37th Antique And Classic Car Show Planned By Ann Mead Ash
Harold Kilhefner will bring his nearly 20-year-old red Audi TT to the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, for the 37th annual Antique and Classic Car Show to be held there on Sunday, June 2, beginning with car registration at 8 a.m. The car will be entered in class 16, one of 17 classes that are sponsored by local businesses. “Class 16 is for cars, trucks, and motorcycles that are not yet 25 years old,” explained Kilhefner. “It’s a 2001, and it’s unique and different, which makes it perfect for a class like that.” The first six classes are devoted to antique cars ranging from 1900 to 1994. Categories for street rods and street machines are included, along with a couple classes for Camaros, Firebirds, Barracudas, Javelins, and Mustangs. Corvettes, trucks, motorcycles, and
farm tractors will each have a class, and an open class will be designated for vehicles built from 1985 to 2019. Class 17 is for AACA (Antique Automobile Club of America) Seniors. “(This class is) for vehicles that have been judged typically at Hershey or some other AACA event,” explained Kilhefner. “They have been judged to a high standard.” Rather than bring in judges to examine that variety of cars, the event will provide each registered car owner with a ballot to vote on his or her favorites. “Everyone votes for everything, and that has worked out really well,” said Kilhefner. Representatives of the Weaverland Valley Fire Company will choose a single car to receive a Best of Show trophy. In 2018, Craig Brossman’s 1971 Mustang Mach 1 received the trophy. “This year there will be a prize packet for the Best of Show,” said Kilhefner, who added that winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. See Car Show pg 11
Looking forward to the 37th annual Antique and Classic Car Show are (from left) Irvin Redcay with his 1956 Fairlane Victoria, Craig Brossman with his 1971 Mustang, Harold Kilhefner with his 2001 Audi TT, and Richard Shuker with his 1930 Ford Model A. The show will be held in Terre Hill Park on June 2.

According to Samuel Mwangi, a licensed addictions counselor, all addictions are centered in the brain of an individual. “It’s about stimulation of the brain, and it’s a matter of learning different skills for each person depending on their situation,” said Mwangi. “Drugs (of choice) come into play from a physiological perspective, but we (at CCARS) deal with addiction as a whole.” Mwangi is the lead counselor at CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and See CCARS pg 12

SCORE from pg 1 “These organizations, and the people running them, represent some of the best small businesses the Lancaster-Lebanon area has to offer,” said chapter president Bobb Bewley. “We are so fortunate to have them in our community, and we here at SCORE are honored to have worked with them as mentors.” SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon has 71 volunteer mentors who provided 2,668 mentoring sessions, along with 89 workshops and roundtables, and worked with 646 new clients in 2018. When Clint Krushinsky presented an
award to Monica Rakoczy of EnterTRAINING Solutions, he said, “SCORE helps businesses improve and make them the best they can be.” Rakoczy concurred, relating a story of tragedy avoided because a worker recognized unsafe trenching from a worksite safety seminar she provided. Mentor Jerry Glenn helped Rakoczy develop her training business, and she was recently asked to speak at Con Expo in Las Vegas, which is a dream come true. Joshua Wood of Foxduck - his 3-yearold daughter supplied the company’s name - credited SCORE for the screen-printing

