United Veterans Council Slates Memorial Day Pilgrimage BY ANN MEAD ASH
he cancellation of last year’s Memorial Day Pilgrimage, a local tradition, was heartbreaking for organizers Alan Noll and Mike Martin. So heartbreaking in fact, that a small delegation representing the United Veterans Council of New Holland went forth to the locations reading a prayer and observing a moment of silence. “This started in 1922,” said Noll. “It’s our 99th year (in 2021),” added Martin, president of the United Veterans Council, who added that this year “everything is back to normal.” This year’s pilgrimage will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31, with members of the United Veterans Council, which includes representatives from the New Holland American Legion, the New Holland AMVETS, and the New Holland Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), organizing the event. Those joining in the pilgrimage are invited to gather at the American Legion Hall Post 662, located at 35 S. Hoover Ave., New Holland, at

Veterans living in the area are invited to join the delegation and take part in the event. The public is also encouraged to attend each ceremony. As in the past, the delegation will visit area cemeteries, beginning with Ranck’s United Methodist Church at 7 a.m., followed by Cedar Grove Presbyterian at 7:15 a.m. and Bridgeville Evangelical Congregational Church at 7:30 a.m. From Bridgeville, the group will journey to Weaverland Mennonite Church at 7:45 a.m., Bowmansville Memorial Park at 8:15 a.m., and St. John’s Center Lutheran Church at 9 a.m. The group plans to arrive at Terre Hill Memorial Park at 9:15 a.m., followed by Voganville Cemetery at 10 a.m. The pilgrimage will continue to Groffdale Cemetery by 10:20 a.m. and Zeltenreich Reformed Church at 10:40 a.m. The group is scheduled to reach the Evangelical United

“Our club is a neat thing,” said Lori Stahl of the Lancaster County Beekeepers Society. “We have been around since the mid-1800s.” Stahl noted that at one time the organization changed its name to the Lancaster Honey Producers, but in the early 2000s, it was restored to the original name. “It has always been about beekeepers mentoring new beekeepers and being advocates for the honeybees,” she explained. When Sharon Groff, captain of the Misfits on a Mission Relay For Life team started thinking about a spring fundraiser, she knew she wanted to hold an outdoor event. “Everyone is tired of being cooped up,” Groff pointed out, adding that the park event will allow for social distancing and that masks can still be utilized for more protection. The Cruise In for a Cure Car Show, which will be held in the Terre Hill Community Memorial Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill on Saturday, May 22, will include not just a car show, but also crafters, vendors, and a number of food trucks. Music at the event will be provided by DJ Timbo. Groff has scheduled the craft and vendor show to open at 8 a.m. Among the many items vendors will sell will be both jewelry and homemade jewelry, sweet treats, popcorn, items made from gourds, and wreaths. Home-based businesses that will be represented will include Tastefully Simple, Norwex, Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, and Usborne Books. Car show registration will open in the pavilion at 8:30 a.m. There will be a nominal fee to take part in the car show. The car show will open at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. Cars and Jeeps will be awarded prizes in three categories, and motorcycles and trucks will be eligible for first- and second-place awards. Car owners and spectators will have opportunities to vote for cars. A special best in show award, dubbed “Misfits’ Choice,” will be selected by Relay For Life team members.
In addition, a Chinese auction featuring items donated by vendors and crafters will be held. To feed hungry attendees, Groff has arranged for a number of food trucks to be on site. Schaeffer’s Catering will offer breakfast foods, along with eggrolls and several types of grilled cheese sandwiches. The Crazy Train, which will sell a variety of hot dogs with fixings, will be present, as will Hen House Grilling, Grape Leaf Café, and Fink’s french fries. Lickity Split will offer ice cream creations for purchase. All funds raised by the event will go to the American Cancer Society in memory of New Holland police officer Wendell Met-

of seeing the world transformed by Christ through the work of coaches and athletes. In the four years since FCA came to Lancaster County, the group has created huddles led by students at schools throughout the region, including Garden Spot, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor and Manheim Central. “I’ve seen at Pequea Valley the growth that occurs because the huddles are student-led, versus me coming in as an adult,” said Adam Burns, area representative for FCA. “It’s
inspiring watching them encourage and equip their fellow students.” Burns said one of the best things about Power Camp has been the lasting impact it’s had on campers. “Many of the campers from our first camp have now become huddle leaders,” he stated. “I’ve had campers who, as soon as camp ends, say, ‘We can’t wait to sign up for next year.’” For more information on Power Camp or to register, visit https: //lancasterfca.org/camp-2.

