SHINE brings lasagna to locals
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Afewyears ago, Crystal Smeltzer and Brian French, Lighthouse Vocational Services’ (LVS) senior management, were brainstorming ideas to get LVS participants out into the community in a way that would give back to local residents. LVS is located at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, and the organization provides vocational services for individuals with disabilities.
“They were thinking, ‘Everybody loves to eat, and Lancaster County is famous for food,’” said Michelle Coblentz, donor relations advocate with LVS. The co-workers hit on the idea of making and delivering lasagna to area residents who were struggling in some way. The effort came to be known as SHINE, which Coblentz said stands for “Sharing Hope In Neighborly Encounters.”
Until June 2023, two meals were being delivered each Wednesday, but as of June, two meals go out on Tuesdays as well. Each meal consists of a tray of lasagna to feed up
to 20, along with a freshly made salad for each person at the home where the meal is being delivered.
“Meals go to people who are needing encouragement - maybe going through some kind of rough patch … whether it’s an illness, hospitalization, death of a spouse, or (they) just don’t have a lot of food,” explained Coblentz.
Denise Johnston, community participation services coordinator with LVS, explained that three participants and an LVS coach work out of two area churches that have partnered with the organization, switching back and forth between using the Trinity Lutheran Church kitchen and the kitchen at Bethany Grace Christian Fellowship. “The same group that purchases the groceries goes to the church and prepares the meal, and then they deliver the meal,” she stated.
At first, word of mouth was the best way to find meal recipients, but as the program has grown, Johnston requested names from sites where LVS participants volunteer in the community. More

Three decades of ASSETS
BY ANN MEAD ASH
“Historically, we’ve done a lot of work in Lancaster city,” said Kevin Nofziger, business development officer with ASSETS. “But more of our clients are coming from all over the county.”
On Tuesday, Sept. 12, ASSETS will celebrate 30 years serving Lancaster with an event at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, called ASSETS at 30, may be purchased at https://assets-at-30.eventbrite.com.
ASSETS was started by the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) in an effort to
create stateside opportunities for entrepreneurs. “We are a CDFI (community development financial institution),” said Nofziger, who noted the organization plans to expand beyond Lancaster County. ASSETS can offer loans from $1,000 to $50,000. Three main lending products are available: a small business loan of up to $10,000; an impact loan of up to $30,000; and a special Reimagining Our Community loan of up to $10,000 for one year at 1%, accompanied by a 30% matching grant.
Loans are only the beginning of what ASSETS offers. Entrepreneurial training programs and boot camps, which run from six to 10

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is always active, always evolving, always moving forward.
A national initiative designed to support the development of girls in the third through eighth grades with physical activities like running, GOTR has a mission that is seasonal in nature. On the heels of a successful spring campaign, the Lancaster chapter of GOTR is currently gearing up for its 10-week fall season, which will get underway on Monday, Sept. 11.
In addition, Girls on the Run recently assigned new positions and responsibilities to employees Jennifer West and Kylie Homan.
“While Girls on the Run has two seasons, it is a year-round effort to ensure the success of each season,” said West, GOTR’s new executive director. “As a staff, it’s our responsibility to set up our coaches for success. Then it all starts again. We’re always thinking of how we can engage the community more. We know how important it is for girls to have a safe place to land.”
Registration for GOTR’s fall campaign will run from Thursday, Aug. 10, through Friday, Sept. 15. The season will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 19, with GOTR’s inclusive and celebratory 5K run at Millersville University.
“My job is to ensure our program is up and running so we can serve as many girls in the county as possible,” said Homan, GOTR’s new program director. “It’s about establishing our coaches so they can facilitate the program. Running is a component of our program, not a requirement. In each of the
lessons, there are physical activity or games. We are encouraging girls to keep moving, based on the ability they bring each day.”
GOTR officials hope to make their program available through every school district in Lancaster County, an initiative that will depend upon the availability of volunteer coaches. There is a cost associated with the program, and financial aid is available.
In the spring, GOTR involved 900 Lancaster County girls, thanks in part to the time and effort committed by 380 volunteer coaches.
“Because they’re all volunteer coaches, it’s almost like starting fresh each season,” said West. “We rely on coaches coming back to coach the girls. We’re looking for positive role models to show kindness and compassion to the girls.”
“We are really focusing on reaching out to the community for coaches of all shapes, sizes and ethnicity,” added West. “It’s really important for the girls to look into the coaches and see themselves. There aren’t really restrictions on who can be a coach, except that you must be in at least the ninth grade.”
West, who co-founded the Lancaster-Lebanon chapter of Girls on the Run in 2009, replaced Katie Sandoe as the program’s executive director. This past spring, GOTR served its 20,000th participant.
“We knew Lancaster County was going to be so accepting of the program,” said West. “Girls on the Run is about conflict resolution, making good choices, being a good friend. Lancaster is the perfect spot for Girls on the Run, but we do rely on the community’s support.”

