An emphasis on music
Terre Hill Days scheduled
BY ANN MEAD ASH“Thepush is to get bigger and more well-known bands to Terre Hill Days,” said John Styer, one of the organizers of the annual event. With that goal in mind, the Terre Hill Days committee reached out to sponsors this year. “We had a great response,” reported Styer. “The local business community stepped up.” The result is three headliner bands that meet the “bigger and wellknown” requirements.
This year’s Terre Hill Days will be held in the Terre Hill Park, 210 Lancaster Ave., Terre Hill, on Thursday through Sunday, July 13 through 16. Events will open at 5 p.m. on July 13 and Friday, July 14, and at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 15. A church service and gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m. on July 16.
“On Thursday, we will have The Nomads,” said Styer, who noted the popular local eight-piece band
will return to the venue at 7 p.m. on July 13. “On Friday, we will have The Jess Zimmerman Band,” Styer noted, pointing out that Nashville recording artist Jess Zimmerman sang at Terre Hill Days several years ago as part of a church praise team. The Jess
Zimmerman Band will play starting at 6:30 p.m. on July 14. On July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the Josh Squared trio will grace the park stage with oldies, pop, and country music. “That will be fun for Saturday,” said Styer.
Carnival rides will be open all
Feeling the power
BY ANN MEAD ASHDiana Roth, area representative for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was thrilled to hear the response from a parent whose child was attending the New Holland Power Camp when Roth asked if her child was enjoying the experience.
“I asked a parent today if her child had fun,” said Roth. “And she said, ‘Yes.’ She said her child’s only complaint was that this is the last day. I like to hear that.”
The New Holland camp, which was held from June 19 through 22, is one of three held in the county

three nights again this year, and the event will kick off on July 13 with Joyful Canvas’ intricate face painting for children of all ages starting at 6 p.m. Other features that night will include Magic by Mr. Sneakers beginning at 7 p.m.
Styer pointed out that the Friday
evening car cruise is always popular. The Classic Car Cruise will open at 6 p.m. on July 14. There is no entry fee for car owners. “Just bring your car and park it and enjoy the band,” said Styer, who added that the Country Conjuring Magic Show will open at 6 p.m. as well.

A magical journey
BY ANN MEAD ASHWhen magician Brett Myers was growing up in Chambersburg, he remembers his family visiting Lancaster County to attend presentations at Sight & Sound Theatre. In 2011, he and his wife, Labrina, moved to the area. For a time, the couple traveled doing magic shows in partnership with nonprofit organizations, but moving to the county made them consider producing a local show.
“We thought it would be a great place to learn and grow and develop as artists,” said Brett, who stopped traveling in 2015 and connected with a local theater to do a stationary
show that allowed for illusions that are harder to do on the road. By 2018, he and Labrina had outgrown the theater space and began searching for something larger.
In 2019, the former Rainbow’s Comedy Playhouse became available. “We moved in on January 1, 2020, and we worked tirelessly for 10 weeks to renovate,” recalled Brett. The Magic & Wonder Dinner Theater was ready to open in March of 2020, but then COVID-19 restrictions hit. “We went into a holding pattern and officially opened July 1, 2020,” Brett said. The Magic & Wonder Mystery variety show has been running ever since.

Magic & Wonder
About 10 years ago, Brett partnered with WJTL to give a magic show at the Junction Center as a fundraiser for HOPE International. “(HOPE International is) an organization that makes poverty disappear,” said Brett. Magic & Wonder recently partnered with The Factory Ministries for a food drive that brought
in more than 450 pounds of food along with cash donations for The Factory Market food pantry. Area veterans have been the recipients of the theater’s generosity as well. “We are doing free dinners and shows for veterans and police officers,” said Brett of the special running through Saturday, July 8.
Interested veterans and police officers may call the box office at 717-323-3077 to learn about the special. “(At the show) they need to (present) identification that certifies they are an active or retired veteran or a police officer,” Brett noted.
In addition to the magic show, the theater has recently
added Jukebox Jive running during 3 p.m. matinees on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays through the end of October. “It’s not just a music show. It has a variety of circus arts woven throughout,” said Brett, who noted that audience members will “experience the wonder decades of ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s.” “We take you to a soda pop shop. We go to the age of Aquarius, Woodstock, and the awesome ’80s,” said Brett, who noted that six vocalists and dancers from around the country will portray greasers, jocks, cheerleaders, and nerds in the two-hour show that includes the greatest hits from the aforementioned decades. “It celebrates the golden age of rock ’n’ roll, and it takes (audience members) on a stroll down memory lane.”
Dinners at the theater now include full-course meals with entrées, appetizers, soup, and desserts.

