Global experience without leaving New Holland
BY ANN MEAD ASH“(Night Around the World) is free for anybody to come,” said Julie Groft, coordinator of the Coordinated Health Council, an organization of Garden Spot High School (GSHS) that provides fun, educational, and healthy activities for the district. Night Around the World is an activity that introduces attendees to food, culture, and information about a large number of countries. The event is generally held every two years. It was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, and it was held in 2021 as a drivethrough event at GSHS.
This year, Groft said that organizers voted to hold the celebration of world cultures inside the school, 669 E. Main St., New Holland, on Thursday, May 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Area residents who attend are asked to enter through the doors at the back of the school where tickets are sold for sporting events. Activities will take place in the main cafeteria, auxiliary cafeteria, and the old gym. Arrows with a motif of the earth on
them will be placed on the floor to direct visitors to different locations where they may visit stations.
“Come in and eat,” said Groft, who noted foods from about 20 countries will be available in the auxiliary cafeteria. Countries represented by the cuisine will include China, Colombia, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, and Vietnam.
“In the main cafeteria, our exchange students are creating a ‘Just Dance’ video,” said Groft, who noted that the program uses Wii gaming system technology. About eight students, who come from a number of countries, including Spain, Germany, and Italy, have used songs from their countries to create the program. “It will be pretty cool,” said Groft, who noted that the students will also talk about their home countries and share what it has been like to be an exchange student at GSHS. A coordinator of a student exchange program will also be present to talk to attendees about what is involved in hosting an exchange student in the area.

A story that resonates love and grief
BY ANN MEAD ASHAfter Nancy Bieber’s father, Ammon Meyer, died, Bieber inherited a shoebox full of letters. The shoebox was stored in her attic, and it remained there until about 2015. “I had to discover what I had,” said Bieber. “At some point you have to sort through things.”
At first, she would only open a letter occasionally, but soon Bieber realized that the letters were keys to the life of her biological grandmother, Fianna, who had died of tuberculosis in 1915, leaving Bieber’s grandfather, Samuel, and two young children,
Serving the nations
BY ANN MEAD ASHAmmon and Leah. “I thought, ‘Oh, my goodness. What have I here?’” said Bieber, who noted that among the letters were some written by Fianna to Samuel before they married or from Fianna to Samuel while her grandmother lived at White Haven in Luzerne County. She also found postcards from her father sent to his mother when he was just 3 that read, “Dear Mama, I miss you.” For Bieber, who had not heard much about her grandmother while growing up, the letters were a treasure. “My grandmother died when my father was not yet 4 years old,” said Bieber. “His memories of her were small.”

“I grew up Amish in Strasburg,” said Lin Fisher, who noted that reaching out to places beyond that small community was always in her heart. “I wanted to go out to the nations … to be part of something bigger,” shared Fisher, who spent 10 years as a missionary working in a leper colony in India. On the return flight from India in 2015, she felt unsure about the future. “I thought, ‘What am I going to do now?’” said Fisher. “I felt the Lord give me the words ‘Do something.’ We can all do something.”
At first, Fisher felt directed to James 1:27, where Christians are instructed to care for widows and orphans, and she reached out to about four widows living in her Gordonville development. Eventually, the group included up to 50 widows meeting on occasion and taking “mystery” bus trips around the county.
She founded DOsomething Nations, focused on the mission to “Give. Feed. Clothe. Visit. Invite.” and in February of this year, Fisher learned of an earthquake that had occurred in the Middle East. She quickly contacted a friend from Petra Church in New Holland, See Petra Church pg 2
Knights make donation
CrossNet Ministries, represented by food and nutrition coordinator Amy Marburger (center) and director of development Carl Edwards (second from left) received a check from Our Lady of Lourdes Knights of Columbus Father John Schmalhofer Council 13451, represented by (from far left) John Henry, Gene Skulrak, Bill O’Neill, and Jim Futer. The funds were raised at a St. Patrick’s Party the Knights held. Our Lady of Lourdes also donated 1,697 pounds of food as part of a Lenten food drive. A similar Thanksgiving food drive will be held in the fall.
