Top Five Finish
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen Kendell Moats, New Holland’s first fair queen, was called as one of the top five finishers at the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs (PSACF) Queen Contest in Hershey on Jan. 21, her “nerves were jumping.” However, when Kendell was asked a final question while the other top four contestants were offstage in a soundproof room, she knew her answer.
The question was, “Hershey’s slogan is ‘The Sweetest Place on Earth.’ If you were the next state fair queen, what slogan would you give the fair queen program?” “I said, ‘Always Learning … Always Advocating,’ which is something I have lived the last four years,” said Kendell. The Garden Spot High School (GSHS) senior then explained that she does not come from an agricultural background, but she has endeavored to learn all she can about local agriculture,
becoming president of the high school’s Grassland FFA chapter and hosting a podcast named “Growing With Kendell,” which uses the same slogan.
Kendell’s journey to a top-five finish began when she was crowned the first New Holland fair queen on Sept. 28, 2022. On Jan. 19, Kendell and her grandmother Missy Moats headed for the Hershey Lodge, where the PSACF queen competition was held as part of the organization’s 110th convention. Each day, the contestants took part in an activity where they were judged against more than 50 other girls representing fairs from around Pennsylvania. On the first day, Kendell walked up on stage in front of about 900 people to introduce herself and her county and give a fun fact about her home. “I said, ‘My name is Kendell Moats, and I am from New Holland. I am proud to be the first New Holland fair queen in the home of the Case New Holland tractor.’”
Each of the contestants also took part in a six-minute interview.
Kendell showed the judges the location of Lancaster County on a map of Pennsylvania, and then she was asked questions about GSHS, her FFA experiences, and her podcast. All contestants were also required to give a speech about why people should attend the fair they represent. Kendell said she had added to her speech by focusing on key foods sold only at the New Holland Fair, such as Lickity Split’s cotton candy float and the hot ham and cheese sandwiches the New Holland Lions Club is known for. She also pointed out that members of Grassland FFA and 4-H come together to plan the livestock show, which attracts contestants from around the county.
Following her speech, Kendell prepared for the coronation banquet that evening, donning a “pink, sparkly” dress for the event. The reigning queen gave a closing
To Save a Life
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Chad Roberts gave a presentation about Project Lifesaver at the East Lampeter Police Department near the end of 2022, an attendee asked if he might visit Garden Spot Village (GSV) to share information about the device that helps locate people with cognitive impairment who are prone to wander. Roberts, who is willing to discuss the benefits of Project Lifesaver with area groups, quickly set up a meeting with GSV staff.

speech before the top five contestants were named. When Kendell’s name was called first, the contingency from New Holland began cheering, and, although she did not win, Kendell is pleased with her accomplishment. “To be top five for the first year of New Holland having a fair queen, I am proud of myself and everyone who has gotten me to this point,” she said.
At GSHS, Kendell is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serves as the student representative to the ELANCO School Board, and has been an intern in the marketing department of Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. After graduation, she plans to attend college to major in communications and minor in public relations.
The New Holland Farmers Fair recently celebrated its 90th anniversary. More information about the organization may be found at http://newhollandfair.org.

