Historic Poole Forge To Offer Summer Nature Classes series of nature classes will be offered this summer at Historic Poole Forge, 1040 Main St., Narvon. All the programs, which will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, are free. Donations will be accepted. Registration is required by calling 484-797-5302 or emailing hpf1940@gmail.com. “(The programs) are to get kids out into nature - that is the main goal of offering outdoor ecology lessons,” said Dawn Ekdahl, Poole Forge executive director. Live animals will be featured during “PA Raptors and Mammals” to be presented on July 14 by Tracie Mudrinich Young from Raven Ridge Wildlife Center in Washington Boro. “She will bring some animals (such as) a red-tailed hawk and a baby skunk,” said Ekdahl. “Animals that have been brought into the rehab but are not able to be (released) back into the wild become the center’s ‘ambassadors,’

and people learn about them.” Young will also share facts and misconceptions about some of the animals. “Archery” will be the program on July 21. Children will learn basic archery and safety skills from Bob Lauffer and then practice on targets that will be set up in the site’s back ballfield. “(Lauffer) is a trained archery instructor. This is his third year back,” noted Ekdahl. “What Lives in the Stream?” will be presented on July 28. Biologist Brad Basehor will teach attendees about the creatures that live in the Conestoga River at Poole Forge. “Mammals and Streams” will be the program on Aug. 4. Sallie Gregorie, an educator with the Lancaster County Conservation District, will lead this program, which will provide information about mammals that hibernate, migrate or stay active all year long in Pennsylvania. Attendees will also learn about mammal adaptations and study animal artifacts, such as antlers.

County Treasures: Partnership Promotes Local Heritage BY ANN MEAD ASH

Debbie Saylor, curator for the Blue Rock Heritage Center, believes that she and Blue Rock president Charlie Douts bring together the expertise needed to preserve Washington Boro area history. “My specialty is Native American (cultures), but Charlie knows local history, so it’s a good partnership,” she said. The Heritage Center, located at 2251 River Road, Washington Boro, is open for special occasions, See County Treasures pg 7

Local Magician Receives Prestigious Award BY ANN MEAD ASH

Asked how it feels to receive the Merlin Award, known as the most prestigious award in magic, given by the International Magicians Society (IMS), Brett Myers of the Magic and

Wonder Theater in Paradise was characteristically modest. “As a kid, I looked up to magicians I saw on television … David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, or Penn and Teller and then to have won an award they have won is extremely humbling.” Myers was

Myers submitted a video to the international competition at the end of 2020 after being encouraged by friends. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all submissions and awards were done virtually. “After reviewing all the entries, they selected ours as the best,” said Myers, who added that he was notified of the award in February by IMS president and founder Tony Hassini. The theater is currently open up to five days per week, and Myers noted that eventually he would like to present up to 10 shows weekly. “We were in the process of working on launching a second show in Lancaster last year,” said Myers, who said that a comedy, music, and variety show was planned and postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions. “We will have more (entertainment) experiences, including (types of shows) that Lancaster County hasn’t seen,” said Myers, adding that the size and flavor of the show is unique to the area. Myers grew up in Chambersburg, but he and his family have lived in Lancaster for more than a decade. “We call this home,” said Myers, who has also performed in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. and put together the details of the current Magic and Wonder show in Branson, Mo. More information about the show is available at www.lancaster magicshow.com. Readers with questions may call 717-323-3077.

Myers explained that the show was chosen for manipulation talents. “There is a part of the act where I do sleight of hand,” he said. “It’s very difficult and showcases the magician’s skill. It requires decades of mastery and experience.” The specific part of the act Myers referred to involves silk manipulation with many brightly colored handkerchiefs appearing and disappearing. “The color makes it difficult to conceal (the handkerchiefs),” Myers explained. “Worlds of Wonder,” which is now playing at the theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise, involves the Magic and Wonder cast taking audiences to different worlds, including visiting the circus, adventures with pirates, Alice in Wonderland, and the world of the 1980s. “The show has a patriotic ending where we remember the most wonderful place that we live in a tribute to those who have sacrificed so much to make those freedoms possible,” said Myers.

