Cruise In For A Cure BY ANN MEAD ASH

hen Sharon Groff, captain of the Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team, held the first Cruise In for a Cure Car Show in 2021, she knew an outdoor event would be a wise choice. The response was positive. “Last year, we had more than 150 cars show up,” said Groff. “I got emails saying how well organized it was.” Now, Groff is hoping lots of area residents will attend the second Cruise In for a Cure Car Show, which will be held in the Terre Hill Community Memorial Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Saturday, May 21. In addition to the car show, Groff has lined up crafters, vendors, and food trucks, and DJ Timbo will provide music. Groff has scheduled the craft and vendor show to open at 8 a.m. For this year, crafters will sell jewelry, cupcakes, homemade soaps, items for bird lovers, and more. Vendors will include

The car show will open at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Cars and Jeeps will be awarded prizes in three categories, and motorcycles and trucks will be eligible for firstand second-place awards. Car owners and spectators will have opportunities to vote for cars. A special best in show award, dubbed “Misfits’ Choice,” will be

selected by Relay For Life team members. Hungry attendees will have lots of options to choose from, as Groff has lined up a number of food trucks to attend, including the Crazy Train, offering a variety of hot dogs; Schaeffer Catering, offering breakfast foods, egg rolls, grilled cheese sandwiches, and fries; and Lickity Split, selling ice cream. All funds raised by the event will go to the American Cancer Society. Auction For Ronald McDonald House To Return

BY ANN MEAD ASH

BY ANN MEAD ASH

When Michael Leader, a longtime member of the board of directors of Ronald McDonald House in Hershey, wrote to Moses Smucker of Narvon in January of 2008, he was asking for help. Leader knew that Smucker had organized the auction for the Nicholas Stoltzfus House project in Wyomissing, and he was wondering if Smucker would lend his talents to a similar event for “a very good cause.” See Auction pg 3

The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans became an affiliate of the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association.

On April 20, a gathering of about 50 was held at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA). The group included ULTWMA members; members of the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans, an organization that makes and donates blankets for veterans in hospice care; representatives of local hospice associations to which the Stitchers contribute blankets; and special guest speakers Liz Ackerman of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, See Patriotic Stitchers pg 6

Ronald McDonald House provides services free of charge to families of children being treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital. In 2008, the house required a $4 million expansion, which would add 15 rooms for a total of 35. The Plain community of Lancaster County had utilized the house often, and Smucker responded to Leader’s letter by holding a meeting at his house in March of 2008. The first Lancaster County Community Auction to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania was held on May 2, 2009. After a two-year hiatus, the 12th Lancaster County Community Auction will be held at the White Horse Fire Company, 111 White Horse Road, Gap, on Tuesday, May 24, beginning at 11 a.m. The traditional country “bring something, buy something” format will feature quilts, antiques, toys, crafts, garden items, furniture, quilts, and more. Smucker noted that several sheds and DeWalt tools will be sold. Food for purchase at the auction will include chicken barbecue meals and pulled pork sandwiches, along with a variety of other foods. Over the decades, Ronald McDonald House, located within walking distance of Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, has served countless families. Once the facility was expanded in 2010, the auction committee agreed to shift support to operations of the house, explained Amy Leonard, development director with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Pennsylvania. Leonard noted that the house is slowly reopening following the lift-

Meet Eden! This senior lady is available to be adopted from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. She came to the shelter as a stray and now is longing for a new life of luxury. Eden still has plenty of energy and enjoys walks and playing fetch in the yard. This lovely gal doesn’t like other dogs, but she adores every human she meets. Eden is hoping to find her furever home soon because shelter life doesn’t suit her. If interested in adopting Eden, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-9176979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

Meet Ben! This 6-month-old boy is available for adoption from the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center after finding himself at the shelter again. Ben takes some time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he is incredibly loving; his favorite activity is headbutting and begging for scratches. He might be a little spicy at times, but he enjoys the finer things in life, like sunbathing, batting around toys, and harassing his people! If interested in adopting Ben, call the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center at 717-917-6979 or email lancaster@pspca.org.

