International Outreach BY ANN MEAD ASH

arrel Weaver grew up in the New Holland area and made his way to Halle in what was East Germany to start a ministry more than two decades ago. In Halle, Darrel met his wife, Miriam, and they now have two daughters. Each summer, the family returns to the ELANCO area to share an update with family, friends, and supporters. This year, the Weavers will hold a pork barbecue and meet-and-greet on Friday, Aug. 5, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Road, East Earl. The food, which will be available by suggested donation, will include a la carte pulled pork on a kaiser roll and a meal option. Both takeout and sit-down meals will be available. Much of the Weavers’ mission in Halle has involved refugees, and Darrel now pastors an international church. “I have officiated at many international weddings,” said

Barbecue Will Support Weaver Family Ministry Darrel. “I just did a Persian wedding where the cake is up at the altar during the wedding … and cutting the cake is part of the ceremony, and there is dancing and music.” Darrel said that he often oversees Christian wedding services with cultural elements from the betrothed couple’s homeland. At the barbecue, Darrel plans to talk about the persecuted church around the world. “Our ministry is to people who are from persecuted areas,” said Darrel, who noted that recently refugees have been coming from Africa. “Many are finding they are able to be baptized and have a Bible (once they are in Germany),” Darrel explained. He spoke about a new congregant who delivered illegal Bibles on his motorcycle in his home country until it was too dangerous. The man fled to Germany and found fellowship in the men’s group associated with Darrel’s church. In addition to Sunday services, the church offers small home groups in Persian, German, and English. “I have a passion to help people find freedom (from addiction),” said Rob Weatherholtz, director of discipleship for The Potter’s House. “I want to see healed relationships and marriages. We don’t just do recovery; we want to inspire the next generation of game changers in society.” Rob gives presentations about the mission of The Potter’s House, a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and

In the early days of Aaron’s Acres, an organization that provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21, the summer camp program served 25 or fewer campers. When Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, wanted parents to see pictures of what the children did at camp, she simply asked the nurse to take photos. Staff and campers worked together to create a memory book for each child to take home.

A tradition that began 38 years ago on the first Saturday in August will continue as the Caernarvon Historical Society presents Churchtown Day on Saturday, Aug. 6. The event will feature community yard sales along with breakfast and lunch items prepared at the Caernarvon Fire Company. People will be invited to shop for bargains at yard sales that will begin at 7 a.m. on Route 23 in Churchtown, as well as in neighboring communities. “It’s amazing what you find,” said Yvonne Styer, historical society president and historian. Caernarvon Historical Society will also host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at the property next door, at Caernarvon Township Park, which is where the Caernarvon Elementary School once stood. Sales will be held both inside and outside the historical society building. Bottled water will also be offered for sale. “Items are donated by members of our society,” said Styer, noting that she and other members put items aside throughout the year in preparation for Churchtown Day. “We accumulate a lot of stuff. Rob Weatherholtz, director of discipleship with The Potter’s House, holds a copy of his book, “A Raptured Heart,” which was released in March.

In 2016, when his father died and Rob inherited the property in Brownstown, Rob realized the vision he had while in prison could be accomplished. “All the pieces of the puzzle came together,” said Rob. He partnered with The Potter’s House to build Still Waters Recovery Center on the site. Land was broken in 2018, and the center opened in 2020. Rob is now a volunteer chaplain in Lancaster County Prison. “I have a passion for healing and deliverance … for transformational ministry,” said Rob, who is now a licensed pastor. Rob spent eight hours each Saturday for a year writing “A Raptured Heart.” (It’s about) all I went through and what God did,” said Rob. “God turns our tests into testimony and our mess into a message.” Rob will speak at Village Chapel Mennonite Church, 335 Wissler Road, New Holland, at the 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday, July 31. He also partners with Breakout Ministries, 2400 Anita Court, Leola, for Jesus Advantage, held on Saturdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Readers who want to know more about “A Raptured Heart” may visit www.arapturedheart.com. Those who wish to speak to Rob may contact him at rob@arapturedheart.com.

spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions, and about his own journey, which he has chronicled in his book, “A Raptured Heart,” which was released in March. “It’s a long, long story,” said Rob, playfully slapping the book where it lay on the counter in his home at Still Waters Recovery Center, a campus that also includes a group home for Potter’s House students. Land for a second group home was recently broken at the site. Rob’s story begins in Elizabethtown, where he was the youngest in a family of seven. He describes his childhood as “tumultuous,” noting that his father, Robert Weatherholtz Sr., was in and out of his life. After graduating from Elizabethtown Area High School in 1978, Rob worked in construction, learning the roofing trade. He opened his own roofing business, but financial issues with clients eventually caused the business to close. Rob began doing work on modular homes, traveling from Connecticut to South Carolina and only spending a short time each weekend with his wife and three sons. By 2004, he was abusing alcohol and found himself in Lancaster County Prison after being arrested for driving under the influence. It was in the prison that he had an encounter with the Lord and a vision of a healing center for those who had encountered brokenness in their families and addiction. The center would be located on his father’s property along the Conestoga River in Brownstown. In 2005, Rob became a student of The Potter’s House in Leola. He restarted his roofing business, hiring Potter’s House students to work for him. In 2013, Lloyd Hoover, executive director of The Potter’s House, asked him to join the board. Rob eventually became full time on The Potter’s House staff, and he sold his roofing business to the organization.

