PA Family Travel Fair Is Back BY ANN MEAD ASH

Wendy Royal, editor of Where & When Pennsylvania and organizer of the fourth annual PA Family Travel Fair, knows that if you want to interest families, you need to appeal to children. With that in mind, Royal has lined up a balloon magic show, a few lovable mascots, reptiles, and a special passport game with a prize designed to make children smile for this year’s fair. The fair, which was first held in 2018, was held virtually in 2020 and canceled in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but for 2022, the free event will include exhibitors, amusements, food See Travel Fair pg 10

he Schoeneck Fire Company mud sale and quilt auction planned in 2020 was canceled, and the event was not held in 2021. But for 2022, the mud sale is back, and organizers have planned a variety of auction items and foods for the day of the event. The Schoeneck Fire Company, 125 N. King St., Denver, will host the mud sale and quilt auction on Saturday, April 16.

T

The event will begin at 9 a.m., with the quilt auction opening at 11 a.m. “We have lawn and garden tools, and we have toys and pedal tractors,” said sale organizer David High, adding that outdoor items such as potting soil and bird feed will also go over the block, along with a shed, plants, bushes, and shrubbery. “We hope to have tools,” stated High, who noted that manual scooters, craft items and about 25 themed baskets will be among the

items to be auctioned. The sale is known for including a variety of patterns and colors of quilts, and High said this year organizers hope to have at least 50, including full- and queen-size, along with wall hangings. Having a variety of foods available for purchase is a tradition at the mud sale. This year, food items will include homemade doughnuts, which are made on-site, along with soft pretzels and chicken barbecue

meals. Sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, and pulled pork sandwiches will be offered for sale, and soups will be chicken corn and ham and bean. The sale will continue until all the items have been sold. Proceeds will benefit the fire company. High noted that the organization is raising funds to purchase another fire truck. Heidi Kurtz BY ANN MEAD ASH

The last time Clair Leaman planned a “Messiah” Sing-along to be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, it was the spring of 2020. “We canceled that one,” said Leaman, who, along with others, organizes the Sing-along at Westminster, as well as a Christmas event in Chester County. The Chester County presentation was held again in December of 2021. “We didn’t know what to expect,” said Leaman. “We had a pretty good turnout, and I was amazed because I had no idea what to expect after being gone for two years. The people are still with us and still wanting to sing.” See “Messiah” pg 6

The 23rd Messiah Sing-along will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, on Friday, April 22, at 7 p.m. Leaman will conduct the soloists, choir, and orchestra, and guest conductor Bruce Gerlach of Lancaster Bible College will conduct the “Hallelujah” chorus. The sing-along is unique because area vocalists are invited to purchase or rent “Messiah” scores and then take part in the presentation. The event is also open to those who would just like to listen. The tradition has its roots in the founding of the Chester County Christian Chorale by Leaman in 1976. The Lancaster version of the sing-along, which only includes the second and third parts of Handel’s “Messiah,” began in 1998. “We start with ‘Behold the Lamb of God,’” explained Leaman. At first, the concert was held at Neffsville Mennonite Church, but in the spring of 2000, it was moved to Westminster. New soloists for the event are soprano Sarah Shafer and bass Steven Condy. Returning soloists are contralto Heidi Kurtz and tenor Timothy Bentch. Shafer has sung with the San Diego Opera and the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. Condy is on the roster of The Metropolitan Opera, as well as a number of national operas. Kurtz is a core member of the Philadelphia Singers and has performed solo with the Mendelssohn Chorus of Philadelphia. Bentch served as a missionary in Hungary, where he also sang at the Hungarian State Opera. Frank Dodd, who oversees music at Westminster, has joined the board of the organization as special adviser to the director. He will play the harpsichord in the April 22 presentation. Leaman recalled that more than 100 took part in the Christmas event. “Come as you are,” he invited, noting that masks are optional. A freewill offering will be received. right mix, looking to turn the tide. “We are moving people around in the field and the lineup,” she said. “I think we will have a better second half of the season.” BASEBALL “We have had strong pitching performances to date, but have struggled defensively and at the plate,” head coach J.D. Stern commented. The pitching has had them in some close games. They pulled off a 6-5 victory over Elco on Monday, April 4. The Raiders posted single runs in four frames and held a 4-1 lead heading into the home half of the sixth. That was when the Spartans rallied for four runs to take a brief 54 lead. In the wild finish to this nonleague game, the Raiders tied it up in the top of the seventh only to watch the Spartans walk it off in their final at bat. Speaking of walking, the Spartans took advantage of Elco wildness, drawing 11 walks and also having a hit batsman. The big offensive production came from a quartet of players. Senior George Rohrbaugh went 2for-3 and scored two runs. He drew two of those 11 bases walks in the leadoff spot. Caleb Zimmerman was on base four times - a double and three walks. He drove in two runs. Caiden Murphy doubled and scored a run. He drove in two. He also stole two bases. Luke Steiner was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs.

