DThe makings of a ministry

orothy Cavalcanti of New Holland remembers the first prayer pillow she ever made. “Isaiah (Metcalf) is now 17, and I made the first one for his fourth birthday, so that would be 13 years ago,” recalled Cavalcanti. Isaiah’s parents, Drew and Cindy Metcalf, are the founders of We Help Children and now the driving force behind a family restoration center - The Haft - located in Bradford County. The pair has been integral in the formation of Dorothy’s Prayer Pillows, a ministry that Cavalcanti said began with her wish to visit the Metcalfs’ ministry in Central America.

“The women’s group at (my) church (Christ First Church in Downingtown) bought a lot (of pillows from me), and that’s how I paid for my first trip to Guatemala,” reported Cavalcanti. Creating the pillows financed about two trips to Guatemala each year for several

years, ending with her final trip in 2017. The prayer pillows also raised money for the Metcalfs’ ministry over the years.

In May of 2020, Cavalcanti nearly died from acute pancreatitis.

“I knew I was dying, and God said, ‘I am sending you back to finish the work I have for you,’” stated Cavalcanti. “God healed me. It was a miracle.”

Since that time, Cavalcanti kept stocking supplies and wondering exactly where the pillow ministry was headed. She asked God for guidance. “I had my closet filled with fabric, but I didn’t make pillows when I wasn’t selling them, and I wasn’t taking them to Guatemala because I wasn’t going there,” said Cavalcanti, who continued to feel that God was instructing her to make more. By fall of 2023, Cavalcanti had closets filled with prayer pillows. “I started to think, ‘What is my vision for them?’” said Cavalcanti.

“I felt that God wanted me to use them as a ministry to children from

hard places, (such as children who have lived through) trauma.”

She wrote to Drew at The Haft to ask what he thought. “Drew had encouraged me to make them, so I asked if he had any ideas of where I could go with this,” she noted. Drew wrote back quickly saying that the children of the families he and Cindy counseled could use the pillows. Cavalcanti also realized children involved in the Matters of the Heart Support Group for foster and adoptive moms she organizes in East Petersburg could use the pillows. She plans to send nearly 50 pillows to an orphanage in Guatemala through a trip a friend’s church is taking in June, and she hopes to make pillows to take to Guatemala and Colombia when her cousin Donna Pittman’s ministry visits there to set up health clinics. “I envision taking them to other countries,” said Cavalcanti, adding that her church often visits Senegal.

Pastoral growth

Asked about his impressions of Lancaster County, Israel “Izzy” Zilinski, associate pastor of St. John’s Center Church, 432 Reading Road, East Earl, noted the similarities with his hometown of Halifax, located about 30 minutes north of Harrisburg. “It’s not too different from Dauphin (County),” said Zilinski. “Where I grew up, it was country, but the farmland is spread out more than here, and here you have things to do.”

Zilinski joined the staff of St. John’s, a United Church of Christ congregation, in late April 2023.

Zilinski graduated from Messiah University in December of 2022 with a degree in ministry. He worked in warehousing until being offered the newly created position at St. John’s, where he said his job is varied. “I do a lot of different things,” he noted, adding, “Anything Ken (Evitts, lead pastor), needs me to do.”

According to Zilinski, that includes preaching, teaching a children’s Sunday school class,

Over the past seven decades, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has grown from one couple producing one paper to a company that employs 150 people, distributes 16 community newspapers and multiple specialty publications to close to 200,000 people, and provides printing services for numerous clients. Although the scope of the business has changed, one thing has remained constant: community.

“We want to make that connection to our local merchants and to our community members,” said Charlie Engle, company president.

As EPC marks 70 years in business this year, Charlie and his daughter Jocelyn Engle looked back on what started in 1954 in the basement of Alvin and Pauline Engle’s Mount Joy home.

“My dad bought his own little press and put it in our basement,” Charlie said of Alvin. “He was working full time in the printing

LEMA unveils alternative weather alert system

The primary goal of the Lancaster County Emergency Management Agency (LEMA) is to prepare local residents for emergencies, from severe weather conditions to man-made disasters. The organization seeks to accomplish this by identifying potential hazards, providing training resources, developing emergency action plans and working with other emergency management agencies at the federal and state levels.

