On Feb. 22, the Fairmount chapter of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) met in the Crest View Gathering Room. On a blackboard were written the words from Second Timothy 1:7, “For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” The night was special for a number of reasons. Golfers Invited To Take A Swing Against Homelessness EPC To Host Annual Outing By Kaylee Rex
When nursery teacher Dawn realized that Sherry, the mother of one of her students, was on the verge of homelessness, she connected her to Bridge of Hope @ Good Samaritan Services (GSS). The
program saved Sherry, the mother of four, after a family conflict jeopardized their living arrangement. Dawn also pulled together a “neighboring” group at their church, which became an essential support system for Sherry during her two years in the Bridge of Hope program. Through those essential two years, Sherry learned budgeting skills, was promoted in her full-time work and found permanent housing for her family. Sherry is just one example of the many women that Bridge of Hope @ GSS has helped become independent and successful. Bridge of Hope @ GSS aims to reduce homelessness among See Golf Outing pg 9

Spartans Battle Warwick but Fall Short, 15-14 by Ara Grigorian
The Garden Spot girls’ lacrosse team squared off against Warwick on Tuesday, scoring 14 times against the Warriors in a Lancaster-Lebanon League match at New Holland. The Warriors were able to eke out a victory over Garden Spot, however, by a slim margin of 15-14, making it the Spartans’ second straight loss by one goal - the previous being a 12-11 loss at Palmyra in a non-league game on April 11. “At Palmyra we were back-andforth but made some fundamental mistakes,” head coach Jen Leaman stated. “We had the ball in the final Photo by Bob Devonshire 30 seconds and couldn’t get a shot Garden Spot’s Sophie Torrance looks to get a pass past War- off. “We were actually up 8-2 in the wick’s Zoe Gooding during last Tuesday’s L-L League match in Warwick game,” Leaman continued. New Holland. “But we made some mistakes and let them get back into it. We panicked a little in the second half. “It came down to the last minute and we couldn’t finish,” she added. The Spartans, who fell to 2-9 on the year, were holding an 8-5 advantage over the Warriors, who improved to 3-5 (3-4 league). Each team had 25 shots on goal with Warwick’s Tanner Armstrong leading all scorers - six goals and an assist. Garden Spot’s Kiersten Ellsworth poured in five goals and assisted on one. Olivia Usner also had a hand in

six scores with four goals and two assists. “If they [Ellsworth and Usner] don’t find the open shots, they are able to work it around and find the open man,” Leaman remarked. “They are strong with their stick skills and take care of the ball.” In the barrage of shots, against Warwick goalie Zoe Stauffer (11 saves), Mandi Rider scored two for Garden Spot while Bella Mansi scored once and assisted on one. Lilly Leaman and Megan Esh also netted one goal each while Mataya Hostetter was credited with one assist. Lexi Horning recorded 10 saves for the Spartans. Asked if the consecutive close matches in addition to Wednesday night’s 13-11 defeat of Penn Manor, which improved Garden Spot’s league mark to 2-6, was indication of the program turning the corner, Leaman agreed. She referenced a 22-12 loss to a strong Lancaster Country Day team back on April 10. “We gave Lancaster Country Day a run in the first half,” she said. “You could tell they were surprised. We just need to finish and not let the opponents get back in it. We’ve heard comments from other coaches that we’re doing something here.” Wednesday’s win at Penn Manor featured five goals by Usner and four by Ellsworth. “We had a tight game with them last year and lost,” Leaman said. “So, the girls have developed a rivalry.” SOFTBALL The Spartans snagged an 11-1 victory not only from L-L League foe Lancaster Mennonite on Monday, but also from the windy, chilly elements. “It was the worst weather conditions we’ve ever played in,” head coach Kim King stated. “Even last year when we had sleet. This was worse. “With the wind, anything in the air was crazy,” she added. “The pitchers’ fingers were cold.” The cold fingers did result in Garden Spot pitcher Elizabeth King uncharacteristically walking four batters. She did, however, strike out 10 batters in pitching a one-hitter. Garden Spot, which improved to 7-3 in the L-L League, got on the scoreboard first, scoring in the bottom of the second inning. After the Blazers tied the score in the top of the third,

