Kirk Wolfe, pastor at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, teaches karate for several reasons, but one stands out. “The children are my favorite (students) because they think they can’t break a board,” said Wolfe. “They just need to be trained … and when they break a board, you should see their faces … and their confidence goes sky high. That is really fun to watch.” Wolfe and his assistant, Japanese exchange student Natsuki Tsuruyama, will present martial arts techniques at a free demonstration to be held at Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church, 5971 Division Highway, Narvon,
on Saturday, March 9, beginning at 4 p.m. The event will include 40 minutes of demonstration, followed by a 20minute question-and-answer period. Area residents of all ages are welcome. “We will be demonstrating all the things the students will be able to learn to do as they progress through their belt ranks,” explained Wolfe, who added that Okinawan karate, which includes the weapons; Korean taekwondo; kendo, which involves a sword; jiu-jitsu; and judo will all be demonstrated. Tsuruyama will demonstrate kendo and jiu-itsu, and Wolfe and some of his students will break boards. “Breaking teaches focus to be able to hit a specific spot, and it shows power,” said Wolfe. Myers asserted that Bream and Gowdy have “strong Christian testimonies.” Attendees will be invited to submit questions for a question-and-answer session that will take place after the speakers’ presentations. Myers will serve as the facilitator, and Dayspring alumni Carley Evangelista Bilindabagabo, Class of 2009, and Matthew Valverde, Class of 2012, will assist in the dialogue. “It’s important to show what Dayspring is about,” said Lisa Becker, the school’s marketing director. “Including alumni will show how they have learned to think and reason.” Current students will also be part of the program. The choir will sing several selections, and during one song, the vocal group will be joined by alumna and soloist Julie Stone. Additionally, junior Joey Engle will deliver an oration, which he composed last year for a school competition. “My oration is (on the topic
that) capitalism is the best economic system; it rewards individualism,” Joey said. “I’m pretty nervous (about speaking to a large group of people). Why wouldn’t I be? This is God’s plan, (however). I’m delivering God’s message.” The doors to the venue will open at 5:30 p.m., and the event will start at 6 p.m. Two sets of tickets are available for purchase. One set includes dinner, and the other does not. Tickets must be purchased in advance at www.dayspring christian.com or by calling the school at 717-285-2000. Myers noted that there will be an opportunity for attendees to invest in the future of Dayspring at the event, but the Remember America Speaker Series is not primarily a fundraiser. “It’s an extension of our mission,” Myers explained. “It’s an opportunity for us to speak into the community about the importance of the biblical foundation of our nation.”

Martial Arts from pg 1 Wolfe added that the weapons that will be demonstrated will include the bo staff and the sai, which is like a large fork. “Most people are familiar with these weapons (because) the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ (characters) use them,” Wolfe said. In addition, Wolfe will demonstrate open-hand forms. “These are a series of movements like a dance, (and) you can use the dance to defend yourself,” he said, noting that engaging in combat is not necessary for those who learn the discipline. “A lot of people look at the sport and think, ‘I will have to fight,’ but in Okinawa, they teach forms that are like a dance in elementary schools as part of their heritage. There’s a rhythm, but (each series includes) other kinds of (karate) movements, instead of just dance movements.” Wolfe, who is originally from Lititz, honed his skills in karate when he was stationed in Okinawa in the Air Force from 1990 to 1993. “We were homeschooling and looking for a gym for (our daughters),” explained Wolfe, who found Master Chotoku Makabe at the United Services Organization (USO). “I studied with him and enjoyed it, and I went to second-degree black belt in Okinawa,” said Wolfe, who has taught in the U.S. and taken part in demonstrations in Australia and Mexico. “I go back to Okinawa and continue testing, and I take students there to experience what it is like to be there at the roots of the (sport).” Wolfe’s other credits include serving as martial arts director for a Manheim sports complex and winning gold, silver, and bronze medals in the Oklahoma State Games and Pennsylvania’s Keystone Games. He was also a silver medalist at the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU) national event, where he represented Oklahoma. As a teacher at the U.S. Air Force Security Police Academy, he taught physical apprehension and restraint techniques, and he currently serves as a police officer with the Quarryville police department and as a negotiator for the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. He teaches martial arts lessons with the Police Athletic League in Lancaster city, and he was an adjunct taekwondo instructor for Rose State College on Oklahoma City. Following the demonstration, Wolfe plans to hold yearround weekly free classes at the church on Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m., beginning on March 17. Classes will be divided based on interest. Interested individuals may sign up following the demonstration or register by calling the church at 717-354-8459.