LEMA uses a notification system called LANC-Alert to send real-time updates to Lancaster County residents during emergencies. The alert system uses phone calls, text messaging and emails to keep people

informed, and many other emergency management agencies utilize similar procedures. Unlike many other agencies, however, LEMA faces the added component of serving Amish and Mennonite communities that have limited access to electronic communication.

To better serve Lancaster County’s unique communities, LEMA is in the process of creating a severe weather alert system for those who do not have access to LANCAlert notifications. The idea was proposed by the National Weather Service, which receives thousands of calls every year from

members of Plain communities who are concerned about severe forecasts and the threat that they pose to crops. The new system, which LEMA hopes to implement in the spring, will allow residents to opt in for emergency landline notifications by submitting a physical form.

LEMA took the idea to the Amish Safety Committee to assess which types of alerts Plain community members are most interested in, such as warnings for severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding. Although LEMA is still

developing a distribution plan, the organization will hand out opt-in forms at mud sales, farm and family safety days and other local events.

“This is part of a whole

community approach. We’re trying to think of all the different groups in the area and how to best prepare them for emergencies,” said Brooke Bowman, community resilience coordinator and volunteer liaison at LEMA. “The National Weather Service brought this idea to us as a guinea pig project because of how large the Plain community is here.”

Until 2021, LEMA worked with the South Central Task Force to send mass calls and text alerts via a reverse 911 system. After the system became inactive, LEMA used funding from the American Rescue Plan Act to create LANC-Alert, which it implemented in December 2023. “We’ve been rolling out the English community side of it more seamlessly. Lancaster County residents can sign up from their devices and choose which alerts they want to receive,” said LEMA hazardous materials administrator Zachary Gibbons. “People can opt in for anything from agricultural weather notifications to seasonal alerts.”

“We have a young adult group (at the church),” noted Zilinski, who added that he would like to start a youth group, having recently lunched with some of the young people who attend the church.

Zilinski also volunteers with the Released Time program at Blue Ball Mennonite Church, and he explained that a Released Time program played a crucial part in his call to become a minister. Elanco Ministerium sets Good Friday service

The Elanco Ministerium will hold a community Good Friday service on Friday, March 29, at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel at Garden Spot Village. The theme will be “Witnesses at the Cross.”

Pastor Al Stoltzfus from Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community will offer a welcome, call to worship, and prayer. Stoltzfus is the chair of the Elanco Ministerium.

In connection with the service’s theme, four biblical figures will be discussed. They are the thief spoken of in Luke 23:3943, discussed by pastor Ken Evitts from St. John’s Center United Church of Christ; Jesus’ mother as represented in John 19:25-27, spoken about by Garden Spot Village chaplain Karyn Nancarvis; the centurion featured in Luke 23:44-49, the subject of a message by pastor Kevin Kirkpatrick from Terre Hill Bible Fellowship Church; and Joseph of Arimathea in Mark 15:42-47, See Elanco pg 10

system, he was introduced to Released Time in elementary school. “I went because all my friends were going, and I didn’t want to stay in school for an hour by myself,” recalled Zilinski, who soon found he loved taking part. The program changed his life.

“It’s where I started believing in Jesus,” he recalled. While attending Halifax High School, he became involved in a church youth group, where he took on a leadership role. “I had spoken a few times,” recalled Zilinski, who called his talks “five-to10-minute sermonettes.”

“One of my leaders told me, ‘Izzy, you are good at this and it seems that you enjoy it.’” The leader asked if Zilinski had considered going into ministry. “I said,

‘No,’” Zilinski recalled. “I hadn’t even considered what I wanted to do with my life, but I said I would look into it.” As he explored the option, he began to see himself in the role. “The more I thought about it, (the more I thought it) was cool and something I could be good at.”

