According to Kerstetter, there is a special need for backpacks and supplies for older elementary, middle, and high school students. “We (receive) a lot of crayons, but we need items for high school students too, noted Kerstetter, who mentioned that highlighters and spiral-bound tablets are among the

Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West never wants to see a girl miss out on taking part in the program because of a lack of funds. “The worst thing we can hear is that a girl didn’t participate because it costs too much money, said West. “We want to make the program accessible to every girl regardless of financial limitations. The GOTR endowment, created in honor of Ellen McCabe, West’s stepmother, and administered by the Lancaster Community Foundation, will work to make sure that never happens. “The money GOTR will (receive) from the endowment will go directly to See GOTR Endowment pg 3

gives exposure to singing, playing, and moving - all things kids love to do naturally - in tandem with developmentally appropriate German language learning interspersed with experiences that stem from German cultural traditions.” Bullington shared one parent’s perspective, quoting the individual as saying, “I love that German language, music, and culture is experienced rather than taught. For instance, rather than just telling the kids the word for ‘apple strudel’’ and that it is a popular German dish and maybe giving them a taste of strudel, they involve the children in making strudel.” The Lancaster Liederkranz, 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim, was founded in 1880 as a singing society by German immigrants in Lancaster city. It continues today as a dynamic family organization dedicated to perpetuating and amplifying the founders’ original purpose through song, dance, language, art, education, and international cultural exchange. The Sommer Singspiel camp will be held at the Liederkranz. There is a cost per student to attend, with discounts for Liederkranz members and for multiple family members. Registrations may be submitted at https://llksingspiel.wordpress.com. For more information about the camp, readers may contact Bullington at drue.bullington@ gmail.com or 717-940-9927.

Johnson lauded the Wests for their forward thinking. “Endowments create an important opportunity to keep money working positively in our community over time, she said, noting that while many people make gifts to causes, only a small percentage leave funds to an organization. “When people are gone, their gifts are gone, said Johnson. West said that she hopes area residents will consider the endowment in their planned giving. “We invite and encourage the community to give toward the endowment fund, West said. Johnson. “That can’t happen unless we have big-picture thinkers who value today and tomorrow equally. Our children are our future, and that is where hope lives. According to Johnson, creating the endowment is an investment in the future. “(The endowment embodies) the intention to continue supporting girls for generations, she said. West noted that the funds will support Lancaster-area young people in years to come. “Sustainability is key. Our thought process was that if you invest, you want to make sure the money will be used correctly, she said. “Should GOTR ever cease to exist, the endowment will be used for another organization that supports youths in Lancaster.

with West and Johnson. “She was very much a cheerleader and encourager who got us really excited and helped us to stay focused throughout the entire process, said West. “The entire way, (McCabe) was there giving us ideas and supporting us in any way we needed. When McCabe passed away in the fall of 2016, West’s husband, Peter, made a suggestion. “My husband said, ‘Ellen loved GOTR, and she would do anything for it,’ shared West, adding, “She saw how it was changing these girls. Peter suggested the family start an endowment fund in McCabe’s memory for GOTR. “Ellen felt no matter how much money you have, you should give a percentage away, said West. Seeing the work of GOTR continue is important to both West and Johnson. “ We want the same values to continue (into the future) for girls in the community and the thousands of girls we reach every year, explained

financial assistance for girls in need, explained West. GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson elaborated, “We will receive a percentage each year based on how much is in (the fund), she said, adding that about half the girls who take part in the program receive scholarship funds. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. According to West, McCabe was an integral part of GOTR Lancaster from its inception in March 2009. “She talked to us about fundraising and helped us find donors, said West, who noted that McCabe willingly shared her knowledge of how to run a nonprofit organization

