Serving ELANCO n his courtroom at 745B E. Main St., New Holland, Judge Jonathan W. Heisse Magisterial District 02-3-06, sees a variety of cases daily. “I may have a hearing today on a loose dog or I may have a murder (case),” said Heisse. In his role, Heisse sees how financial, mental health, and transportation problems affect the lives of those he serves in the greater ELANCO area, which includes New Holland, Terre Hill, East Earl, Earl, West Earl, and Brecknock. That firsthand witness has heightened his awareness of the need for services, with mental health issues being at the top of the docket. “In (the courtroom), where they have to pay fines and costs, we begin to hear the true problems of life,” he said. “To a lot of people who come in here, $200 might as well be $100,000.” The problem has caused Heisse to be creative in handing out fines. “We come up with alternatives under the law,” said Heisse, who has

given credit for community service or attending counseling sessions. “I think our community gets something out of that.” He is also looking into solutions to help transport people to counseling sessions or to bring counselors to New Holland. Heisse did not set out to become a judge, but he did always want to be a police officer. He remembers getting to know the four West Lampeter police officers in Willow Street when he was a child. “We lived on a corner, and they would stop and talk to me as a young kid,” he recalled. “I probably drove them crazy, but they always took the time to stop at the house, and it got me hooked.” After he graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School, a close friend suggested Heisse talk to the New Holland Police Department about a position. “I (did), and they gave me advice,” said Heisse, who took the civil service test in early 1990. The New Holland department soon contacted him about attending the police academy, and he became the youngest

Kelly Osborne of the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster, displays Project Lifesaver equipment.
“Project Lifesaver is for people who have cognitive impairment that makes them prone to wander,” said Kelly Osborne, community services officer and Project Lifesaver coordinator with the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop J, Lancaster County. Now that the State Police officers serving in Lancaster are affiliated with Project Lifesaver, the service is available in all areas of the county. Individuals who are enrolled with Project Lifesaver wear a bracelet connected to a transmitter set to a designated radio frequency
assigned to that person. If the individual wanders, the battery-operated device emits a signal that can be traced by law enforcement. “Should a (participant) go missing, the caregiver calls a local police department. (Police officers) plug in the frequency to pick up that specific transmitter,” explained Osborne, who noted that the equipment utilizes analog radio frequency because of its reliability. Osborne added that use of the system minimizes time and resources, needed to locate someone, and when it is employed, most participants who wander are found within 30 minutes. steal since everyone who misses the deadline must pay $4000 for each bag,” said Lynne. “These are not ordinary coins you find in your pocket change. These are rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars some dating back to the 1800’s so we won’t be surprised if thousands of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars, each verified to meet a minimum collector grade quality of very good or above, the dates and mint marks were never searched to determine collector values and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Lynne. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Coin Claim Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is very important. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $4000 for residents who miss the deadline, but for t ho s e Pen n s ylv a n i a residents who beat the 48-hour deadline the Bank Bag fee is just $2900 as long as they call the National Coin Claim Hotline before the deadline ends. “Remember this, we cannot stop collectors from buying up all the unsearched bags of coins they can get in this special advertising announcement. And you better believe with each bag being loaded with 50 U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Lynne. The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at precisely 8:30 AM this morning. That’s because each unsearched Bank Bag is loaded with nothing but U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars some dating clear back to the 1800’s. “With all these collectible U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars up for grabs we’re going to do our best to answer all the calls,” said Lynne. Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to cla i m the Un sea rched Ba n k Bags. Q SNEAK PEAK INSIDE VAULT: The phone lines will be ringing off the hook beginning at 8:30 AM this morning when the vaults open for Pennsylvania residents to claim unsearched Bank Bags. It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched bags loaded with Morgan Silver Dollars issued by the Gov’t over 100 years ago could be worth someday. After the deadline each Bank Bag fee is set for $4000, but Pennsylvania residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication and beat the deadline cover just $2900 which is a real steal for these unsearched Bank Bags.

“The vaults at Federated Mint are going empty,” said Laura A. Lynne, U.S. Coin and Currency Director for Federated Mint. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to release rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued Morgan Silver Dollars to the general public – I’m being asked, how much are the unsearched Bank Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and contains 50 Morgan Silver Dollars and just one coin alone, could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value according to The Official Red Book, A Guide Book of United States Coins. Among the items for sale are KitchenAid appliances, Ball canning supplies, OXO and Norpro kitchen gadgets, Achim mini blinds and Capitol Earth Rugs. There is also an expanded selection of home décor items, candles, gifts, cards and books, including children’s books, cookbooks and Bibles. The toy department has more games, puzzles and toys from Lego, Melissa & Doug, and Ertl, and now offers plush toys for sale. Possibly the greatest changes for the new store are seen in the hardware, sporting goods and lawn and garden categories. For the first time, the Ephrata store offers paint, including Clark+Kensington and RustOleum paints, and Wooster and Purdy paint applicators. This national distinction recognizes, once again, that the health and safety of our patients and community are at the heart of everything that we do.

