GSHS Sets Commencement Ceremony By Ann Mead Ash

When the more than 250 members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Class of 2019 gather for graduation exercises at the school, 669 E. Main St., New Holland, on Friday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m., two of their classmates will give speeches to family, friends, and school faculty and staff. Alayna Henry and Molly Brennan were both selected by audition to speak at the event. Henry’s speech is based on a quote from Lady Gaga, which Henry summarized as, “I want you to reject anything that has made you feel like you don’t belong because you deserve a place in the world.” Henry said that she considered thoughts to share with her fellow seniors that would send them beyond the boundaries of

GSHS feeling freer. “If they could leave (behind) all the things that were weighing them down in high school, they could then go into the world lighter and ready to do whatever it is they are going to do,” she said, adding that she did not want her speech to resonate with only a segment of the class. “I wanted it to be for everybody,” she said, noting that some of her classmates would go into the mission field, others into the workforce, and others to college. At GSHS, Henry has served as Tri-M Music Honor Society treasurer. She is a member of the color guard in the marching band and a member of the chorus and vocal ensembles. Henry has also been involved in Garden Spot Performing Arts (GSPA) throughout her high school career, and she See GSHS Commencement pg 2

CrossNet executive director Meredith Dahl invites area families in need to partake of the program, which has been in operation for a decade. “We want to get the word out to the community that the program is available, and it’s free,” said Dahl. “We want to make sure that any child who (needs one) is able to access a free lunch.” For 2019, the organization’s 10th year to run the summer lunch program, community members and businesses See Summer Lunch Program pg 8

After college, she plans to go to law school to be a constitutional lawyer. Both students noted that their time at GSHS has been marked by positive experiences with teachers and administration. “I am glad to have been at this school because there was never a time I didn’t feel safe here,” said Henry, who went on to describe the patience a number of teachers showed her when she was challenged by schoolwork. Brennan agreed, citing the close atmosphere she has experienced in a place where teachers are likely to know most of the students by name. “It’s a benefit of going to a small, rural school that everyone knows you and wants you to succeed,” she stated.

When Dawn Waltman and her husband, Brian, had a stillborn child 23 years ago, the experience jarred them. As they worked to negotiate the grieving process, the couple discovered there was no place for families to go to commemorate their lost children. “People expected these families to pick up and move on,” recalled Dawn. Dawn and Brian did not agree with the cultural response to their situation. “We felt deeply the babies should be remembered,” said Dawn. “We didn’t feel God wanted families to just move on from a loss. The child should be grieved, remembered, and celebrated.” The couple set about creating a place for those who had lost babies to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Working with a board, Dawn and Brian created the Garden of Hope, located at 30 Springhouse

R040178

& EXCAVATING

Lane, Gordonville. The garden, which is now 10 years old, will be the site of a special event for families that have lost babies on Sunday, June 9, at 4 p.m. The event will begin with a service at the restored Tobacco Barn at the Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens. The service will include Scripture readings and song. Dawn will speak about the mission of the garden and what it means for families. Each family will receive a yellow biodegradable balloon on which to write the name of the child they lost. “We do a remembrance walk from the Tobacco Barn to the Garden of Hope,” said Dawn, who explained that yellow is the color of remembrance. “It is silent as we walk with the balloons.” At the garden, doves will be released to symbolize the spirit of God journeying with the families, and the babies’ names will be read. “As the name is read, the families

release their balloon,” explained Dawn. When Dawn and Brian were first envisioning a memorial garden for families, they saw the “Hope” sculpture of Christ holding a baby in his arms and holding a mother’s hand on a Focus on the Family broadcast. They knew the piece belonged in the garden, so they contacted Beverly Paddleford, the creator of the sculpture, and raised the funds to purchase one. By 2005, Garden of Hope’s full-size sculpture was being transported to different churches for services. In 2006, Myron Stoltzfus donated land for the garden. “We spent a couple years on land development and structure of the garden,” said Dawn, who noted that many area excavators, masons, and landscapers came in and volunteered to create and build the garden. Paintings and a reflection gazebo for families to visit at any time are also part of the garden.

While the sculpture is a focal point, Dawn pointed out that the garden has two memorial walls. “Families can order plaques in memory of their babies,” she explained, noting that plaques that have been placed in the garden honor children who were lost recently as well as those lost more than 50 years ago. She added that siblings sometimes purchase a plaque in honor of a brother or sister. Readers who would like more information about the garden or the service may visit www.lan castergardenofhope.com. Pictured on front: Attendees at a past service at the Garden of Hope in Gordonville gather around the sculpture that is central to the garden. This year’s service for families to commemorate children lost to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death will be held at the garden at 4 p.m. on June 9.

