Day Care Holds Annual Big Truck Day By Ann Mead Ash

Memory Café Groups To Meet By Francine Fulton

Alicia Dixon, secretary at KinderHaus, starts hearing the questions from students before school ends each spring. “They start asking, ‘Are we having Big Truck Day this year?’” said Dixon. For the 2019 event held on June 24, Dixon lined up about 10 trucks to fill the parking lot at the Church of the Nazarene, 428 Ranck Road, New Holland, where the day care center is located. Among the many trucks that the 192 Kinder-Haus students had the opportunities to see and touch on June 24 were a Garden Spot Fire Rescue ladder truck, a tow truck, a limousine, a full-size bus, a waste disposal truck, a concrete truck, an ambulance from New Holland See Big Truck Day pg 5

A fire truck, a limousine, a cement mixer, and more filled the parking lot at the New Holland Church of the Nazarene when Kinder-Haus held its annual Big Truck Day. Children who attend the day care center had opportunities to touch the trucks and meet the drivers during the June 24 event.

A Memory Café, a social gathering for those with memory impairment and their caregivers, will begin meeting in Morgantown and New Holland. Sponsored by the ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community, the café will be open on the fourth Wednesday of each month at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. The next scheduled event will be on July 24. In addition, a Memory Café will be offered on the second Wednesday of each month at Conestoga Mennonite Church, 2779 Main St. (Route 23), Morgantown, from 6:15 to 7:45 p.m., with the next scheduled event on Aug. 14. Mon. thru Sat., Convenient Hours New Patients Welcome

Charlotte Leckow, marketing coordinator with Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC), is excited about the Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition (SPC) project to put gun lock kits in the hands of those who purchase firearms. “It’s a new initiative,” said Leckow of the effort that brings together SPC, the local arm of the U.S. Veterans Affairs, the West Lampeter Police Department, and Morr’s Shooting Range and Gun Shop. SPC, a creation of MHALC, is working in partnership with other local entities to put gun lock kits in the hands of each person who purchases a gun in hopes of preventing both suicides and unintentional deaths by firearm. Leckow explained that the time of purchase is a crucial moment. “(If the clerk says,) ‘We are trying to prevent suicide by firearm, and we’d like you to accept this (free) lock’ … at that possible point of interaction that may … dissuade someone having mental health issues (from using) a firearm against themself,” explained Leckow. Leckow noted that MHALC would like to see gun shop owners and personnel receive QPR Suicide Prevention Training. QPR stands for “Question Persuade Refer.” Training will teach personnel to recognize warning signs that an individual is in suicide crisis and to ask questions and refer that person for help. MHALC will hold training sessions in the organization’s Lancaster County office, 245 Butler Ave., Suite 203, Lancaster, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 2, Oct. 4, and Dec. 6. Registration is required to attend. Interested

individuals may call 717-3977461 to register. Leckow noted that customized and abbreviated training can be arranged as well. Beginning Thursday, Aug. 1, gun lock kits will be available at the MHALC office upon request to mha@mhalancaster.org. The kits, which can be given out at time of purchase, include the gun lock, a safety booklet, two wallet cards - one specifically aimed at veterans and a second from Lancaster County Crisis Intervention, and a flyer about the program. The flyer offers statistics about suicides by veterans, which currently number more than 20 per day, along with Lancaster County numbers, including the number of deaths that could have been avoided locally through education, set at 61. In September, the SPC meeting, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26, at noon, will be devoted to a discussion of veteran suicide and veteran suicide prevention. Presenters for the evening will be Robert Anderson, veteran outreach specialist, and John Lucas, suicide prevention senior social worker, from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Further details on the meeting may be found at www.stopsuicidelancaster.org/ awareness-and-events.

Pig Roast from pg 1 In 2018, TTC/Potter’s House held its annual pig roast at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River. The purpose in choosing that location was to dedicate the property with plans to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction, called Still Waters Recovery Center, on the site. This year, the organization, a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions, will hold the event at West Earl Community Park, 189 S. State St., Leola, because permits have been granted and construction has begun at the Still Waters site. The pig roast benefit will be held on Saturday, July 27, from noon to 4 p.m. Vans will be available to take attendees for tours at the Still Waters site a short distance away. For the more adventurous, kayaks and canoes will be available to paddle upriver to the site. The schedule for the drop-in experience will include a special 2 p.m. program with live worship music, testimonies, and a speaker. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, plans to discuss hope in the face of addiction issues. “The basic essence (is) us needing to recognize the seriousness of the impact of (addiction) on our communities,” said Hoover, “ … and to recognize that there is a way to