Poole Forge from pg 1

Lyra Named 2021 Pawsome Pet

The series of programs will conclude on Aug. 11 with a “Wildlife/Nature Walk” presented by Phil Witman, a former teacher in the Garden Spot School District and a member of the Poole Forge board of directors. He will lead participants on a walk along the river and through the park while teaching

them about animals, including reptiles that live in the area. For the two water programs, participants will be able to wade in the creek. Ekdahl noted that swimming and using water rafts and tubes in the river is prohibited. “We allow fishing and wading in our creek.

We did a lot of creek restoration and planted a riparian buffer to improve the health and quality of the creek for fish habitats and wildlife,” she said. “(Other activities are) detrimental to the creek. Our creek is for wildlie and nature and not for swimming.” Children who attend the nature

programs must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. In the event of a severe thunderstorm, the creek-related programs will be rescheduled. For more information, visit www.historicpooleforge.org or search for “Historic Poole Forge” on Facebook.

Congratulations to 2-year-old Lyra and her human, Peggy Buhalo of East Earl. Lyra received the most votes on our 2021 Pawsome Pet contest. According to Buhalo, Lyra is pawsome because she has a unique personality. She is a resident of the University of Pittsburgh as an emotional support cat. She resides with her parents but has many uncles and aunts all around campus. The students all love her sassy ways. Her favorite place to be is with the frat boys when they are playing games. For their win, Lyra and Peggy will receive a $50 gift card to Stoltzfus Feed & Supply in Gap.

Music In The Grove Slated Heart & Soul; Aug. 22, Remington Ryde; Aug. 29, Summit Hill Bluegrass; and Sept. 5, Crow Hill. The programs will be held in the church grove, and attendees should bring lawn chairs. CDC guidelines will be followed. In the event of rain, the program will be canceled. No indoor programs will be held. For details, visit www.sjclutheran.org.

Veritas Academy Begins Renovations Veritas Academy recently began renovations on its building, which the school had officially purchased via public auction on April 27. The more than 47,000-square-foot building is located on a 12-acre property at 26 Hillcrest Ave., Leola, where Veritas had been a tenant since 1999. Built in 1955, the facility originally served as the Leola Elementary School. Most recently, the building was home to the offices of Upper Leacock Township, which owned the building and leased space to Veritas, Steps to Success Daycare and the Leola Branch of the Lancaster Public

Library. When the Lancaster Public Library System closed the Leola branch and Steps to Success decided to move to a different location, the only two remaining occupants this year were Veritas and the township. In recent years, Veritas had begun to outgrow its allotted space in their building, with a consistently growing student population. Now that Veritas has full ownership of the property, the school can both plan for expansion and better use the space in the current structure. The school’s immediate plans for the building include overhauling

the HVAC system and replacing parts of the roof, both of which date back to the building’s beginnings. In the future, the school plans to enlarge the gymnasium, add classrooms, and expand spaces to accommodate the school’s growing arts, athletics, electives, and other extracurricular programs. For decades, Veritas has generally operated with one class per grade, but the ultimate goal of the school is to expand to two classes per grade. This school year, enrollment has grown to the point that the school is adding a second kindergarten and first-grade class to accommodate

The organization is associated with the Circle Legacy Center, a Native American heritage group with an emphasis on the arts, crafts, and culture of indigenous people, and with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, which holds regular classes on animals such as bats, owls, and vultures. Saylor noted that part of her job is to identify and catalog area archaeological finds. “Once an item leaves the area, its cultural value is lost,” she explained. “That’s why the heritage center exists: so we can show people … what a wonderful heritage this whole place has.”

Among the artifacts on display are stone tools, spear tips, and pottery. Saylor has also created an exhibit of mysterious petroglyphs, which are shaped like animals. “We don’t know the meanings of these,” she said. In addition, the collection includes butcher blocks, duck decoys, and information about ice harvesting, a crucial business prior to refrigeration.

In 2020, the number of backpacks given away by the ministry decreased from more than 500 to only 460. “Our numbers were down last year because parents were homeschooling or doing virtual schooling,” recalled Kerstetter. “I think this year, (the number given away) will go back to normal,” she said, adding that she anticipates needing 550 full backpacks for the school year. Any leftover backpacks will be given away through churches and the school district on an as-needed basis.