Kids, get ready for “a week of inspiration and perspiration.” That’s how the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) describes Power Camp, a coed four-day sports camp for children ages 8 to 12. The Lancaster FCA will host Power Camp at two locations this summer. From Monday, June 14, through Thursday, June 17, camp will be held at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland. Sport choices at the New Holland camp are basketball, field hockey, soccer, baseball or lacrosse. Camp will also be held from Monday, June 21, through Thursday, June 24, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road. Sport choices in Manheim are basketball, volleyball, soccer or baseball. Each camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and lunch will be provided. “It’s a great camp for kids to try a sport for the first time, under the supervision of quality coaches,” said Diana Roth, area representative for
FCA. “You don’t have to be the best athlete or be super competitive. It’s just a way to try a sport and have fun.” This is the third year the camp will be offered in New Holland and the first year for the camp in Manheim. “Our goal is to eventually have four Power Camps at different regions in the county,” Roth noted. Christianity is the focus of the camp, which includes worship time as well as devotions. This year’s camp theme is ‘Pursue,’ which comes from 1 Timothy and encourages fleeing from evil to pursue a godly lifestyle. “It’s a fun-filled camp,” Roth remarked, adding that whole-group friendly competitions in things like Minute to Win It games and Dance Dance Revolution are featured, along with guest speakers. The camp also has an outreach component. “We ask the girls and boys to bring in coins, and it’s a competition to see who can bring in the most to raise money for our partnerships in Southeast Asia,” she explained. Founded in 1954, FCA has a goal

Additional snack items will be included as well when available. The program is open to students ages 1 to 21 who are registered and attending school in the ELANCO School District and who are eligible for free and reduced-cost school lunches. Marburger noted that the organization is grateful to the community organizations that help the program with donations, including Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and Yoder’s

More than 75 total volunteers and staff are needed to pack lunches, deliver the meals to pickup locations, and pick up donations. For the past 11 years, volunteers have organized the Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament indoors in January at Lancaster Mennonite School. This year, due to COVID19, the event is moving outside. The tournament will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 9 a.m. on Lancaster Mennonite School’s soccer fields on Millstream Road, off Lincoln Highway East (Route 30). The rain date is Sunday, June 13. Past years’ tournaments were limited to 40 teams, and organizers had to turn away teams. This year, there is no maximum number of teams. The tournament is named after Glen Lapp, a 1987 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School. He played volleyball at Eastern Mennonite University and coached at Lancaster Mennonite in the ‘90s. In 2010, Lapp and nine others were killed while providing free medical assistance in a remote area of Afghanistan. The volleyball tournament honors Lapp’s life and passion for volleyball. Organizers described the May 29 event as a cross between a fair and a mud sale. Both 5K and 10K runs will be held beginning at 8 a.m., and a volleyball tournament will take place during the day. More information on registering for these competitions may be found at www.blessings ofhope.com. Four different auctions will take place during the day, and food items will be available for purchase for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, along with a drive-through food option. In the evening, a bydonation concert will be held. Blessings of Hope was started in 2006, when Lapp and Fisher began using a garage in Farmersville to store and redistribute food that was being wasted and that they knew could be used to feed people in Lancaster County and beyond. Eventually, the ministry developed relationships with more than 80 food producers and began acting as a bank to collect and redistribute food to pantries, outreaches, halfway houses, and ministries, along with Hands of Hope food box distributions.

To help give beginning beekeepers a sweet start, the organization normally holds a one-day workshop in late January or early February. According to Stahl, past events attracted about 100 attendees, with another 100 fledgling beekeepers on a waiting list. This year’s event was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Stahl said that the organization hopes to hold the 2022 event. Another service the organization offers is swarm retrieval. Swarms occur when a hive divides itself. “The queen and a bunch of the bees leave,” said Stahl. “(Bees) swarm anywhere between April and October, but the bulk happens in May,” noted Stahl, displaying photos of swarms she retrieved during 2020 on her phone. “A typical traditional swarm looks like a big ball of bees.” The organization’s website www.lancasterbeekeepers.org provides a list of swarm collectors

The website also offers informational documents under the “Members” tab, including an article on designing a garden for pollinators. Stahl recommends that gardeners plant flowers that bloom in February, March, early April, August, September, October, and November. “When it’s the end of April, bees can find nectar and pollen everywhere,” she explained. She also encourages allowing some clover, violets, and even dandelions in the green landscape of the lawn to create pollinator islands. Stahl said that putting out water

She noted that if one is stung accidentally, it is wise not to grab the stinger. “Use a fingernail to flick the stinger up and away,” she said. “If you squeeze, you (are injecting) the venom into you, but by flicking you remove the whole thing.” In addition to the website, information about the society may be found by searching for “Lancaster County Beekeepers Society” on Facebook.