respond. We are not hopeless or helpless.” At 3 p.m., baptisms will occur in the river that runs through the park. Hoover explained, “It’s a culmination time of us recognizing that in order to find wholeness there is a necessity to put the past behind … and to connect with God’s saving grace as the higher power that we need in order to overcome the issues of the past, the roots of addiction, and to find promise and hope for the future.” The meal, which will be served throughout the event, will include roasted pig with Mama Elaine’s Almost Famous Sloppin’ Sauce, assorted side dishes, beverages, and desserts. The construction of Still Waters will be the culmination of a 15-year dream for the ministry. The plan calls for two buildings that can each house eight clients as well as a director’s home and a pavilion. Phase one of the building plan includes the first group home and the director’s house. Phase two includes the second group home and the pavilion. The organization hopes to have the first group home completed and functioning by January 2020. Hoover noted that at TTC/Potter’s House treatment does not focus solely on an individual’s addiction. “We keep … indicating that we don’t just see the addiction as the problem,” explained Hoover. “There are factors that contribute to why some people resort to chemicals. Our purpose is to help individuals find freedom from the factors that led them into addictive behavior.”

Rob Weatherholtz, associate director for TTC/Potter’s House, sees the pig roast bringing together members of every facet of the community, including business owners, church, members of the military, bikers, families, and government leaders. “Everyone is involved,” said Weatherholtz. “It is the whole kingdom working together.” He noted that the atmosphere of the pig roast reflects a certain strength. “There’s a presence at that event that is undeniably the spirit of God working,” he said.

“It’s just powerful.” Hoover agreed. “It’s an expression of God’s heart for the community to pull together,” he said. “This is our problem, so we will have to pull together to become part of the answer.” Attendance at the pig roast is by suggested donation. More information about the event may be found at www.transitiontocommunity.com/pigroastbenefit2019. Readers who have questions may call or text Weatherholtz at 610-718-6249 or Lanny Millette at 717-826-1154.

attend the gatherings. “We want to create a space where people can go and feel a sense of belonging and normalcy within the community,” explained coordinator Crystal Yunginger. “A Memory Café is an opportunity to connect with other people who may be facing the same challenges and find informal peer support.” “We will have complimentary refreshments, including coffee, hot tea and bakery items,” said Yunginger. “After that, it’s a social setting. The goal is to have those with memory impairment and their care partners converse together, share their stories and establish a community.” There will also be a resource information table set up at each meeting. “We will have a table that will include things like informational brochures (detailing) what the community has to offer support groups and adult day services,” said Yunginger. “We will have booklets on a wide range of topics, including dementia diagnoses, caregiver support and some information on general aging.” As the meetings progress, the cafés will be personalized to

meet the needs of the attendees. “As we grow and have people come back, we will tweak it and center it around what their interests are,” Yunginger stated. “We may have more reading material, or maybe they would want to paint together (and) we would provide that for them.” According to Yunginger, the ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community offers educational resources and support for those living with the effects of dementia. The organization’s steering committee consists of health professionals and representatives from local businesses, public service groups and area churches, as well as individuals personally impacted by dementia. She noted that Garden Spot Retirement Village residents serve on the committee as well. Volunteers with the group will host the Memory Cafés. They will have first aid and dementia training, but they will not be able to provide a diagnosis. Instead, they can provide understanding and resources. Yunginger, a registered nurse, said that Memory Cafés have proved successful in the United

States and internationally. “They started in the UK, and there are many throughout the United States,” she said, noting that another local Memory Café meets in Lititz. “It is something that has been studied and researched over many years, and they’ve had a lot of success.” Yunginger believes that the get-togethers will be beneficial for both those with memory issues and the caregivers. “It is a stigma-free environment because everyone is on the same page. When they go there, the caregivers do not feel like they have to justify or defend their loved ones,” she stated. “Everyone can feel at ease and stress free, and it limits isolation. It gets (people with memory issues) out of the home; it’s a safe space and they can socialize and communicate with others.” For more information about the group, readers may contact Yunginger at 717-487-6223. Information about other local groups can be found at www.memorycafedirectory.com.