president and historian, noting that the Churchtown Day tradition began in 1984. “The only time we did not have it was in 2020 because of the (pandemic).”
Caernarvon Historical Society will also host a flea market at its property, 2148 Main St., Narvon, and at the property next door, at Caernarvon Township Park. “We use the property where the (Caernarvon Elementary) school was and in front of our building,” said Styer, noting that sales will be held both inside and outside the historical society building. “We will have books and all kinds of kitchen items - anything and everything.”
Those interested in renting a yard sale space in the park are asked to call Styer at 717-4455040 or stop by the historical society any Wednesday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Vendors will get a 12-foot-wide space, and they must bring their own tables. Vendors are responsible for cleaning up any debris and items they do not sell. The historical society reserves the right to refuse yard sale vendors that are not offering family-friendly items for sale.
In addition, the Caernarvon Fire Company will offer a pancake breakfast from 6 to 10 a.m. The menu will include pancakes, sausage, fresh fruit, orange juice and coffee. There will be separate prices for adults and children ages 4 to 10. Pulled pork will also be sold by the quart for takeout only.
“They did not have a pancake breakfast for the past few years; it is returning this year,” Styer noted. “It was takeout before because of (the pandemic). This
year, you can come in and eat, and it’s all you can eat.”
The fire company is located at 2145 Main St., Narvon. For more information, search for “Caernarvon Fire Company” on Facebook.
Proceeds from the flea market will benefit the society and the upkeep of its building, which includes a local history museum with displays of local artifacts. The building is open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. The building houses a library of history books and research books, obituaries and an archives room. Museum displays are changed several times a year. Currently on display are paintings by Morgantown artist Jere Brady.
The Caernarvon Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to preserving the history of Caernarvon Township. The society was first established in 1975 and is located in the former Caernarvon Presbyterian Church. In addition to Churchtown Day in August, the society hosts a Memorial Day celebration and hosts history programs with local guest speakers. One is planned for the fall.
More information about the historical society can be found by searching for “Caernarvon Historical Society” on Facebook.

Awards presented to Scout leaders
The Susquehanna District, a part of the Boy Scouts of America’s Pennsylvania Dutch Council, held its annual awards dinner on June 14 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Willow Street. The annual dinner recognizes leaders who have exemplified the Scouting ideals and program in their Scout units or leadership within the district.
The District Award of Merit is the top volunteer award the district can present. Chet Bowen from Troop 84 and Fred Frey from Troop 146 received this award at the dinner.
Bowen was the committee chair for Pack 93 for six years and has been an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 84 for five years and a member of
Crew 162 for two years. He is also a unit commissioner. He is currently the Pennsylvania Dutch Council spring sales chair and the district committee membership chair. Bowen has been involved with Scouting almost his entire life, and he has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, is a Vigil member in the Order of the Arrow, and received the James E. West award.
Frey is an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 146, the committee chair of Pack 146 and an assistant roundtable commissioner for the district, a role in which he is instru-
mental in creating recruitment materials and incentives. He also serves on staff for the College of Commissioner Science and often volunteers for district events like the Klondike Derby. Frey has earned the bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the College of Commissioners Science, Arrowhead Honor as a commissioner, and Scouter’s Key, and he is an Ordeal member of the Order of the Arrow.
Other volunteer leaders were presented with awards. Spark Plug Awards went to Corey Wilson, Troop 76; Andrea Dougherty, Pack 82; Mary Kay Vasold, Troop 82; Melissa Kelshaw, Pack 37; and Jim Rayfield, Troop 48.
Leader of the Year awards were also presented. The winners were Joseph Way, Troop 349 Boys for Scouts BSA; Tyffany Valotta, Pack 148, for Cub Scouts; Julie Pedrick, Pack and Troop 82, Scouter of the Year; and Marion Glasby, unit commissioner, Commissioner of the Year.
Unit Leader Award of Merit winners included Timothy Schmitt, Troop 349 Boys; Matthew Vazquez, Pack 37; and Daniel Dennis, Pack 82; and Kenneth Neumann, Troop 393. The Scouters Training Award went to Kenneth Neumann of Troop 393, and the William D Boyce New Unit Awards were presented to Kandis Sharp, Troop 76 Girls; Diana Urbine, Troop 76 Girls; Howard Urbine, Troop 76 Girls; and Donald Wilson, Troop 76 Girls.

