Craft Show To Help Support NHSAP By Ann Mead Ash
As the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) celebrates its 40th anniversary, Sue Noll, secretary/treasurer for NHSAP, is looking forward to featuring a few new acts in the lineup, including the Temple Avenue jazz quintet, Vinegar Creek Constituency, Dreadnought Brigade, and Jubilation Jazz. But Noll is especially looking forward to the concert in the park on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7 p.m. “John Bressler has not been here for many years,” said Noll of the pianist who is originally from Churchtown and who now tours internationally. Members of The Ziggy Zone team (pictured) marched in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County in memory of Allan James “Ziggy” Ziegler. More than 1,000 participants walked at the track at Conestoga Valley High School on June 7 and 8 to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
New Holland police officer Wendell Metzler and his family had participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County for many years in support of a close friend who was fighting cancer. Then, in the summer of 2018 on a family vacation to Virginia Beach, Metzler had to be taken into the emergency room due to excruciating pain and the sudden inability to walk. He was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. “As a public servant, I had always taken great pride in helping others,” shared Metzler. “Through my times as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, and police officer, I never had to rely on others for help ... but God humbled me.” See Relay For Life pg 10
Getting There Transportation Ministry Serves ELANCO By Ann Mead Ash
In March 2018, CrossNet Ministries launched a transportation ministry in cooperation with the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. “We had a few people who needed rides,” said Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet. A year later, the ministry is fulfilling about 10 ride requests a month. “We are ready for more people to take advantage of this (service),” said Yunginger. The service is available to both adults and children, with adults being served by a group of area volunteers. Rides for children are provided by Kiwanis Club members for specific appointments including medical, dental, and mental health, along with education-related needs. Children must be

“That was good ice cream and chocolate milk,” Danelle Fernandez commented as she wiped the drips off her fingers. The miniature ice cream cones and samples of chocolate milk have long been a staple of Family Farm Days at Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz. Fernandez, who lives in Pasadena, Md., but grew up in Lancaster, arranged for her sisters and their father to meet her at Oregon Dairy when Family Farm Days opened on June 11. “I remember coming as a kid, and I wanted to share the fun and the chocolate milk with my daughter,” she explained. Adelaide Fernandez, 10 months, appeared to be having a blast as she
munched on chicken tenders and french fries, licked up vanilla ice cream, and dug through field corn at a sensory table. Her cousins, 3-year-old Ellison Stafford and 18-month-old Whitfield Stafford of Philadelphia, also enjoyed themselves. The brothers particularly liked seeing the pot-bellied pigs, a young steer, and two breeds of chickens. Riding in the tractor-pulled wagons that shuttled visitors to and from the farm, as well as taking a barrel train ride, were highlights for the Staffords. “It’s a great family-oriented event,” Danelle’s sister, Darcy Stafford, said. “I was, of course, excited to see my family, and my children love seeing the farm.” Attendees of Family Farm Days, which ran through June 13, were treated to a tour

And that - getting information out - was at the heart of Family Farm Days. A cooperative effort between Oregon Dairy Family Farm and the Lancaster County Agriculture Council, the event aimed to spread the word about farming and its importance for individuals and the community. of the dairy barn; samples of several types of beverages, including kombucha and two varieties of chocolate milk; educational performances in the barnyard theater; a petting zoo; a scavenger hunt; stream studies; and a mobile aquaponics lab. Dairy royalty was on hand, and there were several livestock-themed costumed characters wandering the grounds. Folks could also purchase rides on miniature ponies and full-sized horses and take turns at a corn launcher. Pennsylvania Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding was slated to visit on June 13. Among the numerous exhibits from farm-related organizations, Master Gardeners Dyan Eisenberger and Jane Kintzi staffed a display from Penn State Extension on the spotted lanternfly. “It’s important to advertise current events that affect farmers and other people,” Eisenberger said. The spotted lanternfly is a highly invasive insect that has been found in southeastern Pennsylvania. Although some people think it is pretty, with white and red black-spotted wings, it destroys crops and particularly impacts the grape, hardwood, tree fruit, landscape, and nursery industries. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Agriculture are both working to keep the insect contained. A quarantine order has been issued, requiring all items moving within or out of the area to be inspected so that the transport of any living life stage of the pest can be prevented. “It’s hatching from April to July, so people will start seeing them,” Eisenberger said. The nymphs start at about a quarterinch in size, but they grow to four times that size. Folks who see evidence of spotted lanternflies are asked to report them at http://extension.psu.edu/spotted -lanternfly. Family Farm Days proved to be an effec-

