Quilting for dollars
BY ANN MEAD ASHInthe cold of February, the women who live in the area surrounding Fairmount in Ephrata gather at the retirement community to create quilts. On Feb. 11, 14, and 15, a total of 192 quilters joined forces to work on 14 framed quilts. Over the three-day period, 11 quilts were completed and three were partly completed before being sent home with some of the quilters for finishing. The quilts will be sold at auction in the fall to benefit Fairmount residents in need.
Many of the quilts were queen size, and Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator and a quilter herself, noted that size is the most common. “There was a great representation of several popular patterns,” said Swailes, who mentioned Trip Around the World, Bargello, Log Cabin, and Kaleidoscope. “(There was) one unnamed quilt in reds and blues that has flying geese, four-patch, and stars included,” she reported. “(There
were also) several quilts with embroidered and cross-stitched patches.” Many of the quilts featured embroidered patterns of flowersand birds. A hunting-themed quilt sported a photo of a family of bears on a background of woodland colors, including greens, browns, and light blues. One cream-colored quilt
was decorated with appliqued hearts, flowers, and leaves in deep greens and reds. Colors ranged from bright reds and pinks to rich cranberries and navy to subdued pastels. Quilting Days attracts many Fairmount residents and local families. Swailes noted that groups of sisters were gathered at several of the tables.
Making recovery work
BY ANN MEAD ASH“What makes us unique is that we pay students to work at the
(Freedom Thrift) store,” said Thomas Carr, director of Revelations of Freedom Ministries (ROFM). ROFM, located at 114 Ranck Church Road,
New Holland, is a faith-based, Christ-centered discipleship program for men who struggle with addictions.
Carr described changes in the student curriculum that were instituted in October 2022, noting that students now begin working at the 30th day after joining the program. “During the first 30 days, students are really monitored,” said Katlyn Leid, clinical coordinator with ROFM. “From day 30 to six months, they have classes in the morning and work in the afternoon in the thrift store or (doing supervised work in the community).” Leid

The goal of Quilting Days is to create quilts to be sold at auction during Fairmount’s annual chicken barbecue in the fall. During 2020, Fairmount streamlined its Sharing Fund benefit by holding chicken barbecue sales off-site and moving the annual auction online. In 2021, many of the activities associated with the event
returned, but the fundraiser was held at New Covenant Mennonite Fellow ship. In 2022, the auction remained at that location, and Swailes said that organizers were pleased with the move. “The new location is working out great,” she said. “There is plenty of room and easy access from Fairmount.”

A fascinating life
BY FRANCINE FULTONEleanor Isaacson’s life experiences have ranged from being abandoned as a toddler by her immediate family and surviving Nazi Germany in World War II to becoming a ballroom dancer, Christian author and motivational speaker.
Isaacson will share the story of her life during a program being presented by Twin Valley Bible Academy on Thursday, March 9, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Twin Valley Bible Chapel. The event is the first in a series being presented by the school as part of a program titled
“America! America, Where Do We Go From Here?”
The evening will begin with a musical prelude by Twin Valley Bible Academy students, followed by a short program about the school, which is open to students in kindergarten through grade 12.
“I will welcome everyone, and we will have a video about the school and then introduce Eleanor,” said Academy principal Nate Mellinger, who noted that Isaacson is a family friend of his parents, Steve and Jennifer Mellinger, who are in charge of marketing and development for the school, respectively.

Jennifer explained that when Isaacson was a toddler, she and her family resided in the United States, but they returned to Germany to visit relatives there. “Her parents went back to Germany to visit family, and they left her there at the age of 2 with her grandparents,” Jennifer said. “Soon after, the war broke out and her grandparents were not able to care for her, so they gave her to an aunt (and her husband). (Isaacson) would cross over enemy lines at night to get food. She has quite a story.”
Isaacson credits her survival to an “Individual Presence,” which is the title of one of her books. “She didn’t know who God was. She had never been taught, but she had this sense that there was someone bigger than herself watching out for her,” Jennifer said.
“Her stories are both humorous and serious, (and) she will also have a Q and A,”
Steve said, adding that Isaacson will have visual displays on March 9 featuring photos and memorabilia from Germany.
In addition to offering an interesting presentation to the community, the goal of the evening is to make the community more aware of Twin Valley Bible Academy and what it offers for students. “What we are trying to do is let the community know about what we are doing here.
We are different than a traditional school,” said Nate.
The school implements The Principle Approach, which is a Christian method of teaching every school subject. “The thing that sets us apart is that our subjects are taught from the principle of God’s words,” Nate explained. “We have a specific Bible class, but the Word of God is brought into every class. In math class, for example, we (share) the biblical basis of math and we highlight some Christian mathe-
maticians. Everything has a biblically reasoning basis.”