Garden Spot put up a five spot in the home half of the inning. “We needed to get a spark to get us going,” King said. “We got that one run; Mennonite got one run and we broke it open with five runs.” Garden Spot added four more in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to win the game early on the 10run rule. The Spartans had seven hits. They also took advantage of four errors and four walks. For example, in the five-run third, Gabby Spencer was hit by a pitch and scored on an error off the bat of Camryn Focht. Ali King had a bunt single and also scored on an error. Later in the inning, Ashley Risser drew a bases-loaded walk and fellow senior Zoey Parker stroked a two-run single. “We had some timely hitting some hard ground balls,” King said. The four-run rally included a
heads-up play by Ali King, who reached on a dropped third strike. She stole a base and scored on Elizabeth King’s RBI single. Megan Fisher doubled in a run. Risser and Amelia Mercado also delivered RBI hits. TRACK Garden Spot took on Lebanon in a Section Two track and field meet on Monday. Faith Coblentz gave the Spartan girls three first-place finishes. But the senior’s victories in the 200-meter dash, the 300-m hurdles and high hurdles weren’t enough in a 92-43 defeat. Coblentz ran the 200 in 30.4 seconds. She won the high hurdles in 16.8 and the 300 in 53.4. Elysse Mundorff captured another long jump event, winning with a 14-5 effort. Crossan and Ivan Ruble each stole one base. The win improved the Spartans’ record to 6-5 (6-4 league). BOYS’ LACROSSE With a pair of matches, including a non-league loss at Spring Grove, the Spartans fell to 1-8 on the year. Following Monday’s loss, the Spartans returned home and faced league foe Lampeter-Strasburg on Tuesday. The Pioneers posted a 13-7 win. The Spartans scored in each quarter at Spring Grove. They had 14 shots on goal in all. Benton Moyer led the team with two goals while Zane Fisher, Gavyn Naranjo and Ian Blankley each netted one goal. Titus Marburger finished with three saves in front of the Spartans’ goal. In the L-S match, the Pioneers jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one quarter. The Spartans cut the deficit to 7-3 by halftime, but the Pioneers added six goals in the third quarter. Noah Patterson scored four goals and dished off three assists for the Pioneers. Naranjo had a hat trick. Moyer scored twice while Fisher and Blankley each scored once. Marburger grabbed 13 saves in goal.

VOLLEYBALL In its two L-L League matches, the Spartans lost to Manheim Central and Lancaster Mennonite, dropping to 1-6 on the year (3-7 overall). Tuesday’s match with Manheim Central saw the Spartans play the Barons to two close sets before losing 3-0. After a 25-17 win, the Barons escaped the next two sets 25-19 and 25-20 as Mason Nissley poured in 28 kills and served up six aces. Garrett Fisher and Travis Myers led Garden Spot in kills, registering six each. Fisher also served up two aces. Davon Martin led the squad in assists with 10 while John Sauder recorded a team-high four blocks. Aaron Lapp was tops in digs with six. Playing in their home gym for the second straight night, the Spartans gave the Blazers a tough challenge on Wednesday. The visitors needed a plethora of extra serves to finally outlast the Spartans 31-29 in the first set. After a 25-18 setback, the Spartans won the third set 26-24. The Blazers regained momentum for a 25-16 win. Jordan Martin had 21 assists. Fisher recorded two aces and Dwight Weaver finished with six blocks. Lapp tallied nine digs. BASEBALL Aiden Bracken pitched six strong innings and sophomore Justin Petersheim picked up the save in a 3-2 win at Lancaster Mennonite on Monday. “Shrek” from pg 1 The stage show closely follows the plot of the 2001 DreamWorks film, in which a large, green ogre named Shrek, played by Lincoln Everett, finds his swamp taken over by fairytale creatures that had been thrown out of the kingdom of Duloc by Lord Farquaad, played by Noah Durling. Accompanied by a talkative Donkey, played by Josiah Henne, Shrek embarks on a mission to regain his swamp. In exchange for his swamp, he must rescue Princess Fiona, played by Audrey Pavlica, whom Farquaad plans to marry. As the adventure unfolds, Shrek and Fiona find themselves following a road they never expected to travel, resulting in comedy, music, and love. Fresh off his role as Colin in the Cavod Theatre production of “The Secret Garden,” Everett is working to perfect the role of the rough swamp dweller. “It has been a fun challenge for (Everett) to take away the grace and polish and be an ogre,” said Huyard. “We feel there’s a lot of growth (in this role), and … he is doing really well.” Henne was already somewhat prepared for his part as Donkey, having played an animal in a previous Cavod production. “(Henne) was Pumbaa in our ‘Lion King’ production,” said Huyard. “He has grown (as an actor) since then. His (acting) instincts on stage have really (matured).” According to Huyard, the material will offer a number of the students a unique acting experience. “There are these fantastic, crazy fairytale characters,” said Huyard. “(The show will) give the students a chance to step out of their comfort zone