where she attends. The friend, who lives in Indonesia, provided her with the name of a missionary in the area of the earthquake. She texted and heard back almost immediately from the missionary Kurt Miller, who told her of a shed project that was underway to
provide housing for families displaced by the earthquake. “They have built more than 30, and they have enough money to build until we get there (in midMay),” shared Fisher, who hopes to raise $56,000 to build another 20 sheds and fill them with needed supplies to house 40 families. Fisher and 11 others will travel to the location to help build sheds, organize children’s camps, and move supplies until mid-June.

In a video Fisher has had produced for the effort, she notes that her mission is to bring hope in practical ways to those who have “experienced loss and trauma from the earthquake.” “Our vision is to bring hope again and that smiles and laughter would (erupt),” said Fisher. She asks area residents to commit to praying for team members or to adopt a family by funding a shed. “Each shed costs $2,700, and (another) $300 will fill the shed with supplies,” said Fisher. “I would just love it if people would rally together and adopt a family.” Fisher added that when the team returns, she hopes to hold an event for those who adopted families.

Bieber soon realized that her grandmother’s story might resonate with others. “It’s such a human story,” she said. “People identify with it. It’s full of love and … grief.” In response to that realization, Bieber has written “Fianna’s Story: A True Story of Love, Grief and Faith,” a book of nearly 200 pages that traces Fianna’s life from her birth to her engagement and marriage, the births of her children, and her struggle with tuberculosis. The book was published in 2020. Bieber will
give a multimedia presentation based on the book in the chapel at Garden Spot Village (GSV) on Wednesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. The presentation is free, and the public is welcome to attend.
Fianna’s world encompassed a small slice of Pennsylvania, including Lebanon County where she was born; Quarryville, where her father began a church; and northern Pennsylvania where she was treated for tuberculosis.

book so that Fianna and her family could tell their own story. “They wrote such beautiful letters,” said Bieber. “I quoted widely because I knew it would be much more effective in the words of the person who was there actually experiencing it.”
In addition to the letters, Bieber discovered artifacts that told her grandmother’s story, including report cards, a college bill, a piece of her grandmother’s wedding dress, and her bill from Elizabethtown College. “There was a lot
that I could build on, but I did a fair amount of research,” said Bieber, whose background as a psychologist, spiritual director, and previous author all helped in the effort. Bieber researched tuberculosis, White Haven, the train system that existed in the area in the early 1900s, and the structure of the German Baptist Brethren Church to which the family belonged. Boys’ lacrosse tops Spring Grove, Warwick
BY ARA GRIGORIANGarden Spot demonstrated consistency in Monday’s home match with Warwick in L-L League boys’ lacrosse action. The Spartans were coming off a 14-4 non-league win over Spring Grove Friday, April 14, and were able to bear down and limit the Warriors to four goals in a 7-4 triumph. The win improved the Spartans to 6-3 (4-2 league).
Ayden Naranjo dropped a hat trick for Spot while Jared Patton, who also had one assist, and Joe Bernek each scored twice.
Cole Leaman was a success in front of the Spartans’ goal, making seven saves. Leaman and Logan Hall each recorded saves in the win at Spring Grove
On offense, Bernek and Naranjo each poured in four goals with Naranjo assisting on two others.
Patton posted a hat trick and dished two assists. Logan Lessley also had two assists and scored once. Gabe Martin and Ben Keeport each tallied one goal.
SOFTBALL
Garden Spot faced a solid Donegal squad in LancasterLebanon League softball action on the road, Friday, April 14
How solid?
“I think they’re a complete team,” head coach Kim King stated. “They have a solid pitcher with good hitters behind her.”
