Ease The Burden - Local Organization To Focus On Schools/Community Service BY ANN MEAD ASH
When Ease the Burden (ETB) was founded in 2019, the organization sought to help fill financial gaps for families throughout Lancaster County. In the few years since, however, ETB board members have decided to partner with educators in a pilot program to help area children. They formed a relationship with Pequea Valley School District (PVSD), working with Kathy Koenig, director of student services for PVSD. “We found that we had started to focus specifically on children as the group we were trying to help,” said Sean High, one of the founders of ETB. ETB board members plan to connect with other districts in the future. Along with adjusting the focus, the idea of giving back to the community will be part of ETB’s DNA. “We really wanted to emphasize community service,” High stated, noting that school staff See Ease The Burden pg 6

VisionCorps’ Virtual Format Provides Education And Community BY ANN MEAD ASH
In June of 2019, the organization launched memory cafes to provide settings for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to enjoy social engagement and conversation about relevant topics in a stigmafree environment.
When COVID-19 restrictions shut down the state in March of 2020, VisionCorps, a nonprofit organization working to empower the blind and vision impaired, stopped providing services, but not for long. “We shut down services for a couple weeks, but we quickly realized our services were still

By September of 2020, Crystal was working as coordinator for the organization, which moved to join Dementia Friendly America (DFA) in November of that year, becoming Dementia Friendly Lancaster County (DFLC). At the same time, Crystal became a champion for Dementia Friends PA, which gave her the opportunity to host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly. To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people

can serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a working group, which furthers DFA initiatives and plans events. Crystal noted that people with dementia and caregivers will be essential to the group, but that representatives from businesses and organizations will be important as well. “We want to discuss ways businesses can be more dementia friendly to customers, (such as) creating an atmosphere that is conducive to a customer with dementia or supporting an employee who is a caregiver,” she said. Melody Karick, who serves as director of memory care with GSV, noted that a goal of the organization is to eliminate stereotypes. “One of our hopes is to break the stigma of dementia, by making people aware that it’s OK to have this disease,” she said. “We don’t need to hide it or be ashamed of it, and we are the people that can make a difference.” She added that when she trains team members at GSV’s Meadow View Memory Support campus, she focuses on showing them different approaches to a situation. “There is a way to enhance quality of life for someone who is going through this and their care partners,” said Crystal, who is planning a Wednesday, April 28, breakfast for a limited number of people. The breakfast will bring key businesses in the Lancaster County area that are already doing dementia work on board with the organization. “(The breakfast is about) how we can partner together to make this a dementia-friendly Lancaster County,” said Crystal. To stay within the restrictions, Ament explained that VisionCorps developed a hybrid approach to service delivery. The hybrid programming is part virtual and part in-person. “You can’t safely teach someone how to cross the street over the computer,” noted Ament, who added that the organization was careful to protect all involved. “Our goal is to address safety with employees and the clients we serve,” he said. “For instance, a lot of our intakes are done either over the computer or the phone, but when someone needs direct attention, whether it’s our occupational therapy or mobility program, (it’s completed in person) with safety precautions taken.” Virtual programming in a variety of formats has been utilized by VisionCorps staff as well as associated groups that receive services. “We have a lot of small groups meeting virtually,” said Ament, referring to the nearly 20 groups that discuss topics from mobility to books to service dogs. “We serve five counties, and each one has a support group and topics to discuss,” shared Ament. In addition to offering virtual services to clients, Tomsheck said that presentations can be made to outside groups. “Part of our marketing, awareness, and public education is that we do theme presentations to service clubs, churches, or any group that would be interested in learning how we can help them,” said Tomsheck. “We realize a lot of groups are meeting online, so we have made ourselves available to do those presentations for them.” Tomsheck noted that online training is available for educational purposes as well. “Chris’ team can do training for a retirement community that has several residents who are blind, and

