Crafting Masks In New Holland By Ann Mead Ash

New Holland resident Brittany Flexer, a wife and the mother of two young children, has been facing the challenge of supporting her children’s online schooling while sometimes working until 1 a.m. making masks for essential workers and others in need of them due to COVID-19. While being interviewed for this story, Flexer was cutting out material for the 60 orders she was preparing to complete. Flexer, who was first asked to make two masks in mid-March by a friend who is a WellSpan nurse, is known for creating bibs, blankets, and more for babies, but this was her first venture into making masks. The nurse who contacted Flexer was not required to wear a mask at that time, but she was not comfortable without one, and supplies

were running low. Wanting to help out, Flexer began hunting for patterns. “I spent five hours doing research to see what types of masks could be made and which would be the best,” recalled Flexer, who added, “She was coming to me as a friend, and I wanted to give her the best I could do.” Flexer chose a version that resembles a dust mask. The design calls for two layers of nonwoven interfacing - a manmade fabric that may offer more protection than a woven material. The front and back outer layers are made of cotton. The mask includes wire at the bridge of the nose for a tighter fit. Flexer is making masks that either tie or have loops that go around the ears to hold the masks in place. Flexer donated the first two masks she made to health care workers. See Crafting Masks pg 2

Brittany Flexer of New Holland began making masks for health care workers in March, and she has since had many requests to make masks for area workers and residents. Flexer makes the masks by donation so that she can replenish her supplies of materials to make more.

Ministry To Offer Food Boxes Blessings of Hope (BOH), a wholesale food bank located on Becker Road in Leola, started out small. “We started in 2006 in a little garage in Farmersville,” said David Lapp, a representative of the ministry. The group recognized that food that was being wasted could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond, and it

Like so many other organizations, Black Rock Retreat, 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, has had to adjust its operations. The Christian camp and retreat center has canceled all retreat groups that had been scheduled for the next few weeks. The shutdown has resulted in a loss of income, and executive director Peter Fiorello noted that Black Rock depends upon retreat revenue, summer camper fees, and donations to pay staff members and to maintain operations. “As groups cancel, we have had to trim our staff, which stretches our ability to prepare for summer and the future,” Fiorello said. “We as a team continue to pray for wisdom and seek God’s help during these times. eventually developed relationships with more than 80 food producers. “We get semi-truck loads of product, and we redistribute to food pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries,” explained Lapp. “We serve the organizations that serve the people that need the food.” In the last few weeks, the changes wrought by COVID-19 restrictions have affected the ministry in a variety of ways. Most recently, the See Blessings Of Hope pg 6

Fairmount Brings Concert To Residents By Ann Mead Ash

On March 19, Mitchell Hanna, director of marketing, and other members of the Fairmount team were brainstorming ways to make life at the retirement community easier for residents who were affected by COVID-19 restrictions. “We had been talking about what we could do to meet emotional, spiritual, and social wellness (needs) of our residents,” said Hanna. “We had our chaplain doing small group sessions inside, but we were feeling bad about all the activities and group events (that had been canceled).”

Cedric Steiner, who had been shadowing team members at Fairmount in order to complete his training in nursing home administration, made a suggestion. “I know somebody who can sing,” noted Steiner, who taught at Lancaster Mennonite High School for 18 years. The singer Steiner had in mind was Manheim resident Mackenzie Brubaker, currently a junior at Messiah College See Fairmount pg 3

Manheim resident Mackenzie Brubaker, a Messiah College junior, sang hymns to Fairmount residents from five different outdoor spots on the campus on March 21. The music provided the residents, who are on lockdown, with some enjoyment to boost their spirits.

a few masks for children. “I try to make (the children’s masks) fun for them, so it’s not scary to wear a mask,” she said, noting that she has utilized child-friendly themes such as unicorns and dinosaurs. Flexer noted that the style of mask she chose takes a little longer to create. “If I have uninterrupted time with my assembly line going, I can make one in just

under 30 minutes,” said Flexer. However, with normal interruptions, one mask can take up to 45 minutes to complete. Since her children are at home - one is prekindergarten age and the other is a second-grader - Flexer has put her children to work completing age-appropriate tasks in helping her make the masks. She has now completed more than 100 masks. To know more about the masks, email Flexer at brittany flexer@gmail.com.