Joshua Tudor went 5 1/3 innings, striking out six. Freshman Madix Bracken relieved him and earned the win, despite giving up the tying run in the seventh. Sandwiched between Elco and Cocalico was a tough 3-2 loss to Octorara on Friday, April 1. “Caleb Zimmerman pitched a great game, but had a tough loss,” Stern said. “We had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and hit into a triple play.” The Spartans fell to 2-4 on the year with a 12-2 loss to Exeter Township on April 5. The fielding issues Stern alluded to were evident in this loss as the Eagles took advantage of six Garden Spot errors. Joel Martin drove in both Garden Spot runs. BOYS’ LACROSSE Two straight matches with 10 goals netted two wins as Garden Spot improved to 3-1. Ayden Naranjo’s hat trick and two goals each by Logan Lesley, who assisted on four goals, and Kane Leaman led the way in a 10-1 defeat of Ephrata on March 31. Cole Leaman who had two saves in that match, grabbed 12 saves at Twin Valley in a non-league Monday match. Lesley scored four while Narano assisted on three and scored one goal. Max Davis and Jared Patton each tallied two goals. Joe Berneck (1g, 3a) came through as well. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Garden Spot won one high-scor-

What’s In A Name? Catherine O’Sullivan, director of the library in Intercourse, does not know exactly why the library’s name was changed to Pequea Valley Public Library sometime after 2001. But she does know that when a suggestion was made in 2021 to change the name back to Intercourse Library, the library board responded immediately, unanimously, and positively. The library was started by the Intercourse Lions Club working with the first director, Margie Perella, in 1975. “It was called the Intercourse Library or Reading Center,” said

O’Sullivan. The library operated as a satellite of the Lancaster County Library System, and the Pequea Valley School District gave the Lions permission to use a one-room schoolhouse on the corner of Old Philadelphia Pike and Hollander Road that had been vacant for many years. The organization was incorporated as a nonprofit on July 25, 1988. In 1997, the library became independent of the county system. “In 2004, a capital campaign was launched to build the present library, which opened at 31 Center St., Intercourse, in 2007,” reported O’Sullivan. The library, which serves Par-

adise, Salisbury, and Leacock townships, is currently open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On Mondays through Thursdays, the library reopens from 3 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the library reopens from 2 to 5 p.m. O’Sullivan explained that the current hours worked well to separate staff members during COVID-19 restrictions and that during the mid-day when the library was closed, the staff had time to disinfect and

deep-clean the computers, public spaces, and bathrooms. O’Sullivan also discovered that area residents who visit the library prefer the hours. “I have people who like to be here in the early morning and people who need the evening,” she said. “It seems to be serving its purpose budget-wise (as well).” O’Sullivan also reported that the Salisbury Township Branch Library, Paris Smoker (left) and children’s librarian Christy Burke located at 835 Houston Run Drive, prepare for story time at the Intercourse Library. Gap, is thriving. See Name pg 16

Local Author Event Slated Local historian Darvin Martin will present portions from his book, “Family Record of Lester W. Martin and Hannah Elizabeth Fisher Martin,” on Thursday, April 21, at 7 p.m. at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. Admission is complimentary. The book spans the life of his grandparents, Lester W. and Hannah Fisher Martin, from when they were children in the 1920s and 1930s until they built a rancher-style house in 1964 beside the ruins of an old church near Napierville. The book and presentation will include new never-before-published family background information on the earlier ancestors of the local Martin, Fisher, and Weaver/Weber families, including photographs of many of the 144 quilts Hannah E. Fisher Martin created during her lifetime. The author will be available to sign books after the presentation. Books will be available for purchase at the event. For more details, call 717-393-9745.

Name from pg 11 In March, the library hosted a group of sixth-grade students during the mid-day hours when the library is closed to the public. “We didn’t have to worry about (using our) ‘library voices,’ and we could do a scavenger hunt,” said O’Sullivan, who noted that the learning experience was especially important to children who had not been able to frequent libraries during COVID-19 restrictions. “We are thinking to expand on that and try to reach out to homeschooling groups and others that might want to use the (the library in the) middle of the day,” she said. According to O’Sullivan, the majority of board members recall using the Intercourse Library as a child, and many area residents still use the original moniker because that is where the library is located. As of March 8, all the necessary paperwork had been filed to reinstate the name. “Now we are beginning a transition in terms of letting patrons, businesses, and vendors know,” said O’Sullivan. Readers who would like more information on the library may visit https://pvpl.org.