St. John’s member Carol Gilbert noted that hiring Zilinski will help the church to bring back some programs that were put on hiatus due to COVID19 restrictions. “I would like to see (vacation Bible school) come back,” noted Gilbert.

Zilinski said he is looking forward to seeing the church grow and growing his own experience in the role. “I’ve enjoyed it a lot so far,” he noted. “It has

taught me a lot about ministry and how it works.” A newlywed, Zilinski will celebrate his first wedding anniversary with his wife, Hannah, a preschool teacher, on Monday, June 17. The couple makes their home in Elizabethtown. St. John’s Center Church holds Sunday school at 9 a.m. each week followed by a service at 10:15 a.m. More information about the church may be found at www.stjohnscenterucc.org.

In 1959, EPC purchased its first community publication, the Merchandiser, and by 1960, Alvin had quit his day job to focus on the new business full time. It soon became a family enterprise, with Alvin and Pauline selling ads while their childrenCharlie, Audrey, and Denny - helped where they could.

Charlie recalled the tedious task of cutting and hand-gluing address labels on the paper as well as folding each of the newspapers by hand. When Alvin died unexpectedly in 1971, the family faced a decision.

“My mother came to us and said, ‘There are some people who are interested in buying the business,’” Charlie recalled. “The three children all agreed, and we all said no to selling. We knew we could do this.”

Charlie became company president, with Denny serving as vice president, positions both men still hold today. Audrey also dedicated herself to the company before her death in 2018. Pauline continued to work for EPC well into her 70s. She passed away in 2020. Today, there are also four members of the third generation of Engles at EPC,

with several fourth-generation family members helping out sporadically.

Outside printing is the bread and butter of the business, with production running 24 hours a day, five days a week. Along with continuing to publish the Merchandiser and other community papers, including the Pennysaver, Advertiser, and Community Courier, EPC produces local Chamber guides, Farm Show premium books and more.

Seventy years of business has included ups and downs for the company, Charlie said. Challenges have ranged from competition to rising costs to navigating the pandemic. Through it all, EPC has remained focused on its original mission: serving the community.

“Our family and the company have been blessed,” Charlie said. “Since we’ve been blessed, we want to bless others. We started a foundation in the early ‘90s, and that supports a variety of local programs.”

EPC publications focus on telling the good news happening at nonprofit organizations, schools and local businesses, and that’s more important than ever, Jocelyn said.

“We are surrounded by bad news,” she said. “Every time we turn on the TV, every time we open our phone, it’s upsetting. It brings us down. There are so many good things happening in our community, and we want to shine a light on them.”

Asked about the secret to EPC’s longevity, Charlie didn’t hesitate to answer. “We’ve had good people,” he said simply. “We have so many longtime employees, some who have been here for 35 or 40 years.”

As for the next 70 years, Charlie and Jocelyn envision a bright future. The company is transitioning into providing digital

solutions for clients, while continuing to support local businesses and tell positive stories through its community newspapers and online at www.townlively.com.

“I love the legacy my grandfather started,” Jocelyn said. “I never met him, but I know his goal and his mission was to support the community, and we won’t lose that connection to the community. We will continue to be hyperlocal, providing our advertisers with options to target just their region and news specifically about your school district and local community. We’re focused on right here, where we live, and all the good things that are happening.”

Introducing girls to engineering

Speaking to an auditorium full of high-school girls, Dr. Sara Atwood recalled a story about the early days of seatbelts. The male engineers designing the device, noted the Dean of the School of Engineering and Computer Science at Elizabethtown College, neglected to consider the needs of pregnant women when making the safest seatbelts possible.

“We care about having every perspective in the room,” Atwood told the girls. That’s the motivation behind Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on the campus. The second annual event was held in late February, drawing girls from 10 area high schools, including Penn Manor, Elizabethtown, Warwick, Columbia, Garden Spot, Hempfield and Conestoga Valley.

“As a girl in engineering myself, I’m especially proud of this effort by E-town’s new Society of Women Engineers Student Section to Educate for Service,” which is our motto here at Elizabethtown College,” Atwood said. Last year, organizers planned on hosting about 30 girls, and the seats filled up immedi-

ately, so they expanded the program this year.

