From Uganda To New Holland BY ANN MEAD ASH

he outlook of Garden Spot High School (GSHS) senior Iyamuremye Habarurenye has been shaped by his family’s decision to emigrate from Uganda to the United States. “If you look objectively, there is much (we) can achieve if (we) start with principles,” he said. “There are opportunities (here) to get education and nutrition. There are ways to transform and make a difference in the society you live in.” Habarurenye noted that he often asks himself, “What can I do to be a positive influence in society?” Habarurenye began life in Uganda in 2003. His father’s decision to take his family to America took four years to become reality. “We came here in 2018, but the immigration process started in about 2014,” he explained, noting that Church World Service connected his family to resources that helped the newcomers find shelter and other necessities. Petra Church aided the family with rent in the New Holland area. Habarurenye became an eighth-grade student at Garden

T

Spot Middle School in the spring of 2018. His family in New Holland is made up of his parents and two sisters. Habarurenye’s father works at a local food production facility. Habarurenye works there as well and also at a fast-food establishment in addition to attending school. Habarurenye and his family had the advantage of speaking English before moving here. “My country was colonized by Great Britain,” Habarurenye explained, noting the English he learned is different from American English. “Once you’re in primary one (first grade), they start teaching you English and how to write (it).” In Uganda, the family lived in the village of Mukarange in the subcounty of Kyangwali in the Hoima District. Habarurenye recalls that life there was not easy. “In Uganda, I could accomplish all my studies and (graduate) and not have a job. The unemployment rate is so high,” he said. He added that health care services could use improvement. “My country loses more than 20 women a day giving birth due to poor medical facilities,” he said, adding, “My dad did not want to leave Uganda to go

abroad, but he decided for the future of the family and his children we should start the process.” Habarurenye enjoys his classes at GSHS. He mentioned that he especially likes studying history, but also environmental science, chemistry, algebra, and English. After graduating, he is considering attending Millersville University to study criminal justice and maybe later become a lawyer. “As a lawyer, I can advocate for things that need to be changed,” he said, noting that it is important to him to contribute to society. Habarurenye’s cultural experience has caused him to think deeply about the outlook of his generation. “I feel we need to come to a realization that … if you see someone struggling, you just can’t say, ‘That’s none of my concern,’” he said. “If we have a mentality of trying to help one another, we will be in a better place.” Habarurenye added that young people are the future of the country. “I want to encourage young people to get involved in leadership,” he said. “It’s important to find our mission. A generation that doesn’t have a mission is a failed one.”

Sandra Leonard, who formerly lived in New Hanover Township and Bedford County, is a Fairmount resident who is especially interested in genealogy. While researching her own family history, Sandra discovered important information about a Bedford

County woman, who came to be known as Indian Eve after being kidnapped by Native Americans. Sandra shared Eve’s story in a multimedia presentation to other Fairmount residents on Feb. 17. Sandra began her presentation by recalling her first day in seventh grade in 1955. Raised on a dairy farm in Bedford County, Sandra was excited to learn that she would be learning about Bedford County history that fall. Another girl in the class shared a story about Indian Eve, who was the girl’s great-grandmother several generations back. See Fairmount pg 3

Medicare questions. Volunteer Medicare counselors are needed for PA MEDI, a program run out of the Office of Aging at 150 N. Queen St., Lancaster. PA MEDI volunteers donate at least four hours weekly in private faceto-face sessions. Counselors answer questions about Medicare eligibility and enrollment, Parts A and B and Medigap benefits, Part D prescription drug plans, PACE and other financial assistance programs, Medicare Advantage Plans, and more. Skinner noted that volunteers will complete a training course of 10 online modules with testing. “Then there’s another online training (program) with the regional coordinator,” Skinner added. She noted that people who enjoy reading make good volunteers. “There’s a lot to know in Medicare,” she stated, adding that many retired people volunteer for PA MEDI. Computer literacy is a must, according to Skinner, who said that counselors come from all walks of life and that former teachers, nurses, and lawyers are currently volun-

teering. “These are people who have worked and want to continue doing something that utilizes their brainpower,” she said. “Often people who have retired need to have purpose.” Skinner said she would like to see more men join the volunteer force. Current volunteers JoAnn Irwin and Janet Foster both noted that their former careers aid them in their work with PA MEDI. Irwin, who worked in IT, said that the training and teaching she did when she explained a complex computer system to people has prepared her. “Medicare has a lot of crazy rules, and it’s intimidating for people, but my job is to break it down and make it understandable,” she said, adding that she loves the challenge of the work. Foster, who worked for an orthopedic surgeon, said that knowing the provider’s side of Medicare helps her help others. She also enjoys the sense of accomplishment. “It’s satisfying because you have people who just appreciate what you do,” she said. “You help them as best you can, and you see the stress lift.”

