According to Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, the 2020 free summer lunch program will operate a little differently this year. “We want one family member at a time to retrieve the lunch wherever the lunch is picked up, she noted, adding that the family member is requested to wear a mask. “We will have some masks available. We don’t want anyone to go without food for lack of a mask, Marburger added. This year, organizers expect to prepare meals for about 225 children five days a week, as the program is open not only to students who are eligible for free and reduced-cost school lunches, but to any child in the ELANCO School District ages 1 to 18 who has been affected by COVID-19 restrictions. In addition, students over age 18 who are still registered and attending school will also be eligible. See Summer Lunch Program pg 5

Located throughout Lancaster County are seven centers that exist to give adults and children with special needs from the Plain community a chance to learn, socialize, and take part in productive work. The workshops also offer the families of these individuals respite. The centers are Sunny Sunbeam, Caring Hearts, Penn Johns Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, New Horizons, Valley Workshop, and Shady Hollow. The more than 80 students who attend the centers range in age from 14 to 76. A staff of 35 caregivers works with the students. All the centers were closed in March under COVID-19 restrictions, but organizers of the centers hope to reopen them in the late summer or fall. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s See Special Needs Auction pg 7
NHSAP Sets July Fourth Fireworks Group Modifies Concert Schedule By Ann Mead Ash
When the members of the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) committee met at the New Holland Memorial Community Park on June 1, the members knew that COVID-19 restrictions would cause them to limit the schedule of concerts and other activities that the group planned to hold in the park during the summer of 2020. The annual craft show, an NHSAP fundraiser, scheduled for Saturday, June 27, was canceled. The group noted that the safety of volunteers, vendors, and the community was foremost in the decision-making process. In addition, See July Fourth Fireworks pg 4
The New Holland Summer Arts Program has modified its summer schedule due to COVID-19 restrictions; however, fireworks will be held on Saturday, July 4, beginning at 9:30 p.m. A rain date of Sunday, July 5, has been set.

1979. Along the way, she has placed first in prestigious competitions such as the Southern |Pastry Classic in Atlanta in 2003. More recently, she earned gold as a member of a U.S. team that competed in the Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany, in 2016. Growing up in Cheshire, England, Notter often created sweet treats for her three younger sisters. “My parents didn’t buy boxed cookies and cakes,” recalled Notter. “When we wanted something sweet to eat, I had to make it.” Notter soon discovered that she enjoyed baking cakes and organizing birthday parties. Following high school, she worked for a year in a hotel before attending culinary school in Leicester, England, where she earned a degree in hospitality management. Knowing she wanted to specialize in pastries, Notter worked evenings and weekends for a small bakery in Melton Mowbray that focused on European-style pastries. At the age of 19, Notter completed culinary school and moved to Germany to work full time in the pastry field. She was employed by a large bakery that distributed products to 10 of its own pastry stores. For more than two years, Notter moved between departments, learning how to make decorative items, layered cakes, and tortes. At the same time, she learned to speak German. “People were friendly and welcoming. It was a wonderful experience,” said Notter. From there, Notter moved to Luzerne, Switzerland, to work in chocolate. She created bonbons, bars, and other confectionary treats for four months on a work visa. In 1983, she transferred to Zurich, where she began taking evening classes to learn to work with sugar. The teacher saw that she had talent, and she became his assistant. “We taught people to work with sugar in a way that

MULCH, MULCH, MULCH! This chocolate and blueberry dessert was one of several that pastry chef Susan Notter created to compete as part of a United States regional team for the 2020 Culinary Olympics. The team won gold and bronze medals in the competition. was very learnable,” said Notter. The pair began competing and teaching in other countries, eventually relocating to the U.S. in 1992. After working for Albert Uster Imports as corporate pastry chef, Notter took a job in Baltimore and found a house just over the Pennsylvania border in New Freedom around 2008. She worked in a variety of positions, including as director of the pastry arts program for YTI Lancaster. She is now employed as a distribution partner with Max Felchlin AG as a U.S. sales professional. For the Culinary Olympics in Germany, the team was required to create a five-course menu, four different finger foods, three appetizer plates, four plated desserts, and four petit fours. Notter was responsible for the desserts and the petit fours. Notter noted that the competition was steep. “The national teams from Norway, Sweden, and Finland really dominated,” said Notter, who lauded the team from Switzerland as well. “They’re very innovative.” Notter said that in addition to the competitions, she especially enjoys working for Max Felchlin AG, which is a family business that has been producing chocolate for more than 100 years. “We do classes and training for customers and tours of Switzerland,” said Notter, who added that her ability to speak German and her experience with the culture is helpful. “I love being out in the industry, and I am working with some of the best products in the world.” More information about the Culinary Olympics may be found at www.olympiade -der-koeche.com/en.