Ambulance, and an ice cream truck. “Drivers let the children look inside the truck, and all the students love to honk the horns,” said Dixon, who added that the bus and the limousine usually take the older children for a ride around the block during the event, and that the ice cream truck served hand-dipped treats for students and drivers. The driver of the limousine also brought frozen treats to share. Each year, Dixon tries to add a truck that is new or different. This year, an armored truck was featured at the event. Armored truck driver Michael Ross was participating in his first Big Truck Day. “I saw other branches doing touch-the-truck event, so I thought, ‘Why not us?’” said Ross. Ross was looking forward to showing the high-security vehicle to the children. “Once we get started, I will open all the doors so they can walk through and look in.” Big Truck Day has been a tradition at Kinder-Haus for at least three decades. “It used to be in April (to coincide with) Community Helper Month,” noted Dixon. “All (during) April, I bring in members of the fire department and other professionals, and they talk to the children about their job.” Big Truck Day was moved to June several years ago so that school-age children who attend the Kinder-Haus summer program could take part. Past events included the show racing vehicle that represented a national delivery company. “It had flames on the sides,” recalled Dixon. A medical emergency helicopter has also visited on previous Big Truck Days, landing in the Kinder-Haus parking lot. Kinder-Haus is a statelicensed and Keystone Stars participating day care serving children ages 6 weeks to 12 years. The organization strives to create opportunities for students to grow spiritually, socially, mentally, and physically in a Christian atmosphere with the goal of training a child to contribute to his or her home, church, school, and community. While their parents or caregivers load clothing into the washing machine and fold items as they come out of the dryer, children who visit local laundromats now have the opportunity to spend their time there beginning a lifelong love of reading by enjoying books provided by the Laundromat Library League (LLL). The organization, founded in 2014, collects gently used books for children of all ages, from toddlers through teenagers. Volunteers then place sets of 50 to 60 books in simply decorated boxes in local laundromats with the permission of the business owners. Each book has a sticker that instructs, “Read It. Love It. Pass It On.” Since its inception, the LLL has placed more than 72,000 children’s books in close to 150 laundromats primarily in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, but also in 11 other states. To locate a participating laundromat where a library is set up, individuals may visit www. laundromatlibraryleague.org and click on “Where You Will Find Us” for an interactive map of locations. “A book icon is (available)

for each of our sites and up pops the name of the site and the address,” explained Chester County resident Arlene Rengert, LLL president and co-founder. Area laundromats where libraries are located include Parkesburg Laundry, 650 Main St., Parkesburg; Caln Laundromat, 1834 E. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; Rainbow Laundromat, 891 W. Lincoln Highway, Coatesville; Christiana Laundromat, 150 Water St., Christiana; Sundance Laundromat, 510 E. Main St., New Holland; and the Blue Spot Laundry, 2981 Lincoln Highway, Sadsburyville. “It started with the Poly Clean in West Chester. One of us knew the owner enough to ask permission (to start a library),” Rengert recalled. “ We were largely in West Chester and Kennett Square, and then gradually (the effort grew) just by word of mouth.” She noted that even more people learned about the libraries via the internet. She said that every effort is being made to open up more libraries. “When we started in 2014, we actually thought the hardest thing would be to get books. But the hardest thing is to

reach more laundromat owners,” Rengert said. Local groups are invited to conduct a book drive for LLL. There is a special need for picture books and books in Spanish and other languages. “The third-grade class at Octorara Elementary School did a book drive for us two years ago. The teacher, Tammy Anthony, found out about (the LLL) because a couple of students brought in books that had our sticker on the front. (Some of the students said) it was the only book they had at home,” said Rengert. Financial donations are also needed to ship books to laundromats in other states. Recently, LLL was granted a $500 Community Champions Grant from Constellation, an Exelon company. Additionally, the Chester County Chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) gave the LLL a donation of $800, which was raised by placing spare change in piggy banks. AAUW members

were given plain white ceramic piggy banks and decorated them as part of the effort. Rengert is pleased with how the LLL program has grown. She emphasized that books are beneficial to young learners, citing a study appearing in the April 2019 issue of Pediatrics. “Recently the American Academy of Pediatrics documented that actual books have a significantly greater developmental benefit to children in comparison to books read to them or from an electronic screen,” she stated. For more information about the LLL or to volunteer or learn how to hold a book drive, individuals should email Rengert at laundromatlibrary@gmail.com. Laundromat owners willing to offer space for a box of books should also contact Rengert. More information about the organization is also available at www.facebook.com/Laudromat LibraryLeague.

