Focus on Firebirds and Camaros
BY ANN MEAD ASHSteveLoewen, one of the organizers of the Vintage Sights and Sounds New Holland Antique Car, Gas Engine, and Tractor Show, always has a reason for choosing the theme of the show. For the 42nd annual event, which will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 9, beginning at 9 a.m., Loewen has chosen “Firebirds and Camaros.”
In choosing the sporty sister
cars, Loewen delved into New Holland history, his own life-changing accident in 1976, and the help of a friend and neighbor following that event. “I lived on West Main Street (diagonal) to Peifer Pontiac,” said Loewen, who noted that Peifer manager Larry Denlinger lived two houses west. When the accident left Loewen in a wheelchair, Larry, whose wife, Ann, had the maiden name Peifer, helped secure Loewen’s first wheelchair van. When the first car show was organized in 1982, Larry offered to
sponsor a class of 1967 through 1969 Camaros and Firebirds. After Larry was killed in an auto accident in 2018, Loewen determined to make Firebirds and Camaros the theme in the near future. “To me, this is kind of a memorial tribute to Larry Denlinger for his tremendous help to me in the early days,” said Loewen. “He was one of the first guys to step up and sponsor (a class in the car show).”
Loewen pointed out that 1967 is the first model year for both cars, and he noted that the style was developed to compete with the Ford Mustang. “Ford got the jump on GM when they came out with the Mustang (in 1964),” he said, adding that John DeLorean oversaw the
birth of the Firebird. “The Trans Am Firebird had the giant bird on the hood,” he added.
As in the past, vehicles to be judged must be registered by noon on Saturday, July 8. Between 9 a.m. and noon on July 9, cars will line up on the show field. Cars will be judged in more than 30 classes. Judging for the People’s Choice Award will begin at noon and cease at 2 p.m. For a nominal fee, spectators may obtain a ballot and vote for their favorite car. The Carl S. Sauder and Tom Wagner memorial awards, along with the Best of Show and Spectator’s Choice awards, will be given to cars chosen by designated judges at 3:30 p.m.
Sousa, Cohan, and more July 4 concert planned in
BY ANN MEAD ASHKen Laudermilch, director of the New Holland Band, is known for varying the musical selections he chooses for the New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) Independence Day celebration by mixing a few new numbers into the concert program. This year’s concert will include eight new pieces along with some tried-andtrue patriotic favorites.
As in the past, the concert will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, located on the 400 block of East Jackson Street, beginning at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4. The rain date for the event is Wednesday, July 5. Traditionally, fireworks follow the concert, but this year, the display will not be held unless the Lancaster County burn ban has been lifted. Steve Nolt, who is retired from WDAC radio, will announce the concert.
For 2023, Laudermilch has selected nearly 20 numbers for the concert, and he has chosen four by John Philip Sousa, along with patriotic songs by George M. Cohan and a collection of other tunes to round out the annual concert. The concert will open with Cohan’s “Star-Spangled Spectacular,” and the composer’s “Patriotic Fantasy” will kick off the second half. Irving Berlin’s “Songs for America” will close the first half.
“To me, this is kind of a memorial tribute to Larry Denlinger for his tremendous help to me in the early days.”

Sousa, the son of immigrants, was a trombonist and orchestral violinist before becoming a conductor. In 1868, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he was apprenticed in the Marine Band. He eventually began his own concert band and toured the world.
“‘The Thunderer’ was Sousa’s favorite march,” said Laudermilch, who chose the song for the first half of the presentation. “Manhattan Beach,” which will also be played in the first half, was based on a stay of 10 weeks at the Manhattan Beach Resort where Sousa’s band played several concerts a day.

“He wrote this for his good friend who was the manager there,” said Laudermilch. The story behind “The Liberty Bell,” which Sousa wrote in Chicago while attending a conference, involves a large portrait of the Liberty Bell, which the composer saw in the Windy City, coupled with a wire from his wife that told him his son had taken part in a Liberty Bell parade in Philadelphia. “(Sousa) sat down and penned this march (following those two occurrences),” said Laudermilch. The concert will conclude with Sousa’s well known “The Stars and Stripes Forever.”
