Neighbors Replace Veteran’s Flag By Ann Mead Ash

Frank Monteforte, a World War II veteran who lives on Martin Street in East Earl, received a new flagpole from his neighbors after the pole in his yard was destroyed by an ice storm.

On July 11, a detail representing the United Veterans Council of New Holland dedicated the flagpole at Frank Monteforte’s home in East Earl to Monteforte in memory of his brother John, who was killed while serving in Germany during World War II.

ELANCO First 10 is an initiative to connect families and schools in the ELANCO School District during a

child’s first 10 years. “(ELANCO First 10) began informally as the early childhood collaboration meeting, said Rachel Weaver, family development specialist with Community Action See ELANCO First 10 pg 9

Stakeholders in the ELANCO First 10 initiative who are holding virtual meetings include representatives of the ELANCO School District, the ELANCO Area Library, Parents as Teachers, Community Action Partnership, CrossNet, the New Holland Early Learning Center, and the community. The program is working to give area students the best possible educational start during their first 10 years of life.

“Every veteran should have a flag, said Sarah Bednar, who lives on Martin Street in East Earl. W hen Sarah’s neighbor Frank Monteforte’s flagpole gave way in an ice storm in November 2019, his daughter, Felicia, who lives next door to Sarah, dragged the pole into his garage. She told Sarah what had happened, and Sarah quickly went into action. Sarah contacted her uncle in Virginia, retired Sgt. Maj. Richard Smith, about getting a new flagpole. Richard said he would have a new flag and pole sent to her. Sarah’s husband, Dave, and his father, Paul, installed the pole by early July. Next, Sarah turned to American Legion Post 662 in New Holland for help with a dedication of the pole. See Veteran’s Flag pg 3

50 Years Of Plenty And Gratitude Shady Maple Celebrates Milestone By Ann Mead Ash

In 1962, Henry and Edna Martin opened a produce stand along Route 23 in East Earl, under the shade of two large maple trees in their front yard. By the late 1960s, the Martins’ daughter, Miriam, had married Lebanon County native Marvin Weaver, and the pair had taken over the stand. According to Ashley Hopkins, marketing manager with Shady Maple Company, Marvin had a saying: “Pile it high, and watch it fly. The saying See Shady Maple pg 7

The Weaver family, including (front, from left) Miriam, Marvin, (back) Phillip, Curt, and Linford, are celebrating 50 years since the opening of the Shady Maple Farm Market as a produce stand owned by Miriam’s parents, Henry and Edna Martin.

The post connected her to Alan Noll, current secretary of the Legion, who notified Mike Martin, president of the United Veterans Council of New Holland. The Veterans Council is the organization that holds the annual Memorial Day Pilgrimages. The council arranged to hold at dedication a Frank’s home on July 11 at 10 a.m. Frank, who is 93, served in Germany in 1943 and 1944 during World War II. During the July 11 proceedings, he sat in a chair in front of his home. Near him was a table decorated in red, white, and blue and festooned with stars and stripes. On the right side of the table was a photo of Frank in his Army uniform taken while he was serving. To the left of the photo of Frank was a likeness of his brother John P. Monteforte, who also served in the Army during World War II. John was killed while serving in Germany, and his Purple Heart was placed in front of his picture. On the left side of the table was the flag from John’s casket.

The detail included a bugler who played reveille and a shortened version of the United States Army hymn, “The Army Goes Rolling Along.” A number of family members and friends, including Frank’s son, John, who was named for his uncle, gathered for the ceremony.

Thanks to Both Hands, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving orphans, widows and Christian adoptive families, Tim and Tiffany Miller of Mount Joy will receive financial aid for their upcoming adoption and a local widow will be given assistance with maintenance projects around her home. As part of the Both Hands program, adoptive families are asked to coordinate a service project at a widow’s home. In turn, the family receives sponsorships that are used to finance the cost of the adoption. The Both Hands name symbolizes one hand for the widow and the other hand for the orphans. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Miller family and a team of volunteers will work at the home of a widow who resides in Ephrata. Her husband died unexpectedly this spring after being in a car accident and then contracting the COVID-19 infection. Her home is

in need of some repairs, including landscaping, painting, minor electrical work and general tasks that are difficult for her to complete. After their application was approved by Both Hands, the Millers were asked to find a local widow in need. “We connected with (the widow in Ephrata) through a friend of a friend,” Tiffany noted. “Thankfully, she was the first widow we met and it all worked out. She is so grateful.” Both Hands, a Tennesseebased charity, was founded by JT Olson, who was taking part in a golf fundraiser. He sent out letters asking for sponsorships. “A friend wrote back on the letter and said, ‘Maybe if you were working on a widow’s house, I would sponsor you, but you are just playing golf,’” Tiffany said. “He decided he had a big heart for adopting and he and his family adopted as well, and he (formed) this organization.” Tiffany and Tim currently have three sons - Cameron, 8; Lincoln, 6; and Theo, 3, who was adopted from South Korea in 2018. They are currently waiting to be matched with a boy or girl from South Korea. “We’re hoping we will get a match soon,” said TIffany. “Once we are matched it’s about a year until we (can) travel and bring the child home.” In preparation for the upcoming service project, the Millers recruited about 30 to 40 friends and family members to help out with the work. “Our church, Victory Church in Lancaster, is also involved, and people are bringing friends that are really handy to come help us out,” said Tiffany. “Local businesses donated all of the supplies that we are going to use.” Donating businesses include Home Depot in Lancaster, Longenecker’s Hardware in Manheim, Dave’s Roll Off Service in Ephrata, Advanced Trim Specialties in Kinzers and Buck’s Lawn Care Service in Lititz. “We’re planning to work from

