Exploring The Old Route 30 BY ANN MEAD ASH
he New Holland Area Historical Society invites local residents to take a trip through Lancaster on the Old Lincoln Highway (Route 30) via a presentation by Benton Webber of Manheim Township, who has sleuthed out the original locations of 40 concrete marker posts placed along the Lincoln Highway where it traveled through Lancaster in 1928. Webber will give his presentation in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV), 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, on Thursday, March 17, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but attendees will be required to wear masks. Webber embarked on a journey to find the present-day whereabouts of all 40 of the marker posts after obtaining a copy of the 1928 list describing the original location of each marker. He also found an updated list from 1960 that noted that 22 had remained in their original locations that time. “There is one
T
today in its original position,” said Webber, who noted that the post is at Third and Chestnut streets in Columbia. Webber visited the post and took measurements, and he had a portable replica built. In September 2021, he began taking the replica to the original locations as he found them and posting photos from each excursion on Facebook. He plans to complete the project with a Facebook post on May 28. The markers were put up on a single day in September 1928 by Lancaster Boy Scouts. A representative of the Lincoln Highway Association, an organization founded in 1915 that was dedicated to making public improvements, selected the locations for the posts. “They were trying to figure out how to connect different points,” noted Webber, who added that in Pennsylvania many roads were gravel, well-graded, and traveled regularly. “The Lincoln Highway stretched from New York to San Francisco, and it was the nation’s first transcontinental highway,” he said.

Leanne and Patrick Buckner started Unashamed Ministries in early 2021.
By 2020, Patrick was an associate pastor at the nondenominational Colerain Church, located at 1923 Noble Road, Kirkwood. That is when he met Leanne Quartuccio, originally of New Holland. Patrick and Leanne married in August of 2021, but the February prior to that, they launched Unashamed Ministries together as an outreach, beginning with the collection and delivery of Valentine’s Day cards to residents of the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community (QPRC). Now living in Lititz, the couple has continued with regular outreaches. “We had a vision to go out and be the hands and feet of Jesus to just help people,” explained Leanne. “We choose a different outreach every month in the local community.” Following the Valentine’s Day effort, the couple collected toys for the children’s ward of Lancaster General Hospital. The toys were available to children in the hospital on Easter morning in 2021. The couple heard from a mother whose daughter was admitted the night before. “(The little girl) was worried that the Easter Bunny wasn’t going to find her,” said Leanne. “(The mother) messaged us and said her daughter woke up with an Easter gift and that meant the world to her,” added Patrick. In April 2021, the ministry collected essential items for Water Street Mission, and in May it created gift bags to help encourage women who are clients of Clare House. Over the summer, care packages were prepared for new patients of the WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center, and in October, art supplies were collected for women being served by North Star Initiative. In addition, local artist Paris Llanso visited and taught an art class. Prior to Christmas 2021, the Buckners offered donors an opportunity to purchase bags of Christmas items, including devotionals and Patrick’s CD. The donors picked up the bags at an event held at Colerain Church. The gathering included a reception with food, games, and Christmas music.
“We opened it up to the whole community,” said Patrick. The donors filled out invitations to include with the bags that asked the recipient to attend church with them. Since the arrival of 2022, the couple has collected hats, gloves, and scarves for those in need in the city of Lancaster and repeated the Valentine’s Day card effort for QPRC, but added Friendship Community to the recipients. The Buckers are also organizing an Easter toy drive for children at Penn State Hershey Medical Center through Thursday, March 31. “We are hoping to expand (the ministry),” said Leanne. “I want to always do more to reach out and proclaim the good news.” Patrick agreed. “We are bringing Jesus to the world,” he said. More information about the ministry may be found at www.unashamedministriespa.com. Readers who have questions or who would like information about dropping off donations for the toy drive may email unashamedministries pa@gmail.com or call 717-8476447 or 856-803-3517.