Insurance Assistance Program - SHIP,” said Skinner, who added that more than 50 SHIPs were offered across the state. She noted that nearly 760 people were served by the PA MEDI program in 2021. Readers who would like to volunteer may email kskinner @co.lancaster.pa.us or call 717-299-7979.

Skinner noted that the counselors offer a unique perspective to those they help. “We provide objective answers and comparisons of different insurance plans. We never point them in a direction.” The free counseling service has been available for more than 30 years. “(Sites) were established as State Health

father of her eldest son’s wife. She died in 1815, and her tombstone at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dutch Corner tells her story. Eve’s daughter Mary was taken in by a family named Imler following the Native American raid, and the girl came to be called Mary Imler. This led to confusion about Eve’s maiden name, but Sandra’s research uncovered her true origins. In closing, Sandra read 1 Corinthians 13, known as the “love” chapter, and compared Eve’s love for her children to the verses. “When I think of Eve’s life and all she endured, I think of this chapter,” noted Sandra. “Her life was showing that much love for her children by enduring all those things. That was Eve, and I am so honored to be carrying her DNA in my body.” Fairmount is a nonprofit retirement community located on two adjoining campuses in Ephrata. Sandra forgot about the story until 2007 when she purchased a book about Indian Eve and her descendants. While studying the genealogy section, Sandra realized she too was descended from Indian Eve. “She was my greatgrandmother eight generations back,” explained Sandra. Sandra went on to tell the tale of Eve’s life, including her birth as Eva Catherina Hellebart in 1740 near Philadelphia. “Her father’s name was George Adam Hellebart, and he had a large farm in New Hanover Township,” explained Sandra. Eve married Adam Ernst in 1757. The pair had several children and eventually settled on their own farm in Bedford County, where Adam was a weaver. In September 1777, Eve’s homestead was attacked by Shawnee Native Americans, and her husband and two neighbors were killed. Four of Eve’s children escaped, and she and her two youngest boys were captured and made to walk to Fort Detroit, which was held by the British. Eve was detained there until 1776. She and her two boys then traveled back to Bedford County on foot, arriving eventually at their homestead, where she found her eldest son with his wife and children. She was soon reunited with her other children. A year later, she married Conrad Sammel, the

LeeP Productions will present “Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns & Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” at locations across central Pennsylvania and beyond throughout 2022. “Then Sings My Soul” is an original musical presentation featuring professional vocalists as well as accompanists from the Lancaster area. Highlighting important moments in the Rev. Billy Graham’s ministry, it includes a look at the history behind over 30 wellknown hymns and songs of faith, many of which were made famous by or were written by people who accepted Jesus at Graham’s Crusades. Selections include “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” and “Amazing Grace.” The production also includes an old-fashioned hymn sing. “Then Sings My Soul” features Lancaster locals Daniel Gorham, Sarah Poague, Kat Prickett, and Ric Zimmerman. Katrina King, an 18-year-old New Holland-area resident, is the pianist. Now in its fourth year of touring, “Then Sings My Soul” premiered in August 2018 in a barn at writer and producer Prickett’s family business, The Red Caboose Motel & Restaurant in Ronks. It has since toured across Pennsylvania and New Jersey and to Dollywood Theme Park in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. The performers seek not only to entertain audiences, but also to educate them on hymns and their history, share the Gospel message, and honor Graham’s memory. In 2022, the program will travel to numerous churches, events and retirement communities in the Lancaster, York, Cumberland, Lebanon and Berks County areas, as well as the historic 6,000-seat Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, N.J., where Graham preached several times

Garden Spot Track Teams Battle Manheim Central

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

The Garden Spot boys’ track team has had a number of consistent performers. At home on Tuesday, April 19, two of these pictures of consistency helped the Spartans battle Manheim Central in a very closely fought battle. The Barons prevailed 68-64 as Garden Spot fell to 22 on the year. Finn Wenrich won the 200and 400-meter races. Alan Krock did what was asked of him. He not only ran the 800, 1600 and the 3200, he claimed first in each of these events. Gavin Lee Miller took first in the triple jump with a 40foot-7 measurement. The Garden Spot girls also came up short as Central won the Section Two meet 86-46. Melanie Esh won the 3,200 and Bryna Kelly took the high hurdles. Garden Spot fell to 2-2 on the year. SOFTBALL It was the old feast or famine situation for the Spartans as they pounded Annville-Cleona on Tuesday, in a game that had been originally scheduled for Monday April 18, and they lost to Twin Valley the next afternoon. The Spartans were already coming off a 16-3 victory the previous week at Lancaster Mennonite when they downed A-C 17-5. The win improved the team’s mark to 3-6 on the year. “We played very well,” said head coach Kimberly King. “It was an all-around team effort.” Weather conditions were not ideal as the players dealt with strong winds as well as some precipitation. “Once the winds slowed down a bit, we played better defense,” King quipped. “We also hit the ball and Kylie Weinhold pitched a good game.” The sophomore starter also helped her own cause, with two singles and three RBIs. Fellow sophomore Makayla Barr drove in two runs. “She had her first varsity hit, and it was a double,” King said. “She also had a single” Sydni King had a single, a double and two RBI’s. The big