and be something different than humans.” Huyard added that “Shrek The Musical Jr.” will provide challenges for a number of students because so many of the roles have moments in the spotlight. “Many characters have solos,” said Huyard, who noted that he loves the way the message of the story resonates with the mission of Cavod. “The whole story of ‘Shrek’ is that everyone is different and special and that should be celebrated,” he said. With the popularity of the 2001 DreamWorks film and its sequels, Cavod acting students ages 8 to 17 who auditioned for the show were familiar with the material. The cast of nearly 50 will be costumed by Jessica Horn in garb that suggests their characters, but will not make it uncomfortable to sing and dance. Makeup will be provided by Emily Johnson. “They have a big task in front of them,” said Huyard of Horn and Johnson. “I trust them.” Musical numbers that Huyard expects will be memorable will include “I Know It’s Today,” sung by the three females who play Fiona. “The young version (played by Emma Byrom), teenage version (played by Riley Fidler), and adult version of Fiona will all sing this song together,” he said. “I’m a Believer,” a pop tune audience members should recognize, will be part of the show, along with a song about Duloc that is a spoof on “It’s a Small World After All.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may be available at the door for a higher price.

Six students from Garden Spot Middle School competed at the 2019 Pennsylvania TSA State Conference held at Seven Springs Resort from April 10 to 13. They competed against hundreds of students from across the state in events showcasing their problem-solving abilities, design engineering skills, computer literacy, and teamwork. The Garden Spot students worked throughout the year to complete various TSA challenges and qualified to compete at the state conference under the guidance of advisers Keith Blackwell and Jonathan Long. At the conference, Aiden Durante placed second in the “PA - Snapshot” category. This event required each student to take an original photo and use computer software to replace the background with a completely different one in a way that made the transition seamless to the viewer. This year’s theme was “Light.” Josh Martin and Aiden placed second in the “PA - Digital Video Challenge.” This event required each team to create a twominute promotional video for the Seven Springs Resort. The team had 24 hours at the conference to film the raw footage and edit its product. In addition to eighth-graders Aiden and Josh, Garden Spot was represented by eighth-graders Adam Chernovsky and Ashlee Sadusky and seventh-graders Katelyn Davis and Ella Wilson.

The library serves more than 30,000 residents in five municipalities: Adamstown Borough, Brecknock Township, Denver Borough, East Cocalico Township, and West Cocalico Township. The new library, which will be located on the footprint of the VFW building located at 110 W. The library has been housed in its present location at 3000 N. Reading Road since 1998, when it was moved from the basement of the Adamstown YMCA. The Adamstown Borough leases the current space to the library for $1 per year. Each year, the Friends hope to raise $10,000 from the used book sale, but Evans noted that they often exceed the

from Bridge of Hope National for being the highest-performing program site in the network across both the U.S. and Canada. “We received awards for serving the most families and successfully helping families move into permanent housing,” said Hoffer. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) will again partner with Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the 12th annual Golf Outing, which completely benefits the nonprofit. “We have been supporting Bridge of Hope @ GSS for the past decade, impressed by the continued progress they continue to make in the lives of our neighbors,” said EPC publisher Jocelyn Engle, who spearheads the event. “We are passionate to benefit organizations that recognize the importance to provide wholeness to individuals and families in need of support.” In the past decade of the partnership, EPC has raised a total of $135,000, which has been directly used to provide rental assistance and case management services to the families in the Bridge of Hope program. “We recognize that our strong community can have a positive influence, not only financially but emotionally and physically, to provide assistance to our neighbors. EPC’s family of publications reaches throughout Lancaster and Chester counties, bringing communities together for good,” said Engle.

all women and children in the local community. From 2017 to 2018, its Permanent Housing Services program served 208 women and children, provided $87,792 in rental assistance to single mothers across Lancaster and Chester counties and helped 12 families graduate from the program, according to www.goodsamservices.org. The organization’s services include case management and goal planning, resource development, life skills and parenting support, mentoring/volunteer support and financial assistance for rent, utilities and transportation. In 2017, Good Samaritan Services took Bridge of Hope Lancaster and Chester Counties under its wing via a merger between the nonprofits. Both had the same mission but offered different services, so combining allowed them to be even more effective in accomplishing their goals. “As a result of the merger, families in our Bridge of Hope @ GSS program can now participate in our Matched Savings and Microloan programs,” explained Nate Hoffer, the CEO of Good Samaritan Services. “The Matched Savings program awards $600 and the Microloan program awards loans up to $2,500 to clients, which, when paid back, rebuilds their credit.” In October 2018, the Bridge of Hope @ GSS program was given several awards

