Triple Play - GOTR Plans Multiple Activities By Ann Mead Ash

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon is living up to its name with a busy spring schedule, which is keeping organizers on the run. GOTR will launch its spring season on Monday, March 16; the organization will hold a scholarship fundraising banquet on Friday, April 17; and the first GOTR summer camp program will be held from Monday, June 22, to Friday, June 26. This year’s season will include 100 teams in school districts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties using two different curriculums. The program, designed for girls ages 8 to 14, will teach about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals. The organization offers two curricula: GOTR, for girls in grades three through five, and Heart and Sole, designed for girls in

sixth through eighth grades. Heart and Sole is facilitated by coaches, but led by the team members. The curriculum includes both discussion and journaling with a goal of giving girls the tools they need to navigate middle school and be successful in high school. “We are excited that in our 11th year in Lancaster and Lebanon, we have our biggest Heart and Sole season to date coming up,” said Jennifer West, who serves as program director for the organization. Girls who wish to take part in GOTR or Heart and Sole may visit www.gotr lancaster.org for more information. Readers who have questions about the program may contact West at jennifer.west@girlsontherun.org. GOTR’s Kickin’ Up Kindness banquet will be held on Friday, April 17, at Brick Gables, 800 E. Newport Road, Lititz, See GOTR pg 4

For The Good Of The Team ... And The Community By Ann Mead Ash

On a crisp Saturday morning at the end of January, more than 20 Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) volunteers and a few members of area emergency medical services (EMS) companies met in the training room at the GSFR station, located at 339 E. Main St., New Holland. The room smelled strongly of coffee as the volunteers filed in to take their seats. Jayne Miller, WellSpan Philhaven mental health community education coordinator, introduced herself See GSFR pg 10

for the competition. “They pick their own projects, noted club adviser Larry Everhart, CCS technology instructor. CCS students chose projects such as creating carbon dioxide-powered pinewood race cars for the Dragster Design category. “On the cars, there is a cartridge with a little container of carbon dioxide under a lot of pressure. When they race, there is a device that punctures the seal of the cartridge so the carbon dioxide escapes, and it propels the dragster forward at speeds up to 60 miles per hour, explained Everhart, noting that the cars compete on a raised track. “There is track that is 4 feet off the ground and about 100 feet long. There are two eyelets under each dragster, and (the students) feed fish line through so the dragster can’t fly off the track and injure somebody. For the Flight category, middle school students created a balsa wood glider launched from a catapult and high school students created a rubber powered model airplane built to event specifications. In the Children’s Stories category, students were invited to create their own story accompanied by illustrations. “The point of that event is to show skill in desktop publishing, Everhart noted. The competition also featured a Technology Bowl, which is a written knowledge test taken by middle school and high school students. Students are scored individually and as a team. “The high school team of three placed seventh. That means we can enter a team at states, Everhart said. The TSA State Conference will be held at Seven Springs Resort from Wednesday,

beginning at 6:30 p.m. According to Sarah Yohe, development director for GOTR, the theme will be “An Evening of Empowerment,” and the goal will be to raise funds for the GOTR financial assistance program. Yohe said GOTR expects 200 guests, including community leaders, GOTR sponsors, and community members. The event will feature a buffet dinner, an open bar, dancing to the sounds of Ink Vault, and a silent auction featuring at least 30 items, including a trip to Mexico, Barnstormers’ box tickets, and jewelry. Keynote speaker Meredith Jorgensen will speak on the topic “Empowering Girls,” and there will be a live appeal. “More than 53% of girls receive financial assistance,” explained Yohe. “This is a major annual fundraising event for scholarship needs.” Tickets to the banquet are on sale. Both table sponsorships and individual tickets are available. Readers who wish to purchase tickets may visit the previously mentioned website. The first Camp GOTR will be held from Monday to Friday, June 22 to 26, at the Thaddeus Stevens Greiner campus, 599 Chesapeake St., Lancaster. Camp will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day. In the mornings, girls will take part in curriculum activities led by the coaches. In the afternoons, the girls will attend experiential field trips to various businesses and other entities in Lancaster. The field trips will be led by women who are leaders in their fields. Among the organizations the girls will visit will be Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster the Lancaster Mounted Police K9 Unit and UPMC Lititz, where they will witness a robotic surgery. They will also take a tour of Thaddeus Stevens to learn about the programs offered there. Online registration for camp opened at the previously mentioned website on Feb. 18. Camp registration will be open to 45 girls who are rising third- to fifth-graders. “We are excited to offer an opportunity outside the traditional programming options,” said Kylie Homan, program coordinator with GOTR. “It will be tons of fun.”