The Potter’s House from pg 1 was published on Amazon, and Jakubowski has sold about 3,500 copies. “Everyone who reads it contacts me and tells me how it has impacted their life,” said Jakubowski, who noted that the book is geared toward family members who want to know how to manage their own behavior in the situation. “Families don’t know how to respond, so they react,” said Jakubowski. “The reactions are ineffective and generally lock the addiction in deeper.” The other problem Jakubowski noted is that family members
shy away from talking about the issue because of the stigma attached to drug addiction. “They think, ‘We are bad family, bad people, bad parents.’ That’s why the book is called ‘We Didn’t Raise Them This Way.’ Of course you didn’t.” Jakubowski said that often the choice to use drugs or alcohol is related to conflict and strong emotions. “We all cope with the world’s conflicts, but we all cope differently,” he said, noting that some are able to cope in healthy ways, but others are not. He listed workaholism, codependency, and

ly affliction. He encourages parents to own the fact that they cannot cause, control, or cure addiction. “That is the responsibility of the loved one,” he said. Rather, he says they should seek education and support for themselves. “Addiction is a family affliction, (so) everyone is affected,” said Jakubowski. “Everyone has to take a degree of care. Everybody has to make a commitment for wellness.” The Potter’s House, with locations in Leola, Brownstown, and New Holland, began as a program for men dealing with addictions. The Potter’s House of Ruth for women opened in 2020. More information about The Potter’s
addiction to exercise as other unhealthy choices humans make. “Addicts cope with it by medicating,” said Jakubowski. “Parents have to understand that addiction is much more than a relational or social component,” he said, noting that addiction involves spiritual, neurobiological, and emotional aspects. “There’s a spiritual component that looks like idolatry,” he pointed out. “We will all prioritize something as most important in our lives, and we only have two choices: things or God,” he said. “If we worship drugs, we become addicted.” Jakubowski specifically addresses parents in the book, noting that addiction is a fami-

Promoting Financial Fitness BY ANN MEAD ASH
Everence Financial, located at 2160 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, believes that faith and finances can be combined successfully, and the organization offers help to achieve that goal. “There are a few things we do for communities through churches or organizations that partner with Everence,” said Lynette Morales, stewardship consultant with Everence. “We provide the churches with resources to connect with their community in financial literacy.” Morales noted that resources might include helping a church or community partner with a webinar, where the church would invite com-
munity members and provide a meal. “The webinar might be how to protect your finances from fraud or money management or they can provide workshops and we provide the material resources,” said Morales, who added that inperson workshops on one of several topics, such as retirement, might also be offered. “We have programs that are tailored to a community or people who need ground-level financial management,” she said. “We also provide six free phone counseling sessions, and we make that available to our partnering churches.” Area churches that have relationships with Everence include Stumptown Mennonite Church in Bird-in-Hand,
Ridgeview Mennonite Church in Gordonville, Old Road Mennonite Church in Gap, Hershey Mennonite Church in Kinzers, Millwood Mennonite Church in Kinzers, and Churchtown Mennonite Church in Narvon. Morales also pointed out that several churches in New Holland are connected to Everence, including Petra Church, Grace Ubuntu Fellowship, New Covenant Church, and New Holland Mennonite Church. “We provide grants for churches to meet financial needs through their benevolence,” said Everence Financial stewardship consultant Lynette Morales (right) shares a laugh Morales. Project Lifesaver from pg 1 In Lancaster County, Project Lifesaver was initiated by The Pilot Club of Lancaster, a service organization, in 2008. Pilot Club members connected with Chief Mark Pugliese of the West Hempfield Township Police Department. In 2012, the project launched from that
location. Full membership police agencies that house Project Lifesaver equipment, in addition to West Hempfield, are the Lancaster City Bureau, Elizabethtown Borough, Lititz Borough, Manheim Township, New Holland/Earl Township, Stras-
burg Borough, and West Lampeter Township. Other areas of Lancaster County are covered by Troop J, located at 2099 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The program is funded by The Pilot Club and Camp Cadet of Lancaster County. Osborne noted that people
with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, autism, Down syndrome, or traumantic brain injury are good candidates for this life-saving technology. Noting that many of these individuals are cared for at home, she said, “Because of their conditions, it is imperative that
(these individuals) are found quickly. This program is like an additional safety net.” Families of Project Lifesaver participants complete an interview process and sign a contract saying they will abide by obligations, such as testing the bracelet battery daily. There is a cost
to cover equipment, but Osborne noted that scholarships are available. “ We don’t want to turn anyone away because of finances,” said Osborne. To enroll an individual with Project Lifesaver, readers may call 443-224-0569 or 717-572-2682.