Cavod to Stage
“Hello, Dolly!”
BY ANN MEAD ASHAccording to Alicia Burton, director of “Hello, Dolly!” at Cavod Theatre, the show is about finding joy in each moment. Musical director Amy Rau concurred, pointing out that Dolly is going through a difficult time, but that she is stepping out in faith. “Even in the hardest things we go through, you’ve got to find the bright side,” she said.
“Hello Dolly!” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, with a dinner theater at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. The
show will also be performed at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 3; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Feb. 25 and March 4; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 26 and March 5.
“Hello, Dolly!” centers around lovable widow and matchmaker Dolly Levi, played by Erin Wright. The musical follows her to New York to practice her matchmaking and heal her own heart. Along the way, Dolly matches up Irene Molloy, played by Eliza Moran, with Cornelius Hackl, played by Alex Weaver, and Barnaby Tucker, played by Richard Weaver, with See Cavod pg 3
Textile Science Club Will Meet
The Ephrata Cocalico 4-H Club, a textile science club, will hold an organizational meeting on Monday, Feb. 27, at the Ephrata Fair Association office, 19 S. State St., Ephrata, from 6 to 8 p.m. The program is open to youths ages 8 to 18. Parents are asked to attend the meeting with their child.
Members should bring a pencil and all sewing supplies and equipment with them to the meeting. A schedule of the project meeting
dates and an agenda for each project will be available at the meeting.
The club will offer beginner and intermediate sewing projects and will meet at the fair office on Mondays from 6 to 8 p.m. from March through June. A team of leaders will teach the necessary skills to complete the 4-H approved projects and prepare each member for competition in regional and county events.
Sewing equipment, including
machines, pins, an iron and ironing board, some shears, and scissors will be available for member use. Each member will be responsible for the cost of the items for his or her project. A variety of small skill-building projects will be used to complete each project.
For more information, call Amanda Good at 307-760-0436. For more information on joining 4-H, contact Lori Little at 717-394-6851 or lancasterext@psu.edu.
Potter’s House Posts Banquet
The Potter’s House will host its 15th annual Celebration Banquet on Thursday, March 9, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.
The event, themed “Free Indeed,” will feature Lancaster County Commissioner Ray D’Agostino as the keynote speaker along with several testimonies from students, graduates and staff members.
The banquet is free and open to
the public, but reservations are required by Friday, Feb. 24. To register, visit www.thepottershouse lancaster.com, email communications @pottershousepa.org or call Troy at 717-615-0296. Opportunities will be given to support the ministry.
Minnie Fay, played by Melina Nicole Stratigos. Dolly also solves romantic problems plaguing Ermengarde Kemper, played by Jada Correll, and Ambrose Kemper, played by Lincoln Everett. In the end, Dolly provides Horace Vandergelder, played by Steve Rau, with a suitable wife as well. The cast of more than 25 will also feature Jess Zeidler as Ernestina.
“‘Hello, Dolly!’ is a spectacular show,” said Burton, who noted Cavod Theatre was in a good position to stage the dance-heavy musical because Cavod Performing Arts trains dancers. “We have been able to utilize their strengths,” she said. Burton noted that large numbers including “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” and “Hello, Dolly!” call for families and townspeople in the ensemble. Both Amy Rau and Burton said they were blessed to see lots of teens and children at auditions.
Amy said that the songs themselves are joyful and memorable. “You cannot listen to ‘Put on Your Sunday Clothes’ without smiling ear-to-ear,” she said. “The music is so much fun.”
“You leave singing these songs,” added Burton, who is also enjoying working with the cast members practicing the Broadway classic. “The seasoned leads are thrilled to have the opportunity to play these iconic roles, and we are getting to teach the younger ones about this