Crafting Masks from pg 1 “(I thought), ‘This is something I can do for (them),’” said Flexer. Since then, she has had requests from retirement communities, churches, grocery stores, restaurant employees, and other businesses. She is even creating cow masks for a local Chick-fil-A. On March 24, Flexer completed her first mask. Around April 3, the number of people requesting masks began to increase

significantly. Between April 3 and 5, more than 100 area residents requested masks. Flexer is making the masks by donation so that she will be able to replenish her supply of materials, much of which are in colors and patterns that are usually designated for children. “I have some bright plain colors and patterns with elephants and woodland animals,” said Flexer, who has made

One resident emailed Hanna about the concert, saying in part, “I wanted to let you know (that the music) is something we miss. We enjoyed the variety; that is a blessing in these challenging times. studying praise and worship. Hanna and Steiner took the idea to the Fairmount COVID-19 task force, a group of Fairmount leaders that meets daily to discuss how to implement COVID19 updates from local, state, and federal entities. With permission from the task force, Brubaker arrived at the campus on March 21 with her guitar and some sound equipment to give residents socially distant concerts of hymns. Beginning at 1 p.m., Brubaker held five mini concerts, making her way around the Fairmount campus at 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata. Brubaker first set up on the south side of the Crest View building. After completing a 25-minute concert, she moved to the north side of Crest View. By 2 p.m., Brubaker was singing classic hymns and taking a few requests at the Wheat Ridge building. Hanna noted that residents responded positively, with many of them singing along from their windows, balconies, or patios. “(Brubaker) probably sang eight songs and took two or three requests (per concert),” recalled Hanna, who added that at the last concert, Brubaker sang an

that community leaders are moving forward one day at a time, being careful to review Fairmount’s policies to be sure they align with the health restrictions. “It’s an unprecedented time, and we’re trying to do our best,” said Hanna. “We know it will be a long haul.” Fairmount is located on 55 acres in West Earl Township. The community consists of two adjoing campuses presently offering 114 licensed Health Care beds, 74 licensed personal care beds, 12 residential living residences, 103 apartments, and 52 cottages. The organization is governed by a nine-member board of directors. More information about the organization may be found at www.FairmountHomes.org or by calling 717-354-1800.

planning for summer and how we can best serve our campers and families, if God gives us the opportunity to do so.” In addition to working on ideas, Black Rock has also been involved in practical activities. “In an effort to support our staff through this challenging time, especially for those who have been laid off, such as housekeeping and kitchen staff who only work when we are hosting retreat groups, Fiorello requested that the kitchen staff compile packages of food and other essentials,” development director Kendall Keeler remarked. “The staff were then invited to submit an order and pick up these supplies from our kitchen. Since we can’t host retreat groups right now, we can share some extra supplies with our staff. It’s the least we can do.” One group of staff members is focused on feeding the nonhuman residents of Black Rock. “The outdoor education team at Black Rock Retreat continues to provide daily feeding and care

for the more than 20 species of animals that live in the nature center,” commented outdoor education director Jon Hill. The shutdown has meant that the nature center can no longer host school trips or other guests. Instead, the team has introduced the animals to social media. Every week on “ Wild Wednesday,” one of the creatures will be profiled on Black Rock’s Facebook page. Monty the ball python made his debut on April 1. Nigel the leopard gecko and Rocky the chinchilla have also had their time in the spotlight. The Facebook page also includes challenges and activities for children and adults to do at home as well as an invitation to support the organization through financial contributions. “We invite partnership from those who are able to help fill the gap of lost retreat revenue and to (fund) scholarships (for) affected families this year, as these times clearly will impact many in a deep financial way,” Fiorello said. Fiorello pointed to Psalm 86:1

Black Rock Retreat kitchen manager Bill Pitcher handed a box of food and supplies to guest services staff member Julia Libby as part of the Christian camp and retreat center’s efforts to support its employees during the shutdown. as a source of encouragement, as it is a reminder of God’s trustworthiness, mercy, joy, love, and forgiveness. Individuals can live out their confidence in God’s goodness by refraining from fear and panic and by looking for opportunities to help those in need, he said, adding, “We can show this love by doing two simple things each and every day moving forward: Ask your neighbor, ‘How are you doing?’ Then ask, ‘How can I help?’” Fiorello

