NHELC Reopens, Launches Kitchen Campaign By Ann Mead Ash
Children who stay at New Holland Early Learning Center during the day are helping in the Sprouts for Peace Garden located on the grounds of the New Holland Mennonite Church, where the day care center is located. The center reopened on June 15 in accordance with state guidelines.

Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16
When New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC), located in the New Holland Mennonite Church at 18 Western Ave., New Holland, reopened on June 15, the nearly 100 children who are cared for at the center each day walked into a place that had changed since the day care closed under COVID-19 restrictions in March. Not only were there fresh paint and mulch and a new pavilion in the play area, there were also individual containers for sand and clay and a mask for each child to pick up in the church foyer. According to assistant director Jen Morales, changes were obvious to families when they walked in the door. “Drop-off and pickup procedures are different,” said Morales, who noted that parents no longer take children to their
In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16.

Combining her artistic creativity and her love of reading, Ellyn Honey has created a Little Free Library filled with free books for adults, youths and children. The library is located at 3226 Morgantown Road, Mohnton, in
the parking lot of Honey Spas, where Honey serves as operations manager. As part of the Little Free Library program, local residents are invited to take a book or donate a book. Each book in Honey’s library is labeled, “Always a Gift. Never for Sale.” There is also a guest book located inside the box that visitors may sign. Honey said she has seen similar libraries in her travels and wanted to create one of her own. “I saw one in Virginia in a national park type of place (and) I am a big fan of reading,” she said. “I created a Facebook page for the library, and I put (information) on the local Facebook pages like In Twin Valley and Robeson Residents.” Initially, Honey filled the box See Little Free Library pg 6

support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time, Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining stateissued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide
“We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability, said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it. Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its existing participants stable, thanks to

housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally, Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services. “We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company, said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community. The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event, Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like. The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. For more information about the EPC Golf Outing, to register to play, or to sponsor the event, visit www.epcgolfouting .com. To learn about the services GSS offers in Lancaster and Chester counties, individuals may visit www.goodsamservices.org.

NHELC from pg 1 classrooms. Instead, the church foyer has become command central for NHELC. It is there that temperatures are gauged and children are checked to be sure they are wearing the appropriate masks before moving to their individual classrooms. The changes also call for more handwashing and the disinfecting of toys between play groups. “If we had an industrial dishwasher, we could run toys through it,” said pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower, who noted that the kitchen in the center is in need of updating. “We cook two meals plus two snacks a day for 100 (students) in a
kitchen that was built in the 1970s,” she said. “We need to raise $145,000 to upgrade the kitchen.” Morales explained that the center has reusable dishes, but that they cannot be used under current restrictions because of the lack of an industrial dishwasher. “(We purchased those) to save money and be more conscious of the environment,” she said, noting that the center is now using disposable plates, cups, and utensils. On the first day NHELC reopened, students were able to choose from masks of a number of different styles and sizes displayed in the foyer. “That was fun because they picked masks they liked,” said RanckHower. The masks were created by Heather

Smith and Joan Colgan. According to Morales, masks worn at the center will remain there and be washed there. “Everything that comes into the center is not going home,” explained Morales, who noted that swimsuits, towels, changes of clothing, and nap blankets all fall under that category. “We will take care of the cleaning.” Although the idea of keeping masks on small children may be daunting to some, teachers at NHELC had reported few problems during the first days after reopening. One reason may be that the children are spending more time outside where wearing masks is not required. Morales noted that upcoming outdoor activities will include soccer skills training for older children and a drum circle demonstration. Ranck-Hower said that the children have also been working in the Sprouts for Peace Gardens located at the church and overseen by Ray Hurst. “They harvest and weed, and they help pick off potato bugs,” said Ranck-Hower. To decrease the likelihood of spreading any illness, children have been divided into primary care groups that do not interact with children from other groups. “They are like a family unit,” explained Ranck-Hower. NHELC director Wanda Bortzel explained that the system requires more staff. “In the morning, we would combine classes, but now they must be in their own class and stay with their same group of children,” she noted. Teachers may not move from class to class, a restriction that will not change until the county phases out of the green stage. Readers who would like more information about NHELC may visit www.creating communityforkids.com or search for “New Holland Early Learning Center” on Facebook. Individuals who would like more information about the kitchen project may call Bortzel at 717-354-4440.