The group holds a short ceremony at the grave of the last veteran buried at each site. If family members of that veteran are present, they are given a geranium to place on the grave as part of the ceremony, which involves rifle fire and the playing of taps. The veterans’ delegation will meet at 11:50 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial, located at the corner of East Jackson Street and South Kinzer Avenue, for a brief ceremony. At noon, the group will join the band in the park to hear a presentation by Larry Alexander, retired journalist and military historian. Both Noll and Martin expressed gratitude for being able to hold the event again. Members of the United Veterans Council would like to see younger veterans involved in helping to preserve the tradition of the pilgrimage. Spot Tracksters Cap League Season Against Bears
BY ARA GRIGORIAN
The Garden Spot girls’ track and field team fell to 2-5 on the year following Monday’s 85-65 loss to Elizabethtown in a Lancaster-Lebanon League meet on the road. The boys’ team improved to 1-6 by beating the Bears 94-56. Bryna Kelly was again among the leaders for the girls’ team, claiming first in both hurdling events in addition to winning the high jump with a 4-foot-8 jump. “She’s a junior and has been a leader for us all year - hurdler, relay teams, and high jumper,” said Spartan’s head coach Lei Williams. “She has the fastest time in the league for the 100-meter hurdles with 15.3 seconds.” She also won the 300-meter hurdles at 47.6. “That was a personal best,” Williams noted. In that race, Avery Stauffer was second at 49.4. Stauffer would go on to take second in the long jump with a 14-5 jump. Lauren Horning earned first in the 400m with a time of 1:04. The Garden Spot 4x800 relay team won in 10:49 with Cloe Martin, Nicole Kelch, Julia Hoover and Kaleigh Watkins as the winning foursome. Kelch also took second in the 800m (2:35.2) while Martin won the 3,200 (13:38). Angela Nuse was third in the 100m dash with a 13.5 time. Melanie Esh took third in both the 1,600 (6:03.3) and the pole vault, with a 7-foot effort. In other field events, Chloe Grady had a busy day, taking first in the long jump (14-9) second place in the triple jump (29-6) and third in the high jump (4-6). Logan Martin finished second in the javelin with a 106-11 heave.
“Logan Martin has been one of our leaders in javelin and discus,” said Williams. “She and Christy Martin have thrown the javelin over 100 feet.” Kupa Agbokah and Alex McFalls were the leaders in the boys’ meet. McFalls was part of the two Garden Spot winning relay teams - the 4x400 (3:44.2) and the 4x800. In the 4x400 Agbokah and McFalls were joined by Zech Nagle and David Rodriguez. In the 4x800 McFalls anchored the team of Joel Benedict, Tom Watt and Jaxon Kulp for a winning time of 11:21.0. “Alex is a 400 and 800 runner,” Williams said. “ We’ve had to practice in pods because of COVID - sprinters, distance runners, jumpers, and throwers. Alex has been a leader in the distance group. He’s always willing to run whatever race we need him to run. He’s a senior, so we’ll miss him next year.” McFalls Alan Krock and Zane Kauffman claimed first through third place, respectively in the 1,600m race with times of 4:52, 4:54 and 4:55. “We swept the 1,600, 800 and shot put,” Williams said. “That’s 27 points right there.” In the 800, McFalls posted a winning time of 2:10.7 while Krock (2:11.2) and Kulp (2:11.5) took the next two places. Austin Worley, Kaleb Zimmerman and Luke Nagle were the top three in the boys’ shot put. Worley’s toss went 38-3 while Zimmerman (35-7.5) and Nagle (338.5) rounded out the sweep. “Kaleb Zimmerman is only a sophomore,” Williams said. “We expect great things from him in the next two years.” Agbokah, the 100m winner (11.4) also claimed the 200 (23.8) while Finn Wenrich placed second (24.7). Kauffman was first in the 3,200 (11:21.0) and Watt second at 11:53. Tristin Sadowski’s 5-11 high jump was good for first while he earned third in the long jump (17-5). Gavin Miller was second
in the long jump at 18-2. VOLLEYBALL With the end of the regular season within reach, the Garden Spot volleyball team earned a huge Section Two victory at Lebanon on Monday evening. The victory kept the Spartans unbeaten (11-0) and as if a dramatic ending of a scripted finish, set up a season finale with the second-place team in the section - the 10-1 Manheim Central Barons - for Wednesday, May 12. As it turned out, the Spartans swept the Barons 3-0 on Wednesday to clinch the section title by a two-game edge. The Spartans won by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-18. Laine King poured in 13 kills against Central while Tyler Martin led in digs with 15. Both Chandler Xxiong and Griffin Witmer registered two blocks while Jordan Martins served up three aces. In the Lebanon match, the persistent service game and front-line execution by the Spartan hitters helped Garden Spot eke out a 26-24 win in the first set followed by consecutive 2518 victories for a 3-0 win. King racked up 11 kills. Jordan Martin distributed 26 assists and
registered three blocks along with Joseph Sharp and Witmer. Tyler Martin had a team-high 11 digs while Xiong served up five aces. BASEBALL Garden Spot suffered a 3-2 loss at Northern Lebanon on Monday. The Spartans’ late rally fell short as they plated one run in the top of the seventh inning. Ty Stanley doubled and scored one of the Spartan runs. Joel Martin also had a double as the Spartans managed five hits on the day. The Vikings scored two in the bottom of the third inning. Right after the Spartans had trimmed that lead in half with a run in the fifth, the Vikings made it a tworun game again, answering with one run in the bottom of the frame. Justin Petersheim reached base twice on walks and stole two bases. He scored the other Garden Spot run. Starter Josh Tudor suffered the loss, pitching four innings and allowing just one earned run. Mason Graybill had two quality innings in relief, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three. Garden Spot fell to 3-13 on the year (2-9 league).
Petersheim homered in the Spartans’ 6-4 victory over the Elco Raiders on Wednesday evening. He finished with two hits, two RBI’s and three runs scored. George Rohrbaugh went 2-for3 with two runs and an RBI, slugging one of two Garden Spot extra-base hits - a double. Evan Myers drove in three for Spot. Graybill went the distance,
scattering 12 hits and allowing only one walk in the complete game victory. SOFTBALL Garden Spot fell on hard times, losing back-to-back league games in Section Three softball action this past week. With a 9-6 loss at Elco on Thursday, May 6, and a 12-2 loss at home to Northern Lebanon, the Spartans fell to 7-9 (7-8 league).