Both the ELANCO Library and ELANCO School District will be represented at the event, and Kerstetter plans to have Anchored by Grace Ministries, which involves a trailer stocked with free clothing on racks, at the event. Last year, organizers prepared more than 500 backpacks and gave away 496 at the event. This year, they plan to have 550 backpacks ready to meet the needs of area students. “We work closely with the school district so as needs arise at the beginning of the school year, they will contact us and we will help them,” Kerstetter noted. The backpacks, supplies, and services are available to ELANCO students whose families provide proof of ELANCO residency, so attendees are encouraged to bring something with an address on it, such as a current electric or phone bill. Meetinghouse To Host Bluegrass Festival

Garden from pg 1 In the summer of 2018, when Ray and his wife, Brenda, began attending the church, the idea surfaced once again. The Hursts knew pastor Dawn Ranck-Hower from the days when RanckHower was a student at Eastern Mennonite Seminary, where Brenda taught. “We got here, and we both loved gardening,” said Ray. “I told Dawn (Ranck-Hower) this plot would make a beautiful garden, and she said ‘Let’s walk (the land),’” he recalled, adding that Ranck-Hower told him there were others in the church who had a vision for a garden as well. Ray had experience in community gardening, having overseen a garden at Frazer Mennonite Church for 10 years while

Brenda served as pastor there. “We always put up our own vegetables,” he said, “but we don’t have room for a garden (where we live) in Fivepointville.” In the fall of 2018, Ray officially asked the congregation about starting a garden. Ray contacted church members Wade and Jenn Esbenshade to help prepare the land. “They have been gardeners for a long time,” explained Ray, who noted that Wade brought his tractor to the church in the fall to start creating the garden. “We put a couple loads of compost on it, and by February we put in fence posts, and we ordered the shed,” shared Ray, who added that area businesses helped by providing lumber at

cost and plants. “We have been fortunate to have the support of the community,” he noted. By spring, Ray and a number of volunteers were putting seeds and plants in the ground. “We planted the potatoes and the onions by the end of March,” said Ray. In spite of the wet weather, the group planted corn, tomatoes, peppers, two kinds of cabbage, onions, potatoes, red beets, broccoli, two kinds of lettuce, snap peas, and beans. Produce from the garden is used for student lunches at the Early Learning Center (ELC), which is a ministry of the church. Produce is also sent home with the children’s parents. Any excess is sent to the CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center to be consumed by those in need in the community. Ray noted that the garden does more than provide food.

“It creates and educational opportunity for the (ELC students),” said Ray. “On our garden team, we have staff members from ELC,” he explained. “They are doing a program with the children where they bring them out to the garden to plant and harvest, and then the parents can take some of the food home their children grew.” The garden team includes a crew of volunteers that meets monthly to weed and do other tasks. For harvesting, Ray calls on volunteers like Lois Zimmerman, who picks snap peas in the mornings to take into the ELC kitchen staff to use for lunch. On one Saturday, 10 people worked from 8 a.m. to noon to eliminate pests, weed, mulch with grass clippings from the church lawn, pick peas, put up tomato cages, and spread wood chips, among other tasks.

Ray is hoping to obtain some 300 gallon bins to collect water off the church roof to use when rain is not plentiful. He would also like to establish more connections with local growers who could donate plants, and he could use more volunteers. Individuals who wish to help may call the church at 717-354-0602 to ask to be added to the volunteer list. On June 9, the garden was dedicated. “We had folks from the borough, the community, ELC, and Ridgeview Mennonite Church,” said Ray, who added that Ridgeview pastor Audrey Kanagy designed the sign in front of the garden. “It feels like it is bigger than this congregation. It ties into the whole ‘little people’ (day care) theme and focusing on well-being and connection. It’s been wonderful,” said Ray.

