Garden Spot

Great expectations

WhenGarden Spot High School (GSHS), 669 E. Main St., New Holland, graduates more than 225 members of the Class of 2023 on Wednesday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium, three students will have prepared speeches to present to their classmates, their families, and the members of the faculty. The three were chosen from several students who auditioned to speak.

Grace McCarty is the daughter of Toni and Tim McCarty of New Holland. Grace titled her speech “Make It a Great Day - The Choice Is Yours,” and she said she was inspired by New Holland Elementary School principal Sue Sneath, who made the comment to students daily when Grace attended school there. “She made a large impact on our (elementary school) class, and I wanted to make that impact on our (Class of 2023) in the final moment with them,” shared Grace. In the fall, Grace plans to attend Penn State

University Park. She has not decided on a major, but she is leaning toward focusing on elementary education.

Grace said that her time at GSHS has made a lasting impact on her because of the connection to community that was created.

Sarah Babb is the daughter of Kendra and Charles Babb of Narvon. She has called her speech “Remember Your Roots.” “My speech encourages people to remember that they wouldn’t be where they are today or in the future without Garden Spot (High School),” relayed Sarah, “whether it be the people who were here or the opportunities GSHS gave us.” In the fall, Sarah plans to attend Widener University in Chester to major in nursing. “My end goal is to become a nurse practitioner,” Sarah reported. She stated that her time at GSHS has been marked by good memories and relationships. “I met some of my best friends here, and I can genuinely say I am proud of where I went to high school,” she noted.

Mati Lanteri Sterza is an exchange student with the ERDT SHARE! High

School Exchange Program. She is the daughter of Paola Sterza and Filippo Lanteri of Italy. Her American house parents are Brenda and Gary Hornberger of Bowmansville. Mati’s speech is called “My American Dream,” and in it she will talk about her experiences in the U.S. “I will tell the truth about something that is not commonly said,” she noted. “American high school is not easy, but it’s up to you (to do the work that’s necessary).” When the school year ends, Mati will return to Italy to complete her fifth and final year of high school. After finishing high school, she hopes to study graphic communications in Florence. She is grateful for her time at GSHS. “I got to know incredible people who shaped the person I am today,” she said.

Tickets are necessary to attend the graduation ceremony.

Family fun to raise funds

Several years ago, Brandon Adams, a graphic designer with Garden Spot Village (GSV), felt a calling to partner with Missions of Hope International (MOHI), an organization that tackles poverty with the goal of transforming lives through the hope of Christ. The first trip based on that partnership occurred in February of 2022, when a Travel with Purpose team made up of GSV staff members and residents visited people in need in the urban slums of the Mathare Valley, Nairobi, Kenya.

Spartans win the battle against Cocalico in Districts

The Garden Spot Spartans, playing in the opening round of the District Three Class 2A boy’s volleyball playoffs, may have looked back to a regularseason match played right on their home court early in May as a source of motivation when they hosted the very same opponent - Cocalico.

The match was played on May the Fourth - the one day out of 365 that evokes punny posts across social media pertaining to an epic science fiction movie quote.

On that particular evening, the force was with the Spartans in the opening set as they ran away with a 25-9 win. However, the Imperial Forces foiled the quest for a win as Cocalico won the next three for a 3-1 victory.

The sequel opened on Tuesday, May 23 at the same theater - the Garden Spot gymnasium.

The plot twist, this time was for the Eagles to open with a win and for Garden Spot to put together a relentless comeback for a 3-1 victory.

“We split with them during the regular season,” senior outside hitter Tanner Laukhuff stated. “I think we came out wanting revenge and proving that we were the better team.”

“We wanted to take care of business, especially with what happened here two weeks ago,” head coach Ben Rutt added.

The Cocalico Eagles, who ended their season at 11-6, overcame an early 8-6 deficit in the first set and scored the next six points. They had another five-point run a few minutes later. In all they had a seven-point lead twice at 1811 and 20-13 before finally wrapping up a 25-18 victory.

Rutt explained that the team needed to get back to its usual style of play, which included avoiding errors, in order to turn the momentum.

“In game one, we gave up five or six points in a row and we lost by that many,” Rutt noted. “It wasn’t so much what Cocalico did as what we did with our servicing.”

Though there were still half a dozen service errors in the second set, the Spartans fought to stay in the lead. The Eagles did get to within one point at 22-21 only to see Garden Spot score the next three points for the matchtying win.

