CrossNet Slates Hybrid Banquet Featuring Scott Hamilton BY ANN MEAD ASH
Girls on the Run Lancaster is unveiling a spring curriculum that can be used virtually or in person. Coaches are needed to help girls benefit from this developmental program.
Breaking Down Barriers: GOTR Adapts For Safety And Flexibility
“ We knew this would be the safest plan, and we’re excited about it,” said Meredith Dahl, executive director of CrossNet Ministries in New Holland, of the upcoming banquet, which will feature Scott Hamilton. The banquet will be held in a hybrid format - an in-person event at Warehouse 100 on Franklin Street, New Holland, and livestreamed to watch parties. Watch parties will include a familystyle meal. Those with access to Facebook will be able to watch free. The banquet will be held on Tuesday, March 30. Those purchasing the virtual option may pick up food at the Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl, in a drive-through format starting at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., the livestream event will start via a link for those who purchased a meal or by Facebook. Hamilton has won 70 titles, awards, and honors, and he has been
inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame. He first captured the world’s attention in 1984 with his Olympic gold medal performance in Sarajevo. He is the author of three books and is a figure skating commentator. Hamilton lost his mother to cancer and later became a cancer survivor himself. He responded to those challenges by launching the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation. He makes his home with his wife, Tracie, and four children outside Nashville. See CrossNet pg 3
Champion figure skater, author, and commentator Scott Hamilton will speak at the hybrid CrossNet Ministries banquet, which will be livestreamed on March 30.

arrie Johnson, executive director with Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, wants to make it clear that the program is open to all girls in the age groups it serves. “Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” In accordance with that goal, the spring 2021 program has been changed to accommodate COVID-19 restrictions. “We’ve adapted our program to make it totally safe and flexible for girls and coaches,” explained program director Jennifer West, who noted that the organization

“Any girl can participate,” said Johnson. “We want to remove all limitations, whether financial, physical, or emotional. We want to remove those so that any girl can benefit.” A new virtual curriculum was written to match in-person lessons, and the program has eliminated shared materials by providing each girl with her own journals, hand sanitizer, and a cinch sack for storage. Masking
and social distancing in compliance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines are followed. Team members meet in person when they can, at their school if possible, or in parks, at churches, or in community buildings. West explained that if schools close, a virtual practice can be held, with the lesson presented virtually. West stated that what has not changed is the lesson content. GOTR’s goals are to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living among girls. “They still get the same great lessons about practicing empathy and standing up for themselves and others, and we still take part in a community impact project,” shared West.
Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), first heard of Matt Stutzman from Matt’s cousin, Steve Stutzman. “(Steve) said, ‘Maybe you should have my cousin who is a professional archer (speak at your sportsman banquet).

Building For The Future LCHS Plans Remodel And Expansion BY ANN MEAD ASH
community was part of the research. “(We asked) what were the top priorities, and the answer was interesting,” Hamer shared. “Exactly 50% thought that building a fine and performing arts facility and auditorium and modernizing the cafeteria was a top priority,” said Hamer. “The other 50% thought that modernizing our STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) facilities was a priority.” Hamer noted that the request for STEM facilities fit well with curricular changes the school was already making. “We are rewriting our entire curriculum simultaneously with the strategic plan,” said Hamer, who noted that LCHS will equip the center based on a STEM curriculum designed by leading educators called Project Lead the Way. “These are experientially based curricula for biomedicine, computer science, and engineering,” he said. The STEM Innovation Center, which will replace the third floor of Riley Hall, is slated to be under construction before students leave school in May. The new auditorium, which will
As Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) prepares to start construction on a new STEM Innovation Center, Phase 1A of the largest remodel effort in the school’s more than 90year history, school president Tim Hamer is looking forward to equipping the building to match the curriculum. “The once-in-a-lifetime rebuilding was informed by what we need to do to teach what we want to teach,” said Hamer. LCHS chose Marotta/Main Architects to design the remodel after holding a competition. “The beauty of this (plan) is the efficiency of being within the existing footprint of the school,” said Hamer. “We are repurposing space.” The renovation, which will also include a Student Commons and dining hall and a performing arts center, has its roots in the school’s strategic plan. “We needed to modernize the facility to offer students 21st-century learning tools,” explained Hamer. “That was the priority of our student plan.” A feasibility survey of the LCHS

replace the 1929 gym currently being used for presentations, and the Student Commons and dining area, which will replace the cafeteria built in 1974, will be Phase 1B, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2022. “We will be using the space that is now the cafeteria, which has no floor over it,” said Hamer. “We will build the auditorium there because we can go up and stay within the footprint of the school.” Hamer noted that a triangular courtyard that exists where the three wings of the school join together will be filled in and connected to the school library. “That is where the cafeteria and Student
Commons will be moved so we can make room for the auditorium.” Through its Cherish - Love - Honor campaign, LCHS has raised nearly $9 million of the initial $12 million needed for the renovations. Hamer emphasized that no funds will be borrowed for the project. “This (plan) is far less expensive than the alternatives, and it allows for a better flow and use of space,” he said, noting that the present building represents eras of construction that were decades apart. “This is a way to meld them together. It’s very exciting.” To learn more about the building campaign, readers may visit www.cherishlovehonor.com.