Morales Receives Scholarship For PFEW During the week, students form companies that compete against each other for the equivalent of three years using a college-level simulation. The companies are evaluated on management skill, return on net assets, a marketing and advertising campaign, and a presentation to stockholders. Business volunteers serve as company advisers, suggesting available options and sharing their own experiences as students face many of the same decisions real executives confront every day. The competition is designed to help students learn the value of teamwork, communication, and leadership. PFEW also features dozens of speakers presenting seminars and discussions on topics like the relationships of business with labor, government, and consumers. Students also hear talks about business ethics, management and leadership skills, the economic system future, the global marketplace, money and banking, business operations, careers in business, and marketable skills.

Nathan Morales, a sophomore at Octorara High School and the son of Josh and Maggie Lee of Gap, has been granted a full scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW). The weeklong economic education program offers students an inside look at the private enterprise system and the workings of the free market. Morales will attend Week 3 of the five, one-week sessions offered at Lycoming College. Pennsylvania teachers and counselors recommend the candidates, who are then reviewed by the PFEW staff. Admission is based on motivation to learn as demonstrated through essays submitted by the applicants. Those accepted are awarded scholarships, which cover all program costs, excluding a nominal registration fee and transportation to and from Williamsport. When students arrive for their one-week session in July or August, they are housed on the campus in dormitories, where they experience a taste of college life.

returned etching sheets for the Ephrata area program, representing more than 1,360 miles walked. Children will have an opportunity to win prizes at the completion of the program. Those who turn in their etching sheets with at least three completed etchings will receive a prize, and those who complete four etchings will be eligible for a chance to win one of three grand prizes. A program guide, called a Sky Map, is available for free at the three participating libraries. It contains the clues a family needs to locate each launch pad. The libraries will also provide a separate etching sheet that participants can use to make a rubbing with a crayon or pencil at each launch pad. The program also has a Facebook page, where participants can post photos of their hunts for the posts and offer tips to others to help find them. The program is funded through WellSpan’s Community Partnership Grant Program. These grants are awarded to nonprofit organizations that improve the health of the communities and people WellSpan serves. sends a synopsis of details to the volunteers to see who might be available to drive. For adults, Burda sends requests made by women to female drivers and for men to male drivers. For children, Burda contacts Mike Ireland, who coordinates the Kiwanis volunteers. Volunteers’ driving records have been checked, and they have undergone all the required clearances. “We are focused on helping the family get the children where they need to go,” said Ireland, who is a volunteer driver himself. Ireland recalled one mother and her children whom he drove a few miles to a school meeting. “On the way, she was nervous about (the meeting),” said Ireland. When the meeting ran long, the woman was apologetic, but then Ireland asked her how it went, and she relaxed and began to share. “She commented that the teachers understood her situation,” said Ireland. “She came away knowing she could resolve the problem, and that relieved a lot of stress,” Ireland noted. “Helping her go (a few miles) to an appointment was a super big deal for her.” Marcia Leahy, a CrossNet board member, volunteers to drive adult women. I have a car in my driveway, and I can go wherever I want whenever,” said Leahy, who regularly drives a woman who struggles to get to necessary medical appointments. “It has been a reminder of how many layers there are in those difficult circumstances,” noted Leahy. “Life is hard when you can’t do those things.” “ We always get responses about how people appreciate (the service) and how nice (the drivers) are,” shared Yunginger. “They don’t just drive; they engage. That means a lot.” In early 2018, LCBC Ephrata and New Holland Toyota partnered to help CrossNet purchase a van. The Kiwanis Club members utilize the van to transport children. Yunginger made sure the vehicle was furnished with three sizes of car seats to accommodate children who need them. Qualifying children in need of vision examinations and/or glasses may also benefit from the Empower the Cross Fund, which was created by a partnership between CrossNet and Optometric Associates in New Holland. Purchases of certain types of eyewear help to provide children with vouchers for free exams and glasses. Transportation to and from the vision appointments can be provided by Kiwanis Club volunteers. Individuals who are in need of transportation may contact Burda at 717-355-2454 to learn if their request qualifies. Those who would like to volunteer to drive for the ministry may contact Burda as well. More information about CrossNet Ministries may be found at https://elancocross.org.