King was referring to Donegal pitcher Cara Biesecker, who tossed three innings and allowed one run on five hits as the Indians topped the Spartans 16-1.
“We met the expectations of controlling what we could,” King said, alluding to the challenges the Spartans have faced this year - a roster that started the year with only 11 members.
“Bella Robbins had her first varsity hit,” King pointed out, demonstrating an example of how the Spartans have performed in the face of adversity.
“She has learned so much, not having played softball before.”
The Spartans scored their run on a Sydni King RBI. Violet Jackson reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on Courtney Reichard’s single. King, who had a single and a double on the day, drove her in.
“Violet has been putting the ball in play for us,” King said.
The game ended after three innings based on the 10-run rule. Donegal’s Bella Mackison went 3-for-3 with double, a home run and five RBI.
“They hit the ball very hard, and we had our infield playing back as far as possible,” said King. “We made the plays we were supposed to make.”
On Monday, April 17, Jackson had one of the Spartans’ four base hits in a Section Three game at Elco. The Spartans fell to the Raiders 15-0.
Jackson had one of the four
base hits. Reichard and King also singled while sophomore Rebekah Hoover slugged a double.
“We had four hits, but they weren’t strung together so we didn’t get any runs,” King said.
VOLLEYBALL
In a given season for nearly all sports, one or perhaps two teams will get off to a solid start. It is almost inevitable that the twain shall meet at some point during the season.
That was the case for the LL League clash between Garden Spot and Manheim Central on Tuesday, April 18. The Spartans visited the Barons as both teams entered the match with 5-0 records.
Two sets into the match - a 25-15 Central victory and a 25-19 Spartans win - and the teams were still tied for first place in Section Two.
The Barons would remain unbeaten at night’s end, winning a close 25-21 set and then 25-15 for a 3-1 defeat of the Spartans.
Tanner Laukhuff, a senior, crashed the net with 22 kills. Keegan Redcay led the team with 33 assists and two blocks while Justin Miniger recorded 22 digs.
As fortune would have it, these teams are scheduled to meet for their regular season finale.
TRACK
Monday’s track and field meets resulted in very close battles between the girls’ and boys’ squads of Section Two rivals Garden Spot and Lampeter-Strasburg. In the boys’ meet, the Pioneers topped the Spartans 82-68 in New Holland while the Spot girls posted an 80-70 win, improving to 2-1.
Sean Kelch raced across the finish line as the winner in the 400 (53.3). He was also part of the winning 4x400 relay team with Trent Hoober, Cole Humphreys, and Alan Krock (3:42.1).
Zechariah Nagle swept the hurdling events, taking the 300’s in 45.1 seconds and the high hurdles at 18.0 Garden Spot (1-2) won five of the field events, including multiple victories - the long jump and triple jump - by Aiden Durante. Jaden Rodriguez cleared 5-8 to win the high jump.
The discus left Landon Friedel’s hand and traveled a top distance of 125-9. Kaleb
Zimmerman won the shot put at 46-4.
In the girls’ meet, the Spartans swept the relays, including a 4x800 win for Morgan Watt, Melanie Esh Erin Hamer, and Elise Krock, who also went on to win the 800-m (2:39.7). They took the relay in 10:48.5 while Lauren Horning, who also won the 400-m race, anchored the 4x400 (4:29.3) team of Riley Arment, Megan Hechler and Kasey Miller.
Hechler came through with a sweep in the hurdles. Valerie Martin’s 9-foot pole vault was also tops on the day. Mikayla Mellinger as she won the triple jump at 33-3 and Chloe Grady claimed the long jump at 16-4.50.
BASEBALL
Sandwiched between a close heartbreaking 8-6 loss to Donegal on Friday, April 14 and a 10-0 defeat to Manheim Central on Wednesday, April 19 was the Spartans’ impressive 7-3 defeat of Elco at home Monday evening. Ryan Speers pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and only two walks, scattering seven hits.