We can’t do this without the community, so there is the idea of togetherness and lives are changed.” A freewill offering is always an important part of the fundraiser. GOTR from pg 1 GOTR staff members are looking for places for students to meet and are also seeking volunteer team coaches, which are essential to the program. “It’s a unique mentoring opportunity,” said Johnson, who added that the girls who participate are not the only ones who benefit. “It changes a coach’s life,” she noted. West pointed out that coaches need not be runners. “Men, women, college students, and high school students (can be coaches),” said West, who added that having a heart to help girls grow up with self-esteem is key. “You have to have a desire to help the girls and have meaningful conversations,” explained West. “Be a positive role model, be silly, and play fun games that’s what our coaches do.” West added that training materials for volunteer coaches are online and self-paced. “We provide the curriculum, all the materials, and support to get them set up for a successful season,” she stated. Johnson added that girls are especially in need of GOTR programming during these unusual times. “Seventy-nine percent of our girls are experiencing feelings of loneliness and depression as a result of the pandemic,” said Johnson. “We need our coaches
to lead now more than ever.” West agreed. “(The girls) need the social interaction with friends in a safe environment, and that’s what GOTR is,” she said. “GOTR is a safe space where girls can gather and truly belong,” Johnson stated. Registration for the spring season will open on Monday, March 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 29. Readers who wish to register a girl or volunteer may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. Stephen Glaus, who began offering individual 12-week training sessions in the MS Fitness Challenge at the Lititz recCenter in January, is living proof that the program, which utilizes focused exercise and nutrition, can have positive results. In 2018, Stephen experienced significant mobility impairment and blurred and double vision from multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune disease that causes nerve damage and interferes with communication from the brain to the body. In the fall of 2020, he completed a virtual Ironman - swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles from Reading to Marietta, and running 26.2 miles. Stephen’s journey with MS began in July 2018. At the age of 27, the Elizabethtown native was working in his dream job as a drone salesman in California. “On a business trip to Japan, my left foot went completely numb,” he recalled. Three weeks later, Stephen had lost the ability to walk unaided, and he was dealing with other complications. Realizing his life would change dramatically, Stephen left his job in California, and he and his wife, Nikki, returned to Elizabethtown. Characterizing himself as “stubborn,” Stephen refused to accept the doctor’s predictions that he would be using a wheelchair in two years. Instead, he began researching resources and came across the book “David’s Goliath” by David Lyons, which outlines the MS Fitness Challenge. Stephen connected with

Lyons, who founded the MS Fitness Challenge organization, and Lyons began coaching Stephen. He also made dietary recommendations. As the two men became acquainted, Lyons felt that Stephen would be an asset to the organization. “I jumped aboard,” said Stephen who began studying for his personal trainer license, which he received from the National Federation of Personal Trainers in March of 2019. Stephen’s health slowly improved, and he began thinking about doing a full Ironman triathlon. He met a former Navy SEAL, with whom he shared his Ironman dream. “I didn’t know how to swim, so once a week he got in the pool with me and taught me to swim,” said Stephen. Soon a 3-mile swim was no problem. Weeks before Stephen was to complete his full Ironman, he learned that COVID-19 restrictions had forced organizers to cancel. “MS is a time bomb,” said Stephen. “You never know when the next relapse will come.” Uncomfortable with waiting for the 2021 event, Stephen found a virtual platform that allowed him to realize his goal with help from his long-distance swimming coach, Louise Hyder-Darlington, and his father, who drove along on the bicycle route and biked beside his son during the run. Glaus now works with individuals one-on-one to implement the MS Fitness Challenge. “If someone has lower leg

