TRAVELING MUSIC
The New Holland Area Historical Society will host “Songs of the American Road” by Matthew Dodd at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21. Dodd will present songs people sang to pass the time as they traveled. The event will be held in the chapel at Garden Spot Village, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The public is invited to attend. KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION
Eastern Lancaster County School District has scheduled its kindergarten registration. Daytime appointments will be available daily on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, April 2, 3, and 4, and evening appointments will also be available on April 2 and 3. Registration will take place in the Library Media Center at Garden Spot High School and Middle School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. Children should attend with their caregivers. Appointments are required. To schedule an appointment, call the district office at 717-354-1552. SHARE THE LOVE
is celebrating Love Your Library Month in February by sponsoring a Share the Love program. Love Your Library Month is an initiative to encourage residents to invest in their local libraries. The Share the Love program offers community members an opportunity to help pay off children’s fines at the library. The program’s purpose is to encourage children and their families to return to the library, as fines may sometimes deter families from coming back to the library. Through Thursday, Feb. 28, community members may choose an amount from the Giving Tree and go to the circulation desk to make a donation in that amount. Several giving levels are available. The children who benefit will be selected randomly, and the donation will be completely anonymous. “ANYTHING RED”
The Lancaster County Postcard Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The program will be a members’ market, with members selling postcards and other items. The postcard competition will be “Anything Red.” The meeting is open to the public. For more information, readers may call 717-413-6882.

TTC/Potter’s House Plans Annual Banquet Valentine’s Breakfast Set At Joanna Furnace By Ann Mead Ash
“Our premise is understanding that recovery is not the antidote to addiction,” said Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. “Belonging is the antidote to addiction. So recovery can’t happen in isolation,” he explained. To help raise funds to support the ministry, TTC/Potter’s House will hold its annual banquet on Friday, March 8, at Shady Maple Banquet Hall, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. This year’s keynote speaker will be Armond “Bud” Roda. Roda is the volunteer staff chaplain at the Lancaster County Prison and a liaison for referrals to the TTC/Potter’s House program. Roda has See TTC/Potter’s House pg 6

Mentoring Across The Miles A Woman’s Concern Features LifeCycles Helps New Location, Expanded Services Youths Stay On Track By Ann Mead Ash
By Ann Mead Ash
A Christmas postcard sent out by A Woman’s Concern shows a photo of double purple doors decorated with holiday wreaths and an “open” sign. “Our purple doors mean ‘love, compassion, and support,’” said Jill Hartman, executive director of A Woman’s Concern, which relocated from Duke Street in Lancaster city to 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster, in July 2018. “We painted the doors purple so our clients could find us.” These clients are the more than 600 women who benefit from A Woman’s Concern services each year. Those services include pregnancy testing, limited ultrasounds, and education on healthy relationships, pregnancy, parenting, and more. See A Woman’s Concern pg 2
Jill Hartman, executive director of A Woman’s Concern, looks forward to seeing clients at the organization’s new location at 1102 Millersville Pike, Lancaster.
At the end of each year, Lee Deremer, founder of LifeCycles, creates a presentation that shows each young man who participates in the program how far he has ridden a bicycle by taking part in regular weekly and added challenge rides. “We hold an endof-the-year celebration (with) an awards ceremony,” said Deremer. “I list all the boys who have participated by name on a map.” Deremer uses the map to create a fictional trip for each boy. “From Lancaster to State College (equals) 160 miles of riding,” explained Deremer. “(Some boys) go as far as Fargo, North Dakota, See LifeCycles pg 8
Boys ages 12 to 18 who take part in LifeCycles take rides in Lancaster County and beyond. LifeCycles is a bicycle ministry associated with Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster.