Little Free Library from pg 1 with books from her own collection. “I didn’t have children’s books because my children are grown, so I went online and I bought some children’s books (for the library),” she said, noting other books have been donated by friends and employees. She said the box was put into place several weeks ago, when the coronavirus pandemic forced all local libraries to close by state mandate. The Little Free Library provides an alternative source for readers to find free books. Although the box is open 24 hours a day, those who have books to donate are asked to bring them into the showroom if the building is open. Honey will then sanitize and stamp them before placing them in the library. If the business is not open, the books can be left in the box and Honey will take care of cleaning them, stamping them and putting them back in the box. “If someone takes a book and does not return it, that’s fine. That’s what it’s here for,” she stated. “I would rather have somebody reading than not.” The library structure, which was built by Honey Spas employee David Moody, is colorfully painted with grass and flowers. Each side of the box is painted differently. One side features dinosaurs, while the opposite side sports a rainbow and a bookworm. On the back, there is a scene painted with children in mind that includes a rocket and a spaceship complete with aliens. The box is also decorated with a glass bookworm panel that Honey created. “My first hobby is painting, and my second hobby is glass fusing,” Honey noted, explaining how the library was decorated. “I wanted it to (reflect) the blue skies and flowers and grass.” As the library steward, Honey will rotate the books inside the box on a regular basis so that frequent visitors will always have a selection of books to choose from. The book box has been registered as “Ellyn Honey’s Little Free Library #99929” at www.littlefreelibrary.org. A listing of other local libraries can be found on the website. Make-A-Wish
Valid Thurs., July 9 - Wed., July 15, 2020
from pg 1 In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when the organization is able. To make those wishes come true, the organization embarked on a virtual giving week, held from April 22 to 29. Area residents responded positively to the effort, and by mid-May nearly $100,000 had been raised mainly by 18 teams and 66 participants. Dennis Heron, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, said that the organization was “blown away” by the support. “On behalf of the children and families we serve, we thank everyone who donated for their dedication to the Make-A-Wish mission, especially during these challenging times,” said Heron. On May 9, Make-A-Wish announced that the decision to turn the convoy into a virtual event had been made by staff and volunteer convoy planning committee members, and that the August date had been set. The decision was based on concern for the Make-A-Wish children and the members of the community who visit the event. No carnival will be held; however, a modified small truck convoy featuring the top 30 drivers and key sponsors will leave the auto auction during the day. The convoy will be broadcast live from the Make-A-Wish Facebook page. In addition, organizers are working to create other ways to share parts of the traditional convoy festivities, such as the food, clowns, and carnival games. Readers who would like to know more about the convoy may search for “Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy” on Facebook or visit www.wishconvoy.org. “Our convoy planning committee and volunteers are already hard at work identifying ways to make this virtual convoy an amazing event for our community, our supporters, and especially our Wish families,” said Terry Finch, one of the chairs of the convoy. “Drivers are continuing to raise funds through the new convoy date, and we’re excited about the fun new activities and technology we can use to create a successful virtual event.” In addition to postponing the convoy, the chapter has had to cancel or postpone many other in-person events that raise pivotal funds for wish-granting efforts. Make-A-Wish counts on the local community, especially truck drivers to make the rescheduled virtual convoy a success. Funds raised by the convoy have supported more than 75% of wishes granted to area children each year. Make-A-Wish hopes that area residents will continue to support the organization during this critical time because the longer the COVID-19 safety precautions are in place, the larger the number of local children waiting for wishes will continue to grow. Community support is vital as the organization looks to safely grant wishes involving travel or large gatherings. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley first began granting wishes in 1986. The Make-AWish organization grants a wish to a critically ill child approximately every 34 minutes. Readers may visit www.philadesv .wish.org to learn more.

role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinatorfriendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. In addition to the benefits of the plants, the new solar array coupled with the one currently installed on the roof of the Giant Company headquarters will reduce 4.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide in the environment and generate enough power for the entire building. In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.
