Mentoring Makes A Difference BY ANN MEAD ASH
uring the first year that Bob Wenger of Terre Hill mentored a young man we will call Chris, he was not sure the volunteer effort he was making through CrossNet Ministries’ Community Mentoring Program would pay off. Chris, who was 12 at the time, was not exactly excited about having a mentor. “I am glad I hung in there when he was trying to walk away,” said Wenger, who has now been mentoring Chris for more than four years. Wenger and Chris were matched up by CrossNet mentoring and education director Charis Pankratz, who talks to each party, prays, and then brings the mentor and mentee together for an initial introduction. “We talk about the program and what is expected,” said Pankratz. Pankratz schedules monthly activities, such as scavenger hunts, for mentors and mentees. In the case of a minor, a parent or guardian is present at the meeting. Chris’

It costs Good Samaritan Services (GSS) $35 to provide a night of shelter, two meals, supplies, and compassionate care to an individual. That is about one-third the cost of a hotel per night. The Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club Ride for the Community raises funds for local and international needs.
Lancaster Sunrise Rotary Club president Don Holm has a relaxed attitude toward the organization’s annual fundraising ride. “We like to attract as many riders as we can and just have a good time,” said Holm of the ride, which raises funds for a number of community organizations enough for club members to give away $50,000 in scholarships; $25,000 in district grants; and $109,500 in community fund grants in the last five years. since June 1999. By 2002, GSS purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to provide five people at a time with emergency housing. Currently, GSS owns 14 properties, totaling 100 beds and over 30,000 square feet. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 when it opened an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, case management services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. Since July 1, 2021, GSS has served 475 people, and more than 200 individuals have graduated from the organiza-
tion’s programs and are in stable housing. Starting this year, GSS will offer its clients in-house counseling, and it will expand the women’s shelter in Ephrata. The organization also opened a men’s shelter in Ephrata on April 1. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 15th annual EPC Golf Outing will take place on Friday, June 10, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville, with tee times at 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Meals, beverages, and snacks will be provided, and participants will have chances to win prizes throughout the golf course. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to GSS. “Anytime anyone in the community is participating whether that’s through monthly donorship or coming to our events - they’re really making a difference right here in their own community,” said Mandy
Johnson, director of community engagement at GSS. “We’re so grateful because without the support, we literally couldn’t do the work we’re doing.” “We live in a great community, and it’s being made even better with what GSS does every day,” stated Rachel Stebbins, EPC marketing director. “The Golf Outing is a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors, meet some fellow
do-gooders, and help put a dent in homelessness!” Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, visit www.epcgolfouting.com. In addition, the club has partnered with The Common Wheel to accept quality, gently used bikes from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day of the ride. More information about the organization may be found at www.the commonwheel.com. Holm pointed out that funds have been used locally to aid high school students with continuing education. He noted that district grants allow a club president to choose a project to fund and that in 2021, that project was the Lancaster-Lebanon Education Fund to support IU13 students who needed learning materials to use at home. Other local organizations that have benefited include Aaron’s Acres, Byrnes Health Education Center, Love INC of Lancaster County, and Off the Streets Lancaster. At a March meeting of the club, a special grant was awarded to aid victims of the war in Ukraine. “We are doing a $5,000 grant to an organization in Budapest, Hungary, to help get money to Ukrainian humanitarian relief,” said Holm. The 2021 event attracted nearly 100 riders. Among the participants at Landis ADS is Joel. Joel formerly drove a tractor-trailer, sometimes hauling loads from Florida to Canada, and he also collected cars. When he was 1,000 miles short of reaching 3 million miles of safe trucking, he encountered a health problem that resulted in the loss of his license. Joel was not coping well with being home as he missed working and the open road. Eventually, his wife found Landis ADS, and Joel began attending and making friends. Pet Pantry Purchases Its “Furever” Home BY COURTNEY MENGEL
The Pet Pantry of Lancaster County started in 2011 as an animal food pantry that operated out of CEO Melody Sanders’ living room. As of March 2, the Pet Pantry now owns its “furever” home. The organization’s mission is to meet the community’s need for affordable animal care, which the Pet Pantry aims to accomplish through its three pillars: feed, fix, and rescue. Through its food program, the Pet Pantry serves about 250 local families by providing an average of more than 70,000 pounds of animal food every year. These families must meet certain
requirements that show they are taking responsibility of their animal by having them spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and, for dogs, licensed. Additionally, the organization offers low-cost veterinary services for dogs and cats. There is also a trap, neuter, and return (TNR) program through which feral cats are captured in a humane trap, brought into the Pet Pantry, spayed or neutered, then released where they were found. The organization also rescues animals and puts them up for adoption. Cats are housed on the property while dogs are fostered until adopt-

