Couple Honored By Seminary BY ANN MEAD ASH
“As a couple, we love sharing the gifts and talents the Lord has given both of us with others, especially the nonprofits we cherish,” said Beth Bostwick, speaking for herself

and her husband, Bernie, about the recent Friends of Evangelical Seminary Servant Leader Corporate Partner Awards the couple received at the end of 2020. “We are humbled by this award,” continued Beth. “(We) feel that there are so many business partners and collaborators who are worthy of this as well.” In a normal year, the Bostwicks would have received their award when Evangelical Seminary, located in Myerstown, held its fall banquet, but 2020 was not a normal year. When the banquet was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, representatives of Evangelical Seminary traveled to the offices of the couple’s businesses, Masterpiece Marketing and Ambassador Advisors in Lancaster, to present the award. Mitch Dissinger Talks About New Holland
ifelong New Holland resident Mitch Dissinger, who owns Lickity Split with his wife, Gina, sat down a while ago to talk about things to do in his hometown. Recalling a restaurant customer who came from another Lancaster County town, he said, “(They told us), ‘We come here because New Holland is (so) active. You have (so much) going on all the time.’” As one of the founders of the New Holland Area Historical Society, Mitch has a particular interest in the past. In addition to the historical society museum, located above the restaurant at 207 E. Main St., he points out the New Holland Band Museum on the second floor of the
L
ELANCO Library and the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Society on Spruce Road. The Kauffman Building, where Lickity Split and the museum are located, is a historical building, which was originally a tavern and later a general store.
“(They told us), ‘We come here because New Holland is (so) active. You have (so much) going on all the time.’” Mitch is an avid biker. He rode across the continental United States in 1983, and he has taken part in the Pedal to Preserve rides to support the Lancaster Farmland Trust that once originated at
Garden Spot Village. “New Holland is a great place to bike ride,” said Mitch. “You can do 20 miles around here and see lots of countryside.” The greater New Holland area also offers wilderness activities, such as hiking at the Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve in East Earl, which is part of the Lancaster Conservancy and Money Rocks County Park in Narvon. Mitch pointed out that the Groff Miller Park off Railroad Avenue is landscaped with trees and bushes that are native to Pennsylvania and that Nolt’s Pond offers fishing and a place to see ducks. The New Holland Community Memorial Park on Jackson Street and the Welsh Mountain Community Park both offer play areas for children in addition to other amenities.
Like food banks across the nation, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has been challenged during the coronavirus pandemic. However, thanks to donations from local businesses, help from governmental programs, the generosity of the community and the services of volunteers, the food bank remains committed to fulfill its mission, “fighting hunger, improving lives, strengthening communities.”

Garden Spot Village wood shop member Jim Rittenhouse (left) and associate director of development Allison Cuthie display items that will be sold in the upcoming annual Birdhouse Auction.
This year, the auction will be structured using two separate platforms - the traditional indoor silent auction and an online auction. According to Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with GSV, about 50 items will be offered on each platform. The silent auction will be held in the Village Square Indoor Park, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. The indoor auction opened Jan. 29, and it will end on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. Those wishing to visit this auction will need to undergo a COVID-19 screening at the front door. Hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The online auction can be accessed at www.gardenspotvillage.org. Items went up for bids on Feb. 1, and the auction will end on Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Cuthie noted that the seasonal event gives all those involved a glimpse of the warmer months. “During the winter, there’s a blah feeling, and this is something to help us look forward to spring and birds and flowers,” she pointed out, adding that the items in the auction, known for being bright and whimsical, offer special variety this year. “With people staying inside (due to) COVID, it really brought out a lot of creativity,” she shared, recalling that the event that started with the wood shop now involves quilters, crafters, cross stitchers, and the art guild. According to Cuthie, this year’s creations will not only be plentiful, but they will also exhibit originality. Birdhouses will range from traditional log cabins to those made of unusual materials, such as wine corks, along with those that are designed to be functional for certain types of birds. One creation resembles a miniature guitar, and another displays the round shape of a castle turret. Many are painted in bright colors, and some are covered in decoupage. Bird-themed items include decorative shutters, quilted items adorned with bright red cardi-

community that offers much in the way of activity and industry. “People come here to work,” he said, “We have world-class businesses,” he added, referencing Tyson, Case New Holland (CNH), and the Savencia Cheese USA factory, which has roots in France. He noted that the CNH factory tour is interesting. “It’s a pretty cool (tour) to do,” he said. Unfortunately, the tour is not available presently due to COVID. “In the summer, we have the New Holland Summer Arts Program and all the concerts (it organizes) three times a week,” said Mitch of the series that has been a fixture in New Holland for decades. For year-round music and entertainment, Mitch pointed to Cavod Community Theatre, located in the New Holland Shopping Center. Mitch called the venue, which has offered several plays and musicals per year for a decade a “treasure” in New Holland. Mitch said he is proud to live in a