Car Cruise from pg 1 Nomads. The group will play throughout the event. Mellinger explained that both cars were noticed by the magazine’s photographer at the East Coast Indoor Nationals Car, Truck, and Bike Show held in Timonium, Md., in December of 2017. Mellinger’s Camaro was one that he and Hanna worked on together to restore for a friend in 1988. “I bought it from the friend in 2004,” said Mellinger. Hanna said that his El Camino has been with him since high school. “This was my first car,” said Hanna, who purchased the vehicle in December 1987. Harnish said that this year’s cruise will feature a variety of vintage and modern vehicles, as well as a number of competitions involving cars, model vehicles, and food. He noted that the cruise is open to cars, trucks,

motorcycles, and tractors. “If it’s on wheels, and (owners) have the (registration fee) they can come (join us),” said Harnish, who hopes to see 300 vehicles take part in this year’s show. There is no preregistration for the event, as registration will only be available on the day of the cruise. During the cruise, local

firefighters will select vehicles to receive awards in several categories, including firefighters’ choice, chief ’s choice, best motor, and best paint. Contests involving cars will include a muffler rap contest. Perks for those who register vehicles will include T-shirts to the owners of the first 50

vehicles and dash plaques to the first 100 owners. Participants will also have the opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses, including a grand prize of $1,000 off the purchase of a new car or truck from a local dealership or $500 cash. Other contests will include a model car competition that is

open to people of all ages. “Model car competition winners will receive ribbons,” said Harnish. Food trucks located on-site will offer grilled meats, including hamburgers, and french fries and ice cream treats for purchase. Funds raised by the event will benefit GSFR, an all-volunteer

firefighting and rescue force serving the greater New Holland area. GSFR is ready to welcome more volunteers. “Anyone interested in volunteering can come to the cruise and talk to a (GSFR member),” said Harnish. Readers who have questions about the car cruise may call 717-940-8672.

Additional snack items will be included as well when available. “We are so thankful for the partnership with the community that makes (the summer lunch program) possible, said Dahl. Students in the district who qualify for free and reduced lunches during the school year are eligible for free lunches during the summer. Children and youths ages 1 to 18 and any student who will be a high school senior in the fall of 2018 are eligible. Participants will need to sign a waiver when they come and pick up their first lunch. Parents are encouraged to register their children for the program, which will be coordinated by Marburger, by calling the CrossNet office at the above number before the program opens in June. During the summer of 2018, more than 75 volunteers and staff were needed to pack lunches, deliver the meals to pickup locations, and pick up donations. Volunteers will be needed from 9:30 to 11 a.m. each day lunches are served. Individuals who wish to volunteer may register to do so at https://signup.com/go/yneqvRo.

The staff at CrossNet Ministries is preparing for the 10th year of running the summer lunch program, which will provide weekday lunches to eligible children in the ELANCO School District from June through August. Those who have questions about volunteering may call the previously mentioned number. Students age 16 and up are welcome to volunteer, and Marburger noted that some have done so to complete community service hours for school. In addition to volunteers, food and monetary donations are needed to support the program. Marburger noted that the program is especially in need of self-locking plastic sandwich bags, brown paper lunch bags, and individually packaged snack foods, such as crackers or

granola bars. In conjunction with the summer lunch program, Heather Smith, library director at the ELANCO Library, plans to ride the book bike to the Food and Nutrition Center to hold a weekly story time at a day and time still to be determined. According to Dahl, the poverty rate for the community is 44 percent, with Blue Ball and New Holland elementary schools close to 50 percent. For this reason, she hopes that those who know about the program will share that information with friends and family who might have a need. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the winners of its 2019 Safety Training and Evaluation (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2019 OSHA Partners on May 1. Representatives from several member companies accepted their awards at the ABC Safety Awards Dinner. The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is STEP, which provides companies a structured approach to benchmark and improve their safety efforts. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 20 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidence rates. Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates. Companies receive a recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Participant based on this data. Receiving Platinum recognition for the 2019 STEP Awards were Bertolet Construction Corporation, Wernersville; CB Construction Services Inc., Dillsburg; Flyway Excavating Inc., Mount Joy; Mowery, Mechanicsburg; and Wagman Construction Inc., York. Maintenance Technicians from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