At the dish, Madix Bracken went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a run scored. Caiden Murphy also stroked two hits and scored. Junior leadoff man Caleb Zimmerman slugged a solo home run and finished the day 2-for-4.
Seniors Gabe Smeltz and Colin Smith have almost always been very productive at the bottom of the lineup. Smith went 1-for-4 with an RBI while Smeltz knocked in two runs from the number nine spot.
Speers slugged a three-run home run in the Donegal game as the Spartans rallied in their final at bat. Trailing 8-3, Speers made it a two-run game with a homer to left field.
Brackin, who scored on the Speers blast, also had a homer in the game.
TENNIS
The Spartans faced Lebanon and Lampeter-Strasburg in Section Two tennis matches this past week, visiting L-S on Monday, April 17 and playing host to Lebanon two days later.
In the L-S match, which the Pioneers claimed by a 7-0 score, Walter Churpin and Gavin Zook played a tough number one doubles, losing eventually to Joe Fitzgerald
and Owen Lapp 8-2. The Pioneers won the four singles matches in straight sets.
The twosome of Jude Kauffman and Brandon Herman played a close second doubles in the Lebanon match, before bowing out 8-4.
Andrew Herman and Andrew Hershey came up just short in an 8-5 third doubles.
Brandon Herman played a much better second set in number two singles. The Cedars’ Bravlio Reyes prevailed 6-0, 6-3. At number four singles, Zook came up short 1-6, 4-6.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Spring Grove and Garden Spot met for a non-league
girls’ lacrosse match in New Holland on Friday, April 14.
The Rockets scored 11 firsthalf goals en route to an 18-7 victory.
Leading the offensive charge for Spot was Brielle Moyer with four goals. Gwen Varley tallied two goals while sophomore Frieda Kauffman netted one.
In its next contest, Garden Spot visited Warwick for an LL League game on Monday, April 17.
Powered by Julia Barto’s seven goals, the Warriors topped the Spartans 20-6. Varley had a four-goal game for Garden Spot. Moyer finished with two.

Big Hug Inc. will host its inaugural Pocketbook Bingo fundraiser at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, on Saturday, April 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Doors will open at 10 a.m. The event will include 10 games of bingo, two special games and giveaway drawings. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Space is limited to 200 bingo players. Tickets will be discounted when purchased in advance and full price at the door. To purchase tickets and for more details, visit www.bighuginc.org or search for “Big Hug Inc.” Information is also available by calling 717-299-5599. The proceeds from this event will go to feeding people throughout
central Pennsylvania over the coming months.
Big Hug Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to feed those who are homeless and hungry throughout Lancaster, York, Berks, Lebanon and Dauphin counties. The organization was started in late 2021 by Linda Than.
When Than was a little girl in Vietnam, she and her family would gather around the dinner table to share meals and stories of their day. Than came to the United States just over three decades ago, initially living in Washington, D.C., for a few months before moving with her family to Lancaster. During her time in the nation’s capital, Than saw many people who were homeless, and she felt a need to help. Big Hug Inc. is based on Than’s joy for cooking and caring for others, interests that came from her late mother.
Since Big Hug’s founding, Than has organized a five-person board of directors, which includes the Rev. Louis Butcher, former pastor of Bright Side Baptist Church. The board meets monthly and supports Than in her efforts to feed those in need.
Big Hug is seeking assistance from local churches and community organizations that have commercial kitchens and gathering space where Big Hug volunteers may prepare and serve meals on weekend days. Currently, two or three facilities per county are needed for this purpose. Thus far, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia has invited Big Hug
to provide its services one Sunday in June and another in August. Volunteers and financial contributions are sought, as well.
Big Hug has set a goal to feed more than 2,500 people before the end of 2024. Than also hopes to one day have a food truck that will allow her to take her mission into the streets, directly to people in need.