Getting Ready For Warmer Weather: Early Spring Landscaping Tips As winter tapers off, people may be antsy to spend more time outdoors in the increasingly warm weather. For those with green thumbs, outdoor plans may involve tending to the garden and preparing other components of their landscapes. Homeowners may draw inspiration from budding crocuses and daffodils pushing through the last remnants of snow and employ the following tips to prepare for the upcoming gardening season: ¡ One of the first steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and it may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. ¡ While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it is better to know the last of the possible frost dates; otherwise,
homeowners may waste time and money planting flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped by another frosty day. To check frost dates, homeowners should refer to The Farmer’s Almanac. ¡ Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency - just crumbling when lifted. Soil that is too muddy after the spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on. Gardeners should speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments can be added to the soil to enrich it. ¡ Fill in bare patches of lawn soon by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to a bare area, water it, and continue to care for the area until the spot fills in. ¡ Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed. ¡ Give outdoor entertaining
spaces a good scrubbing, clearing away dirt and grime that may have accumulated over the winter. Use a broom and a leaf blower to remove any leftover leaves. ¡ Check if the front porch, railings, or decking need painting and/or staining. Tackle these projects when the weather is cooler so everything will be ready for those peak spring days. If hiring a professional, it is good to get on their schedule now to ensure the project is finished by the onset of nice
weather. ¡ Think about what annuals to plant in the landscape this year that will complement any existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that the entire yard is cohesive. Before homeowners know it, winter is gone and it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Getting a jump start on spring lawn prep can ensure that homeowners can take full advantage of nice spring days.

A recent visual networking index forecast from Cisco predicts that by 2021, there will be four networked devices and connections per person across the globe. Those figures are even greater in North America, where Cisco estimates each person will have 13 networked devices and connections by 2021. With all those devices, it is no surprise that a greater number of people are embracing the smart home movement. Those who are considering converting their homes can benefit from learning more about smart homes and their advantages.

In fact, the CNET and Coldwell Banker survey found 45 percent of Americans say that smart home products save them an average of about $98 each month. ¡ I n v e s t m e n t : Whether people are developers or single-family homeowners, real estate is an investment. Making a home as appealing to prospective buyers as possible is a great way to get a better return on a real estate investment. The CNET and Coldwell Banker survey found that 81 percent of buyers would be more likely to buy a home if smart home products were already installed. That can make the market for a home more competitive, ultimately earning the owner more money at resale.
What is a smart home? According to SmartHomeUSA.com, the term “smart homeâ€? is commonly used to define residences in which appliances, lighting, heating and cooling units, televisions, computers, entertainment systems, Smart homes are both the present and and security systems are capable of communicating with one another. Hub The hub refers to software or hardware that connects all of the devices and gets them to work together. Homeowners often have various devices made by different manufacturers; while it might seem difficult to enable those devices to work together, a hub does that work instead. And because they can be connected to a smartphone, hubs also make it possible to control devices while people are away from home. WiFi Router Some people rent their routers from their internet/cable providers, while others buy their own routers. Regardless, homeowners are going to need a good WiFi router to get their smart home up and running. They should determine which type of WiFi their home currently has and then find a router that is compatible with that WiFi. They should request a list of routers that are compatible with their WiFi from their service provider, as not all routers will necessarily work with that internet connection. If possible, they should upgrade to the fastest WiFi their internet provider offers, as that will make the smart home that much more enjoyable and frustration-free. Devices Homeowners will not necessarily need to upgrade their devices to get a smart home. In fact, homeowners who do control or can control any device in their home with a smartphone are already on their way to having a smart home. One upgrade may be to purchase a programmable thermostat that is compatible with a smartphone; this might be beneficial if the home’s current thermostat is old and not internet-compatible. With a programmable thermostat, people can control the temperature in their home remotely.

Kitchen Remodel Must-Haves Kitchen remodels are among the most popular home renovation projects, whether they consist of swapping out cabinet hardware or doing major demolition. When investing in a kitchen project, homeowners should consider incorporating the following items: · Deep, double sinks: Having a double sink enables people to soak dishes in one side and then wash on the other. It also makes it easier to wash and prep produce for meals. · Kitchen island and bar stools: Even though many meals are enjoyed around the table, there is something to be said for the convenience of a kitchen island and some well-placed bar stools for quick breakfasts or snacks. · Smart kitchen storage: Work with a contractor to have storage solutions built into cabinetry and the pantry. Slide-out shelving, nooks for paper towel rolls, and custom-designed areas to store stand mixers and other necessities can make kitchens more functional.