Moon shared that SCORE mentor Hugh McMaster helped him with the practical aspects of establishing and growing a business, but McMaster also provided crucial emotional support as well. “‘You have tremendous value to bring to clients,’” Moon reported McMaster as saying. “Those examples pushed me through self-doubt.” In 1996, Leigh Lindsay inadvertently started a theater in an art studio. In 2018, that theater, Zoetropolis, moved into a new space and is in the final stages of opening a restaurant. “We are so grateful for SCORE,” said partner Matt Hostetter. “Mentor and ‘business dad’ Lou Davenport provided us with courage to keep with our passion project and get this far.” St. Cyr, who will be the next chapter president when Bewley’s term concludes this year, presented SCORE’s first community partner award to Heather Sharpe and Katie Basile of the Duke Street Business Center. He noted that during the first meeting clients have with SCORE, they are directed to meet with Basile and learn about the center’s resources. In closing, Bewley remarked, “SCORE Lancaster-Lebanon is proud to help you fulfill your vision and goals. If you’re inspired and want to be a mentor or donate, contact us.” For more information, readers may call 717-397-3092 or visit www.lancaster .score.org.
company’s success. “SCORE cared about our mission as much as we did,” Wood said, noting that the mission and process were solidified by meetings with mentor Eric Parker. “We will continue to utilize SCORE services because it’s an outstanding resource.” Lebanon Valley Exposition Center & Fairgrounds (LVECF) was the longest-running entity to receive an award. The organization was started in 1970, and in preparation for its next 50 years, the board of directors began developing a strategic plan and a direction for the future. Kevin St. Cyr mentored executive director Patrick Kerwin, who is LVECF’s only full-time employee, and he helped the board of directors develop mission and vision statements. “Thanks to SCORE and our strategic plan, we feel well-prepared to enter the next half-century,” Kerwin said. Millersville University (MU) president Daniel Wubah presented an award to Kurt Moon, who created STR Resources & Associates. “One of the reasons Lancaster is a special place is because of the interconnectedness,” Wubah said, demonstrating this by giving a shoutout to Foxduck co-founder Rebecca Wood, who is studying business at MU. Wubah also announced that MU has a new initiative in process, that of developing a mentorship office reminiscent of SCORE’s work, but for students.

To officially kick off the summer season, the Brandywine Health Foundation (BHF) will present its 47th annual Strawberry Festival on the grounds of Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health, 201 Reeceville Road, Coatesville. Festival dates and times are Thursday, May 30, from 5 to 10 p.m.; Friday, May 31, from 5 to 11 p.m.; Saturday, June 1, from noon to 11 p.m.; and Sunday, June 2, from noon to 6 p.m. A fireworks display will take place on May 31 at 9:45 p.m. The event will feature an international food fair, carnival rides, live music and magic shows, a mechanical bull ride, a rock wall, a zip line, a vendor fair and more. The festival’s popular strawberry shortcake will also be sold throughout the event. On May 30, the festival will begin at 5 p.m. with wristband night in the Majestic Midway. Those who purchase a wristband will be offered unlimited amusement rides that evening. Discounted ride tickets will also be sold on June 1 and 2 to be used from noon to 2 p.m. on the day of purchase.
For youngsters age 6 and under who visit the festival, Strawberryland will again return, offering moon bounces, an inflatable obstacle course and inflatable slides. Purchasing a wristband will allow children to bounce and play all day. There will be appearances by wellknown children’s characters. On June 2, the Strawberriest Kid Contest will begin at 2 p.m. Parents may bring their child up to age 5 dressed in a strawberry outfit. Prizes will be awarded. “New to the festival this year will be a second dining tent located near the vendor area on the pavement. This will better accommodate handicapped individuals, noted Strawberry Festival event coordinator Carol Collins, a BHF staff member. “The Brandywine Hospital - Tower Health will have a free rock wall (throughout the event) and also will be hosting a dance contest on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. The Chester County Food Bank will have a cooking demonstration on Saturday, and the Honey Brook Food Pantry will also have a demo on Sunday. When asked about the most
popular part of the festival, Collins replied, “Strawberry shortcake is No. 1. She explained that in the final hours before the festival begins, Senior Circle volunteers at Brandywine Hospital will begin capping fresh strawberries for the strawberry shortcake served at the festival. “The shortcake is topped with vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries and whipped cream, Collins said. Collins and the festival volunteer organizing committee, led by Randy Scott of Coatesville and Carlyle Holling (also known as the Strawberry Lady) of Chester Springs, work throughout the year to plan the event. “The Strawberry Festival started in 1972 at the former Coatesville Hospital on Strode Avenue and has always been held on the (hospital) grounds, Collins pointed out. “The festival has grown into the fun-filled four-day event that it is today. Approximately 25,000 to 30,000 people attend over the four days.
Parking will be available adjacent to the festival grounds. It is free to enter the festival, but there will be a nominal donation to park collected by the Thorndale Fire Company. A free shuttle service will be offered from 5 to 11 p.m. on May 31 and June 1 from Kmart, 3205 Lincoln Highway, Thorndale. Unless there is a threat of high winds and lightning, the festival is a rain-or-shine event. For more information, readers may visit www.Brandywine StrawberryFestival.com or www .facebook.com/BrandyStrawFest and find the festival on Twitter and Instagram. The Strawberry Festival benefits the BHF, which provides grants to local nonprofit organizations that “promote health equity, healthy youth and a healthy community. The foundation has distributed more than $17.5 million in grants since 2001. More information about the foundation is available at www.brandywinehealth.org.