bat of the afternoon was Amanda Hoover, the designated player who drove in four runs. “Amanda had a double and a single,” King noted. “We’ve been working with her at the plate, and she has been hitting the ball hard.” The Spartans had 10 hits on the day, but also took advantage of three Annville errors “We also drew a bunch of walks,” King said. One such batter in the lineup was Lindsay Lapp. The senior walked three times and scored all three times. In the 11-0 loss to Twin Valley - a non-league game at New Holland - the Spartans managed only one hit. “They were pretty much hitting it where we weren’t,” King ex plained. “They scored four times in the first inning. We kind of changed our thought and started pitching them inside. We were also making plays. They did not score over the next three innings.” The Raiders scored four more in the fifth and padded the lead thereafter. “ We made a couple of errors in the fifth inning, which hurt us,” King said. BASEBALL The baseball team also came up with 10 hits, facing Governor Mifflin in a nonleague road game on Thursday, April 14. The Mustangs held off a Garden Spot comeback and eked out a 9-7 win. As the top of the lineup goes, so do the Spartans. This

game was no exception as George Rohrbaugh went 2for-5 with two runs scored and one batted in. Caleb Zimmerman went 2-for-4 with a run. Caiden Murphy had two singles and two RBIs. He also stole a base. Joel Martin, Luke Steiner, and Colin Smith each drove in a run. VOLLEYBALL Manheim Central stunned the Spartans on their home court Tuesday, April 19 with a 3-0 victory. It was Garden Spot’s first L-L League loss of the year (5-1) as Lancaster Mennonite also improved to 5-1. The Spartans had beaten the Blazers 3-2 in an earlyseason match, the lone league loss for Mennonite. The Barons (4-2) opened with a 25-11 win but saw the Spartans make it a tight second set before the visitors managed a 26-24 win. Central wrapped it up with a 25-15 win. Tanner Laukhuff had 17 kills and six digs. Keegan Redcay had 22 assists. In the Spartans’ 3-0 defeat of Lebanon on Thursday, April 14, Redcay served up six aces and had a match-leading 31 assists. Garden Spot won 25-12, 25-9 and 25-10. K. Ezra Hubik poured in seven kills and Tyler Martin finished with nine digs and a block GIRLS’ LACROSSE The Spartans earned an 1211 victory over Warwick in girls’ lacrosse action on the

road Tuesday evening. This victory was five days following a thrilling last-minute win - yes, by the same 12-11 margin - over Lancaster Country Day/Lancaster Catholic at New Holland. The two wins evened the Spartans’ record at 5-5 (3-3 league). With six goals by Brielle Moyer already in the books in Thursday’s game, Gwen Varrley got her hat trick on that last second goal. She also had an assist. Gabriella Mansi and Emma Gruber had two goals and one goal, respectively, on the day. Olivia Scarle held back six of the Cougars’ shots to earn the win. In the Warwick match, Garden Spot came back from a 64 halftime deficit on the road to win it by one. The Warriors out-shot the Spartans 21-19 with Scarle making 10 saves. Another hat trick for Varley and one more by Gruber led the Spartan scoring. Moyer and Ashton Gonzalez each tallied two goals. Mansi (1g, 1a) Eden Nagle (1g), and Emily Ferris (1a) also contributed. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boys’ lacrosse team suffered a setback to a tough Lampeter-Strasburg team on Tuesday, April 19. The victory came one day following Garden Spot’s convincing 10-3 defeat of Elizabethtown. The Spartans (5-4) outscored the visiting Bears 71 in the first half of their win, launching 26 shots on goal. Jared Patton (4g, 1a) led the Spartans while Ayden Naranjo added a hat trick. Logan Lessley (2g, 2 a) also chipped in. Tanner Donahue added one goal while Ibon Ibanez and Armoni Slaymaker each notched an assist. Cole Leaman finished with saves in goal. In the 12-1 loss to Lampeter-Strasburg, Kane Leaman scored the one Spartan goal off a Lessley assist. TENNIS The Spartans hung in there against Lebanon on Tuesday, April 19. In the L-L League match, the Cedars earned a 52 win with the Garden Spot team points coming courtesy of Will Culbert and Cole King. The Spartan teammates played at number one singles

and number two singles with King winning the latter by 60, 7-5 straight sets and Culbert winning 6-1, 6-1. In the number one doubles, King and Culbert paired for a tough battle with Kameron Uffner and Adrian Cruz of

Lebanon, falling short 8-6. Kyle Petersheim and Ashton Nafziger lost 8-4 at second doubles. Nafziger was involved in an intense singles match also with Barvilo Reyes, finally winning 6-1, 4-6, 14-12.