Not easily broken
Dayspring Christian Academy’s Remember America Speaker Series team makes decisions based in prayer and with reverence to Scripture. The choice of three speakers for this year’s event is rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:12, which reads in part, “A three-ply cord is not easily broken.”
“Our team started thinking about how our school is in partnership with parents and churches in educating our children,” said Lisa Becker, events manager with Dayspring, which is located in Mountville. That three-strand cord of family, church, and education became the basis for this year’s banquet, with a speaker chosen to represent each of the three strands.
The 2023 Remember America Speaker Series banquet will be held at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29. The featured speakers will be author and Fox News host
Pete Hegseth, speaking on education; actor Kirk Cameron, speaking on family; and worship leader Sean Feucht, speaking on the role of the church.
Hegseth came to the attention of the Dayspring team when a school staff member read his book “Battle for the American Mind: Uprooting a Century of Miseducation.”
Dayspring headmaster Dan Stone explained that the first community schools in America were instituted for the pur-

pose of teaching children to read in order that they might learn from the Word of God.
“In a Christian society … the community schools taught Christian values,” said Stone, who added that changes in education began to occur in the 20th century. Hegseth’s book outlines those changes and proposes classical Christian education as a remedy.
“As a Principle Approach school, there are elements of classical education (at Dayspring),” noted Stone.
Cameron is well-known for his part in the sitcom “Growing Pains” and for several family-focused films. Most recently, Cameron’s “American Campfire Revival” has encouraged the family of faith to embrace principles that may bring blessing to America.
Feucht is a worship leader, author, and missionary.
“When it comes to the church, few voices have been as loud in calling God’s people to engage the culture and redeem it for Christ,” said Stone.
“It all ties together,” said Becker of the three speakers.
“The mission of the Remember America Speaker Series is to remind Americans of their unique heritage of liberty that was founded upon biblical principles. We felt that a three-strand cord is one we wanted to illuminate … to bring people together.”
Dayspring senior Caroline Hostetter of Pequea Township will also present her winning oratory, “America: A Legacy of

Time management tips for students
Many people have great demands on their time, so it is a good idea to develop strategies for managing time effectively. It can be especially important for students to improve their time management skills early in their academic careers. They may consider using the following strategies.
It is important to establish a daily schedule. Staying the course may require guidelines detailing how one will spend his or her time. A large portion of the day may be taken up by classes and assignments, but students should also plan the other parts of the day. Specific times should be blocked off for exercise, meals, school, study, and any other responsibilities. Students may consider using time blocking, a technique in which one organizes his or her activities by the hour or
another set amount of time.
Another strategy is to figure out where time is being lost. People need to know how they are currently spending their time before they can improve their time management skills. Making a time log over the course of a few days may help to determine if a person is working efficiently.
Time for breaks should be included in order to avoid burnout. Breaks allow students to socialize, rest or engage in other activities unrelated to school. According to sleep researcher Nathaniel Kleitman, people’s minds naturally crave breaks after 90 minutes of intense work. Each individual may need breaks at different intervals. People should learn to read their body’s cues.
Many students avoid projects that seem like huge tasks. Breaking
down a larger job into smaller ones can help students stay focused and measure their progress. For example, if a student needs to write a 50page research paper, he or she might first find and read source material, then select facts and quotes to incorporate into the paper, and then resolve to write a set number of pages per day.
Scheduling classes wisely is another strategy. Some people are night owls while others thrive in the morning, so students should try to schedule their classes at a time when are usually very productive. This strategy may not be possible for high school students, but college students may have more flexibility in scheduling.
Time management is an important skill for students to develop. It can help in the classroom and later when entering the workforce.