Researching the original locations presented challenges because of the changes in road names, locations, and landmarks. “Some were easy, but most were not,” said Webber, who said that finding the southeast corner of Hamilton Watch Factory was pretty easy, but that determining one location in Columbia was not. “The one that vexed me the most was opposite Home of a Million Parks,” he said, adding that the problem was a typo. “It was really Home of a Million Parts, which was a junkyard near Columbia.” Webber has worked with municipal officials, historians, and preservationists in his research. Webber’s work on the project is part of his goal to pre-
serve Lancaster history. “I have been interested in telling and understanding the story of Lancaster,” he said. “One of the ways to tell it is how our roads connect us and help us to reimagine how things have changed in just a century and how much they can change … how they reflect the times and what we do.” More information about the Route 30 marker project may be found by searching for “Benton Webber” on Facebook. Garrett Gehr battled to a thirdplace finish in the 132-pound weight class of the Class 3A District Three/South Central Regional championships Saturday, February 26, at Spring Grove High School. Gehr and five Garden Spot teammates competed at the districts with Gehr earning a spot at the PIAA Class 3A state championships. “Four of our guys who made it through to districts were underclassmen,” Adam Bunting, the Garden Spot head coach, pointed out. “It was quite an accomplishment for them to make it to districts. It was great to get the experience and to work to get back there next year.” Gehr, a senior, was a state qualifier last year as well. Wrestling through the brackets on Saturday, Gehr ended up facing Jared Fulton

of Solanco twice - once in the second round and again in the thirdplace match. “He wrestled well in his first two matches - technical fall and then beating a pretty tough kid from Solanco,” said Bunting. “He pretty much controlled the match.” Gehr had a 16-1 technical fall over Tyler Bootier of Red Lion before defeating Fulton 8-4. In the next match, he suffered a 7-5 overtime loss to a very tough opponent in Ivan Vega of Spring Grove. Vega came into the district tournament with a 24-2 record and having won the 132-weight class at his sectionals tournament the previous week. “He got a takedown in the middle of the second period and went up 3-2 with about a minute left,” Bunting said of the Vega match. “He then got called for an illegal hold, so it became 3-3. “So, with 50 seconds left, we let him go on purpose and he got down 4-3,” continued the coach. “Garrett got a takedown and was leading 5-4 with about five seconds left. The other kid spun away with one second left to tie it. “In overtime, the other kid got a quick takedown,” Bunting concluded. “If they wrestled multiple times, Garrett would probably win the majority of the matches.” In the consolation semifinals, Gehr earned a 5-1 decision over Bodie Rouzer of Waynesboro, setting up the third-place match with Fulton. “He came back right away for a match in the consolation semifinals,” Bunting said. “He was able to win that and finished with the same Solanco kid to finish in third place.

Just an all-around good kid.” Schilling battled all year, returning from a surgery prior to the season getting underway. “He came back and helped the team win the section title - we were co-champs with Elizabethtown,” said Bunting. “Jeremy wrestled in some close matches for us.” Mason Musser wrestled in the 285-pound class and lost 11-4 in the opening bout, facing Avery Kuhns of Chambersburg. In the consolations, Caleb Mussmon of Hempfield notched a pin to end Musser’s run for a medal. “He wrestled the kid from Chambersburg tough and got the first takedown,” Bunting noted. “He was up 2-1. He won 7-3. When Garrett starts out fast, he often does very well. “Though he had his eyes on the finals and had that pulled away from him in the final seconds of the semifinals, we had a conversation with him that the goal is to earn a medal at states,” Bunting added. “Last year he won three straight after losing in the quarterfinals and finished third.” Jeremy Schilling suffered a firstround pin but bounced back for a third-period pin in his first consolation match, defeating Thaddeus Krebs of Central Dauphin East. In the next round, however, Schilling lost a tough 10-6 decision to Kyle Deisley of Red Lion. “He had a couple of tough matches in districts, but battled to the very end,” Bunting commented. “It was good for him to end his career on a high note- making it to districts. “He has been on varsity since he was a freshman,” added the coach. “He has been a good leader for the team - good for team morale. He brings a lot of intangibles that help the team. He adds value even when

“He is a great athlete and very coachable,” added Bunting. “He is only in his third year of wrestling.” Just like Weaver, teammate Tyler Hurst also played football for the Spartans. “Tyler took big strides forward this year,” said Bunting. “He and Blake both play multiple sports. “Sometimes it’s the luck of the draw in the post-season consolations,” continued Bunting. “There were some guys in the brackets that he could have beaten. He faced a kid who was a league finalist.” Diego Portales at 126, Blake Weaver at 172 and Tyler Hurst at 215 were unable to register any wins. Portales opened against Hempfield sophomore Seamus Mack and lost on a fall. Mack went on to take third in the tournament and qualified for states. “In the consolations, he got injured facing the kid who ended up taking sixth,” Bunting said Weaver lost a close 3-1 decision in the consolations, facing John Gleason of Shippensburg. He was coming off a first-round loss to Tyler Withers of Gettysburg. “Blake battled in the match but lost,” Bunting said. “He was nursing a shoulder injury from practice this past week.