“Once we got big (serving more than 200 campers), the nurse didn’t have the time (to take photos),” recalled Paskoff. Instead, Paskoff turned to community members and asked them to help. “We want the community to see our kids,” said Paskoff. “A lot of people think kids with disabilities are really limited, so we bring them here so they can see (our campers), and it changes their perspective. They say, ‘I didn’t expect (campers) to get in the water

or on the horses.’” In the summer of 2019, more than 100 community volunteers visited during the six weeks of camp to take photos. On June 21, three Fulton Bank employees joined Paskoff and more than 90 campers at Aaron’s Acres’ location at the New Holland Community Memorial Park. Jess Marzella, who works with the Small Business Administration in Pottstown, and Trish Mountain and Melissa Schaeffer, who work at the Penn Square Fulton location in Lancaster, all donated their time to take photos of the campers. The three women had responded to an email from Fulton coordinator Karen Landis. Marzella has a daughter with special needs, and she has been volun-

teering with the Best Buddies program at her daughter’s school for several years. Her sensitivity in this area led her to volunteer. Mountain, who lives in Mountville, said that she has volunteered with Aaron’s Acres for three years and with the Special Olympics for several years. She noted that her career is in banking, but she has a degree in therapeutic recreation and she enjoys helping out. Schaeffer, of Washington Boro, had volunteered with Aaron’s Acres when the camp was in Manheim. She said that she had a niece with special needs who has passed away. “She was a delight in our lives,” she recalled, adding, “It’s amazing to watch these kids have such a great time with this

experience.” Two days into camp at a new location in New Holland, Paskoff was pleased with the results of moving the sixweek summer program. “Yesterday did not feel like the first day,” she said. “We are in our new location. Not one kid had a problem with the transition.” Paskoff noted that the recognizable yellow T-shirts of all camp staff members, the daily schedule, and the intentional routine of the camp days have helped to make the change to a new place easier. Paskoff noted the organization is looking for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs. More information about Aaron’s Acres may be found at www.aaronsacres.org.

ket will benefit the society and the upkeep of its building, which includes a local history museum with displays of local artifacts. “The building is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment,” noted Styer. “We have a library of history books and research books and obituaries … and an archives room,” she said, noting that museum displays are changed several times a year. Currently on display are paintings of one-room schools by Morgantown artist Jere Brady. Local Author Describes His “Different Life” “If you want me to be unhappy, pity me,” said author Dave Eby of Ephrata, when describing his visual impairment to members of Senior Connections, a group that meets monthly at Conestoga Mennonite Church. “Pity is a bad thing because pity means (you) are sorry for me. I would say empathy is a much better thing. With empathy comes understanding and compassion.” Eby, who is legally blind, is the author of “A Different Life,” his memoir, which describes all that he was able to accomplish despite his visual challenges. These achievements include working on the family farm, playing football in high school and wresting in college. Most recently, Eby taught English to college students in China from 2008 to 2020. He began his remarks by addressing the most common question that people ask him, which is about how well he can see. “I can see the people in the room, but for the people in the back, I can’t see your faces very well,” he said. “I could not describe you, but I know you are there.” “I am legally blind, which is good, because I would not want to do it illegally,” he added with a smile. He said that not having the best vision led him to discover coping skills, such as becoming a better listener. “God did not give me good eyesight, but He gives us other things,” said Eby. “We need to celebrate Jesus because no matter the situation we are in with Him, He can take us through it and lead us into a life that goes far beyond our expectations.”

Eby said that he wanted study English in college with the goal of becoming a teacher, but he decided to study business instead. “(I believed) my eyesight would keep me from being a teacher. How can I manage a classroom if I can’t see the students?” he said. He graduated from college in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After he worked in construction at CM Weaver and then at a transportation company, a cousin suggested that he get involved with Youth Evangelism Service (YES), a program sponsored by Eastern Mennonite Missions. His first assignment with YES was in Mexico. “Suddenly, I was the same as everybody else because I could travel and go places by myself,” Eby noted. “In Ephrata, I always needed to arrange a ride.” After YES, he worked at Paul B. Zimmerman for 13 years. As a member of Indiantown Mennonite Church in Ephrata, which he still attends, he got involved with the youth group and was the church’s first youth pastor. In 2006, he was asked by the church deacon to accompany him to China and was eventually invited to return to become a teacher of English. “God knew the plan He had for me,” Eby said. “In His greatness, He knew my business training would benefit me as a teacher.” Eby concluded his talk by reading passages from Scripture and taking part in a question-and-answer session. To learn more about the book and for purchase information, visit www.a differentlife.signedon.net or www.facebook.com/David EbyADifferentLife.