Laukhuff poured in a match-high 28 kills while also finishing with nine digs, which tied Justin Mininger for the team lead in that category. Laukhuff was asked about how the blocking by the

Garden Spot front line seemed to take the Eagles out of their rhythm.

“Every team gets frustrated when they can’t put the ball away,” Laukhuff replied. “I think it’s even more frustrating when you can’t get it over the net. The moment their big hitter, who is used to putting away every ball, stops being productive, they didn’t know what to do anymore. They were scrambling trying to find someone to step up.”

“Two weeks ago we beat them bad in the first game and we fell apart because we couldn’t get those blocks,” Rutt explained. “They were setting them up inside and we couldn’t make the adjustment.”

Rutt also addressed how the Spot blocking helped swing things in his team’s favor.

“Early on our serving was very inconsistent,” Rutt said. “We had too many service errors. I told them to focus on a couple of their guys and try to get them out of system. I thought we did a better job with our serves late, which got them out of system more and allowed us to set up our blocks well. We got some really good touches on a couple of their big guys.”

Cocalico’s big hitter on Tuesday night was senior Chase Stark, who finished with 12 kills. Giovannie Perez dished out 19 assists while Mason Lesher led the squad in digs with 10.

The Spartans withstood another six-point run by the Eagles in the third set. Cocalico, trailing 18-12, battled back to even the score in the pivotal third set. The Eagles stayed close, nipping at the home team’s heels until Garden Spot increased its 22-21 lead once again with three straight points. Second set: 25-21.

“The third game was very pivotal,” said Rutt. “I told the guys ‘We don’t want to go down 2-1.’ We took it to them. We played really well, starting to get under their skin a little bit and getting them out of their team system.”

Also coming through with crucial kills in the third and fourth sets was junior Ezra Hubik, who also earned two

assists. Hubik also addressed the issue with the early service errors.

“Yes, that’s been a problem in some of our past games as well,” he said. “I’m sure we can get it going.”

In the fourth and final set, the Spartans led by as many as nine points, using a fivepoint run to grab a 17-9 lead and later holding a commanding 19-10 advantage.

The Eagles had two brief spurts, especially when they scored three straight while facing match point at 24-15.

“They had a little run in the end,” Hubik said. “But we knew we needed just that one to finish it off. We gave it our all.”

“You’ll play quality teams in the playoffs,” Rutt explained “The further you go, the better the teams are. You’re not going to blow anybody away; you’ll have to win games by two, three or four points. And getting a team out of system, so they lose focus, can be the difference.”

TRACK & FIELD

Angela Nuse sprinted to a seventh-place finish in the 100-meter dash at the District Three 3A track & field championships. The Spartan senior did trim some time off from her prelims where she ran a 12.67 and finished fourth. In the finals of the 100-m, she

posted a time of 12.63.

The championships were held on Friday and Saturday, May 19-20, at Shippensburg University.

Kaleb Zimmerman, another senior, came through with another outstanding performance in the shot put. His throw sailed 48 feet 10.5 inches, only one inch shy of Lancaster-Lebanon League

rival Weston Nolt of Ephrata. Nolt took sixth place at 4811.5 while Zimmerman earned seventh.

In the girls’ field events, Nuse recorded a 15-10 long jump to earn 13th place. Also representing Garden Spot in districts was sophomore Megan Hechler. She took 24th place (17.07) in the 100 hurdles.

inclement weather, the event will be held in the GSV Chapel and the Village Square.

Adams came across the idea for the Backyard Bash when he was researching fundraising events. “I saw the idea for a movie night, but that spun into a Backyard Bash and Movie Night because that’s more fun than just a movie,” said Adams.

Jeannine, who is helping to organize the fundraiser, said that the group hopes to offer African-themed games as part of the Backyard Bash. She added that a drum circle will be organized by Lisa Fairman of Earth Rhythms, who will bring about 40 drums and invite people of all ages to participate. “She leads the rhythms and she does some cultural singing with that,” said Jeannine. Free Africanthemed face painting and an African dress-up photo booth will be available.

Team member Hershey noted that a variety of yard games will include cornhole, ladderball, pickleball, and flying disc. Free food items that

will be served at the event will include popcorn and ice cream.

At dusk, an outdoor, family-friendly African-themed movie will be shown. Adams said the film would include preview videos from MOHI and run about two hours.

Currently, 28 children are sponsored through MOHI by 25 GSV residents and staff. “We will meet all those kids and hang out with them (when) we are there,” said Adams, who noted the team will leave on Sept. 16. “Some of the sponsors will be there (to meet the children).”