The fifth annual Bluegrass Festival on the lawn of the 1871 Wenger Meetinghouse will take place on Saturday, July 13, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the restored meetinghouse. WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital has launched a sexual assault forensic nurse examiner (SAFE) program to care for and treat local victims of sexual assault. Nurse examiners on the team have undergone 54 hours of specialized training. The team is trained to conduct a medical forensic examination of victims, collecting and documenting evidence, and to serve as expert witnesses in any resulting legal proceedings. The examiners collaborate with law enforcement officials and counselors to provide coordinated care to victims. Training includes sessions with live actors who teach the examiners how to approach and treat sexual assault victims. Vanessa Smith, emergency department clinical lead and coordinator of the SAFE program at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital, noted that in addition to documenting the physical and medical effects of the assault, the team members will also help the victim to obtain counseling, emotional support, and appropriate

A Symbiotic Relationship By Ann Mead Ash

According to Kate Lowry, a member of the Junior League of Lancaster, the organization has been looking for more ways to make a positive impact on the local community. “We did a community impact assessment about five years ago,” explained Lowry. “We looked at challenges and issues, and we did an assessment of what the community needs and where the gaps are.” One result of that assessment is the Junior League of Lancaster’s Aquaponics Project. For the educational program, the group has entered into in partnership with J. E. Fritz Elementary School, The Stone Independent School, and the Lancaster Science Factory. Aquaponics utilizes an aquarium tank with

types of vegetable and herb plants suspended over the water. Fish in the aquarium produce waste, which feeds the plants growing hydroponically above. According to Nicole Keifer, the systems offer several benefits that appealed to league members. “We saw these systems, and (we) thought they were a hands-on and exciting way to get an aquaponics system into a classroom,” said Keifer, who noted that the units are compact and costeffective. “(Students) can learn about ecosystems, and they can learn about the fish life cycle and symbiotic relationships,” she noted, adding that nutrition and alternative methods of farming can also be discussed. “You can get into so many conversations and thought processes (with students) based on this one little system,” she said.

Impressed with the aquaponics systems the league had seen, league member Pam Lazos contacted Mike Simpson, director of The Stone Independent School, in the summer of 2018. Simpson was interested, and he put Lazos in contact with Darby Schock, who teaches math and science at Stone. League members worked with Fritz and the Science Factory on a similar time table. In January 2019, the aquaponics tanks arrived. At Stone, freshman and sophomore students assembled the tanks and prepared the clay media and peat plugs before adding arugula, rainbow Swiss chard, and dill. Kristen, a student at The Stone Independent School, said that the class members working on the project feed the fish, test the water, and check on the plants. Water is tested for pH range, temperature, and contamination. Schock noted that the project lends itself to a variety of lessons. “We can teach photosynthesis, the nitrogen cycle in the water, aquaculture, raising fish, (and) the environment the fish like,” he said. “There are chemistry elements to (testing the water).” At the Lancaster Science Factory, director Emily Landis noted that the tank was set up to cycle for about six weeks

before seven active fish were added. “The most important thing about setting up is establishing the right balance,” said Landis. Lazos noted that the cycling creates a colony of beneficial bacteria. “The fish waste creates ammonia that is pumped up to the top and converted into nutrients the plant can intake. Nitrites are converted to nitrate to feed the plants.” At the top, rosemary, parsley, and tiny tomato plants are growing. Landis said that the 50,000 to 60,000 yearly Science Factory visitors will have the opportunity to read signage that explains the cycle and all the chemistry behind it. “Our STEM educator, Angel Kilyan, is a chemist, so she would like to integrate the aquaponics in the ecology and chemistry programming,” said Landis. The Junior League of Lancaster is working toward putting an aquaponics tank in each Lancaster County school. Readers who would like to learn more about how the program could become part of their neighborhood school may contact the league at girlsinstem@jllancaster.org. The Junior League of Lancaster is an organization of women who promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women, and work to improve the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The group has been active in the area for nearly 100 years.

Stone Independent School students who are working with the Junior League of Lancaster’s Aquaponics Project include (from left) Philip, Sophia, Lily, and Kristen. The Junior League hopes to eventually put a similar system in each county school.

The Ephrata Concert Band will perform its season finale on Sunday, July 21, at 7:15 p.m. in the band shell at Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will take place inside the Ephrata Recreation Center, 130 S. Academy Drive. Carl Tobias, director emeritus, will conduct the band. This will be his only concert conducting the band this year, as the first five Sunday evening concerts were conducted by Martin Hinkley. The band is expected to play the following pieces: “Washington Grays” by Claudio Grafulla, the overture “Suite in E Flat for Military Band” by Holst, the trumpet trio piece “Bugler’s Holiday,” selections from “Sounds of

the Carpenters,” Greig’s “Solveig’s Song,” Goldman’s march “On the Mall,” John Philip Sousa’s march “Fairest of the Fair,” “I’m Falling in Love With Someone,” the trombone specialty “Slippery Gentlemen,” “Beer Barrel Polka” by Czech composer Jaromir Vejvoda, and John Newton’s hymn “Amazing Grace.” The concert will close with Sousa’s march “Stars and Stripes Forever.” Refreshments will be available for sale during the intermission by Carol Stark and volunteers from the 4 Our Kids charity. Last year the charity funded 48 scholarships for summer educational sessions for youths in need. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted.