Training is one of the most important ways to keep companion animals safe. When prospective pet owners begin looking for a new dog, one of the first thoughts that may come to mind is trainability and whether certain breeds are more easy to train than others. The pet food manufacturers at Honest Kitchen indicated that breed is just one of many factors that can make a difference in how easily a dog will be trained. For example, dogs that are food-motivated and enjoy being around people may be more easily trained than those without such traits. How the animal was bred, raised and socialized can also play a part. The American Kennel Club reported that certain dogs are more willing to comply with owner requests, while others are bred to work independently and may be less likely to immediately respond to commands from their owners.

Though there is no guarantee any dog will take to training, the following are some breeds that are generally considered training-friendly. - Border collies: Collies are bright and energetic dogs that like to herd with their agility and intelligence. - Australian shepherd: Another herding dog, Aussies have a natural focus on their owners and are bred to work with those owners in challenging environments. - Doberman pinschers: Dobermans are smart and attentive to their owners. They have traditionally been employed as guard dogs and require careful training and socialization to be tolerant of strangers. - German shepherds: These workhorses serve many different roles because of their affinity for learning tasks. As with Dobermans, look for a well-socialized German shepherd to avoid anxiety and wariness of people. - Poodles: Poodles are popular because they do not shed much, but also because they are intelligent, obedient and versatile. - Golden retrievers: Golden retrievers are not known as a family dog for nothing. Goldens are very intelligent and amiable, and they often will go to great lengths to please their owners. Labrador retrievers also take to training well and are very affectionate. - Papillon: Smaller dogs are often viewed as stubborn or independent. However, papillons are incredibly smart and trainable and are naturally focused. The pet advisement site K9 of Mine warned that some of the smartest, most trainable dogs may not necessarily be the easiest to live with. They can get bored easily and destroy things around the house if they cannot keep their minds occupied. This is a factor to consider when selecting a breed as well.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Keith Greiner, and Diane Absher of the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists (NSDAC). The gathering was held to celebrate the third anniversary of the Patriotic Stitchers and the organization’s becoming an affiliate of ULTWMA. Kathy Baker and Jean Summers, who have overseen the Stitchers’ work, took turns opening the event, with Baker leading the Pledge of Allegiance and offering a prayer and Summers noting that the organization has now donated 1,100 blankets to veterans. Ackerman coordinated a special ribbon-cutting, noting that the organization will now be known as the Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans of the War Memorial Association. Mary Lawhead, volunteer coordinator for Caring Hospice Services, shared stories of vet-

erans who have received blankets, noting, “The blankets bring a profound and wonderful security to the veterans.” Carol Vandenburg of Hospice & Community Care described a pinning, a special ceremony of the We Honor Veterans program. She noted that a blanket from the Stitchers is draped over the veteran’s bed. Vandenburg’s associate Jen Horan gave the Patriotic Stitchers a pin and a certificate emblematic of the Starfish Award. “It’s for volunteers that go above and beyond,” she explained. Amy Roth Sandrolini, volunteer coordinator with Amedisys hospice of Lancaster, told the story of a local veteran who received a blanket resembling an American flag made by Darla Carpenter. Sandrolini held up a similar blanket with 13 stars, saying, “This is a work of art … a