The Legion Riders have been assisting the Sons of the American Legion in renovating the former Rainbow Room at the American Legion, which will allow for a pool table, darts, a shuffle alley, and a stage area in the downstairs area. The plan is for this to be finished and staffed by sometime this summer so the hours of operation can be adjusted. Visitors are welcome to stop by the Ephrata American Legion, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. For more information, readers may visit Facebook and search for “American Legion Post 429” or “Ephrata American Legion Riders Post 429.”
Ephrata American Legion Post 429 hosts a large Biker Breakfast on the first Sunday of each month from April to October. However, Post 429 has never had its own American Legion Riders chapter. In December 2018, the state issued the official charter to Post 429 so it could start its own American Legion Riders chapter. On March 21, the officers were officially installed. The American Legion Riders meet the first Sunday of every month at 12:30 p.m., and the group has a tent at the Biker Breakfasts. The Biker Breakfasts will continue to run this year every first Sunday through October.

be gathered in a booklet for all the members. The delicious-looking entries were spread over a table at one end of the room, and the members were abuzz with conversation, a setting more akin to a fellowship meal than a weight-loss group. The air of celebration encompassed more than the excitement over the competition. The evening was also a time to mark important milestones for members Lori and Andy Miller, who were named queen and king in their respective weight loss divisions in the chapter for their accomplishments. The group was celebrating Lori’s Century Mark, meaning that she has lost more than 100 pounds. Rita presented Lori with a number of gifts, including a bouquet of artificial roses in a variety of colors. Rita explained that each color of rose stood for a special thought. “Yellow roses are for joy and celebration … pink roses are for admiration,” noted Rita, who added that other colors stood for rejuvenation, energy and invigoration, and exultation. “We know your faith has been your help through and through,” said Rita, who also gave Lori a collection of 100 notes of encouragement for her to open daily for the next 100 days. Lori also received a shirt emblazoned with the words “Crafted in His Image.” Rita read the smaller lettering on the shirt for all the room. “The fine print says, ‘We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ so we can do good things that He planned for us all along,’” said Rita, adding, “We are very proud of you and want to celebrate this occasion.” Lori stated that she started attending TOPS two years ago at the end of January at the urging of her mother, who was attending a TOPS group in Rhode Island. “She knew I wasn’t feeling great, and she was worried for me,” noted Lori. “She would not let it go until I called TOPS.” Lori decided to join, feeling that the group would help her stay accountable. “I have learned things,” said Lori. “It’s encouraging. It’s friendship, and it keeps me honest.” By working with her doctor, Lori was able to set a weight-loss goal they both felt would be healthy for her. “When I first came, I would have been (thrilled) to get to a size 14,” Lori said. “But when I got rolling, I was learning and encouraged.” Eventually, Lori lost 105 pounds according to the TOPS scale. “Now I am a size 10, and I never imagined I would be this size,” said Lori. Andy began attending TOPS with Lori to be supportive. “It wasn’t an easy decision to come here,” Andy admitted. However, he liked what he heard at meetings, so he joined as well. “TOPS saved my life,” said Andy, who has now lost 65 pounds. Both Lori and Andy may be honored again as regional or even state winners when they attend TOPS Southeast Pennsylvania Region ARD (Annual Recognition Days) in Reading on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18. “TOPS promotes making heathy life style changes and choices in your eating and activities for a lifetime,” Rita noted. “We don’t promise quick fixes or promote unrealistic images. Instead, we focus on health.” She added that the environment of the meetings is intended to provide encouragement to members throughout their TOPS experience. “We can offer support through each stage of the journey,” she said, adding, “The meetings are part educational and cheerleading for making better choices. As our group slogan says, ‘We are each a masterpiece.’” Readers who would like to know more about TOPS may visit www.TOPS.org.