Mitch said he is proud to live in a community that offers much in the way of activity and industry. “People come here to work,” he said, “We have world-class businesses,” he added, referencing Tyson, Case New Holland (CNH), and the Savencia Cheese USA factory, which has roots in France. Lifelong New Holland resident Mitch Dissinger, who owns Lickity Split with his wife, Gina, sat down a while ago to talk about things to do in his hometown. Recalling a restaurant customer who came from another Lancaster County town, he said, “(They told us), ‘We come here because New Holland is (so) active. You have (so much) going on all the time.’” As one of the founders of the New Holland Area Historical Society, Mitch has a particular interest in the past. In addition to the historical society museum, located above the restaurant at 207 E. Main St., he points out the New Holland Band Museum on the second floor of the ELANCO Library and the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Society on Spruce Road. The Kauffman Building, where Lickity Split and the museum are located, is a historical building, which was originally a tavern and later a general store. Mitch is an avid biker. He rode across the continental United States in 1983, and he has taken part in the Pedal to Preserve rides to support the Lancaster Farmland Trust that
once originated at Garden Spot Village. “New Holland is a great place to bike ride,” said Mitch. “You can do 20 miles around here and see lots of countryside.” The greater New Holland area also offers wilderness activities, such as hiking at the Welsh Mountain Nature Preserve in East Earl, which is part of the Lancaster Conservancy and Money Rocks County Park in Narvon. Mitch pointed out that the Groff Miller Park off Railroad Avenue is landscaped with trees and bushes that are native to Pennsylvania and that Nolt’s Pond offers fishing and a place to see ducks. The New Holland Community Memorial Park on Jackson Street and the Welsh Mountain Community Park both offer play areas for children in addition to other amenities. “In the summer, we have the New Holland Summer Arts Program and all the concerts (it organizes) three times a week,” said Mitch of the series that has been a fixture in New Holland for decades. For year-round music and entertainment, Mitch pointed to Cavod Community Theatre, located in the New Holland Shopping Center.

Inspired by a desire to give back, two local moms have created a group to help others. Mitzvah Moms was created by Gina Krouse of Lampeter and Gena Harting of Strasburg in the fall of 2020. Initially, the pair focused on collecting items for the homeless, but they then shifted their mission to helping people affected by COVID-19. “COVID started hitting close to home,” Harting said. “We knew someone at our synagogue who got sick, so we put together a basket for them. Then, someone in my moms’ group was affected. We started tossing around the idea of creating a group called Mitzvah Moms because it sounded cute and also because we thought there might be other people who would like to do this with us.” The pair created a Facebook group and soon had almost 100 members. “Mitzvah” is a Hebrew word that means “good deed.” The friends use their Facebook group to create gift baskets to give to people affected by COVID-19.
“The baskets include a new, soft blanket and self-care products to help with decongestion,” Krouse noted. “They also have snacks because everybody loves food. It’s a basket of comfort items. We wanted to focus on the comfort, warmth and support.” Baskets are catered to the individual, and all recipients are kept as confidential as possible, she stated, adding, “We ask for some basic information about the person receiving the basket ... so they get a basket that really fits their needs and wants.” Mitzvah Moms took off quickly as word spread through the friends’ network as well as their synagogue, Shaarai Shomayim in Lancaster. “Our rabbi is involved with the Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster, and we asked him if he would consider spreading the word among other congregation leaders and passing names our way,” Krouse explained. The women said donations of items for baskets and monetary gifts have been overwhelming, and in fact, they currently have more donations than people to receive them.
“It’s a good problem to have,” Harting stated. “We’re facing the challenge of trying to reach out and identify more people who would like a basket.” Harting and Krouse, who have four children among them and homeschool their kids, said Mitzvah Moms has offered a way to set an example for their families while also making a difference in their community. They have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who have offered to help with their project. “The purpose for this goes way beyond our children and giving from ourselves,” Krouse said. “There are so many people out there who want to help and want to show their love for their community.” Although they are currently focused on the pandemic, the pair said they plan to continue supporting others once COVID-19 is gone. “We’re already brainstorming ideas for our next projects,” Harting noted. “We are looking at the longevity of Mitzvah Moms and continuing to give back.” The group is seeking both volunteers to help deliver baskets as well as nominations for recipients of baskets. For more information on Mitzvah Moms, readers may email mitzvahmomsrock@gmail.com, search for “Mitzvah Moms” on Facebook or visit https://mitzvahmoms rock.weebly.com/.
Mitzvah Moms have a mission to help others, delivering gift baskets to people affected by COVID-19. Helping to spread the love are (back row, from left) Josiah Krouse, Gina Krouse, Gena Harting, (from row) Elaine Krouse, Ryder Harting and William Krouse.