R030003
Enhancing A Yard With Hardscaping
· Outdoor access: If possible, design a kitchen so it is easy to access the backyard via sliding doors. This can make outdoor entertaining or even coffee on the deck much easier. · Under-cabinet lighting: Fixtures installed under cabinets provide both ambient lighting and task lighting. This type of lighting makes it easier for people to see what they are working on, as even well-placed overhead lighting can fail to illuminate dark corners and spots on the counters. · Convenient warming drawer: This appliance, which provides backup to the oven, is a slide-out drawer that can keep prepared foods out of the way and warm until they are served. It is particularly handy for holidays and other times when homeowners entertain. · Beverage station: Designate one area of the kitchen for beverages, such as coffee and tea. This can limit traffic in the kitchen to a single area when homeowners host gatherings.
Curb appeal is beneficial in various ways. It can make a home more attractive to prospective buyers and give existing homeowners a place they want to come home to. In its study of the worth of outdoor remodeling projects, the National Association of Realtors found that standard lawn care and overall landscape upgrades were most appealing to buyers, as well as the most likely to add value to a home. Although plants, grass, and other items can improve curb appeal, homeowners should not overlook hardscaping. Hardscaping is an industry term that refers to the nonliving features of a landscape. These features can include everything from decks to walkways to ornamental boulders. Introducing paths or paver walls to a property helps develop that home’s hardscape. Hardscape and soft elements often work in concert to create inspiring landscape designs.
DIY landscape designers can heed certain tips to add to the hardscape features on their properties or enhance the ones already in existence. C h o o s e m a t e r i a l s . As with many landscaping projects, homeowners must first determine what types of additions they would like on their properties. Common hardscape features include patios, decks, and walkways made of pavers or bricks, as well as retaining walls. Hardscape elements can be functional or simply decorative features that add whimsy to the yard. C h o o s e a t h e m e . The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an Eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the
overall appeal. Professionals suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work cannot be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project will be cohesive. Think about the purpose. Hardscaping can look good but also serve key purposes. Pebbles or gravel can mitigate trouble areas that do not grow grass or plant life well. Retaining walls hold back soil in yards that have sharply inclined hills. Mulch can set perimeters around trees and shrubs, as well as planting beds.
Fencing, another form of hardscaping, is essential for establishing property boundaries and adding privacy. Consult a professional. While many hardscaping additions can be handled by novices, largescale projects, such as patios and decking, can change the grading of the yard. Professionals can map out how to handle drainage issues and meet building codes. In addition, professional installation can ensure that hardscaping features last for years to come.

The Gen. John H. Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will meet at noon on Wednesday, March 13, in the Eagle Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The speaker will be Harvey Scolnick, a retired FAA air traffic controller with more than 50 years of experience. Membership in the KWVA is open to all servicemen and
members attend a full day of education about addiction, self-care, and family issues. Many people struggle to understand addiction and how it changes their loved one’s behavior. The family retreats will provide access to education and resources that can help families better support and assist their loved ones, while also teaching self-care tactics to keep the family unit healthy. The Bridges Poverty Task Force aims to support the health and the ability of individuals to withstand challenges, such as poverty. With their grant, they will host collaboration meetings within the community to address the needs and barriers of those experiencing poverty or other social problems. The meetings will help build awareness of the Bridges Task Force, build community, and provide access to resources to those unable to find help or unaware that help exists. The organization will also host monthly dinners during which providers and parents will be invited to share and collaborate around needs and resources. Compass Mark’s mission is to prevent addiction through education, skill-building, and community mobilization. The nonprofit serves Lancaster and Lebanon counties and seeks to guide and empower all people toward healthy, fulfilling lives free from addiction. To expand the reach and impact of high-quality drug and alcohol abuse prevention services, Compass Mark supports local coalitions that are doing prevention work in the community. This year, Compass Mark received funds from the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission to award several minigrants to projects. Compass Mark recently announced it awarded more than $26,000 in mini-grants to four Lancaster County coalitions for prevention projects that will be implemented between now and June. Grant recipients include Ephrata Cares, Lancaster County Recovery Alliance (LCRA), Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA), and The Bridges Poverty Task Force. The Ephrata Public Library, Ephrata Cares, and the Northern Lancaster HUB will design, facilitate, and staff a 21-week character education