EPC Welcomes Industry Veteran As Sales Manager Jon Noel has been named sales manager for Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.’s (EPC) Advertiser, Merchandiser, Pennysaver and Community Courier weekly newspapers in Lancaster and Dauphin counties. Noel is a native of northwestern Pennsylvania and has a degree in journalism from Penn State. He has worked at daily and weekly newspapers in various-size markets over his more than 30-year career. “I’m excited to become part of the EPC family,” Noel said. “I’ve always had a great deal of respect for the company from my days as advertising director at the Lebanon Daily News. I think it’s amazing that we can tell our advertisers we reach well over 90 percent of the households in our market area, while at the same time smaller businesses can select the individual publications and even ZIP codes that will do the best job reaching their current and potential customers. I look forward to working with our knowledgeable and caring staff in forming partnerships and creating relevant advertising solutions for area businesses, including our rapidly growing website, TownLively.com.” Noel’s wife, Linda, is a native of Lancaster County. The Noels have four children and six grandchildren. Noel will succeed John Hemperly, who is assuming other executive roles within the company.

Will Be Non-Smoking Effective May 1, 2019
“This is our first Touch-A-Truck, and it’s a great fit for our mission,” said Becca Stamp, development and community relations coordinator with Hands-on House and one of the organizers of the first Hands-on House Touch-A-Truck fundraiser. “It’s a hands-on activity.” Hands-on House Children’s Museum of Lancaster, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, will hold Touch-A-Truck on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 12 trucks are lined up to be present in the Hands-on House parking lot that day. Attendees may park at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and they will be shuttled to the event. During the fundraiser, attendees of all ages will be able to view and touch a variety of vehicles. “We have (scheduled) a variety of vehicles that we are excited about,” said Stamp, who listed a fire truck, a police car, construction vehicles, a dump truck, a cement mixer, a garbage truck, a television truck, and a skid steer loader among those that will be present. “The Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) has a BearCat, and that is coming out,” said Stamp, who added that she thinks children of all ages will be excited to see the military-style armored vehicle.
One unusual vehicle that will take part in the event will travel from its home at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg to Hands-on House. “The VanGo! is coming,” said Seth Cluley, exhibits and creative director at Hands-on House. The VanGo! is a mobile art museum housed in a former motorhome. “The exhibit that is in it right now is all about optical illusions,” explained Cluley, who added that paintings and sculptures will be among the items found in the exhibit. Perhaps the most unique-looking vehicle at the Touch-A-Truck event will be the Hershey Kissmobile. Formerly a promotional vehicle for the candy company, the Kissmobile is now used for promotional community events. To nourish hungry visitors to the Touch-A-Truck event, Hands-on House has arranged for - what else? - food trucks to park alongside the other vehicles on display. “We will have a sandwich truck and a treat truck,” said Cluley. “We typically don’t have food here, but it’s part of the event, and it’s a truck.” Touch-A-Truck is a departure from past Hands-on House fundraisers. Cluley noted that the organization chose it after searching for an event that would appeal to a broad audience. Stamp added that she hopes the gathering will introduce families to first responders and others from around the county. “We
are looking at this as an opportunity for families to connect with our community and have a hands-on experience,” she said. There is a per-person cost to attend the Touch-A-Truck. Advance tickets for those age 2 and up may be purchased at www.handsonhouse.org. Children under the age of 2 will be admitted free. Tickets purchased prior to the day of the event will be discounted. Funds raised by the Touch-A-Truck will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located nearby along Landis Valley Road. In February of 2000, the museum moved to its current location and nearly doubled its floor space. Hands-on House is a nonprofit organization that exists to use play to create landmark experiences for children ages 2 to 10. Hands-on House will be open during Touch-A-Truck, and event attendees will receive a coupon for discounted admission to Hands-on House that will be good for one visit through Sunday, May 26. The Hands-on House Touch-A-Truck will be held rain or shine.

EPAC To Stage “Ragtime” Musical “Ragtime” will be presented by Ephrata Performing Arts Center (EPAC) from Thursday, April 25, to Saturday, May 11, at the Sharadin Bigler Theatre, 320 Cocalico St., Ephrata. Based on the 1975 novel by E.L. Doctorow, “Ragtime” is a musical about the dream and the reality of an America still striving to define itself, as seen through three different perspectives. “Ragtime” tells the story of Mother, who is living with her typical white upper-class family in New Rochelle;
Coalhouse Walker Jr., an avantgarde musician living in Harlem; and Tateh, a Jewish immigrant traveling with his daughter from Latvia to Ellis Island to the Lower East Side tenements. Despite their diverse backgrounds, all three will find their lives tied together. Along the way, they will also cross paths with Harry Houdini, Evelyn Nesbit, Booker T. Washington, J.P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Admiral Peary, Emma Goldman, and other famous historical figures of the time.