The Ephrata Concert Band will perform its season finale on Sunday, July 21, at Grater Park in Ephrata. Director emeritus Carl Tobias, shown conducting the band in 2016, will conduct the finale.

LCBC Ephrata campus pastor Dan Sahd and Next Steps coordinator Dan Burge are eagerly looking forward to the day that the campus opens its doors to host the Global Leadership Summit (GLS), a simulcast of a live broadcast that originates in Chicago. This year’s event is scheduled to be held at the church, 6 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata, on Thursday, Aug. 8, and Friday, Aug. 9. “You can expect nationally known speakers in the business and nonprofit worlds,” said Burge. “The unique thing is that it is not one person talking for two days; there are multiple speakers.” Indeed, up to 14 speakers from diverse backgrounds will deliver content in both interview and lecture-style formats. Burge noted that this year’s lineup represents the nonprofit sector, the church sector, and the business world. “I think GLS does an incredible job having a diverse lineup of speakers and content,” said Burge. “What that means is that someone who wants to be challenged in the business mind will be, or if they want to be challenged in social justice, they will be. It’s a very

diverse faculty and content.” Among this year’s speakers will be adventurer and survival expert Bear Grylls, known for having been a member of the British Special Forces, climbing Mount Everest, and crossing the Arctic Ocean in an inflatable raft. Grylls is also known as a supporter of the Alpha Course and for his groundbreaking television work. Danielle Strickland, pastor, author, and justice advocate, will also speak. Strickland was a member of the Salvation Army for more than 20 years and is an ambassador for Stop the Traffik. Burge noted that author Patrick Lencioni will speak about the dynamics of teams. “He is one (speaker) that (attendees) want back every year,” noted Burge. Other speakers will include pastor Craig Groeschel; entertainment marketer Bozoma Saint John; author and leadership coach Jo Saxton; speaker and researcher Jason Dorsey; Aja Brown, mayor of the city of Compton, Calif.; fashion design founder and women’s advocate Liz Bohannon; social entrepreneur Dr. Krish Kandiah; author and leadership consultant Todd Henry; author, blogger, and entrepreneur Jia Jiang; former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss; and author and producer

Roofing

DeVon Franklin. Burge noted that joining a localized host site has networking advantages for those who attend. “In the Ephrata community, there are so many businesses and churches (attending), and there are so many people to rub shoulders with that you never thought (you might meet).” Sahd added that last year’s event drew more than 300 attendees and that this year’s registration number is quickly approaching that mark. “We really want to be a resource to leaders in our community at any level,” he noted, adding that all types of leaders can benefit from GLS, ranging from those leading in their own homes to those who lead large organizations. “For folks who don’t know they’re leaders, but are curious, this will inspire them,” he said. “We feel it is a unique way to resource the community, and we are uniquely equipped to provide this.” Sahd added that local organizations that plan to bring employees to the venue include CrossNet Ministries of New Holland and the Ephrata School District administrative team. Since many of the speakers will be conversing on their writing topics, LCBC is prepared to help attendees who want more

content than what is available on the screen. “This is just good information,” said Burge. “You receive a notebook to take tons of notes, (but) we have a bookstore where books related to the content may be purchased.” GLS at LCBC Ephrata will open at 8:30 a.m. for registration on Aug. 8. Sanctuary doors will open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 8 and 9, and speakers will begin at 9:30 a.m. Because the simulcast originates in the Central time zone, the event will run until 5:45 p.m. on Aug. 8. Organizers encourage interested individuals to register for GLS prior to the event at www.LCBCchurch.com/GLS, but day-of registration will also be available. Readers who have questions may call 717-733-0711. Pictured on front: LCBC

Ephrata campus pastor Dan Sahd (left) and Next Steps coordinator Dan Burge are hoping to fill the church sanctuary when LCBC Ephrata hosts a live broadcast of the Global Leadership Summit on Aug. 8 and 9. The summit will feature up to 14 speakers representing the worlds of business, ministry, and more.

