SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954
VOL LVIII • NO 15
Return On Investment nna D’Agostino, director of the ELANCO Area Library, wants residents in the library’s service area to know the return on investment they receive when donating. “We have a community space with free Wi-Fi and public computers,” she said, noting that scanning, faxing, and a climate-controlled environment are also offered. “We are open 51 hours a week (to provide) a safe environment for children and adults.” She added that a variety of materials are available along with literacy and STEM building programs. “If you’re going to contribute to something, there’s a lot of value here at the library,” she said. D’Agostino joined the library as director in December of 2021. Prior to coming to ELANCO, she served as assistant branch manager and librarian at Brooklyn Park Community Library in Baltimore. Before that, she was electronic resources librarian at Loyola Notre Dame Library, Baltimore. She has lived in

a variety of places in the U.S., and she has always loved libraries. At the end of January, Jen Watson became assistant director and youth services coordinator for ELANCO. Watson, who is from Colorado, has a background in environmental education, which brought her to the Whitaker Center, Harrisburg, where she was a STEM programming manager. Together with other staff members, the two women coordinate the many offerings of the library, which range from room rentals to museum passes. ELANCO Library board member Susan Burke pointed out that in addition to staff expenses, the library must pay for electricity, heat, and other costs. Although, ELANCO is supported by the state and funds from five local municipalities, a large percentage of the budget is not covered. “Our goal is to get the word out about how libraries have to fundraise twothirds of our money,” said Burke. For many years, much of that funding came from the library auction,

“Being a clown is about building relationships,” said Andrew Imhoff, whose clown name is Roland. Imhoff has been a volunteer clown with the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy for a number of years. “I love building relationships with kids and being able to see children happy no matter what they’re going through.” See Make-A-Wish pg 4

New Holland Is About To Blossom
New Holland Business Association vice president Kirk Neidermyer is looking forward to seeing planters beautify Main Street again this summer.
Several types of spring flowers have already opened up in central Pennsylvania, but New Holland will really blossom when more than 60 planters filled with a variety of blooms and accents line Main Street from Kinzer Avenue to Hoover Avenue. The planters are a project of the New Holland Business Association (NHBA), dating back more than a decade. According to Kirk Neidermyer, NHBA vice president, the planters will be placed on Monday, May 2, and flowers will be planted in

Before placement, they will be cleaned by a work crew from Lighthouse Vocational Services. Choice Flowers will fill the planters with a variety of blooms and greens based on the sun and shade quotient where each planter is located. Keystone will make sure the flowers are watered throughout the summer. The planters will be removed in early November and stored for the winter. See NHBA pg 6

Volunteer clowns are needed to put smiles on the faces of attendees at the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy in Manheim.
Clown organizer Amy Nolt, who goes by Harmony when she is wearing her black vest adorned with musical notes, would love to see at least 25 volunteer clowns join her when the Make-A-Wish Convoy returns to its typical format after a two-year absence. For 2022, the Convoy will be held once again at the Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim, where it will be held on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8. The carnival will begin at 8 a.m., and the trucks will leave at 1:30 p.m. Event activities for the public will include a chicken dinner and live auction. Make-AWish grants the wishes of children facing life-threatening illnesses, and the Truck Convoy provides funding for more than 75% of the wishes granted by the Philadelphia/Delaware/Susquehanna Valley Chapter every year. Make-A-Wish clowns may begin as early as 8 a.m. by taking part in the carnival. Some clowns do tricks, but others simply brighten the faces of the Make-A-Wish kids. “If you can put a smile on a kid’s face for 30 seconds, that may be the smile he needs for his whole life,” said Imhoff. About $10,000 of the funds raised by the Convoy is collected by the clowns, who grab buckets and follow the trucks in cars driven by volunteers. Amy noted that she will need one car and driver for about every four clowns who are sent out to collect. “Anybody can be a clown,” said Amy, who first began clowning as part of a college ministry. She connected with