The Ephrata Cloister Chorus is actively seeking talented singers to join the group. The chorus performs concerts regularly in the Saal, the historic meetinghouse at the historic Ephrata Cloister, and by invitation at nearby colleges, churches, museums, and social organizations. It also takes part in concert tours to other states and Europe. Formed in 1959, the Ephrata Cloister Chorus sings hymns written in the 18th century by the members of this unique, historic community. The music is sung a capella, as instructed by the community’s founder, Conrad Beissel. The chorus also performs other early American music, including pieces from the Shaker, Moravian, shapenote, and spiritual traditions, as well as classical and some modern works. The chorus welcomes everyone to join. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Ephrata Cloister Visitor Center. Parents with young children visited the Lancaster Barnstormers’ Fan Fest a bit early on April 16 for an opportunity to teach their children a lesson about the importance of saving money. It was part of the Ephrata National Bank (ENB) Pigs in the Park program designed to turn little ones into lifelong savers. During the event, ENB hid hundreds of piggy banks within the stadium for children to find before gameday activities began. Any child ages 2 to 12 who found a piggy bank was invited to take it to an ENB branch and have money deposited into an ENB Super Saver savings account in his or her name. Children were able to keep the banks and may continue saving for something special, making regular deposits into their savings accounts. Pigs in the Park events will continue at community parks throughout Lancaster, Chester and Lebanon counties on eight Saturdays throughout the summer. Pigs in the Park events will include the following: Saturday, May 21, Thomas P. Grater Community Park, Cloister Ave., Ephrata; Saturday, June 4, New Holland Park, 400-498 E. Jackson St., New Holland; Saturday, June 18, West Nantmeal Park, 455 N. Broad St., Lititz. All events will be held from 9 a.m. to noon. Children and their families are welcome to search for the piggy banks during the allotted time or while supplies last. Spot Volleyball Posts Third Straight Victory

BY ARA GRIGORIAN

Garden Spot’s boys’ volleyball team posted its third straight 3-0 victory, improving to 8-2 in the LancasterLebanon League. Coming off a shutout at Ephrata early last week, the Spartans returned home on Thursday, April 28, for a match with Section Two rival Elizabethtown. The Bears made it a close second set with Garden Spot pulling off a 26-24 win. That set was sandwiched between 25-13 and 25-16 Spartan wins. Tanner Laukhuff’s 10 kills, seven digs and two blocks helped lead the Spartans. Tyler Martin distributed 29 assists while Josh Martin served up two aces. Tuesday’s match at Cocalico was an intense 3-0 win - not as dominant as the score indicated. The Spartans soared past the Eagles 25-20, 26-24 and 27-25. Laukhuff put down 17 kills while Tyler Martin assisted 38 times. Keegan Redcay added two blocks and three aces. SOFTBALL Spartans’ softball coach Kim King is ecstatic about the way her squad has been playing lately. What does it take to win softball games? Defense, timely hitting and/or plenty of hard hitting, good pitching, heads-up base running etc. The hitting became infections in the Spartan’s recent games, which also included a thrilling extra inning win. “We’ve been playing pretty solid defense,” said King. “Even when we make an error, we have been picking ourselves up and staying focused. “In the past three games, we’ve been hitting the ball hard,” continued the coach. “And it has been finding holes. I’ve been telling the girls good things happen when you make contact. “Plus, people have been having really good at-bats especially with two strikes,” she added. “We had a whole practice about two-strike hitting.” On Friday, April 29, the Spartans exacted some revenge on Cocalico with a 122 victory. “We went from losing to

them the first time to beating them at home,” King said. Kylie Weinhold pitched five innings in the mercy rule game. She didn’t allow any walks and struck out three. At the plate, Rebecca Hoover stroked a double and a triple, driving in three runs. Sydni King had two hits, including a double, as she drove in two. Lindsay Lapp had two singles and scored twice. What else do you need to win? Oh yes, good defense. “We actually had a triple pay in this game,” said the excited coach. “Our right fielder caught the ball and the girl on second tagged up. Our shortstop threw the ball to third base [for the second out] and the third baseman threw back to the shortstop to tag the runner from first.” Monday’s game was also a 10-run game that ended in six innings. King had a single and a double with two runs batted in. Leadoff hitter Emma Royle had two hits and a run. Rylee Manning drove in three runs while fellow sophomore Makayla Barr had a double and two RBI’s. “We have been seeing really good at-bats from her,” King said of Barr. Elco tied the game with two runs in the seventh inning of Wednesday’s game. The Spartans, after an Elco error and a solid single by Royle, scored the winning run on an errant throw to third base. Final score, 7-6. For Royle, it was her third hit of the day. She had two RBI’s and one run. King had a double and two RBI’s. Nikky Zeiset stroked a triple. “Their pitcher was throwing hard,” King said. “She beat us 9-0 when we played them first. She gave up only one hit.” Weinhold went the distance for Garden Spot, escaping threats multiple times (11 hits). The Spartans improved to 6-10 (6-8 league). TRACK The Garden Spot girls’ track team improved to 3-3 with an 87-63 defeat of Section Two rival Solanco on the road, Monday, May 2. Nicole Kelch was part of the winning 4x400 and the 4x800 relay

