Bender (98) provided the necessary support to overtake the Mustangs.
GIRLS’ ’ BASKETBALL
The Garden Spot girls ran into a Manheim Central team that was unbeaten in League competition. The Barons carried a 29-11 lead into the locker room at halftime and rode the momentum into the second half, posting a 61-17 victory at New Holland on Thursday, January 26. The Barons improved to 9-0 in league play while the Spartans fell to 2-7.
Maddie Knier scored 30 points to pace Central. Gwen Varley led Garden Spot with eight points, connecting twice from three-point range. Nikki Zeiset added three points.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.
Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 partici-
pants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.
“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West.
GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age. The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.
This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.
“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a
household name.”
Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017, GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.
Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.
“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”
To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotrlancaster .org, email jwest@gotrlancaster .org or call 717-869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income.