recently flyers with a QR code for comments have been delivered with the meal. The flyers ask meal recipients to suggest others who might enjoy being treated to lasagna.
The organization is now working with The Factory Ministries in Paradise to provide meals to some clients, as well as looking to bring meals to people in retirement communities
who could benefit from the interaction. Teams have also delivered meals to Revelations of Freedom Ministries in Blue Ball and to the Good Samaritan homeless shelter in Ephrata from December of 2022 through March. “We tried a couple other recipes, not just lasagna (for the homeless shelter),” noted Johnston.
Johnston estimated that more than 200 lasagna meals have been delivered
by SHINE since the program began. She pointed out that the LVS participants benefit from the opportunity to serve. “The participants make a connection,” she said. “They get so excited knowing they are blessing someone else, so when they get to see the person they made the lasagna for and visit with them it’s really rewarding.”

Clay Twp.; Ephrata S.D. This working farm is in Ag. Preserve and the Clean-Green program so taxes are only approx. $8,000.
AUCTIONEER NOTE: Truly a rare opportunity to buy one of the last original large working farms in the area. Approx. 95-acres are tillable. Fields are basically level but the rich limestone top-soil drains very well and grows tremendous crops. Provides diverse income for financial stability. Our understanding is the farm could be split in two parcels because it is over 100-acres. Ask your Attorney to see if this would work for you if wanted/needed. This farm needs nothing and is capable to start paying for itself the first day you own it.

Farm Life
frompg 11
World War II began, she had mastered cooking on the wood stove so well that we were taking baked goods to the market each Saturday, along with dressed chickens.
In the late 1930s, most of the surrounding farms did not have electricity. My father, a licensed electrician, was contracted with Pennsylvania Gov. Gifford Pinchot’s electrification program to begin to remedy this. Pinchot’s administration had set up a work program that employed out-ofwork young men for three month stints to do muchneeded public services. This program was so successful that President Franklin D. Roosevelt took notice and worked with Pinchot to frame a new program on the same lines, first in New York, then nationally. Thus was formed the Works Progress Administration (WPA). My father had worked with the Pinchot Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) program in Chester County, planting trees in the Malvern area. The CCC eventually became a national program also.
During World War II, from 1941 to 1945, a blackout was imposed every night, and wardens were appointed to check around the neighborhood for those who did not comply with the order. There was a real fear of German bombing such as England was having every night. My father was a warden, doing random drives about the countryside looking for those who used flashlights or lanterns to go to the outhouse or barn. Even cigarettes were considered potential target material.
Our house, with its sixover-six two-century-old windows, was soon outfitted with tar paper “shades” that could be turned up during the day and dropped at night. Then, heavy curtains were drawn across the whole window well for total darkness. The daily sun made the tar paper emit a very distinctive odor, which even in 2023, I can still remember.
Regrettably, when the peace treaty was finally signed, my father sold the farm, and we moved back to suburban Philadelphia.
