Church Holds Parking Lot Parade By Ann Mead Ash

In the days of COVID-19 restrictions, churches and other organizations have found unique and safe ways to bring the community together and enjoy opportunities to be creative. The New Holland Church of the Nazarene (NHCN), 428 Ranck Road, New Holland, asked church members and friends to exercise a little creativity with a car parade, which was held in the church parking lot beginning at 11 a.m. on May 16. The idea for the parade was introduced on May 6 in a video posted to the church’s Facebook page. In the video, NHCN youth and young adults pastor Darin Parry and children’s pastor Allyson Vrabel explained that the parade would be held in a safe manner. Parry invited church families in all age groups to decorate their cars. A staging area was

designated in the parking lot near Ranck Road. The idea was to have cars decorated in a variety of themes take a lap around the parking lot one at a time, while a panel of four judges would choose winners in categories including most colorful and most creative. A spectator area was designated in the lower part of the lot in front of the KinderHaus section of the church, where people could park to watch the parade. By 11 a.m., about 15 cars were registered to take part, and up to 30 spectators had arrived to watch the parade. Participants’ themes included a birthday celebration, with a bunch of balloons tied to the car’s hood; Jonah and the whale, with a whale’s tale sticking out the moonroof and teeth lining the inside of the open hatchback; Upward sports programs; and the Class of 2020, which utilized Garden Spot High School colors and sported rolls of toilet paper

to represent the zeros in 2020. One bright orange vintage Chevrolet came decorated with an extra-large rubber ducky blow-up, complete with sunglasses, tied to the roof. A mini-van that took part was almost completely covered in colored sticky notes. A number of participants won prizes for their entries. The overall winners were the Zimmerman family for their graduation theme. Second place went to the Miller family, whose vehicle paid homage to the Upward sports programs. Third place went to the Parry family for their “Under the Sea”-themed vehicle. The Vrabel family van won in the most colorful category, and the Murphy family won best decorated for their Jonah-themed car. The Reiff family also decorated their car, which won in the most creative category, in an “Under the Sea” motif, but their vehicle was reminiscent of the animated

Still Waters Ministries Begins Telecounseling In response to the current stay-at-home directive in Pennsylvania, Still Waters Ministries (SWM), located at Conestoga Mennonite Church in Morgantown, is offering virtual one-on-one

Still Waters Ministries, founded by Sam and Jill Waters, began offering virtual counseling sessions on May 18.

counseling sessions for clients in Berks, Chester and Lancaster counties. According to Sam Waters, executive director of SWM, telecounseling began on May 18. Telecounseling allows individuals, couples and families to meet online through a HIPAA-approved network without having to download software or use usernames and passwords. To access a scheduled counseling session, clients will receive a link via email that will be valid for that counseling session only. “(Clients) can call me and say they want an appointment and I will schedule the appointment (via email),” said Sam. “They click on the link in the email and they will wait in an ‘office.’ Then they will come in and we will have our face-to-face conversation. We considered Zoom, but that is not HIPAA approved. We are using Doxy.me, which is an approved virtual office space.” He said counseling is open to both current and new clients who are dealing with a variety of issues. “With this coronavirus, people are experiencing higher levels of anxiety and fear,” he stated. “Domestic violence is on the increase.” See Still Waters pg 3

Veterans Honored In New Holland By Ann Mead Ash

Gene Eberly arrived at the St. Stephen Reformed Church cemetery a little after 9 a.m. on May 23 with several bundles of small American flags in his car. He spoke briefly to Lamar Martin, who was driving a truck loaded with red geraniums to the location, before dividing the bundles to be placed in designated areas of the cemetery. At about 10 a.m., area veterans Eberly knows from St. Stephen arrived to help mark the graves of veterans with the flags and geraniums. The 2020 New Holland Memorial Day Pilgrimage and the ceremony at the New Holland Park were canceled in early May. Members of the ELANCO United Veterans Council of New Holland felt that it would be impossible to hold the event and maintain COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

“(The pilgrimage) started on May 20, 1922,” said Eberly, who confirmed that this is the first year the full pilgrimage has not been held. “When it first started, it was just the two cemeteries, Trinity Lutheran and St. Stephen,” Eberly noted. “As it went on, they added the others to make it up to 13.” The 13 cemeteries that are usually visited during the See Veterans pg 4

Gene Eberly of the ELANCO United Veterans Council of New Holland placed flags in the St. Stephen Reformed Church cemetery on May 23. Eberly and other volunteers placed flags and red geraniums on the graves of veterans to be sure they were remembered on Memorial Day this year.