The coloring contest is open to students ages 5 to 11 and will give young students the opportunity to create their own judge. After printing the cartoon judge cutouts, students can choose which judge they want to color and design using their creativity as their guide. The essay contest is open to all students in grades three through 12, with essays being judged on creativity, overall quality, and adherence to the questions. For grades three through five, the question is “ Why is the Pennsylvania Supreme Court important?” For grades six through 12, the question is “Which Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice inspires you and why?” Students and parents are encouraged to submit photo entries on Twitter by tagging @PACourts and using #Supreme300 or by mail following the instructions outlined below. To submit an essay entry or to learn where to mail it, email communications office@pacourts.us. Entries in both contests will be judged by Pennsylvania Supreme Court justices, along with members of the Supreme Court 300th Celebration Committee. Winners will be announced and recognized by the court during its 300th anniversary celebration in May. To access information about the coloring contest, visit https://bit.ly/PAcourts coloringcontest. Veritas Academy To Present Musical Veritas Academy, a private classical Christian school in Leola, will present the musical “Fiddler on the Roof Jr.” at Leola Elementary School, 11 School Drive, Leola, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, April 29 and 30, as well as at 2 p.m. matinee on April 30. This junior version of the award-winning musical “Fiddler on the Roof ” includes wellknown songs from the original like “Matchmaker,” “Tradition,”

and “Sunrise, Sunset.” The production has a cast and crew of 40 seventh- through 12th-grade students. Johnny Adkins, a senior, plays the poor Jewish milkman Tevye, father of five daughters in the 1900s Russian village of Anatevka. Tevye is a man struggling to maintain the tradition of his faith and family and provide for his children in the face of an ever-changing and at times hostile society. Playing Tevye’s three oldest

daughters - who each represent an increasingly progressive shift away from tradition - are freshman Meghan Spanjer as Tzeitel, freshman Lindy Harris as Hodel, and eighthgrader Greta Wenger as Chava. These three actresses have prior experience in the performing arts. The show is directed by Jaime Hilton, head of the Veritas Theater Department. This is the fifth production that

Hilton has directed for Veritas Academy. Kylee Bowman, director of communications at Veritas, noted that the musical’s themes align with one of Veritas’ core values - Tradition Affirming. There is a fee per person age 4 and up. Tickets are available by visiting www.veritasacademy .com/spring-play or calling the school at 717-556-0690.

Scouts Win Awards At Blue Ridge To Sponsor Baseball Camp, Klondike Sweepstakes

The Prospectors consisted of (from left) Andrew Herman, Declan Redcay, Logan Sheehan, Caleb Myers, Spencer Babb, Aaron Cress and Matthew Herman.

Terre Hill Boy Scout Troop 172 participated in the 2022 Susquehanna District Yukon Gold Rush Klondike event at Camp Mack, owned by BSA’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, over the weekend of Feb. 4 to 6. A total of 31 patrols from 20 area troops participated. Leading up to the weekend, Scouts prepared their gear and sled so they could work through 13 stations set up throughout the woods. At each station, Scouts were tested on skills and knowledge, such as fire building, first aid, knots, compass skills, and teamwork. Scouts could earn up to 20 points at

each station, along with bonus points for camping out on Friday night. Terre Hill sent one patrol, The Prospectors, to the event. The Prospectors won first place for its themed flag and its patrol spirit, as well as third place for its sled design. Adult leaders who helped with the event were Jim Leonard, Dwayne Leonard, Wayne Koppey, John Hansen, Barney Fitzwater and Chad Herman. To learn more about Terre Hill Boy Scouts, contact Scoutmaster Jim Leonard at 717354-0037.

Through the sweepstakes, Blue Ridge is offering five spots in five different camps/clinics throughout the summer. The Skills Camp, to be held from Tuesday, June 21, through Thursday, June 23, will allow youths to work directly with Barnstormers coach Troy Steffy. The Barnstormers Player Run Camp, to be held from Tuesday, July 12, through Thursday, July 14, will have youths working with the Barnstormers team.

The Evening Camp on Monday, Aug. 8, will give attendees the unique experience of working on baseball skills under the lights of the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium. Two Parent and Child Clinics have been scheduled to provide a true family experience where parents and their children will work together on skills.

To enter the Blue Ridge Baseball Camp/Clinic Experience Sweepstakes, visit www.brctv.com/barnstormers. The deadline to enter is Sunday, June 5. For questions regarding the sweepstakes, contact Cindy Mellinger at cmellinger@brctv.com or 717-733-6006, ext. 2551.