More than 65 students, many of them adults who are working full-time jobs and attending school, have already taken part in the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology (TSCT) Facilities Maintenance (FMT) program offered in partnership with Tec Centro in Lancaster, which began at the school in the spring of 2018. The spring 2019 class will graduate on Friday, June 7. “When you see the children (of the graduating students) at graduation, it puts it in perspective,” said Timothy Bianchi, vice president of academic affairs for TSCT. “Adults are coming back to school … many of whom thought they would never go to a college.” Bianchi explained that the roots of the FMT program were cultivated by William Griscom, president of TSCT, who recognized a need for skilled technicians in the facilities maintenance field. Seed money for the

program was provided by the BB&T Economic Growth Fund in partnership with the Lancaster County Community Foundation. PNC Bank also contributed to help buy students’ tools. Tec Centro, located at 102 Chester St., Lancaster, provides vocational training, and representatives of the school had been working to develop a facilities manager program when Thaddeus Stevens College received the grant money. A majority of the classes are offered at the Tec Centro campus. Marlyn Barbosa, director of Tec Centro, said the partnership has been beneficial to students. “(The partnership) has provided more access to community members to attend a competitive school like TSCT,” said Barbosa. “(Students) can get their training in the neighborhood, and it has allowed nontraditional students adults in the workforce - to gain additional skills to help them

(with employment),” she noted Instructor Tim Draper said that the six-month program requires students to be dedicated and focused. Students receive occupational safety training followed by four weeks each of instruction in disciplines including carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and masonry. “They finish with a six-week hands-on program where we do a live project,” explained Draper. Students who pass the course receive an OSHA certificate and powder-actuated tool certification, along with forklift training. They may also be tested to handle refrigerant. “The instructors are the key to connecting with the students, delivering the program, and coaching them,” Bianchi noted. In addition to Draper, professors include Josephine Tyndall for plumbing; Mark Gardner for masonry; Ray Buckwalter and his son Joel, who team-teach

electrical systems; Joel Charles and John Coyle at HallerU; and Dave Sload and Stephanie Larkin at ABC Keystone. Members of the recent cohort worked to complete their on-thejob training at the building that will become the Heritage Press Education Center. The .918 Club will use the completed building to preserve and promote letterpress printing. “It will be a hands-on learning center for school groups, church groups, and community groups,” said Ken Kulinkowski, .918 Club president, who is thrilled at the progress the students have made at the building. “In the six weeks, they have accomplished as much as we did in four years,” he noted, adding that the group plans to open the building for the Printer’s Fair to be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 20 through 22. Draper noted that students who complete the course may decide to

The students who have completed the six-month program, which is run in partnership with Tec Centro, will graduate on June 7. go further in one of the fields they have been introduced to in the program, or they may opt to look for employment with management companies for shopping centers and apartment buildings. The next cohort will begin on Monday, June 17, with classes

The OMPH elementary school Destination Imagination team won first place in the Pennsylvania State Destination Imagina- The OMPH middle school Destination Imagination team also tion competition. won first place. The Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) Catholic School’s elementary and middle school Destination Imagination teams, under the leadership of teacher and team coordinator Natasha Drum, both earned first place in the Pennsylvania State Destination Imagination competition and the opportunity to participate in the Destination Imagination Global Finals in Kansas City, Mo. Both teams competed in the Game On Challenge. This challenge consisted of the team

choosing a game, researching the origins of the game and incorporating the research into its story. The team had to show its presentation from two or more points of view. To do so, the teams created a game gizmo using technical elements that would cause something to happen during the game. The teams also designed a container that would hold all of their props; the container needed to transform in some way during their presentation. The middle school team, managed by Ann DiNovis, included

Olivia Janke, Rachel Hinojosa, Gabrielle Dube, and Julie Leonard. This team chose to bring The Game of Life alive. The elementary team, managed by Mr. and Mrs. Lance Barrett and Sylvia Allwardt, included Jacques Bowers, Samantha Leonard, Celia Ives, Adrian Ruzic, Molly Barrett, and Luke Bowers. This team brought the game of Clue to life and incorporated its own food character twist. OMPH School, located in Ephrata, welcomes children from local Catholic churches, as well as

Add in eggs, one at a time, and beat thoroughly. In a separate bowl, sift together dry ingredients: flour, salt, and baking powder. Starting and ending with the dry ingredients and with mixer on low speed, alternately add in dry ingredients and the milk and vanilla. Mix until just combined, being sure to not over-mix. Organizer Dean Hershey shared that in celebration of this being the 20th year for the Motorsports Show, organizers decided to select a feature vehicle for the first time: the iconic Ford Mustang, now in its 55th year of continuous production. An area designated as the Mustang Corral will feature all six generations of Mustangs, as well as special models, Shelbys, Cobras, and other limited editions. “In upcoming years we’ll probably feature other cars,” added Hershey. Special guest John M. Clor of Ford Performance, who has authored several books on the Mustang, will present on the history of the Ford Mustang at 10 a.m. in the LCBC auditorium. R040228

Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager, and such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift must become certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension will offer the ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at many locations across the state. Participants will learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving the food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a 75 percent or higher score, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This