Relay For Life from pg 1 Metzler shared about his experience in celebration of one year of survivorship during the opening ceremony as the 2019 Honorary Survivor at the 26th annual Relay For Life of Lancaster County at Conestoga Valley High School. “I will forever be in debt to all the people who surrounded me in my weakest moments with prayers, meals, cards of encouragement, visits, and phone calls,” said Metzler to the audience gathered around the track at the school. “(Relay For Life) is a special time to honor those who have lost their fight with cancer and support those who are fighting cancer today.” Relay For Life of Lancaster County kicked off on the evening of June 7, with 112 teams and more than 1,000 total participants taking turns walking around the track overnight until a closing ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 8. This year’s event raised more than $672,462 for the American Cancer Society. Organizer Stephanie Delp noted that the Lancaster event is the second-largest in the nation in terms of total funds raised. Delp said that she always looks forward to the opening ceremony, which includes a survivor lap. Cancer survivors - whether diagnosed a few days or a dozen or more years ago - are invited to take a lap around the track as the crowd cheers them on. A Caregiver Lap held later in the evening

honors those individuals who have stood by their loved ones on their journeys with cancer. The 2019 Honorary Caregiver was Cheyanne Leid of New Holland. At the recent Relay, luminarias emblazoned with the names of people who have died of cancer surrounded the track, and a special luminaria ceremony took place at dusk to remember those lives touched by cancer. Dr. David Cziperle, a thoracic surgeon with the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, spoke to the audience before the luminarias were lit and the names of those being honored were read. “It’s very moving,” described Delp. “Really the best way to say it is that Relay For Life is not an event; it’s an experience.” Plenty of fun activities were peppered into the mix to spur walkers on as they persevered through the night, including a movie on a big screen, games and relays, frozen T-shirt and Twister competitions, yoga and Zumba, children’s entertainment, trivia, crafts, and themed laps like Ready for Beddie and Here Comes the Sun. Music was blasting for the duration of the event, with live performances by Matt Wheeler, Mandy Salimbeni, Dreadnought Brigade, Peggy Kurtz Keller, Black Cat Band, and Leo DiSanto of Vinegar Creek Constituency. A committee dedicated to the success of Lancaster’s retail community is planning a special shopping experience in Lancaster city for a week in July. Retailers in the city are encouraged to sign up to participate in Indie Retail Week and offer a special deal or promotion of their choosing from Monday, July 15, through Sunday, July 21. Independent retailers can sign up to participate at www.visit lancastercity.com. The only two
requirements for participation are that retailers must have a brickand-mortar business within the city limits of Lancaster and they must offer a special value for customers during Indie Retail Week. The FUNguys For Life team (pictured) was one of 112 teams that participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County on June 7 and 8 at Conestoga Valley High School. Team captain and Cochranville resident Brenda Shelton (back, second from right) said the team name is in honor of her husband, Robert Shelton, who had a mushroom business and passed away in 2009. The FUNguys For Life raised $18,312 toward the event grand total of more than $672,462. uals who have family and friends who are survivors or who have lost their battle with the disease. Others, like Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute oncology nurse Julie Justice, know innumerable people affected by cancer. This was the eighth year that Justice participated in the Relay For Life. She served as team captain for the 52-member Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health team, which raised more than $22,735. “It’s very rewarding to see our patients that are survivors at the walk and to be able to celebrate their journey with them,” Justice
said. “Cancer patients are a very special population. They’ve got resilience.” Relay For Life got its start in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., to raise money for the American Cancer Society. He raised $27,000, and the following year 19 teams took part in a similarly styled fundraising event and raised $33,000. Since beginning its partnership with Pennsylvania Vision Foundation two years ago, VisionCorps has provided 1,200 vouchers to people in 10 counties.
Those eligible for this program include low-income adults and children residing in Pennsylvania who do not have vision insurance. Eligible residents must first schedule an appointment with VisionCorps staff to complete the required verification paperwork. In affiliation with Pennsylvania Vision Foundation, Vision Benefits of America will then provide a printed voucher, accepted at any optometrist listed in their network. sang the national anthem, and James Reichenbach, president of Lancaster City Council, spoke about what military service meant to his family. Ray D’Agostino, who is retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, spoke about comrades who did not return, and how it felt knowing they had made the ultimate sacrifice. Between speakers, members of the Blue Star Moms read the names of America’s wars, including the time frame and number of casualties from each. Lisa spoke about how the number of roses created a visual of how many soldiers are buried in the cemetery, and she invited everyone present to place roses on veterans’ graves throughout the 22 acres of the cemetery. The service closed with a gun salute performed by VET 21 Honor Guard, the playing of taps, and a prayer. Lisa said that the Red Rose chapter has about a dozen members, but that the group is interested in growing. More information about the Red Rose Blue Star Moms may be found at www.redrosebluestarmoms.org or by searching for “Red Rose Blue Star Moms on Facebook.