Leaders from school districts, career and technology centers, local and regional businesses, chambers of commerce, workforce development, and municipal representatives gathered at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) on June 12. This diverse group met to collaborate on methods to connect and build career pathways to ultimately produce a workforce that is fully prepared and trained to meet the needs of the business community. A career pathway program provides students the information and experience to find and

pursue opportunities that merge with their strengths and interests. The workshop at the LCCTC convened to build the first stages of such an overall collaboration between education and business. Business and education leaders attending came away from the session having developed an initial vision of a career pathway system for Lancaster County, including next steps for organizing, planning, and action. For more information, readers may contact Jonathan Heintzman at 717-464-7050, ext. 7142, or jheintzman@lancasterctc.edu.

Cadet members of the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of Civil Air Patrol proudly displaying the model rockets that they built during the June 3 meeting at Lancaster Municipal Airport include (back, from left) cadet chief master sergeant Alec Ashcroft, cadet technical sergeant Remi Asso-Gonzalez, cadet staff sergeant Judah Acosta, cadet airman first class Seth Gerlach, cadet senior airman Daniel Freeman, cadet airman Kuria Mbatia, (front) cadet airman Colin Stritch, cadet airman Kuria Muthoni Mbatia and cadet technical sergeant Jurnee Acosta.

enemy submarines. CAP, which is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was officially established in December of 1941. Squadron 304, one of nearly 1,500 operating nationwide, is part of the 31st Wing, which is the Pennsylvania division of CAP. The 31st Wing was the second in the nation to become active. Nationally, the organization includes 58,000 senior members - those age 21 and over - and youth members - people ages 12 to 20. The weekly cadet program focuses on military leadership, character development, and physical fitness. Greg Sollenberger, who serves as aerospace education officer for the squadron, said that the participating cadets are also offered a monthly aerospace class that includes lessons ranging from rocketry to orientation flights. “Each cadet builds a rocket from a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) kit,” said Sollenberger, who discusses a range of aerospace-related topics with the cadets. CAP members may also be called upon to help locate missing aircraft and persons. The organization may be contacted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, or the Air Force Rescue Coordinator Center for disaster response. “When an aircraft goes down, it has a device that emits a radio signal,” explained Sollenberger, who added that getting a ground team together to trace the signal is one of the responsibilities of squadron members. Broad excitedly shared that a new drone program is about to change the way those searches are handled. Broad’s latest job at the Wing level is to start a drone search program. “We will be looking at aircraft that have crashed as observers, and we will be doing lost persons evaluations,” explained Broad, who held the first training session for 24 volunteers at Hawk Mountain the first weekend in May. Cadets who are 16 years or older may be trained and certified to use the drones as technicians or observers. “(The) drones will be used for emergency services, and they don’t go beyond our visual line of sight,” explained Broad. Broad said that the squadron is always in need of more adult volunteers. Volunteers must pass an extensive background check. “You can come in here with nothing but a desire to help cadets,” said Sollenberger, who added that training will be provided. CAP has the largest fleet of single-engine Cessnas in the world, boasting more than 550 aircraft. Squadron 304 does not yet own a plane, but members are hoping to procure one in the near future. The organization currently raises funds by parking cars at a number of local events, including the Lititz Craft Show, Community Days held at the airport in August, and at the Rough and Tumble Museum and Hospice auction. Recreational Programs Set pants will receive a tic-tac-toe card with geocaches to locate. Naturalist Mary Ann Schlegel will provide instruction on the use of handheld GPS units prior to searching for geocaches. Attendees are asked to dress for outdoor activity and wear shoes appropriate for covering 1 to 2 miles on varied terrain. Registrants are asked to indicate the number of GPS units required, and they should plan to leave their keys or driver’s license if borrowing a unit. Adults must

accompany children. Junior Girl Scout Animal Habitats for girls age 8 and up will take place on Saturday, July 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. Naturalist Ann Strauss will lead Junior Girl Scouts through the requirements for the Animal Habitats Badge. Together they will take a hike and make observations along the way, noting signs of resident wildlife, building nests as habitat, and more. Attendees should be prepared to be outside for

most of the program. Muddy Mess, for people age 4 and up, will take place on Saturday, July 27, from noon to 1 p.m. at Campsite 5, 19 Nature’s Way, Lancaster.