Of course, more space means more opportunity to offer clients medical services as well. A room to conduct ultrasounds and space for client advocates, along with meeting and business space and offices, were all made possible by the larger, new facility. According to Hartman, the nonprofit has been available to local women facing unplanned pregnancies since 1972, when it opened as Birthright. As A Woman’s Concern outgrew its Duke Street location, an East Chestnut Street facility was opened, but in July 2017, Harvest Bible Chapel offered its administrative offices, including two buildings on Millersville Pike to the organization. A successful 2018 capital campaign provided funds to renovate the main building. A grant from the High Foundation will help remodel the carriage house, called Hope House, which is located behind the building, for meetings and classes. Hope House also offers large items that clients may need, such as cribs and strollers. A boutique for smaller items is found in the front foyer of the main building. Hartman explained that as a “handup” organization, A Woman’s Concern allows clients to work with client advocates and receive points, which they can

“We create a loving, compassionate, nonjudgmental environment for clients, so they get all the support they need,” explained Hartman. The move nearly quadrupled the space that A Woman’s Concern could utilize, and staff and volunteers are planning to offer more services in the future by partnering and collaborating with other community organizations. Among those services are a program called Redefined, which will aid in healing for women, and a fatherhood mentoring program called The Fatherhood Journey. Matthew Neff of Family of Restoration Ministries has already run a fatherhood workshop, and Neff will soon become the first volunteer male client advocate for A Woman’s Concern. “I think that will make a huge difference in reaching the boyfriends, fiancés, and husbands,” added Laura Kline, marketing and communications director. Other services that the organization will offer will include working with a local market to provide dietitians to teach prenatal and postnatal nutrition to clients. In addition, a volunteer will help the organization expand lactation services, and the Knights of Columbus has funded a parttime medical position for 24 months, along with purchasing materials to expand the CPR program, which is a family safety initiative A Woman’s Concern provides. Offering services in both Spanish and English has been an important goal for the

As the organizers of the annual Salem Hellers Evangelical Reformed Church lasagna dinner prepared to create an Italian atmosphere for the 10th year, pastor Bruce Tully remembered some of the guests who have dined at past events. “Last year, a couple came to celebrate their anniversary,” said Tully. “Another couple from out of state drove by and saw the sign and stopped for dinner.” This year’s dinner will be held at the church, 2555 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. Each year, organizers enhance the venue by adding special lighting and Italian music playing in the background. Mark Steller will again serve as maître d’ to escort guests to their tables. For the 2019 event, organizers will prepare up to 100 pans of lasagna in three varieties, including hamburger, hamburger and sausage, and vegetable with a red sauce. Salad, applesauce, garlic bread, and beverages will also be served. A variety of desserts and coffee will be offered in a separate dessert room dubbed “Dulce Terrace.” Past dinners have raised approximately $2,000 for church mission trips to work in orphanages in Guatemala, serve in Israel, or perform maintenance work at JAARS headquarters in Waxhaw, N.C. JAARS is a support arm of Wycliffe Bible Translators that provides transportation and supplies to remote areas. This year, organizers have decided to help fund local mission projects, including aiding the area’s ministerium. “Part of what we raise will go to a discretionary fund that helps the Conestoga Valley Ministerium Helping Hands Fund,” explained Tully. “That is the fund our ministerium uses to help those who qualify in our district with needs such as rent or heating assistance or to help displaced persons.” Tickets for the lasagna dinner will be available at the door at a set price for adults. Tickets for children ages 5 to 10 will be discounted, and children age 4 and under may eat for free. Takeout meals will also be available. Readers who have questions about the event may call 717-951-9717. In the case of inclement weather, readers may visit www.salemhellers.com for event updates. Roda says that his ministry consists of “being a nobody (who is) trying to tell everybody about Somebody.” At the banquet, Roda will speak on the event’s theme: “Captivity to Destiny: A Broken System and Broken People Restored.” TTC/Potter’s House offers a three-phase program with a total capacity of 21 beds. Hoover noted that one goal of the program is to help students integrate into the community and give back. “Our ‘captivity to destiny’ vision is oriented toward students having an experience in recovery,” he explained. “It’s

did this we needed to step out in faith, Deremer explained. “We needed to find people who shared the vision of mentoring boys in a God-honoring environment (to) give them the opportunity to grow into the young men they were created to be. In 2014, the couple took their vision to Community Fellowship Church in Lancaster, where they met with the pastors and director of community groups. “They were supportive and asked us to bring it to the mission group, said Deremer, who also gathered friends who shared the vision to form a board and incorporate as a nonprofit organization. In May 2015, LifeCycles held its first ride. The organization now rides more than 50 times per year. “We have now traveled more than 77,000 miles together, noted Deremer. “That’s three times around the planet without injury. From the middle of April until early September, the group meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays in outdoor locations in Columbia and Lancaster for about 90 minutes. “We have a welcome and a message, and we stretch, said Deremer. “We ride about an hour and then we sit down for a hot meal. All meals are donated by people who support the vision of LifeCycles.