New Holland Alumni Plan Lunch New Holland High School alumni will gather for lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 18, at Yoder’s Restaurant, 14 S. Tower Road, New Holland. This will be the first gettogether for former students since before the pandemic. The Alumni Committee publishes a newsletter each year to keep in touch with classmates. This group’s school years include the 1940s and the 1950s.
ed. According to development director Lindsay High, studies have shown that fosterbased dog programs are better for a dog’s mental wellness. Individuals who foster the dogs get insight into the animal’s in-house behaviors and preferences, which is information unattainable in a shelter situation. “Our ultimate goal is to meet the need,” said Sanders. “We have redefined what it means to provide accessible, equitable animal welfare services to families throughout our community. When we founded the organization, we knew the need was great and each year since we have worked tirelessly to be a trusted resource in our community.” Every year the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County provides homes for an average of 400 rescued animals, serves 1,000 feral cat TNR surgeries, and offers over $250,000 in veterinary care. After bouncing around locations as the organization grew, the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County moved to its current location, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster, in 2014. Like cats, the building itself has had many lives. It was first a residential home, then it became a police station, changed into a real estate office, and currently accommodates the Pet Pantry. Due to the intended purpose of the structure, it is not ideal for the organization’s needs. High noted that the location has an odd layout with several ineffective spaces, but by purchasing the property, the organization can customize the space to fit its needs. The surgical wing will

To holistically meet the community’s need for animal care services, the organization plans to provide a free vaccine clinic this summer, a 100-cat TNR clinic this fall, and a holiday pet food drive in the winter. Red Cross Seeks Blood Donations The American Red Cross encourages community members to make blood or platelet donation a part of their spring plans. Donated blood has a limited shelf life, so supplies must be constantly replenished. Donors can make an appointment by downloading the American Red Cross Blood
Donor app, visiting www.red crossblood.org or calling 800733-2767. To donate blood, individuals need to bring a blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification. Individuals who are age 17, weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in generally good
health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors age 18 and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements. Donors can also save up to 15 minutes at the blood drive by completing a RapidPass. With RapidPass, donors complete the
pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online on the day of donation from a mobile device or computer. To complete a RapidPass, follow the instructions at www.red crossblood.org/rapidpass or use the American Red Cross Blood Donor app.

Tenfold CEO To Resign, Successor Announced
Mike McKenna
R082552
Shelby Nauman
Tenfold has announced that its chief executive officer, Mike McKenna, plans to resign, effective May 27, so he can focus on serving his family as a stay-at-home dad. McKenna has led Tabor and then Tenfold for a total of more than three years. The board of directors, with McKenna’s support, announced that Shelby Nauman, chief impact officer of Tenfold, will be the organization’s next CEO. Jeff Scheuren, chair of Tenfold’s board of directors, noted that the past two years have included the merger of Tabor Community Services and Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) to form Tenfold, in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic and innovations of Tenfold’s services. McKenna, Nauman and the entire Tenfold team will work together to ensure a smooth transition. Tenfold will also begin the process of hiring a new chief impact officer. With 80 years of collective expertise, Tenfold offers a broad continuum of services to address homelessness, affordable rental housing, homeownership, and the creation of new housing units through Tenfold Community Lending.