Garden Spot’s Corey Ream looks to put a rebound back up against Lancaster Catholic’s Ross Conway during the Spartans’ 65-46, nonleague loss to the host Crusaders on February 12.
Following two close losses, the Spartans fell to 4-9 on the year and 2-4 in league play. Coming off their 65-46 loss at Lancaster Catholic on Friday, February 12, the Spartans came up short by an aggregate total of six points in their next two contests. At Lancaster Catholic, the Crusaders carried the momentum into and out of the locker room at halftime. Garden Spot’s two-point lead faded in the second half as the Crusaders worked a 33-26 lead at the midway point. They outscored the Spartans 21-8 in the third stanza. The biggest contributor to the Garden Spot offense was Brendan Weaver, who put up 16 points. He hit a pair of treys and was 2-for-2 at the charity stripe. The Saturday loss at Solanco was a back-and-forth flow of momentum. Solanco took charge in the second quarter and gained a 31-24 halftime edge before the Spartans went on a third-quarter 17-9 run to make it 41-40 in their favor. The home team managed to eke out a 51-49 victory as the Mules earned their first win of the year. Joseph Sharp led the Spartans with 11 points while Weaver and Dylan Nolt each scored eight. In a non-league game at Octorara on Tuesday, the basketball was finding the net at a rapid pace, particularly from three-point range. The Spartans swooshed in 12 treys while the Braves connected three times. Both teams finished with over 20 points in the second and third periods. In the end, the four-point edge Octorara held after one period was the winning margin in the Braves’ 75-71 triumph. Jesse Martin, with six triples,
scored 20 points for the Spartans. Nolt scorched three more treys and finished with 11 while Steiner’s 10point game included a pair of treys. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Garden Spot girls’ basketball team posted back-to-back wins as the Spartans improved to 2-10 on the year. On a Saturday afternoon game in New Holland, the Spartans topped Solanco 49-42. It was the team’s first Section Three win of the year. Hosting Pequea Valley on Tuesday, February 16, they came away with a 44-40 non-league victory. Garden Spot rebounded nicely after a 70-47 defeat on Friday, February 12. They came out the very next afternoon and improved their league record to 1-6 by beating Solanco. Solanco held a slim two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter of the game but the Spartans outscored Solanco 22-13 down the stretch. Morgan Pavelik led all scorers. The Spartan freshman poured in 18 points, including a pair of threepointers. Taylor Soehner contributed 14 points, including a perfect 8for-8 at the free throw line. Caroline Martin’s 11-point game also gave the offense a huge lift. Against Pequea, the Spartans dominated the first half, taking a 26-10 lead at halftime. The Braves trimmed only one point off that deficit heading into the final period where they outscored the Spartans 18-7. Garden Spot hung on to win by four. Sohner and the Braves’ Sarah Arment shared game-high honors with 18 points each. Pavelick tallied nine points while Erin Gonzalez added eight. Gonzalez had a team-high 18 points, including three treys, in the loss to Columbia the previous Friday. Soehner scored 16. Garden Spot’s league record fell to 1-7 after a low-scoring 35-23 loss at Cocalico on Wednesday, February 17. Gonzalez led Spot with nine
points, including a pair of treys. Soehner scored six points while Pavelik and Nicole Zeiset each scored four. WRESTLING The Spartan wrestling team finished in a threeway tie for fourth place at the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships, which were held at Manheim Township on Saturday, February 13. Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) Catholic School recently announced that over $162,000 was raised on Nov. 20, 2020, during the Extraordinary Give, the one-day giving event run by the Lancaster County Community Foundation. The grand total raised, including online donations, offline donations, cash prizes, and stretch funds, was over $162,969. Parents, parishioners, alumni, and friends all came together to support The Fund for OMPH School, which provides tuition assistance to families as well as the financial support needed to expand the educational offerings at the school. OMPH School placed 14th out of 522 nonprofits that participated in the Extra Give, with over 470 donors from 14 states choosing to give to OMPH School that day. With the funds raised during the Extra Give, OMPH School is expanding its preschool program for the 2021-22 school year and will offer full-day preschool for 3-year-olds and full-day prekindergarten for 4-year-olds, in addition to the fullday kindergarten already offered. Limited space is available in the preschool programs, and enrollment is open. The financial aid deadline is Monday, March 1, and students must be registered to apply for aid. Readers may contact enrollment@omph.org or 717-7382414 for application information.

Free Tax Prep Service Begins The United Way of Lancaster County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is now scheduling appointments for tax preparation. The Lancaster VITA is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that help people file their taxes every year free of charge. The service is available to anyone who makes $62,000 or less and lives in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at VITA go through at least 40 hours of tax law training and are certified by the IRS. Customers get professional service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. In response to the pandemic, VITA has modified the way it delivers services this year to keep both clients and volunteers safe. VITA now offers a totally contactless, virtual option through a partnership with Get Your Refund. Get Your Refund allows clients to securely upload their tax information and documents. They will receive a call from an IRS-certified tax preparer who will prepare the tax return, review it with them, and send a secure email file with the completed return. There will also be Free File options and limited drop-off appointments at several locations throughout Lancaster County. Virtual and drop-off sites began operating on Jan. 25 to ensure that clients receive their refunds as quickly as possible. To schedule a drop-off appointment at one of VITA’s tax preparation sites around Lancaster County, readers may call the United Way’s 211 referral service. Taxpayers can schedule appointments and obtain information about VITA locations, eligibility requirements, and other details by visiting www.freetaxpreplancaster.org. VITA also offers a free online program that allows taxpayers to file federal and state tax returns at www.myfreetaxes.com.