The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster has announced its spring concert series, “The Road Home.” Concerts will take place on select Sundays at 4 p.m. The
chorale will perform on April 30 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 W. Orange St., Lititz; on May 7 at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Road,
Neffsville; and on May 21 at Holy Spirit Lutheran Church, 3131 Columbia Ave., Lancaster.
“The Road Home” explores the idea that everyone is on their way home in myriad personal ways and that home is a place of warmth, solace, safety and love. Artistic director Barry L. Sawyer has curated a program of songs that celebrate the journey and the destination. Selected will include Stephen Paulus’ “The Road Home,” Eric Whitacre’s “The Seal Lullaby,” Gerald Custer’s setting of William Butler Yeats’ poem “Innisfree,” “Can-
tate Domino” by Giuseppe Pitoni, “O Love” by Elaine Hagenberg, “Esto Les Digo” by Kinley Lange, “I Beheld Her, Beautiful as a Dove” by Healey Willan, “Sure on This Shining Night” by Samuel Barber, “At the River” by Aaron Copland and “Good News, the Chariot’s Comin’” by Moses Hogan. Admission is free, and freewill offerings will be accepted. No reservations are required.
For more information about the Heritage Chorale of Lancaster, visit https://the heritagechorale.org/.
In the old gym, games, face painting, and other activities with international flair will be held. Stations will include a virtual reality experience. “(Attendees) can choose different countries to visit at that station,” said Groft. In addition, a coloring book featuring a page for each of a number of countries will be handed out to families. France, Germany, Ireland, and more countries are included, and pages bear line art of flags, maps, symbols, animals, and items related to the history of each place. Dancers from the Lancaster Liederkranz are scheduled to give demonstrations as well. The colorful flags of different countries will be on hand to view.
Groft noted that a grant from the Spartan Foundation is helping to cover food and materials for Night Around the World and that the foundation will have a display at the event.
The Health Council has up to 50 members, including select students, staff mem-
bers from every school building in the ELANCO district, and a school board member. The students learn teamwork and time management as they plan and hold events including a Mini Relay For Life and fitness challenges.

Students present Passion Play
The second-grade class at Our Mother of Perpetual Help School in Ephrata recently presented its annual Passion Play under the direction of second-grade teacher Beth Eberly. A long-standing tradition at OMPH School, the play depicts the last week of Jesus’ life, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. It is a tradition that helps to prepare the school community for the coming of Holy Week. The activity is also intended to give the students an opportunity to consider what Jesus endured in order to bring people the Easter message of everlasting life. WAA frompg 11
More than 2 million volunteers will come together on that day.
The goal for Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery Annex is to raise enough funds to place 373 sponsored veterans’ wreaths on the headstones of all the local heroes laid to rest there. The event is designed to help ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of the country will never be forgotten and to bring the community together in patriotic commemoration.
Those interested in volunteering for WAA or sponsoring a wreath for Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery Annex are invited to visit www.wreathsacrossamerica .org/PAFVDN to learn more. National Wreaths Across America Day is a free community event open to all people.
To learn more about local efforts, contact Sandy Flory at sandy@ptd.net or 717538-9299.
April designated as Grange Month
The Pennsylvania State Grange has proclaimed April as Grange Month. The observance is an opportunity for the Grange, an agricultural advocacy and rural service fraternity, to showcase the work being done by its members across the state and the country.
Since the Pennsylvania State Grange was established in 1873, it has emphasized the importance of service to the community. To celebrate its 150th anniversary, the Pennsylvania State Grange has asked local Granges across the state to carry out special activities and acts of community service.
Every Grange member is an advocate, and local meetings across Pennsylvania provide a forum to discuss opportunities to overcome numerous challenges. Topics of interest to Grange members include rural broadband; public notices and ensuring transparency; rural health care options; and the loss of prime farmland.
The Pennsylvania State Grange invites Pennsylvanians to join this organization supporting Pennsylvania’s agricultural community and beyond. To learn more, visit www.pagrange.org.
