Each year, the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) partners with the New Holland Band, under the direction of Ken Laudermilch, to hold an Independence Day concert, followed by fireworks, in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located on the 400 block of East Jackson Street. In 2018, the concert began at the appointed time in spite of a downpour. “It rained, but we played anyway,” recalled Laudermilch. “People sat out there (in the park) with their umbrellas, and they gave us a standing ovation at the end.” This year’s concert, which will once again be followed by a fireworks display, will be held on Thursday, July 4, at 7 p.m. in the New Holland Community Park. As in the past, Laudermilch, who will conduct and narrate, has planned a two-part concert with an Americana theme, including a number
of tunes that pay homage to American history along with well-known songs chosen to appeal to people of all ages. The event will open with the national anthem and the posting of the colors before the band launches into John Philip Sousa’s “Black Horse Troop,” a tune written for the Ohio National Guard. The next tune, “Concord” by Clare Grundman, invokes images and sounds of the Revolutionary era using the songs “The White Cockade,” “America,” and “Yankee Doodle.” Local brothers Caleb and Aaron Good will perform a duet of “Cousins,” a piece by Herbert Lincoln Clarke, who served as Sousa’s first coronet player. Caleb will play coronet, and Aaron will play trombone. Laudermilch chose “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore in part because it was published around the same time the New Holland Band was founded. The first half of the concert will also include “American Folk Rhapsody No. 2,” by

Principal Matt Sanger opened the assembly and introduced the award, noting that it is given to students who are recognized for displaying characteristics as set forth by the American Legion. Melanie is the daughter of Don and Kathy Esh of New Holland. At school, she is a member of National Junior Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Art Excel, PE Excel, and Student Council. Melanie said that she was both very surprised and excited to receive the honor. Justin is the son of Korey and Jen Mininger of Narvon. At school, Justin is a member Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Art Excel, Walk and Talk, PE Excel, Fine Arts Excel, and Sports Club, and he plays soccer. Jen said that keeping the secret about the award for a few weeks was fun, but Korey struggled with it. “I sometimes I caught myself almost asking if he was looking forward to (the assembly),” Korey said with a chuckle. Justin assured his parents that they did a good job. “I had no clue. I was totally surprised,” he said.

“Esprit de Corps” by Robert Jager, is a variation on the Marine Hymn. The second half of the concert will open with the catchy “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” by Irving Berlin. “It was his first major hit in 1911,” shared Laudermilch. Next up will be George M. Cohan’s “Patriotic Fantasy.” “George M. Cohan was born on the third of July,” noted Laudermilch. “He published more than 300 songs, including ‘Over There,’ ‘Give My Regards to Broadway,’ ‘Yankee Doodle Boy,’ and ‘You’re a Grand Old Flag.’” “This Is My Country” will follow “Patriotic Fantasy.” Laudermilch has chosen “Golden Jubilee,” a song Sousa wrote to celebrate 50 years of conducting, to be followed by Irving Berlin’s “Songs for America.” “Let Freedom Ring” will then be followed by “Armed Forces Medley,” which includes a tribute to each branch of the armed services. Standards such as “America the Beautiful” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever” will bring the concert almost to a close. Laudermilch has saved “God Bless America” for last. “This was written (by Irving Berlin) at the end of World War II, and it was put away on the shelf,” said Laudermilch, who added that some years later when Kate Smith asked Berlin for a new tune, he gave it to her. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and the fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m. The rain date will be Friday, July 5. The performance is one of many musical presentations brought to the park each summer by NHSAP. All shows are free to the public. For more information about NHSAP and a full concert schedule, readers may visit www.newhollandsummerarts.com. NHSAP welcomes volunteers. Readers who have questions may email newhol landsummerartsassoc@gmail.com.