For young people involved in FFA programs around the commonwealth, one of the high points of the year is the Pennsylvania FFA state convention held annually at Penn State University in early June. Typically, approximately 1,500 FFA members attend the convention, which focuses on career and leadership development events during interactive and hands-on competitions or activities. The in-person state convention has been canceled and will be replaced with a virtual state convention that will be held the week of Monday, June 8. Readers may contact Michael Brammer, executive director of the Pennsylvania FFA Association, at mbrammer@paffa.org or 717-580-4864 for more details. As a sign of its support for seniors who will not have the opportunity to attend an in-person convention this year, the Lancaster County Agriculture Council is providing 2020 FFA state convention T-shirts at no charge for graduating seniors in FFA chapters in Lancaster County that responded to its offer. They include Manheim Central, Pequea Valley, Penn Manor, Solanco, Lampeter-Strasburg, Grassland, Elizabethtown, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, and Ephrata. Most teachers from the programs came to the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster on May 26 to pick up the shirts for their chapters. In addition, the Lancaster County Agriculture Council offered a Zoom event on May 28 where officers from each of the programs in the county provided a brief overview of the 2019-20 year at their school. The event was hosted by FFA alumni who are part of the Lancaster County Agriculture Council.

contains the phrase “He leads me beside the still waters” and also is a reference to Jill and Sam’s last name. Help is offered to those dealing with a variety of issues, such as anger, depression, fear and anxieties, addictions, self-esteem issues and broken relationships. The ministry also offers an array of services for victims of domestic violence. While the ministry is church-based, counseling services are offered to everyone, regardless of church or religious affiliation. “Seven years (after starting the ministry), we have provided nearly 10,000 hours of counseling services to men, women and children of all ages,” Sam reported. “In terms of dollar amounts and based upon the average counseling costs of comparable services, we have provided nearly $1 million of services, all at no cost to the client.” He added that the SWM sign located on the front lawn of the church was taken down and had to be replaced, which led some to believe that the ministry was no longer available. “We want to get the word out that we have not gone anywhere; we are just changing how we are offering services,” said Sam. Sam believes that the virtual sessions will be helpful as the clients become accustomed to an online meeting. “I think it will be different for people if they have never done it before, but with time, they will be more comfortable,” he noted. “A lot of people are uncomfortable to begin with to see a counselor, but after a couple of times, they will get the feel of it.” In preparation for the virtual sessions, SWM updated its computer equipment. “All we had in the office was a laptop,” Sam noted. “We got a desktop computer that is faster and a highdefinition sound system and monitor. We’ve upgraded our system to handle the new service.” Help with purchasing the equipment was provided through a donation from Globus Medical Inc., based in Malvern. “We were contacted by the medical company that wanted to make donations to organizations that are helping out during this period,” Same explained. “We got $5,000 to support people coming in during this period who are suffering from mental illness or anxiety issues.” Sam, along with his wife, Jill, began SWM as a way to provide no-cost counseling services to uninsured persons living in the tri-county area. The office opened at the church in July 2012. The name of the ministry comes from Psalm 23:2, which

In the weeks leading up to Memorial Day this year, there were questions about whether the flags would be placed along with the flowers and who would place them. “Normally the Boy and Cub Scouts from New Holland come over and put out the flowers (and the flags), said Eberly. “This year, (since the children) can’t go to school or play

researchers, and innovators. With the current state-mandated closure of all nonessential businesses in the area, the Lancaster Science Factory is experiencing an immediate and severe financial shortfall, which may increase by the end of the year.

for producing cloth community masks. Back in York, a couple sheets of plastic, garbage bags and a rain poncho were used in figuring out a prototype that would allow WellSpan Health to eventually mesh a material design to create isolation gowns. Letterkenny reallocated resources to adequately staff its upholstery shop to begin gown production. While the initial order was to make 70,000 protective gowns, Noll said that there was enough material to support production of at least 225,000. Letterkenny

expected production to take six to eight weeks to fulfill the first order, while it provided weekly deliveries to a WellSpan distribution site. Noll added that innovative thinking and partnering with manufacturers throughout the five counties that WellSpan Health serves can allow the system to be less reliant on the national supply chain and be better prepared moving forward. For more information about WellSpan Health, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.

The fifth annual Cosmic Bash was renamed Bash the Pandemic and held virtually this year. Funds will support the museum’s STEM education efforts. The event was livestreamed at www.bashthepandemic.org. The site currently hosts the live feed recording for viewing as well as opportunities to bid on items in the Auction Re-Mix happening now. The museum noted that financial support is greatly appreciated. The evening featured a number of program segments,

with the highlight of the evening being the first ever screening of “The Information Matrix,” a short-form documentary hosted by actor Laurence Fishburne. The film features the North Museum and Dr. Roger Thomas, professor emeritus at Franklin & Marshall College. Many sponsors and supporters contributed to the event, and more details are available at www.north museum.org.