When Lisa Colon’s son, Isreali, went to Army boot camp in 2016, Lisa looked for other area mothers who would understand that experience and offer answers and support. “I have a friend at church whose son was in the Marines, but he was out by then, said Lisa. When Isreali was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., Lisa found an online group called Fort Riley Mothers of Soldiers made up of women who supported each other. Some of the members of the Fort Riley group were part of National Blue Star Mothers of America Incorporated, a group of mothers who have children currently serving or who are veterans. “(National Blue Star Mothers) was founded in 1942 when someone put an ad in the newspaper calling for moms of armed service members, explained Lisa. “When they got more than 1,000 responses, they decided to form an official group. National Blue Star Mothers of America was chartered by Congress in 1960. Lisa learned that no Blue Star Mothers group existed in Lancaster, and she reached out to the group’s national-level representatives. Armed with the information they sent and with the help of Dawn Wardell, a friend from Calvary Church where Lisa attends, Lisa set out to gather the five members she needed to charter a group. Word of mouth brought her the women she needed to designate the five officers, and the group submitted paperwork to the National Blue Star Mothers in September 2018. When they learned of a Lehigh Valley group within the 30-mile marker range, they had to ask that group’s per-
mission to form. “(The Lehigh Valley group members) were excited for us, said Lisa, who completed the charter over the phone with the national vice president and a former national president. “ We became the founding mothers of the Red Rose Blue Star Moms, said Lisa, who said the red rose was chosen as it is the symbol of Lancaster County. The group currently meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in room 314 of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome. The chapter began taking part in efforts such as Valentines for Vets, which provided cards to area veterans through the local Veterans Affairs office. Lisa added that the chapter is involved in a similar effort that sends birthday cards to deployed service members whose birth dates are provided by their parents. On Memorial Day, the chapter held its first event at Lancaster Cemetery. Called “A Rose for Every Stone Memorial Day Tribute, the event featured live music, speakers, and more than 1,000 roses from the Memorial Day Flower Foundation. “We joined forces and raised more than $1,100 to place (roses) on the tombstones of 1,037 veterans in the Lancaster Cemetery, said Lisa. A number of other local veterans’ groups took part in the event, including the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS Post 19, Lancaster City Republican Committee, and Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Additionally, the Red Rose Blue Star Moms placed flags on the graves on May 25. At the ceremony, Rebekah Hill

have information tables set up. The tradition of holding Elverson Day in the Park began in 2011, when Elverson residents celebrated the borough’s centennial by gathering at Livingood Park on a Saturday at the end of June. The event has been held each year since. “We get a lot of people from Morgantown - really people from all over. A lot of the Elverson people walk (to the event), and we encourage to them to do that since parking is limited,” said Katie. “Our best estimate is that between 300 and 500 (attend). We try to keep everything free other than the food and the hot air balloon rides.” She noted that the Elverson Day Committee begins meeting in January to prepare for the popular summertime event. “We do tweak it from year to year,” Katie said. “We look for new activities for the kids and different musicians, but we try to keep most of it the same format. People love the face painting and the pony rides, and the fireworks and the Chester County Band are both staples.” In the case of inclement weather, the event will be held on Sunday, June 30. Postponement information will be posted at www.elversonboro.org.