Attendees were greeted by the flags of a number of different countries when they entered the school from the back entrance, along with the mingled aromas of foods representing more than 20 countries. Also in the hallway were prize tables, a table representing Germany, and virtual reality viewers. At 6:30 p.m., individuals who have hosted exchange students gave a presentation in Room 332 that focused on their experiences. In the same location, following the first presentation, Dr. Edward Rajaseelan, head of the chemistry department at Millersville University, talked about life in Sri Lanka. Games that were available in the gym included basketball and soccer, the latter of which is thought of as a distinctly British game, but with roots in China, Greece, Rome, and parts of Central America. In the cafeteria, members of the Alpenrose Schuhplattler from the Lancaster Liederkranz demonstrated dancing associated with Bavaria and the Austrian Tyrol, with origins that can be found as far back as the 11th century. In the old gym, activities ranged from card games - Pennsylvania Dutch Blitz to ping-pong, a game that has English, American, and Japanese origins. Octopus tag, a child’s recess group game; La Cuerda, played with a jump rope; and hacky sack, a traditional Asian game, were offered in the old gym. Foods that were available to taste at the event included butter cookies from Bosnia, beef broccoli and fried rice from China, empanadas from Colombia, and macarons from France. Germany was represented by bratwurst, German potato salad, and soft pretzels, and India was represented by chicken tikka masala. Shepherd’s pie represented Ireland, and from Italy, a variety of pastas and tiramisu were served. Jerk chicken represented Jamaica, and green tea represented Japan. Salsa and chips and quinoa from Mexico were served, alongside Norwegian pancakes and Pennsylvania Dutch chow chow, shoefly pie, and whoopie pies. Poland was represented by pierogies and Puerto Rico by Spanish rice and beans. The country of Spain was also represented by Spanish rice. The Russian dish was korzinochki, sweet filled tartlets, and the South Korean dish was spicy soup. Swedish meatballs were served at the Swedish table, and falafel at the Syrian table. Thailand was represented by pad thai, a stir-fried rice noodle dish, and Uganda was represented by beef sauce and chapatis. The dish from Vietnam was banh mi thit nuong, a sandwich made with grilled pork. This is the second Night Around the World the health council has held. The group has also conducted mini Relays For Life at the high school to benefit the American Cancer Society.

More than 500 walkers and 5K runners from Lancaster and Lebanon counties recently joined together at the 33rd annual Walk Run for Life. The event was held at The Junction Center in Manheim to support the work of Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services (SVPS), and donations and pledges are still being processed. A former SVPS client spoke at the event. For more information about SVPS, readers may visit www.svps.org.

WellSpan Launches New Record System WellSpan Philhaven has begun the process of launching a new electronic health record system that will help to transform the way it delivers behavioral health care across the region. Beginning in mid-May, the regional behavioral health organization was slated to transition to an advanced record system, starting with its Mount Gretna-based inpatient units, lab, pharmacy, patient access, and registration, among other services. Its outpatient services in Dauphin, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties are slated to adopt the system in stages through the end of the year. WellSpan Philhaven locations in York and Adams counties and its inpatient unit at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital in Lancaster County have already adopted the new system. The system, a product of Epic - a national health care software firm based in Wisconsin - will allow patients to more easily connect with their care team. It also will allow for better coordination of patients’ care across WellSpan’s locations in central Pennsylvania.