Participants in Trinity Lutheran Church of New Holland’s vacation Bible school (VBS), “Shine Jesus Shine,” helped with two service projects. The students painted Little Libraries (top photo) that were made by Brian Meinart. The libraries will be placed in the youth center and food pantry in Terre Hill, and ELANCO Library librarian Heather Smith will keep the libraries stocked. Additionally, students conducted a project (bottom photo) to support Caitlin’s Smiles, an organization that distributes activity bags to children who require long-term hospitalization. The Quilters of Trinity made 60 bags, and the children made activity kits that were placed in the bags, including activity books, markers, and crayons.
National Korean War Veterans Day will take place on Friday, July 27. The event will take place on the anniversary of the July 27, 1953, armistice signed by North Korea, China, the United States and the United Nations, suspending all hostilities. In honor of the Americans who served during that time, and especially those who died, the President has proclaimed July 27 as National Korean War Veterans Day. He encouraged Americans to observe the day with ceremonies and activities honoring all Korean War veterans.

antique tractors, miscellaneous vintage farm implements and antique cars. The day ended with a tractor procession. The day also served as the season’s final day of Fairmount’s annual silent auction that started in midOctober and ran until Heritage Day. Activities included a petting zoo, quilting, and tours of the adjacent Muddy Creek Farm Library and Home Messenger Library. Local storytellers Henry Benner and Ken Sensenig and historian Lloyd Weiler recounted stories from yesteryear. Artisans and crafts people demonstrated crafts such as chair caning, spinning, weaving, stone masonry and pottery making. Displays featured arrowheads and other Native American artifacts, old bottles, carriages and antique cars. Food offerings included breakfast foods, pork barbecue, soft pretzels, homemade ice cream and strawberry pie. Proceeds will go to Fairmount’s Sharing Fund. PENNYSAVER - Garden Spot Edition - July 25, 2018 - 17
Charity Ride Makes Local Stops The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America raised $1.3 million during its recent 24th Anniversary Ride. Funds raised directly benefit Victory Junction, a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The ride’s donation will support maintenance programs, building projects and camperships. For the first time since 2011, former NASCAR driver and TV racing analyst Kyle Petty brought his annual motorcycle ride back to the East Coast. On May 5, Petty embarked
on 1,200-mile route, leading 225 participants from Portland, Maine, to Greensboro, N.C. Traveling through nine states in seven days, the ride included various stops and sights on its themed “Americana Tour.” Local stops included the Eden Resort in Lancaster and Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. The ride finished with a finale celebration at Victory Junction in North Carolina. Victory Junction has served as the ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor
of his late son, Adam. Since 1995, more than 8,400 riders have logged more than 12 million cumulative motorcycle miles and raised $19.3 million for Victory Junction and other children’s charities. Funds were gathered from fans along the route as part of the ride’s “Small Change. Big Impact.” program, as well as donations made by sponsors, organizations, and the riders themselves. Team members in Manheim raised $84,437 for the ride. This year’s ride also featured several celebrity riders, including NASCAR Hall of Famer
Richard Petty; NASCAR legends Harry Gant, Hershel McGriff, and Donnie Allison; current NASCAR driver David Ragan; former NASCAR driver and TV racing analyst Ricky Craven; former NFL players Herschel Walker and George Rogers; and NASCAR personalities Krista Voda, Rutledge Wood, and Rick Allen. For more information or to donate, readers may visit www.kylepettycharityride.com. Marian priest Father Donald Calloway, MIC, will deliver the keynote presentation, “The Power of a Book.” Presenters will include Celeste Behe, Regina Doman, Gary Zimak, Lisa Mladninich, and others. Attendees are invited to mingle with old and new friends at a game night and social on Tuesday evening. Separate critique sessions will be offered for poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Pitch sessions are planned with publishers Ave Maria Press, Ignatius Press, Marian Press, and Our Sunday Visitor. Also new this year, Meals With Mentors will offer a chance to share food and discuss a topic of mutual interest with a small group. Information about registration, accommodations, and the conference schedule are available at www.catholicwritersguild.org/liveconference. The event welcomes CWG members and nonmembers alike. Clergy may attend for free.