Make-A-Wish nearly 30 years ago when her husband, Mark, met up with Dennis Ober of Manheim, perhaps better known as Obie the clown. Amy soon convinced Mark to join her at the Convoy, and he chose a golfing theme for his clown outfit to go with the name Teed Off. Their first daughter clowned with them at the tender age of 9 months. Imhoff performed magic tricks and twisted balloon animals for a few years before meeting Ober at a church event. “A lot of people think about (professional clowns) when they hear ‘clowns needed,’” said Imhoff. But he said no experience is necessary to volunteer. Imhoff likes to keep his clown costume simple, choosing a hobo outfit because of the minimal makeup and uncomplicated clothing. He also feels the simplicity of his look makes him more approachable. Both Mark and Imhoff noted that they enjoy the clowning experience. “Every year, I have more fun than the year before,” said Mark. “It’s a whole new story every year,” added Imhoff. Amy emphasized that people of any age can be volunteer clowns. Whole families are welcome to clown together, and children may clown as long as a parent or other adult is with them. Amy will hold classes on Saturdays, April 9 and 23, to teach volunteers about makeup and costumes along with a little clown etiquette. Readers who are interested in volunteering to clown for Make-A-Wish may email nolt138@gmail.com for more information.
Meet The Goldens Event Scheduled Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue will hold its monthly Meet and Greet the Goldens event from 10 a.m. to noon at its Golden Gateway facility, 60 Vera Cruz Road, Reinholds, on Saturday, April 9. Thrift Stores Mark 50 Years Of Making A Difference There is power in a pair of pants, strength in a shirt and joy in a jacket. Over the past 50 years, Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) has provided financial support around the world through its MCC Thrift shop network. To date, MCC Thrift shops have contributed more than $250 million to help people in need. The first MCC Thrift shop opened in 1972 in Manitoba, Canada. Since then, the network has expanded to more than 85 stores across Canada and the United States. In Lancaster County and just outside the county, there are seven MCC Thrift shops: Columbia Re-Uzit Shop, Country Gift & Thrift Shoppe in Gap, Main Street Closet in Willow Street, Mount Joy Gift & Thrift, ReUzit on State in Ephrata, Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland and Morgantown ReUzit Shoppe. Last year, these stores raised more than $1.6 million for MCC’s ministries. “The first MCC Thrift shop to open in Lancaster County was the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland in 1976,” said Roland Anye, thrift shop coordinator for MCC East Coast. “Mount Joy Gift & Thrift and Columbia ReUzit Shop have been operational since 1977 and 1978 respectively.” As Anye explained, shopping at an MCC Thrift store benefits both the buyer and the recipient of MCC funds. Shoppers can pick up cloth-
ing, housewares and furniture for a bargain, while their purchases provide support on a global scale. After a minimal portion of the proceeds is used to keep the stores in operation, most of the money raised is donated to MCC. “Donations from the thrift shops are designated to ‘where needed most,’” Anye said, explaining that the funds are used to support domestic and international work of MCC. MCC partners with other organizations to provide care kits to prisoners, agriculture education to farmers and peaceful conflict resolution education, as well as many other initiatives in the more than 40 countries where MCC works, Anye noted. Deb King, national thrift shop coordinator for MCC U.S., emphasized that shopping at MCC Thrift shops can also have a positive impact on the environment by reducing waste and supporting climate sustainability. “By reducing the number of new items they purchase, shoppers can have a positive impact on the environment, keep clothing out of landfills and reduce the excess use of resources needed to make new clothing,” she said. To help celebrate MCC Thrift’s 50th anniversary, the organization is holding the Thifty 50 Challenge, said Laura Pauls-Thomas, communications and donor relations associate for MCC East Coast. “Sign up to receive a weekly sustainability challenge that helps our

but for a variety of reasons, organizers are looking into other funding techniques. “We are calling this year’s fundraiser the Operational Campaign of 2022,” said Burke. The library sends out an annual appeal letter in early fall and takes part in the Extraordinary Give, which will be Nov. 18 this year. Currently, the fundraising committee is putting together a $600 prize package that includes a donated grill, a grocery store gift card, and utensils. In addition, the library is doing in-house fundraisers including a by-donation opportunity for children to win a free book. According to D’Agostino, a local artist created a birdhouse from Dr. Seuss books, which she gifted
to the library. “Patrons can contribute some change and fill out a ticket with name, age, and contact information,” explained D’Agostino, who added that every two weeks a book winner will be drawn. During February, a campaign to pay off children’s library fines brought in enough to restore library privileges to 13 youngsters. “Our role is to serve the public,” noted Burke, who added that D’Agostino has emphasized offering access to everyone in the surrounding area. “We are trying to do programs for the diversity of residents and age groups we have (in the ELANCO area).” More information about the library may be found at www.elancolibrary.org.
Sponsors may purchase a yearly membership, which is discounted after the first year. The membership fee covers placement of the planter, planting, and watering, and it includes a nameplate with the name of the sponsoring business on the side. Business owners are not guaranteed that a planter will sit in front of their Main Street location, but Neidermyer pointed out that a placement away from the business means putting the name in front of eyes in another part of town. Businesses need not be located in New Holland to order a planter. Neidermyer noted that NHBA members come from Earl Township, East Earl Township, and the bor-

The planters are made of rugged plastic, which makes them lightweight, but they are colored to look like stone or concrete. “I have six new ones coming that look similar (to the ones we have),” said Neidermyer, who noted the new ones would replace a few that had been damaged. Neidermyer said that more planters might be placed if sponsors come forward. Those wishing to sponsor a planter may call 717-6293687 or email kirk@choice homeremodeling.com.

Shirk Ballet Theatre Plans Completes Performance Leadership Program
Commencement ceremonies for Pennsylvania’s Rural-Urban Leadership (RULE) Program were held in State College on Dec. 10, 2021. The ceremonies were the culmination of a twoyear, blended curriculum of in-person, hybrid, and webinar programs. Among the honorees was Stephanie Shirk, a client relations manager with Penn State Extension and co-owner of Silver Valley Farm in East Earl. Shirk received a certificate signed by Gov. Tom Wolf, Penn State dean of agricultural science Rick Roush, and Extension director Brent Hales. The certificates were presented by Jim Ladlee, assistant director of programs for the Energy, Business, & Community Vitality Unit of Penn State Extension. The keynote speaker was Rick Vilello, deputy secretary for community affairs and development with the Department of Community & Economic Development. During his presentation on the topic “Building Blocks,” Vilello placed individual blocks on every chair at the ceremony. He used an analogy of building blocks to encourage guests to connect to others and build bridges, not walls, to bring about effective change. Shirk is one of 30 Pennsylvania residents to complete the two-year RULE Program. Through a series of in-person See RULE pg 12