coordinator. In the past five years, FoodStock has raised approximately $30,000. Fliszar noted that the event was created by Tom Hayden, who worked for the United States Postal Service and saw firsthand the success of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Hayden wanted to do more, so he created FoodStock Music Festival, which provides funds for local food banks and pantries. “Food insecurity affects people and families from all age groups, and summer months are especially tough,” Fliszar said. He reported that according to www.feedingamerica.org, 1 in 8 people, including 1 in 6 children, struggle with hunger in Pennsylvania. “In Lancaster County, approximately 59,000 residents, including 1 in 5 children, go hungry on a regular basis,” Fliszar remarked. “Additionally, those depending on food pantries are coming from all walks of life,” he continued. “Looking at the bigger picture, food insecurity not only affects these individuals, it can have a negative impact on the entire community.” Following the festival, the FoodStock board of directors will determine where to
disburse the proceeds so they do the most good. Past recipients have included the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, PowerPacks, the Manheim Central Food Pantry, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services, and Warwick Community Chest. FoodStock organizers are excited about the bands that will perform at the event. “We’ve got a great music lineup this year,” Hayden enthused. “Some of the area’s most talented musicians are coming together to help us fight hunger in our community. Straight out of Philly, Mo Lowda & The Humble recently returned from their European tour, and we’re excited to have them join us.” Mo Lowda & The Humble is the event’s headliner band. The group, which is best known for its progressive songwriting and energetic live performances, is new to FoodStock, Fliszar said. The other bands on the event lineup have played at FoodStock at one time or another. Steel Radiance has been part of the event since the beginning, performing classic rock and blues. Hydroponic Philharmonic, a Grateful Dead tribute band, is back for its second year. Corsair
Blue Jazz Orchestra is also bringing its big band sound back for another year. Back In Motion, a horn-based band specializing in rock and soul music, is returning to FoodStock after a brief hiatus. The Ogham Stones will bring Celtic rock with a kick to the music festival. More information about the sixth annual FoodStock Music Festival is available at www.foodstockpa.org or by finding the event on Facebook. Tickets may be purchased at a discount in advance at the organization’s website or at www.eventbrite.com. Full price will be charged at the gate. Those who wish to make a donation or volunteer in exchange for admission may email info@foodstockpa.org. Pictured on front:

Weaverland Sets Library Hours Living Museum from pg 1 The members of the fourth-grade class of Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH) in Ephrata, under the direction of teacher Theresa Chanko, culminated their study of Pennsylvania by creating a living museum focused on famous Pennsylvanians. Students chose people from all walks of life, including writers, businessmen, patriots and a bishop. They researched their chosen Pennsylvanian, focusing on birth dates and places along with professional achievements. Dressed in costume, each student presented an oral report to the audience and shared information on his or her display boards, which featured photos and articles about the famous Pennsylvanian. For more information, readers may call 717-738-2414 or visit www.omph.org.
Weaverland Church, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl, invites the public to its library from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday mornings through Aug. 20. Readers of all ages are invited to borrow books. The library has a selection of fiction, junior fiction, biographies and books
about the Christian life, as well as a large variety of DVDs, that may be borrowed. Guests should use the newer entrance to reach the library, which is now on the first floor. Those wanting more information may call Teresa at 717-661-7460.

Recipients of Love Your Block mini grants have begun beautification and cleanup projects on Howard Avenue and in the ChurchTowne neighborhood. Projects were selected for grants between $500 and $2,000 earlier this spring. More than 80 resident volunteers will be engaged through these projects. One project has already been completed. The Cultured Professional Network, led by resident Marquis Lupton, performed a cleanup outside and on the façade of the Crispus Attucks Community Center on May 18. This was the first step of the group’s initiative to rehabilitate the space and provide programming for community education. Upcoming projects include the following. Neighbors on the 100 block of Howard Avenue planned to replace a blighted fence on June 8, as well as install a trash can to help reduce litter. They also plan to purchase trash carts that can easily fit through baker’s alleys between houses. The carts will be given to neighbors. Trash can installation is planned for the end of June. For more information, readers may contact Cooper Linde at 717-858-2373 or cooperlinde@gmail.com. Neighbors on the 500 block of North Street plan to scrape and repaint porches, railings, and doors on Saturday, June 22. They also plan to purchase trash carts for residents on the block. The project’s contact, Erin Dixon, may be reached at 717-224-5056 or eldixon@hotmail.com. The San Juan Bautista Plaza will install a trash can, as well as lighting and planters around the fencing on Lime Street. The community center will host public engagement workshops to design public art for the plaza. The project is slated to occur at the end of June. To learn more, readers may contact Erica Asso at 717-283-0287 or ezapata@hbgdiocese.org. Neighbors on the first block of Howard Avenue will install trash cans and partner with Church World Service to organize recurring cleanups on the block. They will also install planters to beautify the space. The project will begin at the end of June. More information is available from Valerie Bradley at 717-333-3620 or five4hym@msn.com. Neighbors on Atlantic Avenue will scrape and repaint railings and