Laudermilch has also chosen some music to spotlight New Holland Band members, including “Fluffy Ruffles,” a song based on the Boston fern, which has been arranged by Rich Fitz for marimba. “It’s
dynamite,” said Laudermilch, who pointed out that “Victory in the Air” by the band’s principal saxophonist, Warren Daugherty, will be featured as well.
Other tunes in the repertoire will include the “Armed Forces Medley,” which gives veterans in the audience a chance to stand when the song representing their branch of the service is played, and “God Bless the U.S.A.” by Lee Greenwood.
The performance is one of many musical presentations brought to the park each summer by NHSAP. All shows are free to the public. Everyone enjoys a ‘feel good story’….a story about hard work, integrity, and perseverance. In today’s economy local businesses face numerous challenges and it can be a struggle just to keep the lights on. For a small garage in New Holland, this year marks 100 years in business.
Chas Wenger’s Garage was started in 1923 by Charles K. Wenger. He bought a piece of land, and built a single door garage which ini ally served as a place for storing his truck when he wasn’t hauling potatoes, fer lizer and milk. When the trucking was slow, or during the winter months, the garage was used as a place to nker around on cars in an effort to make ends meet. At this me the trolley was s ll in use and the tracks went right past the garage. As the trolley started to fade out and more people were purchasing cars, the mechanic side of the business evolved into a full- me venture. As the opera on grew, Charles brought his two sons, Floyd and Charlie (also known to family and friends as “Junie”) aboard to turn wrenches with him. Eventually an office was built-on the front of the building, and the garage space was expanded to include three bays and two gas pumps out front in the late 1930’s. The garage and office was used for many other
community ac vi es.
It was a polling facility back in the day, tax collectors setup shop and it was a spot for school students to wait for the bus. The original benches outside are s ll used today for customers to wait for their repair work.
When Charles K Wenger passed in 1973, the business was turned over to his two sons, Charlie and Floyd. Charlie took the reigns as proprietor and Floyd con nued to work as an employee un l passing away of cancer in 1980. Charlie had two daughters, Susie and Sally, and two sons, John and David. Fortunate for Charlie his two sons took an interest in mechanics therefore, leading into the third genera on of wrenching. Although the garage had grown and business was booming, there was no public sewer. Only an outhouse
could be found at Wenger’s Garage, along with a bird bath that wasn’t visited by many birds.
As a testament to long workdays and extreme dedica on, Charlie would have his barber come to the shop to cut his hair. Customers soon learned the schedule and would stop in to have their hair cut on these days as well, a true one stop shop. The garage also served as a venue to celebrate Charlie’s 80th birthday. A er many years Charlie started to slow down in his mid 80’s, but was s ll present at Wenger’s Garage 6 days a week. If you couldn’t find Charlie in the office, then he would be in the back taking a nap in what became affec onately known as ‘Charlie’s chair.’ Charlie’s wife, Sis Wenger, would frequently clean the office, and had a par cular focus on always
keeping the windows looking fresh and clean.
Wenger’s Garage has built a reputa on based on history, quality, and honesty. The proprietors (John and David) maintain the tradi on of a small town garage. One hundred years later the original office counter which used to display bubble gum, candy, and cigars, as well as the original cash register are s ll in place. The single garage door that kicked off the business so many years ago s ll remains out front, visible from Route 23 New Hollandofficially known as “Windy Town”. Luckily for all, there is now public sewer and air condi oning in the office, however, the Wenger boys s ll work very hard in those summer months with no A/C in the garage bays.
Wenger’s Garage con nues to serve as a friendly gathering place where the local town folk o en visit for morning coffee and water cooler talk. Charlie passed 5 years ago in 2018, leaving the business to his two sons, John and David. As the 3rd genera on, they con nue to maintain the legacy of a small town garage, providing quality work and honest services. The Wenger Family would like to say Thank You to all who have patronized and con nue to patronize this local garage and have helped to keep the business prospering and s ll func oning 100 years later today.
