NATIONAL POSTAL WORKER DAY is

Backpack Giveaway Collection Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash

When CrossNet Ministries director of marketing and events Lisa Kerstetter began planning the organization’s annual backpack giveaway, she knew things would have to be different. “This year, we have been forced to rethink our 2020 backpack giveaway due to the disruptions caused by COVID-19,” said Kerstetter. She was quick to add that the adjustments will not interfere with the mission of the program, which is to provide free backpacks for students in kindergarten through 12th grade who attend ELANCO School District schools. “We are still planning to hand out backpacks filled with grade-specific school supplies,” said Kerstetter. “The philosophy is still (focused on the fact that) starting the school year with a full backpack builds confidence for

A Chance To Regroup New Holland Fair Committee Looks Ahead To 2021

When Lancaster County restaurant owners learned that outdoor service would be permitted, with restrictions, in the yellow phase of the process to reopen the county, many begin thinking outside the box in order to create outdoor seating for their venues. For Gina Dissinger, who owns Lickity Split, 209 E. Main St., New Holland, with her husband, Mitch, finding outdoor table space was an issue as the eatery has little parking lot or sidewalk area to work with. “About mid-May, we began

In May, when the 14 members of the New Holland Farmers Day Association board of directors made the decision to cancel this year’s annual fair due to the uncertainty associated with COVID-19 and large public gatherings, they were met with many comments from the community that pointed to the tradition and history associated with the event. Kristie Overly, who handles premiums for the fair exhibits, told the story of a woman who met her husband at the fair more than 50 years ago. “We felt this was a very sad decision

Members of the board of the New Holland Farmers Day Association are looking forward to the 2021 fair after having to cancel the 2020 event due to COVID-19 restrictions. The year off will give the board time to implement improvements and recruit volunteers for the next fair.

students to have a successful school year,” she said. “Things will look different, but the heart of the program remains the same.” As in the past, the organization, which is located at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, will be accepting new supplies, especially sturdy backpacks, pens, spiral tablets, pocket folders, rulers, notebook paper, three-ring binders, highlighters, crayons, colored pencils, pencil cases, glue sticks, erasers, and small tissue packets. In addition, toothpaste and toothbrushes will be accepted. Donations may be made anytime, but organizers would prefer items be dropped off between Monday, Aug. 3, and Thursday, Aug. 6, when a special sort week will be held. Another option open to donors will be to fill a backpack for a child at a specific grade level. Donors interested in this option may visit https://elancocross.org, where they can click on the Events tab and then click on Backpack and More Giveaway Event. On that page, there are links to lists of items for students at different grade levels. The lists can be downloaded and printed to use when shopping. A final option is designed to be convenient for those who prefer to shop online. “To learn specifically what we need, check out our Amazon wish list,” said Kerstetter, who added that the link to the wish list may be found on the CrossNet website by clicking on Get Involved and then selecting Current Needs. Kerstetter updates the list with specific needs as donations arrive. Groups, such as businesses and churches, are invited to host a backpack drive by asking employees or members to collect items. Kerstetter has 10 bins available that can be left at participating locations to be filled. Kerstetter noted that the program relies on community engagement, and that in the past, dental and vision screenings were included, along with haircuts and food giveaways. Because those services cannot be offered as part of this year’s giveaway, which will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 11, Kerstetter asked for financial donations that could be used to purchase haircuts and other services. As in the past, volunteers will be needed to help organize donations and fill backpacks; however, due to COVID-19 occupancy restrictions, it is necessary to email Kerstetter at lisa@elancocross.org to discuss the volunteer schedule. “Last year, we gave away 585 backpacks,” said Kerstetter, adding, “This year, we anticipate we will give away 600.” Kerstetter noted that the leftover backpacks and supplies will go to meet needs during the school year. “We have requests all year long,” she said. Readers who have specific questions may call CrossNet at 717-355-2454.