“It’s exciting to see the tremendous growth in just our second annual offering of this event,” Atwood shared, noting that about 100 girls were in attendance. They rotated through four workshops, including making mechanical inchworms, “Pac-Man Coding” and creating water filtration systems.

“My favorite class in high school was English,” Atwood told the assembly at the program’s start.

“There are a lot of ways to be an engineer and a lot of different paths to get there. You can love to write and be an engineer. Calculus does not have to be your favorite class for you to be an engineer. You have to be able to do the math, but you don’t have to love it. Don’t think about what you want to be. Think about what you love to do.”

For Columbia High School students Mar Mendoza and Sophia Garza, the program appealed because both wanted to learn about new topics and potential careers.

“Engineering seems so fun, and it’s something I’ve thought about going into,” shared Mar, a freshman.

“I think this program will

show me more opportunities of what I might do for a career in engineering.”

Sophia agreed, adding that she was particularly interested in coding. “When you have an opportunity like today, you should take it,” said the ninth-grader. “It’s a good opportunity to learn more about STEM careers and develop a background in that in case I want to do something like that in the future.”

Atwood emphasized that the day was designed to introduce the girls to engineering through hands-on projects and interaction with engineering faculty and students. Ultimately, she hopes events like Introduce a Girl to Engineering will close the industry’s gender gap.

According to a DiscoverE and Global Strategy Group research study, only 11% of female high school students are interested in the engineering field, compared to 24% of males. The Elizabethtown College event was part of a nationwide campaign to increase the number of women in engineering fields. It was funded in part through a Lancaster County STEM Alliance diversity, equity and inclusion grant.

Lions Club sets egg hunt

The New Holland Lions Club will hold an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, March 30, promptly at 10 a.m. The event will take place at New Holland Commu -

nity Park on East Jackson Street.

Children age 11 and younger may hunt for some of the more than 4,000 eggs that will be

stuffed with candy and money. The Easter Bunny will be on-site for photos, and ELANCO Library will be present with free books and prizes, as well.

“I didn’t know any engineers when I was in high school and wasn’t sure about it as a career path, but I went into college and found that I loved it,” Atwood stated. “I hope that we can inspire these young women in the same way.”

Prayer pillows from pg 1

pil lows on her sewing machine in a corner of a back room in her home. Each pillow is large enough for a child to lay his or her head on. One side is fleece, and the other is a satin-like material. On the satin side is a pocket made from the same fleece that’s on the front. The pocket holds 31 cards, each with a Bible verse and a prayer for the child to say that’s related to that verse. “The idea is to teach children to pray, and it gives them something soft,” said Cavalcanti. The pocket also holds a poem Cavalcanti originally wrote for Isaiah that represents

the prayer pillow talking to the child and a copy of “Me and My Prayer Pillow,” which explains how a prayer pillow can help a child learn how God can use him or her. All the materials in the pocket have recently been translated into Spanish. Cavalcanti explained that the fleece patterns can often be matched to a child’s preferences. She has material representing sports teams and brands of toys and emblazoned with unicorns.

Tuesday, March 26 at 9 AM Held

Garden Spot’s winter track club team completed its 2024 season on Feb. 17. Unlike the spring outdoor season of dual meets between two Lancaster-Lebanon League schools, the indoor season features invitationals hosted at colleges, including Alvernia University, Franklin & Marshall College, Bucknell University, Dickinson College, and Lehigh University. Typically, 20 or more high school teams compete at an invitational, including schools outside of Pennsylvania.

Although invitationals are held at indoor track venues, Garden Spot’s athletes practice at their outdoor track. The team was led by coaches Devon Lewis, Traci Tempone, Trevor Lehman, Doug Lewis, and Sydney Fitzwater. The team includes both middle school and high school students; however, only high school athletes may compete at invitationals.

The Garden Spot athletes competed at seven invitationals this season and set various personal records (PRs). Among these, Wynne