teams, joining Kailyn Miller, Megan Hechler and Lauren Horning in the former whereas she ran with Morgan Watt, Melanie Esh and Elise Krock in the 4x800. Bryna Kelly was a multiple winner again, taking both hurdling events as well as the high jump. Julia Hoover ran the 1,600-meter race at a winning pace while Lucy Stern’s triple jump and Ainslee Binkley’s javelin toss gave Garden Spot two more first-place finishes. The boys fell to 2-4 despite some tremendous efforts in their 93-58 loss. Finn Wenrich did everything that was asked of him, winning the 100- 200- and 400m events in addition to running in the 4x400 winning relay with Angel Rodriguez, Joel Benedick, and Sean Kelch, who also went on to win the 800m race. Alan Krock came through again with the 1,600 and Zechariah Nagle won the 300 hurdles. In the field events, Gavin Lee Miller’s triple jump and Kaleb Zimmerman’s discus were both first-place efforts. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The Spartans won a wild 16-15 match at Cedar Crest on Tuesday, raising their league record to 5-6 (8-8 overall). With five goals and an assist, Ashton Gonzalez paced the Spartans while Brielle Moyer poured in four goals. Gwen Varley and Gabriella Mansi each netted two goals. Single goals came off the sticks of Skylar Hynson, Jane

Umbel, and freshman Freda Kauffman. Abigail Commander saved 10 shots in goal. Moyer, Varley, and Emma Gruber each scored four times in the Spartans’ 13-10 victory at home over Elizabethtown on Friday. Gonzalez scored one while goalie Olivia Scarle compiled 12 saves. BASEBALL It was a heartbreaking loss for the Spartans on Monday, May 2, in extra innings at Octorara. The Braves scored the winning run in the home half of the eighth inning to steal a 4-3 win. Garden Spot led 3-0 until the bottom of the seventh when the Braves rallied to tie the score. Caiden Murphy had an RBI double as well as a stolen base on the day. He also scored on an RBI single by Evan Myers. George Rohrbaugh and Caleb Zimmerman each had a hit and a run scored out of the top two spots in the batting order. Josh Tudor ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh inning after six shutout frames. He was charged with the Braves’ first two runs. He struck out eight and allowed only four hits. BOYS’ LACROSSE With an impressive 17-11 victory on Monday, May 2, the boys’ lacrosse team evened its record at 7-7 on the year. The victory over Conrad Weiser came three days following a 13-5 setback at Lancaster Country Day. Gavyn Naranjo notched a hat trick in that loss while

Tom Andress and Zane Fisher each scored once. Naranjo had four goals and an assist in the Conrad Weiser match. But it was Jared Patton’s six-goal game (2a) that led the way while Logan Lessley put up a hat trick. Also in the scoring columns were Nick Gleason (2g, 1a), Armoni Slaymaker (1g, 2a) Kane Leaman (1g, 1a) and

Reed Gruber with one assist. Cole Leaman had 13 saves in the win. Spot suffered a 10-4 loss at home to Conestoga Valley on Tuesday. It was a 6-3 game until the fourth quarter where the Buckskins scored four goals. Patton posted a hat trick for Spot. Slaymaker added one goal.