Garden Spot came up short in a Section Three girls’ basketball game at Lampeter-Strasburg on Monday, February 8. The Pioneers’ dominant first half helped them hold off the Spartans 55-31. The Spartans fell to 0-6 in the Lancaster-Lebanon League (0-9 overall) while the Pioneers, who are chasing first-place Cocalico in the section standings, improved to 6-2, 7-3 The bulk of the Spartans’ offense came from Erin Gonzalez and Taylor Soehner. Gonzalez put up 14 points, including a pair of three-point baskets. Soehner finished with 13 points. Emma Drouillard led the Pioneers with 11 points. Teammate Hailey Leaman added 10. The previous week, the Spartans had come close to claiming their first win of the year in a non-league game at Cedar Crest. In that Thursday evening contest, they took a 22-10 lead into the second half. That was when the Falcons’ offense came alive, outscoring Garden Spot 25-9 the rest of the way for a 35-31 triumph. SWIMMING A handful of Garden Spot swimmers competed in the LancasterLebanon League Championships that were held on Thursday and Friday, February 4-5, at the Roy G. Snyder Natatorium at Wilson High School. Team captain Ashley Parry led the way for Garden Spot, placing second in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.77. Parry, who’s a senior, grabbed fourth in the 100 butterfly at 58.67, improving from last year’s fifth-place time of 59.77. “I’m really proud of her 100 fly time,” said Garden Spot coach Darin Parry. “She has struggled to consistently stay under a minute in the event. Consistency is the key. (serving) 200,000 people,” said Joe Arthur, executive director. “The vast majority of those folks that came for help last year was directly related to COVID - job loss, losing (work) hours and the economic impact.” He noted that, with safety in mind, the food bank and its partners began distributing food in a drive-up format. Programs offered by the food bank include Military Share, which provides fresh food for families with at least one member who served or is serving in the armed forces, and the ElderShare program, which provides a monthly box of food to seniors who meet certain income

guidelines. Food bank volunteers also pack and distribute boxes for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) monthly Commodity Supplemental Food Program for low-income seniors. Arthur said that the food bank and its programs were able to thrive with additional assistance. “We have had extra help from the big federal programs that came down, like the CARES Act, and there was extra funding and food that came from the USDA and our state Department of Agriculture,” he noted. From the start of the pandemic, the food bank began to prepare for a long-term crisis. “Back in March, we knew it would be big, and we started sending out (donation) letters and we received immediate response,” Arthur stated. “Our appeals for extra help have (resulted in) a lot of generosity. It has been inspiring - the response we have
received from people, foundations and businesses that are doing OK.” The community is invited to continue to help the food bank through donations or by volunteering to help sort and pack food. Since in-person food drives are currently suspended, people may take part in a virtual food drive by visiting www.centralpafoodbank.org/ways-to-give/givefunds/virtual-food-drive. Arthur said that area residents should also support their local food banks in the next few months, when the need is especially strong. “We call it the ‘heat or eat’ season when people decide whether to buy food or pay their heating bill,” he added. notched a pin at the 152 while Casey came away with one at 126. Diego Portales posted a pin in the 120pound bout, finishing the job in 45 seconds. The Spartans were also aided by a half dozen Trojan forfeits. Portales pitched a shutout against his Northeastern opponent, defeating Constantino Kocoronis 60 to get Garden Spot underway. The Spartans won 62-12. Gehr gained another technical, winning 16-1 over Nekoda Keller at 132 while Casey (126) and Schilling (138) pinned their respective opponents. The momentum continued with falls also coming at 145 (Aaron Martin) and 152 (Redcay). Mason Musser pinned Tyler Schmerge at 215. This was sand-
wiched between two very quick pins by teammates Tyler Hurst (189) and Swanson (285), both of whom finished the job in under 30 seconds. Adam Hahn earned another six points with a fall at 106. The Spartans squared off against Donegal on Tuesday, February 9 at home. In a meet that was closely contested, the Spartans finished on the short end of a 35-21 final. The Indians won a few close decisions - Silas Mumper edging Aaron Martin 5-4 at 145, Joel Grillo’s 8-5 victory over Tyler Hurst at 189 and Josiah Smucker’s frustrating 4-0 loss at 120. Donegal registered two pins and a technical while Swanson earned a pin for Garden Spot (285) and Hahn claimed one more at 106. Casey came away with a 13-6 decision at 126.

Beth was introduced to Evangelical Seminary more than a decade ago by then seminary president Michael Sigmund. Since then, Beth and her team at Masterpiece Marketing have worked with school leaders, including current president Tony Blair, on rebranding, developing a new logo, and designing the annual report, among other projects. “I have had the pleasure of collaborating with Evangelical Seminary’s leadership to shape inspirational marketing tactics that meet their organizational goals and motivate supporters,” said Beth, who added that she values the school’s focus on training students to effectively serve, care, train, and mentor. “Their goal is to create leaders who will be conduits of change and boldly preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” she said. Ambassador Advisors, a Christian financial planning entity, has aided the board of Evangelical Seminary in managing the school’s endowment since 2013. “I’ve experienced firsthand, from leadership and staff, the dedication and love for the mission of the seminary,” said Bernie, president of Ambassador Advisors, who added that the firm has also been involved in planned giving and the school’s efforts to create a museum. “It has … sparked a desire to join others who give their time, talent, and treasures to advance the mission of the seminary.” Bernie recalled that he began a relationship with Jesus Christ while serving his country in the Air Force. Recognizing the importance of sharing Christ with those in the armed services, he is especially impressed with the seminary’s tuition-free Master of Divinity program degree for military chaplain candidates. Bernie also noted the significance of the school’s work to bring the community into conversation through its Faith in the Marketplace breakfast series, which was held regularly prior to COVID-19 restrictions. The program features speakers who discuss “how to let your light shine for Christ in a secular business.” “It’s a very meaningful way to connect,” noted Bernie. Beth summed up her reaction to the honor by noting that her relationship with the seminary has been mutually beneficial. “Working with a client like Evangelical Seminary (that) sees challenges or barriers as an opportunity rather than a threat inspires our team of marketing consultants,” she said. “Our team has been blessed through this positive attitude.” Readers who would like to learn more about the seminary may visit https://evangelical.edu/about /about-evangelical.