week on the trips. When Dorothy went to high school, in the building that is now the Leola Elementary School on School Drive, from her home on Snake Hill Road, she did not walk uphill both ways; instead, she took the trolley, which she calls the “street car,” back and forth. As a teenager, Dick did not wait to turn 16 to purchase his first car. He bought a 1929 Model A Ford at the age of 15 for $20 with money he earned working at the American Golf Course, located along Route 23 in New Holland. The mini golf course used sand rather than carpet on the holes, and teenagers were employed to use trowels to smooth it out between golfers. “I was paid $1.25 a night,” recalled Dick. After more than 75 years together, the couple continues to be devoted to each other. Dorothy has been diagnosed with macular degeneration, but she called Dick “my rock,” saying, “He does everything for me.”

embroidered and plain silk that Dorothy’s brother-in-law brought back from his service in Japan. Dick recalled that the Ladies Aid Society of the church furnished the reception meal. After returning to Lancaster, Dick worked for the airline industry for 14 years before switching to Miller Chemical, where he was employed for nearly 30 years, retiring on Feb. 1, 1991. Dorothy worked for two years for the Leola Post Office, switching to the New Holland facility in 1968 and retiring in 1986. She was the only woman at the New Holland branch, and she noted that all the men she worked with were gentlemen. Over the years, Dick and Dorothy enjoyed dancing. “We love to dance,” said Dorothy, who shared that the couple’s favorites included ballroom, country line, and square dancing. For nearly 30 years, they traveled to Florida during the winter months, indulging their love of dancing several nights a

worked at RCA and wrote him lots of letters. In July of 1946, after Dick had returned from the service, the pair became engaged and construction on their house began on a piece of Spence property along Musser School Road in Leola. It was at that same home, a house that has been remodeled and expanded over the years, that the couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary with family and friends on June 29. Now in their 90s, Dick and Dorothy are proud of their three children - Rick Ruoss, Jim Ruoss, and Kathy Martin - and their 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Seated comfortably on the deck of the home they have shared for so long, the pair enjoyed reminiscing about their lives together. Dick’s recall of details is nothing short of amazing, and Dorothy remembers specifics about their wedding, such as the dress she wore. The dress was made by Dick’s mother, Lillian, of

PA Medi Offers Medicare Reviews Lancaster County Office of Aging operates a program called PA Medi, formerly APPRISE. There are 52 PA Medi offices all over Pennsylvania. This group assists older adults with Medicare and health insurance questions all year round. Each fall, volunteer counselors from PA Medi will meet individually with beneficiaries who already have Medicare to review their Medicare plans. Some insurance companies make policy changes in fall and/or increase their yearly cost, making it worthwhile to review Medicare plans whether the plan stays the same or not. During open enrollment, individuals can switch Advantage Plans and those who have original Medicare can switch their Part D prescription plan at this time. Changes made would be effective Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023. Appointments are done confidentially and in an unbiased manner. The service is free of charge, and appointments take about one hour per person. PA Medi will accept calls in September to set up appointments. Twenty sites will be available all over Lancaster County. When calling, individuals can ask for a location close to their home. Appointments will also be available at Lancaster County Office of Aging, 150 N. Queen St., Suite 415, Lancaster. To set up a Medicare review with PA Medi counselors, call 717-299-7979 in September to make an appointment.

Women’s Club Plans Luncheon Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will hold its “Heroes Among Us” luncheon on Wednesday, Aug. 3, at noon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. LCSWMA Imposes Penalty To Help Enforce Tarp Policy The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) requires that all commercial and residential customers transporting waste to any of its facilities use a tarp to secure open loads. LCSWMA will now charge a monetary penalty for those who do not follow this protocol, and second offenders will be turned away. LCSWMA officials noted that according to Pennsylvania’s state and federal requirements, it is the law to tarp loads. The relevant Pennsylvania law states, “Loads must be covered with a securely fastened water-resistant cover that eliminates potential for littering and other nuisances.” Tarping is also part of the Lancaster County Municipal Waste Management Plan. Facility operators and owners such as LCSWMA are responsible for knowing and complying with all relevant laws, regulations, authorizations and permits to help avoid the environmental impacts and public health, safety and welfare issues associated with the transportation of solid waste. When transporting any waste, objects or materials in an open trailer or vehicle, drivers should tie large objects directly to the vehicle or trailer, never overload the vehicle, check for possibilities of shifting and securely place a water-resistant tarp over the entire open load.