Garden Spot boys’ basketball wrapped up its 2022-23 season with a home game against LancasterLebanon League rival Conestoga Valley on Thursday, February 9.
“It was a five- or six-point game going into the fourth quarter,” said Nate Musselman, the Spartans head coach. “We had a few turnovers in the fourth quarter.”
The Buckskins outscored the Spartans 23-9 in the final period and came away with a 64-44 victory.
Sophomore Jace Conrad led the Spartans in scoring with 16 points. Michael Heisley netted nine points.
Conestoga’s Griffen Rishell led all scorers with 20 points.
The Spartans wrapped up the season at 6-16 with a 39 mark in the league.
In looking at the 3-6 start this group had, it is important to point out that all six of the early season setbacks were by six or fewer points.
“We lost some close games to start the season and our seniors showed the younger guys how to stay in games,” Musselman said.
“We had a great senior class,” he added. “Along with the young group we had, you couldn’t ask for a better senior class. They were a great group of kids for our young guys to learn from. Majority of times we would have two or three sophomores on the court and maybe a freshman.”
Along with Conrad, other sophomores getting significant minutes included A.J. Hurst and Jeff St. Jean along with junior Lance Binkley and freshman Drew Tibbins.
“We will be returning guys who played a lot of varsity basketball this year,” Musselman added.
“Surprisingly, we might be even younger next year,” Musselman laughed. “We only have two juniors, who’ll be our returning seniors next year. We have a good group of incoming freshmen too.”
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Garden Spot’s girls’ basketball
team took to the road in finishing the regular season. Spot visited Conestoga Valley on Thursday, February 9.
With a fast start out of the gate, the Buckskins outscored the Spartans 19-5 in the first quarter. They maintained the momentum for much of the game, posting a 60-29 victory.
Gwen Varley, a junior, was on target four times from three-point range, finishing with 13 points on the night. Morgan Pavelik came away with 10 points.
Rhiannon Henry scored 16 for CV as the Buckskins improved to 6-16 (5-7 league). Garden Spot fell to 319 overall (2-10 league).
SWIMMING
In the L-L League Championship meet, which was held on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11, at Wilson, a group of Garden Spot swimmers not only competed, they represented the
school in remarkable fashion.
On the first day, Peter Hasse finished fifth in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.14. On the girls’ side, freshman Mia Parry was the champ in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.77
Garden Spot does not have a swim team, yet individual swimmers can compete in the league championship meet and, given qualifying times, in district and state meets as well.
“She beat her older sister and defending 200 IM champion from last year - Kayla Parry,” said Garden Spot coach Darin Parry. Meanwhile Kayla finished second in the 100 butterfly in 58.23 seconds.
“Kayla has struggled through some setbacks this season,” added the coach. “But she has shown great perseverance with a hunger to compete.”
Kayla Parry had won the 200 IM and 100 fly events in the 2022 L-L
League championships. Also swimming in the two-day event was Zach Delgado, who earned 10th place in the 50 freestyle. On Saturday he took 15th in the 100 free, dropping 1.16 seconds.
“Zach just keeps getting faster and faster,” said Parry. “He continues to strive to be better. His best days are ahead of him.”
Hasse returned on Saturday, finishing sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.42.
“It was an eye-popping drop of 4.71 seconds,” Parry said.
Speaking of eye-popping, Parry spoke of a minor injury suffered by one of his girls.
“Mia and Peter collided during warm-ups, which resulted in Mia breaking her goggles and sustaining a bruise under her left eye. For most of the meet, she had an ice pack pressed against the eye.
“In spite of the injury, she put up a phenomenal swim,” continued the coach.
She finished second in the 100 backstroke with a lifetime best of 58.59 seconds.
“Mia put the L-L League on notice that she isn’t intimidated by the big stage,” Parry said. “She challenged two seniors who were defending 2022 champions and put up personal bests while finishing ahead of them both.”
AIR RIFLE
The L-L League air rifle championships took place at Conestoga Valley on Saturday, February 11. In a close finish, Garden Spot’s Leksi Bender earned the top spot by scoring 200 on the day with two center targets.

Bender was one of eight shooters to compile a score of 200. The difference was Bender hitting two perfect centers, thus edging Kate Kruft of Elizabethtown - also two centers.
Sierra Land of Conestoga Valley and Alyssa Dunn of Manheim Township earned the bronze medal. They tied for third place with 200’s with no center targets.
As a team, the Spartans finished fourth on the day. Township took top spot with 994 points followed by Elizabethtown (991) and Ephrata (990). The Spartans compiled 985 pointsone point on top of Manheim Central.
WRESTLING
The Spartans visited Daniel Boone for their final regular season wrestling match. Garden Spot won three of the bouts plus a Blazers forfeit at the 107-pound weight class.
The Blazers came away with a 4422 victory, thanks to two early forfeits by the Spartans, two major decisions, three pins and a technical fall.
Along with Diego Portales posting a 9-1 major decision for Spot at 133, Tyler Hurst pinned Jamie Harris in the second period of the 215-pound bout. In addition, Mason Musser notched a pin 1:16 into the 285-pound match.

Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a designated radio frequency assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the battery-operated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. Should a participant go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department, and police officers pick up the frequency to locate that specific transmitter. The equipment utilizes analog radio frequency because of its reliability. Use of the system minimizes time and resources needed to locate someone, and when it is employed, most participants who wander are found within 30 minutes.
In fact, Roberts reported that missing area residents have been found quickly when the device is employed. “In the past year or so,

Lancaster County has had a few Project Lifesaver clients wander off, and (they) were located within approximately 30 minutes of (loved ones) calling police,” said Roberts, who pointed to a Lancaster city incident and one in Manheim Borough. “Both individuals were returned to their loved ones safe and unharmed thanks to Project Lifesaver and the responding officers,” he said.
In Lancaster County, Project Lifesaver was initiated by The Pilot Club of Lancaster, a service organization. In 2008, Pilot Club members connected with Chief Mark Pugliese of the West Hempfield Township Police Department. In 2012, the project launched from that location. Troop J began participating with Project Lifesaver a few years ago. “(We) are proud to have this as a tool to aid in locating people that wander,” said Roberts.