after-school program for tweens and teenagers in the Ephrata community. Designed around 12 values to strengthen and increase community protective factors against substance abuse and addiction, the after-school program, called “Character Matters,” will take place at the Ephrata Public Library. The library will also provide reading materials for families and teenagers to educate themselves about substance abuse and addiction. LCRA will introduce the Media Education Project (MEP), which focuses on sharing evidence-based education as well as prevention strategies with the media, so that they can maximize their role as leaders in this community health issue. The primary focus will be on the use of language and attitude as well as the depiction of those affected by addiction in the media. The LCRA MEP team will meet with representatives from local media outlets, comprising print, radio, digital, and television, to educate them face-to-face about the disease of addiction and language and image standards. Spartans Finish Eighth in District Three Playoffs by Ara Grigorian
Garden Spot faced Elizabethtown on the road Tuesday night in a District Three Class 5A consolation semifinal game. The Bears, on the strength of a dominant third quarter, downed the Spartans 63-46 and moved on to the fifth-place match for the district. Both Elizabethtown and Garden Spot went to 16-11 on the year with the result of Tuesday’s game. Garden Spot rallied in the second quarter and went into intermission leading by a point, 32-31. The Bears’ 15-4 run in the third and the momentum which carried into the fourth doomed Spot. Bears’ Brody Beach led all scorers with 15 points. Garden Spot’s Andrew Zentner led his team with 14 points. Keontae Nunn poured in 12 points and John Dykie added five. The Spartans, who entered districts as the 12th-ranked team, upset New Oxford in the opening round on February 18. The loss to fourth-ranked Northern York three days later relegated them to the consolation games. The loss to E-town did not end the season for Garden Spot; it sent the team to battle for seventh place in the district against Northeastern. The Spartans came up short against Northeastern despite a 16-point performance by Nunn. He sank a pair of three-point field goals and went 4-for-4 at the foul line in the 56-38 loss. The Spartans (16-12) actually led going into the second quarter. Northeastern doubled up Garden Spot 24-12 to Photo by Bob Diller take a 32-24 halftime lead. WRESTLING At the District Three Class-AAA championships, which were held on Friday and Saturday, February 22-23 in Hershey, the Spartans’ Joshua Groff finished fourth in the 126-pound weight class. Meanwhile, Dustin Swanson, who wrestled in the 220-pound bracket and Garrett Gehr (120) finished sixth in their weight classes. Groff earned a 6-2 decision over Shippensburg’s Dylan Ramsey in the opening round and posted an 8-3 victory against Dallastown rival Cael Trumbull, advancing to the semis. Groff’s loss to J.J. Wilson of Cedar Cliff sent him to the consolation semis where he got past Ramsey again, this time with a closer margin of 4-3. In the third-place match, Cole Grove of Chambersburg registered a major decision, having Groff settle for fourth place. New Student Loan Program Posted Prospective college students who may be applying for financial aid this year are encouraged to consider the new PA Forward Student Loan Program. The PA Forward State Grant Program provides low-cost, alternative student loans for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as loans for parent borrowers. The program is designed to complement other forms of student aid, such as the PA State Grant Program and low-cost federal loans. Pennsylvania students who need help paying for college after exhausting their eligibility for gift aid and low-cost federal student loans are encouraged to apply. Additionally, borrowers who are in repayment and want to combine their debt after graduation to outstanding student debts and achieve a lower monthly payment can benefit from a PA Forward Refinance Loan. PHEAA is the lender and servicer of the loans, with taxexempt financing provided by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. PA Forward participants can borrow up to the total cost of attendance with competitively low interest rates. There are immediate credit approvals and flexible repayment options, with no application or origination fees. Borrowers can get discounted interest rates by enrolling in an automatic direct debit repayment program and simply by graduating. Borrowers can receive a .25 percent interest rate reduction for enrolling in an automatic direct debit program and an additional .50 percent interest rate reduction for achieving successful graduation. Borrowers also benefit from a six-month grace period after graduation before the first payment is due. This allows borrowers time to get their finances in order, including time to find a job, before repayment begins. Borrowers who take full advantage of the program’s benefits could save thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. PHEAA encourages students and their families to exhaust all eligibility for grants and scholarships before considering a student loan. When borrowing is necessary, students should first apply for low-cost federal student loans before turning to an alternative student loan, which may have higher interest rates. To help students make informed choices about their higher education funding plans that can prevent unnecessary or excessive borrowing, PHEAA created www.mysmartborrowing.org. This free resource helps users understand how different career, school, and financial decisions made during the college planning process can influence their total cost of an education and their ability to repay any student loans after graduation.