will be included as well when available. “We want to thank the community, said CrossNet executive director Meredith Dahl, who specifically mentioned donations from Herr’s Chips, Yoder’s Country Market, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, Hoober Produce, and Four Seasons Produce. “(We are grateful for) the businesses that have given already and the people in the community who are making this possible and helping us feel confident and ready for higher numbers of participants this year, she noted. Dahl also lauded Marburger’s partnership with the ELANCO elementary schools during the time the district provided lunches from March to June. “Amy has worked really well with the elementary schools, she said. “It has been a natural and smooth progression from the schools to the CrossNet lunch program, Dahl said. More than 75 total volunteers and staff are needed to pack lunches, deliver the meals to pickup locations, and pick up donations. A limited number of volunteers who follow restrictions will be needed from 9:30 to 11 a.m. each day lunches are served. Individuals who wish to volunteer to pack lunches may register at https://signup.com/

As businesses seek to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, several resources are available to them. The U.S. Chamber has unveiled its Reopening Business Digital Resources Center to equip America’s business community with the latest state guidelines, sector-specific guidance, small business advice, and other tools and resources as businesses look to reopen safely and keep employees and customers healthy and informed. The resources center also includes a customizable workplace flyer to help businesses communicate the steps they are taking to keep people safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to employees and customers. To learn more, readers may visit www.us chamber.com/reopening-business. Locally, the Lancaster Chamber and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County collaborated to create a $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. A resource to support Lancaster County-based businesses has been developed and may be visited at www.recoverylancaster.com. The website is a resource to provide pathways to emergency funding, free personal protective equipment (PPE), pandemic-related educational information, and advice. The goal is to help businesses operate safely and to fuel resolve to chart a new course forward. The site will be the main access point to both the $25 million Small Business Recovery & Sustainability Fund and $6 million in free PPE, the two key programs in phase one of the Economic Recovery Plan. Starting on June 8, county-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees can now register at the aforementioned website for kits with PPE-related items including face masks, hand sanitizer and thermometers. The supply is significant and is intended to serve most of Lancaster County’s small businesses. The site’s grant application portal opened to Lancaster County-based businesses with 20 or fewer employees on June 15; it will remain open through 6:59 p.m. on Friday, June 19. Grants will not be awarded on a first-come, firstserved basis; individuals have through June 19 to submit applications. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. The first phase of the funding program will offer grant opportunities totaling $10 million. In subsequent phases of the plan, the Recovery & Sustainability Fund is expected to offer an additional $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster County-based businesses with 100 or fewer employees. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government.

Northwest’s PPP Efforts Help Businesses
R059753
Like banks across the country, Northwest Bank (NWBI), headquartered in Warren, has been working to help small businesses curb the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. As soon as the Small Business Administration (SBA) released guidance to banks on the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), Northwest teams assembled to analyze the details and develop an open, client-friendly approach to the application process, no matter a business’s industry or size. The company launched a number of ways to connect with clients and work with them to collect the necessary application information, according to Mark Reitzes, Northwest’s head of commercial banking. Clients applying through Northwest could either connect one-on-one with a business banker, who helped to gather the information required by the SBA, or submit their loan package through Northwest’s online application portal. “As soon as our portal opened, the company’s business bankers proactively reached out to clients to let them know that the bank was ready to take applications,” Reitzes said. “We provided checklists, a step-by-step video and FAQs to ensure they fully understood the relief program and requirements. We received applications from businesses of all sizes and industries across our entire four-state footprint.” Despite Northwest’s efforts, nationwide demand was much greater than expected. Funds were drained in just a few days after launch and the SBA stopped accepting applications. While many banks followed the SBA’s lead and stopped taking applications between the first and second rounds of government funding, Northwest took a different approach. In hopes that the PPP would be funded for a second round, the bank continued to help clients gather and prepare application information for submission. Because of this approach, Northwest was ready to submit applications when the SBA’s loan portal reopened. According to Reitzes, nearly 100% of the PPP loan applications that Northwest received were approved by the SBA - a total of 3,700 loans that will provide more than $425 million worth of relief. Northwest’s efforts served employers of all sizes across a wide span of entities, including manufacturing, restaurants, religious organizations, professional services, beauty salons and contractors. These efforts helped protect more than 35,000 employees. Northwest Bancshares Inc. is the holding company of Northwest Bank. Northwest operates 206 full-service community banking offices and eight free standing drive-through facilities in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Indiana. In 2019, Pennsylvanians shared more than 17,000 acts of kindness on social media on 1-4-3 Day. This year, in particular, individuals had the opportunity to