During the Backyard Bash, a freewill offering will be accepted, and attendees will have opportunities to sponsor children through MOHI. More information about GSV may be found by searching for “Garden Spot Village” on Facebook. For details about the event, visit www.gardenspotvillage.org and click on “View Events.”

Swiss Pioneer schedules book auction

When the Swiss Pioneer Preservation Society holds a book auction on Thursday, June 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the Big Spring Farm, 735 Spruce Road, New Holland, several early books will be going up for bids. “We have two books printed at Ephrata Cloister,” said Ray Zimmerman, a representative of the nonprofit organization. “One is a song book written in German from 1806, and the other is a 1770 book titled ‘Conservation of the Saving Faith.’” The oldest book to be auctioned is a 1630 German Bible printed in Strasburg, Germany.

One unique offering is a number of handwritten scrolls. “This one is scroll No. 9, and it was written by Warren W. Martin of Reinholds,”

said Zimmerman, pointing to one of the scrolls. “He was married to Anna Hahn.”

A total of 818 lots will be sold at the auction. Zimmerman noted that boxed lots

including cookbooks will be sold via silent auction.

Readers who have questions about the event may contact Zimmerman at 717354-7139.

Luthercare presents scholarships

Luthercare recently awarded $18,000 in scholarships to help advance the education of local graduating high school seniors who are pursuing careers in nursing. The recipients had distinguished themselves through their written essay, letters of reference, and passion for the field.

One-time, $5,000 scholarships were presented to Annika Bollinger of Cocalico High School and Tori Heiserman of Lampeter-Strasburg High School.

A special one-time, $3,000 scholarship, the Mary Roth Nursing Scholarship, was awarded to Vanessa Russo of Northern Lebanon High School. The scholarship was named in memory of Mary Roth, a longtime Lititz and Luther Acres resident who passed away in 2019 at age 95. Her sister, who is also a

resident of Luther Acres, wanted to find a meaningful way to recognize what would have been Mary’s 100th birthday this year and chose to help fund the education of a future nurse by setting up the scholarship.

One-time, $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Kyra Bixler of Garden Spot High School; Sydney Brubaker of Donegal High School; Isabel Harnish of Annville-Cleona High School; Sophia Lutz of Lancaster Country Day

School; and Savannah Stauffer of Ephrata Senior High School.

The winners will continue their education and professional development at Clemson University, Lebanon County Career and Technology Center, Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences, Villanova University, and York College of Pennsylvania.

PUBLIC AUCTION

They say that the best things in life are free. Maybe the only thing better is people sharing resources with others.

The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series is back bigger and better than ever. But as it has evolved into a major event in Lancaster County, the Summer Music Series has become more reliant on the financial support of local businesses and philanthropic organizations.

Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation president Tom Ellis said that the popular events couldn’t be offered free to the public without that support. This year’s 13-concert Summer Music Series, which will be conducted every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. from June 4 to Aug. 27 at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, is being backed by Citadel, Clark Associates, Ephrata National Bank, Everence, the Hershey Company, Lancaster County Community Foundation and Woodstream.

up here, they’ll say, ‘I remember going to the Long’s Park Summer Music Series.’ I think this year’s lineup is one of the best we’ve had in years. Its diversity is curated for every audience. We want to make sure the music resonates with the citizens of Lancaster. We almost need to be fresh and new every year so people come back.”

The now-iconic Long’s Park Amphitheater was built in 1962, and the summer music simply followed. Over those years, the Summer Music Series has introduced people to performers like Count Basie, Pat and Shirley Boone, The Smothers Brothers, Helen Reddy, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Roberta Flack and Kevin Bacon, many before they became household names.

“We curate music and art for everyone in the Lancaster community,” added Ellis. “Most of our audience is drawn from the city of Lancaster.”

If generous support has become a trademark of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series’ 61-year tradition, so has diversity. This summer’s music series, which features a wide variety of genres, from jazz to Irish, from blues to rock, from bluegrass to funk and soul, promises not to disappoint.

Traditionally, the Summer Music Series has drawn between 3,000 and 6,000 viewers for each 90-minute concert. That number usually balloons to 25,000 to 30,000 for its annual patriotic concert, which this year will be celebrated on July 2.

“It’s how summer begins,” said Ellis. “For people who grew

“The musicians come to us after every event and tell us, ‘I hope you realize what you have here,’” said Ellis. “We don’t look for bands that create an on-stage performance through pyrotechnics and lighting. We want it to be pure art through music. We want to have artists who are true to their craft.”