New Holland Fair from pg 1 1933. This is the first time the fair has been canceled since World War II, when fairs were not held from 1941 to 1945. Not to be deterred by the occurrence, Redding noted the board is looking ahead. “We plan to focus now on making 2021 bigger and better,” she said. Among the initial plans are updating the bylaws to make the language more current and talking about ways to expand the types

premiums, backing up computers with data,” she noted. Those weeks are followed by the volunteer appreciation banquet, which is usually held in mid-November. “If you volunteer for two hours, you are invited to the banquet,” said Overly, who pointed out that special events associated with the fair, such as the baby and pet parades, tug-of-war, and animal exhibits and sale, are manned by volunteers. Redding remarked that about 250 people attend the banquet and about 500 are needed to hold the fair. Volunteers who

have building and maintenance skills to contribute are especially welcome. Following last year’s fair, board members attended the Pennsylvania State Association of County Fairs convention held each January in Hershey. Redding and Overly reported that the weeklong event introduces attendees to entertainers and food vendors along with a variety of workshops that teach on best practices, how to apply for funding, and ways to incorporate technology, among other topics. Overly noted that based on suggestions from board members and volunteers, plans for this year’s fair were underway. “We had a

lot of things we wanted to improve for 2020,” she said, adding that suggestions to make the event run more smoothly, along with ways to add to the offerings or remove outdated activities, were being considered. “It takes time to get all of those done,” said Overly. “We can’t get off the gas of planning for next year. We have to take this speed bump (and use the time to move forward for next year).” Readers who are interested in learning more about the fair may search for “New Holland Fair” on Facebook. something worthwhile in front of the (youngest members).” Fair president Paulene Redding agreed, citing all the restrictions and uncertainties, even now that the county has moved to green. “It was a really hard decision,” said Redding. “We put a lot of effort into discussing everything.” The first New Holland Fair was held in 1927, with the organization incorporating in

Improvements have already been made to the air quality and lighting in the exhibit area. Overly noted that there is much more to the fair than what spectators see during the four days it is held each fall. “There’s a lot of cleanup when the fair is over,” she noted. “The whole next week and the week after for me is cleaning up

from pg 1 researching what other restaurants around the country that were in green were doing,” recalled Gina. “We realized we had limited options since our restaurant only has 13 tables, and you can only open at 50% capacity (in the yellow phase).” Realizing that it would be financially impossible to use only that limited space and offer takeout service, Gina and Mitch began to brainstorm. “We started walking around (outside) and looking at the beautifully landscaped church next door,” said Gina, who noted that she and Mitch have had a positive relationship with Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., since the restaurant opened in 2010. “I reached out to (the church),” said Gina, who noted that the church board met to discuss the possibility only a few days later. “They called and said, ‘Yes, we’re on board,’” reported Gina. “(They said) to not only use the side (lawn), but the front lawn (of the church) as well.” Next, the Dissingers set about figuring out what kind of tables would best fit in the allotted area and how to fund them. For a week, Gina hunted for a deal on tables that seated eight, traveling to Parkesburg to pick up a number of them. She ordered black and white striped umbrellas that she admitted remind her of her favorite Cape May, N.J., vacation spot. The Dissingers were able to fit four tables on the lawn alongside the church, and there is room for two more on the Main Street side. Gina found four sponsors for the tables. An anonymous donor funded one in the name of CrossNet Ministries, and the New Holland Elementary School sixth-grade class sponsored a table and dedicated it to the Class of 2026. Another table was sponsored in honor of the late Ed Sprecher, former police chief in New Holland, and Lyons & Hohl Paving of East Earl funded another. The tables opened on June 15 at 4 p.m. Currently, hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m. On Fridays, the tables are also open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tables are reserved for Lickity Split customers. Each table is numbered and has a full food and ice cream menu available, and ordering instructions are included. “Right now, (customers may) order online or call from the table, and we will bring the food out to you,” said Gina. Customers may order through www.lickitysplit.info or by calling 717-354-4986. Those who order from the tables are asked to wear a mask during the time the food is delivered. The necessary items for sanitizing are located at each table. The Dissingers intend to keep the outdoor tables open as long as the weather is conducive to outside dining. Gina, who launched the Essential Businesses Open in New Holland Facebook page, expressed gratitude for the response she received from the community. “(The page) has been instrumental in helping all our local businesses, (and it) has brought our town together to help each other out,” she said. “The town (of New Holland) has been so supportive (of us).”

Coconut oil is a great source of fat. Consuming fat helps you stay satisfied longer and also gives you a boost of energy. Almost 50% of the fatty acid in coconut oil is lauric acid, which also enhances the immune system. So for those reasons alone, you should try adding coconut oil to your coffee! - 1 cup brewed coffee - 1 tsp. Golden Barrel Coconut Oil - 1/4 tsp. cocoa powder (optional) Brew coffee. Pour hot coffee in blender. Add coconut oil and cocoa powder. Blend for 20 seconds or so until emulsified and frothy. Pour into mug and enjoy immediately.