“If I was getting the abuse Charlie Brown gets from friends and (his sister), Sally, I would not be as even keeled and tempered as he is,â€? shared David Felty. “I would be upset. (But Charlie Brown) stays the course and is true to his character and, in the end, even Lucy, his biggest nemesis, realizes that he is a great guy.â€? Felty is advising Lancaster Bible College (LBC) junior Cassidy Wray Martin, who is directing the production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.â€? The play will be staged in the Good Shepherd Chapel at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Friday, April 3, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 4, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 5, at 2 p.m. LBC senior Kayla Velasquez is choreographing with advice from Heather Grayberg. “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brownâ€? was written in 1967 by Clark Gesner and is a musical based on the “Peanutsâ€? cartoons created by Charles M. Schulz. The show consists of various vignettes to stage a typical day in the life of Charlie Brown, along with his dog, Snoopy. Characters such as Schroeder, Lucy, and Linus all make appearances, with a number of group songs to tie the narrative together. Musical numbers include “My Blanket and Me,â€? “The Kite,â€? “T-E-A-M (The Baseball Game),â€? “Little Known Facts,â€? “Suppertime,â€? and “Beethoven Day.â€? According to Felty and Martin, songs that should follow audience members home will include “My New Philosophyâ€? and “Happiness.â€? LBC has chosen to double-cast most roles in the show to give more students opportunities to perform. Casts will include Seth Jerabek and Dan Martin as Charlie Brown, Melody Griffith and Tori Nicktern as Lucy, Britt Jarkowsky and Abigail Simiele as Sally, Brad Myer and Braden Krikke as Linus, Zach Fernback and Rachel Potter as Snoopy, and Miles Brouillette as Schroeder. According to Felty, this particular show will be produced with rehearsals having been held only on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays. Martin noted that while all the shows staged at LBC are part of the educational process, as part of a class, this show has a deliberate focus on learning, so character development is a concentration of the effort. “We are hoping the students bring their own life to the character,â€? said Felty. “They don’t have to be the Charlie Brown or Lucy of the cartoon, and both casts don’t have to be like each other. (Each student) can find their own interpretation of the character.â€? The show will utilize costumes that suggest the characters and personify Snoopy the beagle, who will have dialogue and sing and tap dance. Felty, a professed “Peanutsâ€? fan, said he loves the show because it is simply fun. “It’s totally designed for children to enjoy ‌ (and it) is based on the actual cartoon. Even the songs come out of (the comic strip).â€? Martin agreed with Felty. “It’s super fun,â€? she said, adding, “My dad is really looking forward to this show.â€? Tickets to the show may be purchased at www.lbc.edu/events. Readers who have questions may call 717-560-8241.

According to Flora, not only were the members of the Smith ironmaking family descendants of Irish immigrants to the New World, so were many of the furnace workers who emigrated from Ireland during the potato famine from 1845 to 1849. March will also kick off HCVHA’s slate of spring classes about local history. PENNYSAVER According to Juliana Flora, HCVHA president, the breakfast will also be a celebration of the Irish heritage of ironmaster L. Heber Smith. This is a milestone year for the historic site, as Smith and his wife, Ella Jane Grubb, celebrated the birth of their first child, Clement “Clemmy Smith, in March of 1870. “This is a special year celebrating Clement’s birth, the Smiths’ first child, new beginnings and a celebration of the heritage that can be traced back to Ireland/Scotland in the 1500s, said Flora, a