members will organize community service activities in exchange for ETB funds. “So, you might have a third-grade teacher who would say, ‘Let’s take a Saturday afternoon to clean the park,’” explained High, who added that in return the class would receive an item that meets an educational need. When the recipient is an individual child, ETB will take steps to protect the anonymity of the student. Founder Mindy Lapp pointed to a school play as an example. “Due to the pandemic, the booster clubs don’t have as much money,” she said, adding that all the students in a cast would like T-shirts, but not every child’s family can afford one. “(Through ETB), the whole cast could (perform) community service, and they would all get T-shirts,” she said. Lapp added that she had spoken with teachers at both the Pequea Valley intermediate and high schools, who told her that students could complete service projects in small groups to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines. Another goal of ETB will be to connect with area businesses. “We could tie the business partners in with an item, and (the business could put) their logo on it,” High
said, adding that it is important for businesses to strengthen ties with the community at this time. “We could do a health bag with toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo to remove the health barriers to education,” High said. “(Schools) will tell us the items (that are needed) and the community service (to be completed).” He added that service projects need not be complicated. “It could be raking leaves for elderly people or shoveling snow,” he shared, adding that Koenig is working with teachers who have classroom needs and community service ideas in mind. Lapp added that the new focus will allow ETB to help many more students than they could with individual grants. “If you had 100 kids who receive a needed educational item and 100 hours of community service was served, that goes hand in hand,” she said. ETB board members include, in addition to High and Lapp, Jack Herr, Jill Castor, and Lisa LandisBlowers. After having to reschedule, the director is especially looking forward to sharing the hard work of the cast with audiences. “I really hope audiences can see there is still fun to be had in bad times,” he said, adding that he also hopes the theme of authenticity will shine through. “The message behind the show is being able to find your true self,” he explained. “You don’t have to lie or be fake. After more than a decade bringing musicals and dramas to the New Holland area, Cavod Theatre has looked back to the organization’s roots to stage a junior version of one of the theater’s first productions “The Music Man.” Last set to play in December 2020 but postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, the show, “The Music Man Jr.,” will be presented at Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, March 19 and 26; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, March 20 and 27; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 21 and 28. “It’s one of the more fun junior shows,” said director Alex Weaver, who grappled with the challenges of rehearsing under COVID-19 restrictions. Weaver divided the 36-member cast into “family groupings,” and taught the show’s lovebirds, Harold Hill, played by Derrick Lambert, and Marian Paroo, played by Soren Lefever, how to portray emotion without getting too close or looking directly at each other while singing. The plot of the musical revolves around Hill, a con man who pretends to be a band leader. He sells
musical instruments and band uniforms to the residents of River City, Iowa, while promising to train the members of the new band. The townspeople, with the exception of librarian and piano teacher Paroo, fall for Hill’s tricks. Although Paroo sees the truth, after witnessing Hill helping her younger brother, Winthrop, played by Brandt Esh, overcome his lisp, Paroo begins to fall for the trickster. “The Music Man” has been a staple of musical theater since it debuted on Broadway in 1957. The show is known for toe-tappers such as “76 Trombones” and “Ya Got Trouble,” along with the softer melodies of “‘Til There Was You,” and “Goodnight, My Someone.” Because “The Music Man” is such a popular show, Weaver is planning to deliver the classic tale but still offer audiences a bit of a fresh take by encouraging his actors, ages 9 to 17, to look into the depth of their characters. “I am a big fan of character development,” said Weaver. “I am trying to help them understand that every line in the script is in there for a reason to help them … understand their character a little better.” Weaver noted that it has been satisfying to see students take a break from what is happening in the world when they come to rehearsals. “(I enjoy) seeing the kids come in here and have fun for three or four

Additionally, the women added drawstrings to small bags made by Weber, which will be filled with various items before being shipped out of the country. Parry Sisters Earn District Swim Medals
Garden Spot was represented nicely by Ashley Parry and Kayla Parry at the District Three Class 3A swimming championships, which were held at Cumberland Valley High School on Saturday, March 6. Kayla Parry, a sophomore, finished sixth in the 200-yard individual medley and was 12th in the 500 freestyle. Her older sister, Ashley Parry, a senior, swam the 100 butterfly in 57.73 seconds to earn seventh place in that race. Parry swam the 200 freestyle at a 1:55.53 clip, which was good for eighth place. “Both girls had a very strong meet, going against some of the toughest swimmers in the state,” said Darin
Scouts Test Skills At “Pandemic Prep Klondike” Terre Hill Boy Scout Troop 172 recently participated in the Pandemic Prep Klondike event at Camp Mack, sponsored by Conestoga River District, part of Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council. Held over the weekend of Feb. 12 to 14, the Klondike drew a total of 21 patrols from 12 area troops. Leading up to the weekend, Scouts prepared their gear and sleds to work through 11 stations set up throughout the woods. Parry, the Garden Spot coach. “Ashley achieved two lifetime bests times in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly,” he noted. “She dropped 1.24 seconds in the 200 free. “She plans to continue to swim at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois,” added Parry. Ashley’s younger sister also achieved career bests at districts. “Kayla dropped almost two seconds in the 200 IM,” the Spartans coach pointed out. In the boys’ championships, which were held the same day but at Central York, Parry pointed out, “Peter Hasse qualified for the districts in the 100 butterfly and finished with a lifetime best of 1:05.38. He finished ninth. Haase knocked off nearly three
seconds off his qualifying time. He competed in the Class 2A. “Evidently the population of boys at Garden Spot is smaller than girls. This was based on student body population, so the boys were eligible to compete at AA,” said Parry. “The PIAA is having a reduced field of swimmers compete at the state championships,” continued the coach. “No Garden Spot swimmer achieved times fast enough to make them eligible for the 2021 PIAA meet.” WRESTLING Garrett Gehr finished sixth in his 132-pound weight class at the PIAA Class-AAA West Super Regionals, held in Altoona on Saturday, March 6. Gehr bounced back from a pin in the opening round as Seneca Valley’s Dylan Chappell managed to