High school youths and adults are invited to learn about “The Inerrancy of Scripture,” taught by Marshall Zimmerman. Sustaining nature
BY ANN MEAD ASHKatrina Lefever, sustainable landscape coordinator with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), vividly remembers the first BioBlitz held at MCC in 2022. “Last year, we had it in September, and we held a pawpaw fest as well,” she recalled. “We planted pawpaws in the woods and had some fruit tasting.”
While the first blitz, organized by Lefever along with naturalists Lydia Martin, Cameala Freed, and Rita Tomassetti was held in the fall. Lefever believed a summer date would attract a wider age group. The second MCC BioBlitz and Nature Fest will be held on the MCC grounds at 21 S. 12th St., Akron, on Saturday, July 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Those wishing to join a BioBlitz team, which will count insects and plant life using the iNaturalist app or pen and paper, should register at https://mcc.org/forms/2023 -mcc-bioblitz-nature-fest by Friday, July 7. The Nature Fest is open to the public, and it will include live music, art, and plant giveaways. Children are welcome with adult supervision.
Each BioBlitz team will work with a naturalist to explore the MCC campus. “There’s a stream back in the woods, and there’s a micro meadow in the Welcoming Place, which hosts many butterflies,” said Lefever.
At the Nature Fest, there will be information tables, and visitors will have the opportunity to work at an art table overseen by Tomassetti. There will be a plant and plug giveaway of native plants. Lefever explained that a plug is a very small plant. “There is soil, but it’s mostly root,” she said. A musical group called Nodding Onion will also play.
“(Nodding Onion) uses PlantWave technology, which is technology that attaches electrodes to a plant,” explained Lefever, who noted that every plant creates its own music.
Lefever has been at work to change the landscape at MCC since early 2021. “We made the move to ecological landscaping, which is trying to live with rather than against nature,” said Lefever, who noted that the effort is based on the work of Doug Tallamy, a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, who has been studying the relationship between plant life and insects for decades. “Right now, our insect and bird numbers are plummeting,” said Lefever.
“We have to make changes so we are not fighting nature but living with nature.” To that end, Lefever has identified and removed invasive plants on the property and replaced them with native plants. “It has made a difference already,” she said.
Now, Lefever would like to share the changes with area residents via the BioBlitz. “We are aware of the amazing bounty here,” she said. “There’s a wonderful number of native plants (on the property). We want to share that with the public and make them aware.”

Terre Hill Days
On July 15, the event will open at 9 a.m. with a la carte breakfast items offered for sale in the pavilion. The arts and crafts fair will also open at 9 a.m., and at 11 a.m., live music will be provided by Saved Renegade. “We have entertainment Saturday afternoon,” said Styer, noting that Dutchyfunk, a New Orleans-style brass band, will play at 2 p.m. The airplane candy scramble will be held at 3:30 p.m. that day, with the tug of war scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The ax throwing in a controlled environment will be on site again this year, as well. Fireworks are planned for 10 p.m. on Saturday night.
“Fair food” that will be offered for sale at the event will include Mexican food,

The overall theme of this year’s camps is “Greater,” based on John 3:30. Each day begins with worship featuring the worship band from the host church and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The worship team and speaker set the tone for the day,” said Roth. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport.
Roth said that the volunteer coaches who work with the children are often high school coaches, and many serve for multiple weeks. At
New Holland, students could choose to participate in basketball, football, field hockey, soccer, or lacrosse. Because the New Holland camp attracted nearly 150 students, half ate lunch while the other half met with their huddle leaders for Bible study. Both high school and middle school students serve as junior huddle leaders.
“A huddle is five to seven students and a leader,” said Roth. “Huddle leaders are with campers leading, guiding, encouraging, all through camp.” Fifteen coaches and 51 huddle leaders took part in the New Holland camp.
Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, snack, and closing assembly.
“It is a faith-based camp,” noted Roth. “The whole reason we do camp is to share the Gospel.” With that goal in mind, boy campers compete against girl campers to raise funds to hold similar camps in the Philippines and Myanmar. “Our goal is to raise $7,000 from all (three Lancaster County) camps combined,” said Roth.

Community improvement grants awarded
The Giant Company, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, recently announced the 23 recipients of its 2023 Healing the Planet program. The grants were awarded in support of projects that address food waste prevention, reduction and recovery across the Giant Company’s operating area. The recipients were named at an event held on June 22 at Dickinson College in Carlisle, which received $20,000 to complete an anaerobic digester project for conversion of community food waste and dairy manure into biogas and grid-tied electricity.
Grants range from $2,500 to $20,000. Projects located in the Giant Company’s operating areas within Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia were eligible. Funding for the grants was provided by customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores who rounded up their grocery purchase to the nearest dollar from March through May, benefiting program partners such as the Rodale Institute and Planet Bee Foundation.
The following local Pennsylvania organizations are the recipients of 2023 Healing the Planet grants: City of Lancaster, Lancaster Compost Co-Op; Creative Community Grow, Harrisburg; Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, York; and York Fresh Food Farms.
All funded projects address food waste prevention, reduction and or recovery and can include community composting, increased access to compost for agricultural producers, educational programs regarding food waste prevention, reduction and
recovery, and diversion of food waste from landfills. Community gardens are eligible for funding but must have a food waste prevention, reduction or recovery component, such as education.
Since 2021, the Healing the Planet program has awarded grants to 110 recipients for projects connecting communities to green spaces and improving or helping to protect local waterways and water resources.

Workshop to focus on community gardens
Penn State Extension’s Lancaster County Master Gardeners will host “Gather, Connect and Grow: A Workshop for Community Gardeners” on Saturday, July 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The free event will be held at Penn State’s Southeast Agricultural Research and Education Center, 1446 Auction Road, Manheim, which is a working farm that is home to dozens of vegetable, field crop and environmental research projects and one of the largest flower trials in the country.
Last year, when Master Gardener Sue Hynicker began researching the county’s community gardens, she discovered that information was hard to find, and none of the gardens or gardeners were connected to each other. She learned that some of the gardens are managed by township staff members while others are organized by community leaders, and they vary in size, ranging from large fields divided into smaller areas to city lots that are between buildings.
The community gardening workshop is meant to bring everyone together to share resources. During the workshop, Hynicker will provide information she received earlier this year at a conference hosted by the American Community Garden Association. Additionally, a representative of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will provide details to help community gardeners find ways to locally donate any extra food they grow. Other topics will include best practices, pros and cons of tilling, cover crops and small space gardening. Tours of the Master Gardeners’ five idea (demonstration) gardens will be available.
To register for the workshop, email Hynicker at poodie53@comcast.net.