Moore’s keynote address is titled “Teaching to Diversity: The Evolution of Inclusion.” “With 21st-century learning, our definition of what is success needs to include more people. We can no longer be striving towards a model where the goal of education is to replicate and duplicate ‘sameness’ in individuals,” Moore said in an interview about her research at the University of British Columbia (UBC) posted at www.grad.ubc.ca/campus-community/meet-our-students/moore-shelley. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in special education from the University of Alberta and a master’s degree from Simon Fraser University. and adults who have genetic or other complex disorders. Founded in 1989, CSC provides services to about 1,100 active patients and is recognized as a world leader in translational and precision medicine. The organization is primarily supported through community fundraising events and donations. CSC supporters typically host several auctions throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio each year to raise funds for the clinic. A new fundraiser has been added to the calendar. Kumme Essa, named for the Pennsylvania Dutch phrase for “come eat,” will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Springside Barn, 1294 Weaverland Road, East Earl. The Pennsylvania Dutch-inspired dinner will feature a twist on a traditional Amish wedding meal served family-style by members of the Plain community in a restored barn. The evening will include remarks from CSC physicians and clients’ families as well as a live auction. Platinum-level sponsors will also have an opportunity to share a few comments during the program. There is a cost to attend Kumme Essa, and reservations are requested by Thursday, March 19. Special pricing for groups of eight or more people are available through the sponsorship packages. Tickets may be purchased at https://clinicforspecialchildren.org/events/dinner/, or individuals may stop by the clinic. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, readers may contact Seitz at 717-687-9407 or eseitz@clinicforspecialchildren.org. and her team of trainers to the group. The group was gathering for a daylong program in Mental Health First Aid designed to teach the volunteers about confronting mental health issues on the job while also working to reduce the stigma associated with those issues. Miller explained Mental Health First Aid by comparing it to physical first aid. “Think about CPR and learning techniques to help save a life or recognize that someone is in medical need and step in, then take that model and flip it into a psychological approach,” she said. “We will recognize when someone has the onset of mental health symptoms and know how to respond and maybe save a life.” Miller said that the program covered signs and symptoms of mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse disorder, suicidal behavior, and nonsuicidal self-injury. “It’s nice to be on this side and recognize when somebody might be experiencing some of these before it ends up in a crisis,” Miller said. The program is also designed to help the volunteers recognize mental health issues in themselves and their fellow volunteers. “Those tools will be good on the job, but also with helping each other,” said Miller. “When we’re in jobs where people are witnessing trauma, (Mental Health First Aid) will set the stage for us to deal with our own responses.” Miller noted that during the 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. training, her team works to break down false beliefs. “We spend time trying to reduce stigma that is associated with mental health concerns,” she said. “We get people talking and more comfortable.” According to Miller, the team points out that the brain is an organ like the other organs in the body and should receive treatment when necessary in the same way other organs do. In addition to providing training for fire companies and EMS, the team works with police departments, state probation and parole, libraries, retirement communities, colleges, and high schools. “There’s a broad spectrum,” said Miller, adding that her team has worked with large corporations and is preparing a program for resident doctors working in hospital settings. Toward that end, retired police captain John Cooney traveled from Troy, N.Y., to take part. Cooney talked about his own experience with post-traumatic stress disorder and how seeking help changed his life. GSFR Chief Darryl Keiser credited GSFR director of development Daryl Groff with suggesting the training. “After facing the loss of a brother firefighter, who decided to take his own life, … it became apparent to us as a department that we needed to take a closer look and be better prepared for the stresses and trauma that members face … and the emotional toll that takes on a first responder’s mental and emotional wellbeing,” said Keiser. “The firehouse and its members are a second family, and we need to have each other’s backs both on the emergency scene and back at the station. Our ability to recognize when one of our family is struggling needed to be improved, and we felt this training would give us those tools.” Readers who would like to know more about GSFR may visit www.gsfr39.net.

Rizzetta’s Tones will return to the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., Ephrata, on Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. The sound of Irish music will fill the center when the foursome performs a St. Patrick’s Day-themed concert. Admission is free to the program at the historic Eicher House in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. Refreshments will be provided. Rizzetta’s Tones is a Celtic and folk group whose members sing and play diverse musical instruments, including the hammer dulcimer, bouzouki, button accordion, mandolin, autoharp, melodica, and more. The group’s repertoire includes music from Ireland, Scotland, and the United States, with original songs as well as new arrangements of older music. Donations to the arts center will be accepted. For more information, readers may call 717-733-6161.

Senior Connections To Meet Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, will be the site of a meeting of Senior Connections on Thursday, March 12. The event will begin with a free meal at noon, followed by the program “Wisdom From the Trail,” which will be presented by Lois and Ernie Hess. The couple worked to complete their dream of hiking the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine by the time they reached age 75. They will share glimpses of the journey, including photos and stories of beauty, challenges, obstacles and learning along the way, as well as God’s provisions for them. All local residents age 60 and older are invited to attend.