“It will be fun having a full summer after last year,” said Bente Weaver, production manager of Cavod Academy. “We had to cut back a little bit last year.” Weaver is referring to the changes that were made in 2020 in order to keep campers and community members safe during COVID19 restrictions. This year, Cavod, which was founded with the vision of raising the standard in godly artistic expression, will hold three summer programs at Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, with one camp held at the Junction Center in Manheim. Circus Spectacular Camp will be held in New Holland for children ages 3 to 6 and 7 to 12 from Monday, July 5, through Friday, July 9. Camp for 3- to 6-year-olds will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, and camp for 7- to 12-yearolds has been set for 1 to 5 p.m. Camps will include dance, tumbling and acrobatics, art, and music. On July 9, each camp will hold a closing performance. Camp Create is specifically designed for teenagers and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The camp, which is for those age 13 and up, will run from 4 to 6:30 p.m. each day from Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 6. The camp will explore creativity through
dance foundations, music, and theater. Each student will create an art masterpiece. The camp showcase will be held on Friday Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. Two musical theater camps have been scheduled this summer. “Into the Woods Jr.” camp will be held at Cavod from Monday, July 12, through Friday, July 23, with performances on Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25, at 2 and 7 p.m. “Singing in the Rain Jr.” camp will take place at the Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim, from Monday, Aug. 2, through Friday, Aug. 13, with performances at the Junction Center on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 14 and 15, at 2 and 7 p.m. The camps are designed for students ages 10 to 18. Cavod will also hold a Summer Dance Intensive on Monday through Friday, July 26 through 30. Classes for beginners age 7 and up will take place at Cavod Academy from 9 a.m. to noon, and classes for intermediate/advanced dancers age 12 and up will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Classes will include ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and musical theater jazz, taught by professionally trained teachers from the surrounding area. Fire Department Posts Car Show The 38th annual Antique and Classic Car Show sponsored by the Weaverland Valley Fire Department will take place on Sunday, June 6, at the Terre Hill Community Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, rain or shine. This event is one of the larger annual fundraisers for the Weaverland Valley Fire Department, which has stations in Terre Hill and Goodville. Admission is free to spectators. Participants may show cars in 17 classes, each of which will be sponsored by a local business. Popular vote will determine the winners of the firstthrough third-place cash awards in each class. Classes will include one for cars, trucks and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old, but are interesting and are potential future classics. Another is for vehicles that have been judged by the Antique Automobile Club of America and have scored first place in the Juniors or Seniors category. Additionally, the fire company staff will determine the winner of the Weaverland Valley Best of Show award. The winner will receive a prize package and trophy, and his or her vehicle will be featured on next year’s dash plaque. On-site vehicle registration will take place from 8 to 11:30 a.m. The first 100 registered show vehicles will receive a dash plaque. Each attendee will receive one ballot for voting. Voting will end at 2 p.m., with winners announced at approximately 2:30 p.m. The winning vehicles will be paraded to the stage area to receive their prizes. Breakfast and lunch will be available at the kitchen in the large pavilion from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. New this year, an ice cream truck will be parked near the pavilion. The event will also include door prizes, craft and flea market items available for purchase, and more. The park has a playground area and a newly added electric vehicle charging station. For information on how to preregister a vehicle by Sunday, May 30, and any other details, call 717-445-4581. A discount is available to anyone who registers in advance. Additionally, craft or flea market vendors may call the aforementioned number for information on registering for 10-by-20-foot spaces.