register a fall in the second period. Gehr’s rebound bout was an 8-4 win in the consolations, topping Cumberland Valley’s Kyle Miller. The next round of consis went in favor of Waynesburg Central’s Colton Stoneking, who earned a 7-1 decision, sending Gehr to the fifth-sixth place match. Braden Bower of Williamsport came away with a pin early in the second period of that match. Dustin Swanson, a sophomore that has impressed many while he has wrestled in the heavyweight class, suffered a pin in the opening round as Hempfield Area’s Isaiah Vance moved on. In the consolations, Swanson was on the short end of a tough 5-2 decision that ended in favor of Oliver Billotte of Clearfield.

With a staff of 15, The Harbor provides around-theclock care seven days a week. “We accept women 18 to 35 years of age,” said Esbenshade. Esbenshade said that the program is implemented in a number of phases, beginning with an assessment and orientation. “We go over goals and how we can best help (a woman),” explained Esbenshade. “We tailor the curriculum to each individual.” The program includes a focus on trauma and drug and alcohol addiction, along with life skills training. During later phases of the program, the resident will work or attend school. Readers who would like to attend Welcome to the Battle may visit www.northstarinitiative.org and click on “Events.”

Attendees will be asked to follow Petra’s COVID-19 guidelines, including wearing masks. According to Esbenshade, the forum is designed to educate by posing questions to the panel about human trafficking, such as, “What is (human) trafficking?” “Who are the victims of this crime?” and “What can you do to get involved?” Esbenshade noted that runaways and homeless people are the main two groups of people who are preyed upon by traffickers. Trafficking that occurs in Lancaster County is often related to the network of highways that converge here. “We are a passthrough state,” explained Esbenshade, who noted that roads from New York, New Jersey, and Philadelphia come through Lancaster, York, and Harrisburg to Baltimore and Washington, D.C. 4-H Club Plans Meeting The Rough Riders 4-H Horse and Pony Club will hold an in-person reorganizational meeting on Thursday, April 1, at 6:30 p.m. at West Lampeter Fairgrounds, 851 Village Road, Lampeter. Masks are required and social distancing and other COVID safety measures will be observed. Attendees must be COVID-19 symptom free for two weeks prior to the meeting. This meeting is for youths who would like to join 4-H and for returning members. The club also strongly recommends that parents of first-time members attend. Preregistration for the meeting is required to ensure space and safety regulations are met. Participants should dress for the weather as the meeting will be held outdoors. It is suggested that families bring their own chairs or blankets to sit on. Owning a horse is not required to be a 4-H horse club member. At the meeting, the Rough Riders 4-H Horse Club will offer an equine massage demonstration, work in teen leader groups on equine knowledge activities and hold its monthly business meeting led by the officers. To preregister for the meeting or for more information, contact Jen Landis, Rough Riders 4-H Horse Club organizational leader, at 717-572-2340 or jen@schwalms.com. Additionally, online registration in the Pennsylvania 4-H enrollment system, zSuite, is required for all 4-H members by Wednesday, March 31. Instructions can be found by visiting https://extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h/counties /lancaster/join and clicking “Enrolling in 4-H.” All 4-H programs are available to all youths between the ages of 8 and 18 prior to Jan. 1. Anyone who anticipates needing any type of accommodation or who has questions about the physical access provided may contact Landis at the aforementioned phone number in advance of his or her participation or visit. For more information on the 4-H program, contact Lori Little, Extension educator, at 717-394-6851 or LancasterExt@psu.edu.