CCARS from pg 1 eastern parts of Lancaster County. CCARS opened in Conestoga Church of the Brethren (COB), 141 E. Main St., Leola, in early April. A dedication service on April 9, was attended by members of the Conestoga Valley Ministerium, Conestoga COB, and Carpenter Community Church, where Mwangi is a pastor. Mwangi is a graduate of Lancaster Bible College and a board-certified addictions counselor with 13 years of experience in the field. At CCARS, Mwangi endeavors to provide professional services in an atmosphere of Christian love and compassion. He is certified by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), an international board that promotes uniform professional standards and quality assurance for alcohol and drug treatment professionals. Appointments may be made at CCARS on Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mwangi, who is licensed to treat all types of addiction in men and women ages 15 to 65, described two types of treatment that will be offered by CCARS. The first type is outpatient treatment, which usually involves a one-hour individual session and a two-hour group session each week, in accordance with client needs. The second type is called intensive outpatient treatment. Mwangi said that intensive treatment includes multiple group sessions in addition to an individual weekly session. By the middle of April, CCARS had done 11 assessments and was treating 10 patients. Mwangi hopes to have his wife, Gladys, who is also a licensed counselor, join him with a client caseload in the future. To ensure best practices, CCARS is supervised by Dr. David Byler. According to Conestoga COB pastor Jere Cassel, housing the CCARS office in the church is a ministry opportunity he had been on the lookout for since arriving at the church in 2013. “In 2017, we had our first addiction workshop at the church, and that went really well,” said Cassel, referring to a two-part workshop titled “Heroin Epidemic - It’s in Your Community. It’s in Your Congregation.” “The congregation seemed to really appreciate their facility being used (in that way),” Cassel noted. More forums were held with different speakers, including Mwangi. “In the process, Samuel said, ‘Wouldn’t it be good to have a licensed addiction counselor in this area?’” recalled Cassel, who added that the church had space available in a handicapped-accessible facility. In September 2018, about 18 months after Mwangi first asked the question, the church body gave its final approval for the office to open. Cassel noted that CCARS plans to offer counseling and support groups for families and for issues related to addiction as well. “Addiction is just the primary diagnosis,” explained Mwangi. “Once people enter treatment, they may have marriage or other issues, and we can address the family needs and parenting issues as well.” Mwangi noted that anger management treatment will also be available. “A long line of emotional issues are tied to addiction,” he said. Cassel is encouraged to see the area churches coming together to fight the problem of addiction. “This shows the community that Christian churches can work together and function well,” he said, adding that the Conestoga Valley Ministerium has been supportive of the effort to establish CCARS. Readers who are interested in learning more about CCARS may call 717-296-8181.