continued, “During difficult times, the best way for us to show our love for God is by loving our neighbor and putting their needs ahead of our own.” Individuals may visit www.blackrockretreat.com/don ate/ to learn more about sending a child to camp, establishing a business partnership with Black Rock, or attending a fundraising event. The 12th annual LAUNCH Music Conference and Festival has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 23, through Sunday, July 26, due to the recent global pandemic. In the event that social distancing regulations are still in place in July, organizers are also concurrently organizing a virtual version of LAUNCH 2020. Organizers plan to be prepared to stage the entire event in real time on the web. This will include daytime live panels and questionand-answer sessions, mentoring and nighttime festival performance schedules. For those who have made hotel arrangements at www.launchmusic conference.com/where-to-stay, reservations will be honored for the new dates. In the event that the in-person rendition of the event is canceled, attendees will be fully refunded on lodging. People can continue to make their lodging arrangements through the website. Now entering its 12th year, LAUNCH Music Conference brings musicians, music industry professionals and music lovers from all over the world to downtown Lancaster for a weekend of instruction, networking and entertainment. Past performers and panelists have included Atreyu, August Burns Red, Dredg, The Early November, Emarosa, the Felice Brothers, Foxy Shazam, Ice Nine Kills, Meghan Trainor, Panic! organization has been contacted by a number of dairy farms with milk to donate. “We had 20 people call in the (first week of April) that had milk for us,” said Lapp, who noted that BOH has connected with a co-operative in Holtwood to receive milk. “They are sending two truckloads a day,” said Lapp during the second week of April. “We received close to 10,000 gallons of milk that we had pasteurized and bottled and we were able to distribute.” Some of that milk came to CrossNet Ministries in New Holland on April 7. Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager at CrossNet, was excited to receive 75 gallons. “Kreider Farms (of Manheim) pasteurized and bottled (the milk),” said Marburger, who noted the availability made a big difference for ELANCOarea families. “We are able to double what we give our families in milk this week,” she said. Although BOH is a wholesale food bank, it does distribute food boxes for families in need through a relationship with New Covenant Church of God, 111 E.

Chestnut St., Ephrata. Food is distributed at the church every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30. p.m. Over the years, the need for family food boxes has grown, but in recent weeks, the demand has gone up dramatically, according to Lapp. “In October 2010, we committed to providing seven boxes (of food) per week to a local pastor,” recalled Lapp. “On April 4 (this year), we packed 4,500 boxes in one day.” Lapp noted that each box is packed with 35 to 40 pounds of food, designed to feed a family of four. Among the contents are fruits and vegetables, milk, crackers, chips, and yogurt. “There’s a nice assortment of food going into the boxes,” said Lapp. The organization is also working with employers who have had to lay off their employees to help meet the needs of those who cannot work during the COVID-19 crisis. In addition to the number of boxes being distributed, the way in which the three shifts of 60 to 70 volunteers each handle those boxes has changed as well. Lapp said he spoke with both

Congressman Lloyd Smucker and state Sen. Ryan Aument about how to do outreaches during this time without drawing large crowds of people. “(The answer) was to prepack food in a family box and do drive-through-style outreaches where we put a box of food in people’s trunks,” explained Lapp. “We also have a health screening at our building where our volunteers are screened by local EMTs under the direction of a doctor (connected to) WellSpan Hospital,” said Lapp. “We want to keep everybody safe while they’re working here, and if we can control the risk to our volunteers, we can greatly reduce the risk at the outreaches.” The ministry has come a long way since its roots in the threecar garage, moving seven times over the years. “In 2010, we moved to our first warehouse in Ephrata on Trout Run Road,” recalled Lapp. “We had 1,500

square feet, and we felt we had all the space we needed … for about two weeks. Then everything filled up.” The pattern repeated itself several times. Finally, in August of 2019, BOH purchased a 44,000-square-foot former fruit warehouse near Oregon Dairy. In addition to the local outreach to area churches, BOH sends food to large cities. “We ship to New York City, Baltimore, and Philadelphia nearly every week,” said Lapp. BOH receives donated food in large quantities, but funds are still needed to move the food or prepare it for distribution. “We need cash to process (the milk),” said Lapp. “We could do so much more if the cash was there.” Readers who would like to learn more about BOH may visit www.blessingsofhope.com. Foose Serves During Break Cedarville University, Cedarville, Ohio, sent 16 Global Outreach (GO) teams with more than 209 students,