or Miami, Deremer is especially proud of one participant who is slated to eclipse 4,000 miles when the group starts holding regular rides again in the spring. “(That young man has) gone through Texas and Mexico to the border of Panama, said a smiling Deremer. LifeCycles is a bicycle ministry associated with Community Fellowship Church and overseen by Deremer and his wife, Marcie. The program mentors boys from the greater Lancaster area in a bicycle touring environment. All equipment is provided to the boys free of charge. Deremer said that he began LifeCycles in 2014 when he reached a point of frustration seeing young men “derailed by their circumstances. “I could no longer stand on the sidelines, said Deremer. “I had to see if I could bring some resources together and do something. Deremer was specifically concerned about boys between the ages of 12 and 18 who did not have a positive male role model in their lives. “It’s hard enough growing into an adult today, said Deremer, adding that it is increasingly difficult without a mentor to provide guidance about how to get there. Deremer and his wife began to pray about how to proceed. “(We knew) if we
A New Holland branch of LifeCycles rides from Garden Spot Village on Wednesday evenings from April through November. Since the organization is now in its fifth year, some of the participants are now looking forward to getting a driver’s license, while others are in college or working in the local area. “All boys are working on the same issues, noted Deremer. “They are trying to figure out what it means to go from age 13 to young adulthood in a smart way. They have questions to work through, and we are thrilled to engage with them. Deremer is especially excited about an upcoming fundraiser for LifeCycles. On Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7 and 8, a number of experienced adult riders will take part in the Do Hard Things Challenge Ride, which will begin at the Pennsylvania and New York state line, near Elmira, N.Y. “We will ride (through the night) from there to Williamsport and then all along the Susquehanna River to Wrightsville, said Deremer, who explained that riders will raise funds through sponsorships. Benefit Auction from pg 4 supplies, a classroom, a dormitory, and a ministry office. The facility will be used to train Ghanaians and other West Africans to enter the missionary field or become pastors. To make all of this happen, Ghana Initiative relies on the support from individuals and businesses, and it also hosts an annual banquet and benefit auction. This year’s event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, at Weaver’s Banquet Facility, 2610 N. Reading Road, Denver. While banquet tickets are no longer available, the public is invited to attend the auction. Preview of the auction lots will open at 6:30 p.m., and the bidding will commence at 7 p.m. More than 130 items will be up for bids. These include dinners at upscale restaurants, flying lessons in a Cessna plane, a quarter-sawn cherry blanket chest lined with cedar, a hand-tufted Indian rug, artwork, a wooden rocking horse, Ghanaian baskets, a designer purse, collectible coins, gift card bundles, and more. Pfoutz hopes that area residents will attend and bid liberally. “Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission represents the culture of Lancaster County,” he said. “In this county, people are generally caring, interested in helping when a need exists, and generous with what God has blessed them with. The money you might spend on an item that will bring joy into your life will make an impact in the life of a person halfway around the world in Ghana, West Africa.” The next mobile clinic in Ghana will take place from Tuesday, July 30, to Sunday, Aug. 11. Volunteers are being recruited now. For more information about Ghana Initiative Mobile Medical Mission or the auction, readers may visit www.ghanainitiative.com or call 717-615-4459.

The community is invited to join Fairmount residents on Friday, Feb. 22, at 9:30 a.m. for a Safety Vest Frolic. The event will be held in the Crest View Gathering Room at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the east side of the Fairmount campus. Kay L. Moyer, safety nurse educator from the Cooperative Extension Service, supplies the materials to make vests and assemble kits to donate to local schoolchildren who walk or bike on back roads. Those who would like to help cut pieces of fabric fastener or reflective tape for the vests or assemble the cut pieces into kits are invited to join the project. Those who cannot attend but are interested in helping in their own home may call 717-394-6851. Due to increased demand, there is a great need for more people to sew, as well as for someone to cut fabric for vests. Donations are also needed to purchase additional materials for more vests. More information may also be found at www.FairmountHomes.org.