Young Historians Spotlight Set Two young historians engaged in cutting-edge research will present their findings at 7 p.m. on Monday, June 3, at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. The Young Historians Spotlight presentations will cover Quaker prison work in Northern Ireland and Mennonites in the United States reckoning with the Civil Rights movement. Ashley King will present “Peace and Prisons: Quaker Efforts in Addressing Penal Affairs in Northern Ireland 1971-1989.” She will
examine the activities of Quaker organizations in Northern Ireland in their efforts to address issues of penal affairs during the Northern Irish Troubles (1971-1989). Alex Loganbill will present “A New Responsibility: The Awakening of the Mennonite Social Conscience During the Civil Rights Era, 1950-1965.” In 1950, Mennonites gathered at a historic conference in Winona Lake, Ind., to attempt to square contemporary Christian social ethics with their own twokingdom theology in a post-war America. These commitments were
promptly tested when the Civil Rights Movement thrust racial injustice to the forefront of the American consciousness. The event is free and open to the public. The Young Historian Spotlight is a collaboration of Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, Mennonite Church USA Archives, the Young Center for Anabaptist and Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College, and the Sider Institute for Anabaptist, Pietist, and Wesleyan Studies at Messiah College. For more details, readers may visit www.lmhs.org.

LancasterHistory Slates Programs LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster, will host various upcoming programs. Unless otherwise noted, registration and fees apply. For more information or to register, readers may visit www.lancaster history.org. “Buchanan’s America: A Nation Divided,” a new orientation film, will debut on Saturday, June 1. The 22-minute film will become a centerpiece of the visitor experience for everyone touring Wheatland, Buchanan’s home. Guided tours will follow the viewing of the film. “Tips for Container Gardening” will be next in the Tanger Arboretum Nature Series on
Tips For Traveling With Pets Many pet parents choose to include their four-legged companions in their travel plans. Bringing pets along can reduce the hassle of finding a pet sitter or a boarding service. Traveling with pets in tow also can be enjoyable for the entire family, including pets. Perhaps that is why a recent study from AAA and Best Western International found that more than half of American pet owners take their cats and dogs with them when they travel. Traveling with pets can be fun, but it means taking some extra steps when planning a trip to ensure pets are safe and content. Before hitting the road or soaring into the sky, pet owners should consider the following tips: · Acclimate the pet to the car.
June 1 at 10 a.m. Chris Abel, Lancaster County Master Gardener, will lead the program. Registration will be free for members of the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum. The next African American Heritage Walking Tour will take place on June 1 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Tours will depart from the Lancaster City Visitor Center, 38 Penn Square. Tickets will be available on the day of the tour. “The Realization of a Beautiful Dream” will continue Living History at Wheatland on June 1, with tours at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Queen Victoria and Harriet Lane will be portrayed.
Conduct a trial run with your pet in tow to gauge how it handles a car ride. Start with shorter trips and build up. Assess how the pet reacts so you can make adjustments if necessary. · Get a wellness check. Visit the vet prior to departing, particularly if you will be traveling far or abroad. Pack an updated copy of health and immunization records, as well as proof of ownership of the pet. Some countries require pet passports. Investigate if the destination country requires quarantine of the animal. · Buy a quality pet carrier. Be sure to have a secure and comfortable pet carrier for your dog, cat, or small animal. This can make travel safer for the animal. If flying, you may need to purchase an
airline-approved crate. Mark the crate with identification information and contact numbers. · Pack a pet-friendly kit. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests bringing along food, a bowl, a leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow. Bring along bottled water as well. Drinking unfamiliar water can upset pets’ stomachs. · Book direct flights. A direct flight reduces the likelihood a pet will be kept on the tarmac or spend even longer times in the baggage hold of the plane. A petsonly airline might be a good choice as well. For example, Pet
Airways offers climate-controlled cabins outfitted with individual crates, and a flight attendant checks on the animals every 15 minutes. After landing, pets are given a bathroom break. · Reserve pet-friendly lodging. Many hotel and motel chains now offer pet accommodations, and some provide pet-friendly rooms. There may be specific requirements, such as restricting the pet to a crate when unattended. · Make sure microchip data is current. Log into the service that coordinates with the pet’s microchip. Check to see that your address and phone number are current. Consider adding temporary travel contact data so the pet can be reunited with you if it gets lost at your destination.