Pennsylvania Skill recently donated $250,000 to Feeding Pennsylvania, the state association of Feeding America Food Banks, to help the growing number of families struggling with food insecurity. The money from Pennsylvania Skill will be distributed among Feeding Pennsylvania’s nine member food banks that serve all 67 counties across the commonwealth, which are all seeing a rise in need as a result of the economic instability caused by COVID-19. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, which covers 27 counties, will receive a portion of the donation. The charitable food network continues to ramp up efforts to meet the increasing need, but this crisis response has also

resulted in a significant financial burden for the food banks in procuring additional food, supplies and transportation. Food banks have urgently relied upon the generosity of donors to support these costs, which include supplies to ensure the health and safety of their employees, volunteers and the clients they serve. Furthermore, the food banks have continued to see a rise in the cost of food from manufacturers. The need for donors will continue as food banks anticipate the crisis response may last for months. The Feeding Pennsylvania funding is the largest single contribution Pennsylvania Skill has made. Through its charitable giving, the organization regularly donates to community organi-

zations, including food banks, volunteer fire departments and social service organizations. Feeding Pennsylvania is a partnership formed among Pennsylvania’s Feeding America member food banks. Collective efforts promote and aid members in securing food and other resources to reduce hunger and food insecurity for their communities across Pennsylvania while also providing a shared voice on the issues of hunger and food access. Member food banks serve nearly 2 million people annually by distributing more than 160 million pounds of food through a network of more than 2,600 agencies. who understand fully. It’s also wonderful to see friendships form and the sharing of child care, resources and information.” The formation of Single Moms could not have come at a more crucial time, Underhill noted. “In these uncertain times, single parents may feel more isolated and alone than ever,” Underhill explained. “Fear of losing their job or income may plague their thoughts, and limited food, basic necessities, child care, and emotional support may mount up to overwhelming anxiety. Often, too, a stressful event may trigger PTSD or bring up past trauma.” Parenting is difficult, but doing it alone when social and practical supports are no longer available can be especially challenging. Underhill offered some encouragement to single parents, saying, “Know that you are strong and resilient, having faced difficult times before and emerging wiser yet.” Taking care of one’s self can help parents stay strong, Underhill said. She noted that catching up on sleep (if children allow it, that is), exercising, and eating as well as possible are important. Parents can also find a few minutes each day to stop and reflect and then make a plan for the following day. Establishing a daily routine is helpful in eliminating surprises, Underhill suggested. She also recommended taking a free class from online learning institutions and forming a child care co-op with other families in the neighborhood. Even with social distancing in place, there are ways that individuals can support single parents. “First and foremost, reach out to

Melanie Underhill check in,” Underhill said. “Offer encouragement, support, and validation. Lack of a partner to bounce ideas off of and to dispel anxiety can further the feelings of isolation.” Practical ways to support a single parent including making a meal or leaving a bag of groceries on their doorstep, dropping off books or an activity bag for the children to do at home, and researching available benefits, programs, and aid that single parents may qualify for during this time. Underhill is working on a housing share program to help to reduce the housing need in the community. Her idea is to connect single mothers with each other so that two single mothers and their children can share one home. “This helps moms afford a better home in a better neighborhood, cover expenses, (provide) emotional support, (and share) child care and household burdens,” Underhill said. “The community needs to think outside of the box to address the needs of single parents, especially in these trying times.” For more information about Single Moms or to be added to the Zoom meeting, readers may email Underhill at melaniesunderhill @gmail.com.

Farm Survey Deadline Extended The deadline for farmers in Lancaster and York counties to respond to a survey documenting conservation practices installed on their farms has been extended by a month, to Friday, May 1, due to challenges related to COVID19. The survey was mailed to farmers in these counties in late February. The Penn State Survey Research Center is continuing its operations and is able to process returns and answer questions farmers may have. Once the survey is complete, responses will be analyzed by College of Agricultural

Sciences researchers, and cumulative results will be provided to Pennsylvania’s Chesapeake Bay Office to document the practices farmers have adopted to conserve soil and water and to protect water quality. Responses will be completely confidential and never will be associated with a farmer’s name or location. Questions about the survey can be directed to Matt Royer at mroyer@psu.edu. For more information about the survey or to complete it online, readers may visit http://src.survey.psu.edu/ farmbmp.