Weaver, Hurst and Musser take silver at sectionals
BY ARA GRIGORIANThere are three seniors on the Garden Spot wrestling team whose stories cannot yet be written because their high school wrestling careers are continuing.
Blake Weaver, Tyler Hurst and Mason Musser all finished second in their respective weight classes at the District Three Section 1 AAA tournament, which was held at Governor Mifflin on Saturday, February 18.
They each earned a spot in the South Central AAA Regionals for February 24-25 at Spring Grove.
Musser, who made it to the championship bout of the 285-pound weight class, pinned his first two opponents - Jayvian Morales of Reading and Hunter Unger of Gov. Mifflin.
“He faced off against Unger, the number three seed,” Adam Bunting, the Spartans’ coach, pointed out. “Unger jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the second and was leading 4-2 at the start of the third.
“Mason picked up a big takedown to go up 6-4,” Bunting continued. “After Unger reversed to even the score, Musser reversed Unger to his back for a fall with 50 seconds left in the match.”
Musser’s championship match opponent was Twin
Valley’s Ean Winchester. The Spartan senior was unable to claim another victory as Winchester earned a pin with 20 seconds left in the second period.
“Winchester is ranked number nine in the state,” Bunting explained. “He proved to be too much.”
Hurst opened his quest for the 215 title by posting a pin. He followed with a formidable foe - Tuckerr Bellanca of Muhlenberg.
“He’s faced off against the second seed and 10th-ranked wrestler in the state,” Bunting said of Bellanca. “Tyler picked up a big takedown near the end of the first period and then was able to keep Bellanca down and scoreless for the entire second period.
“He weathered a final turn attempt by Bellanca to hold and win 5-2,” Bunting continued. “It was a big confidence-building, signature win for Tyler Hurst - the kind he’ll need to replicate if he wants to make the state tournament.”
Hurst faced Ryan McMillan of Wilson in the title bout. McMillan is a returning state qualifier currently ranked ninth in the state.
“Tyler was holding his own going into the second period with the match tied at 0-0,” said Bunting. “But he surrendered a big reversal to his back, which quickly made it 5-
0 and changed the trajectory of the match.”
McMillan came away with a 13-3 major decision.
While Hurst entered the tournament as the number three seed in the 215’s, Weaver came in at number two in the 189 pound bracket. Weaver demonstrated that dominance with an 18-5 major decision, dispensing with Drew Koller of Wilson.
“He cruised to a victory then wrestled Sam McCracker of Ephrata - the number three seed,” Bunting said.
The battle between the second and third seeds was a close one with Weaver griding out a 3-2 win. It was an opponent Weaver had faced earlier in a LancasterLebanon League regular-season match.
“Blake had beaten him 5-1 way back in December in our dual meet with Ephrata,” Bunting recalled. “This match was a little closer as Blake led 1-0 going into the third period.
“He surrendered a reversal but then quickly reversed McCracken,” continued the coach. “He held him down for the remaining 45 seconds of the match.”
As is usually the case when one advances through the brackets, one faces tougher and more talented opponents. In Weaver’s case, there was no exception to this reality. And that opponent was Tucker Hogan of Daniel Boone.
“In the finals, Blake faced Tucker Hogan, returning state bronze medalist,” said Bunting. “He is currently ranked number two in the state. Blake gave it his best effort but was overmatched in this one.”
Hogan finished on top with a 17-2 technical fall.
“The semifinals was a thrilling 30 minutes for us with Weaver, Musser and Hurst each winning tough close matches in clutch fashion to punch their tickets to the finals and return trips to district championships,” Bunting added.
Though unable to
reach the finals, senior Josiah Smucker went 2-3 on the day with both losses coming at the hands of Cocalico wrestler Wyatt Fritz. Smucker finished sixth in the 133-pound class.
“Josiah has been a leader and an example of great work ethic in our program for the past four years,” Bunting commented. “He was actually leading 2-0 heading into the third period of his second match against Fritz. He then was caught in a headlock for five points that totally flipped the momentum of the match. He lost a tough, hard-fought 5-2 match.”
Smucker’s great work ethic was evident in how he bounced back from a 7-0 first-round loss to Fritz. In the consolation rounds, he registered a firstperiod pin over Conestoga Valley’s Bryce Bowman followed by an intensely close 6-4 victory over Ayden Elzalada of Daniel Boone.
Bryant Kranwinkel of Muhlenberg pinned Smucker in the third period of the consolation semis, setting up a rematch with Fritz in
the fifth-place bout.
On the day, the team tally was 73 points for Garden Spot. The Spartans finished 10th in the team standings.
In addition to McMillan’s gold medal at 215, the Wilson Bulldogs had two more first-
place finishers and a secondplace finish, compiling 158 points - the top team total. Cocalico took second at 147. And with 142.5 points, including two gold medals, Daniel Boone was a close third.

Forest Farming program planned
Penn State Extension will livestream a program in the Forest Farming Series on Thursday, March 30, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. via Zoom. Forest farming is the production of non-timber forest products in forests to produce edible and medicinal crops for personal use and income.
Titled “Ramps/Wild Leeks,” the upcoming program will provide information on the identification, biology, ecology, uses, and importance of the edible plant Allium tricoccum, also known as the ramp or wild leek. Viewers will also learn about wild population stewardship and forest farming approaches, as well as research updates and educational opportunities. The webinar is designed for forest landowners, recreational and commercial foragers, foraged plant consumers, natural resource agency personnel, foresters, land managers, and gardeners.
There is no cost to attend, but registration is required to receive the webinar link. For details and registration, visit www.extension.psu.edu and search for “Forest Farming Series: Ramps/Wild Leeks.” Registrants will also receive access to the webinar recording.