“All the money that comes in from sponsorship letters goes directly toward a tax-deductible fund that Both Hands sets up for us to pay for adoption expenses.” The Millers also hope to raise awareness about the Both Hands organization. “We just loved the concept of it and wanted to be able to share it with other people and be able to fundraise this way, too,” Tiffany said. PENNYSAVER

Shady Maple from pg 1 sold. In addition, the self-service area features a section of inhouse smoked products; storemade bacon is the best-seller. Visitors to the store will also find a 50-foot deli featuring 10 types of sweet bologna and serving more than 600 customers each Saturday. A separate soup and salad area sells up to 1,500 pounds of macaroni salad each month. Homemade pizzas sold in that area increased in sales during the pandemic from up to 80 per day to between 100 and 150. The Weavers’ sons, Curt, along with Phillip and Linford, grew up spending time in the store. Phil, the oldest, officially went to work there in 1983, followed by Curt in 1985 and Lin in 1989. Phil and Lin became co-presidents in 2015. Marvin acknowledges that timing has made a difference in the growth of Shady. After expanding in 1982, the Weavers saved money for the next remodel, but zoning restrictions held them off until 1992. Although that expansion cost more than originally planned, Marvin saw the bright side. “We were in a recession. That’s the time to go for it. You get the best prices. We saved 10% to 20%.” As the market has grown, the Weavers have continued to express their gratitude for all they have been given. According to Miriam, God has blessed them tremendously. The market now employs more than 380 people, and the Weavers know that each one’s attitude contributes to a positive shopping experience for customers. The Weavers are also grateful for the customers who come from near and far to shop at the store. Several events have been planned to celebrate the anniversary. An outdoor vendor fair will be held on Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. From Wednesday, Aug. 12, through Tuesday, Aug. 18, a guessing game giveaway will be held at the store. Visitors to the store can enter to win a grand prize drawing from Wednesday, Aug. 5, to Friday, Aug. 21. Winners will be announced on Saturday, Aug. 22, the same day a sidewalk food fair will be held at the farm market. More information about the market may be found at www.shady-maple.com/farm -market.

Eviction Prevention Help Available The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted economic and housing security in the past few months, but help is available through the Eviction Prevention Network (EPN). EPN is made up of 13 community benefit organizations throughout Lancaster County and will serve the entirety of Lancaster city and the county. It will aid households that are at risk of losing their homes through eviction due to changes in income due to COVID-19. Both renters and landlords can participate in the program, with a primary focus on households below 80% of the area median income, which is $63,600 annually. To start the process of getting help, households can call 2-1-1 and be assessed for eligibility. Eligible households can then participate in EPN

partner-facilitated tenant/landlord mediation; engage in ongoing case management and/or financial coaching; and possibly receive rental assistance. The EPN anticipates that there will be waves of need over the next 12 months. Tabor Community Services serves as the lead agency in the EPN’s COVID-19 response. Money for the program is from public and private organizations and funders. The most recent and largest funders are the Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority, the City of Lancaster, and the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act of 2020. To donate to the program, readers may visit www.tabornet.org.

referred to offering generous amounts for sale, initially of produce, but later of meats, bakery treats, and other food items, and then watching customers take advantage of the plenty as it flew off the shelves. “Everything is bigger and better at Shady Maple,” said Hopkins. Once the Weavers took over the roadside stand, the business began to grow. The Weavers first enclosed the stand with a block building in 1970, expanding to offer groceries that same year. In 1976, the store expanded to 45,000 square feet, and in 1982 it increased to 72,000 square feet. In 2009, it grew to 130,000 square feet - the size it is today. Groceries found in the store now include more than 300 types of tea bags and Shady’s own bulk food items in the freezer department. The dairy department features more than 340 varieties of yogurt, several of which are locally made. The initial stand offered local produce. Today, the produce section features more than 300 items, but fruits and vegetables are still carefully chosen by the owners. For many years, Marvin drove a truck weekly to the Philadelphia produce auction, leaving in the wee hours each Tuesday. Now his son Linford, who oversees the farm market and serves as co-CEO of the company with his brother Phillip, makes the trip. During the summer months, much of the produce sold is grown within 10 miles of the store. In 1974, the in-store bakery was added, creating the flavored breads (a brainchild of Marvin’s on a sleepless night), creative cakes, whoopie pies in several flavors, and doughnuts with which the name Shady Maple has become synonymous. Today, more than 60 employees work in the bakery area, which often sells more than 7,000 doughnuts in a day. In fact, the store sold more than 3 million doughnuts in 2019. In 2013, Shady got its own mascot when Whoop E. Pie was introduced to the delight of many. By 1976, a meat-cutting area had been added to the store. The meat counter offers personal service that hearkens back to the days of the neighborhood butcher and cuts meats for free. During this summer’s ground beef sale, nearly the equivalent of two 18-wheelers of hamburger was

ELANCO First 10 from pg 1 will meet kindergartners who are already there, said Weaver. “We are working on making children more familiar with their schools. The group has a special concern about children who live in outlying parts of the district. “Another goal we have is the child-to-school connection with children who are in more rural areas where there might not be access to preschool, she said, adding that district teacher Alice Irwin will officially take the role of ELANCO Pre-K team point person for prekindergarten events and programming, First 10/P-3 initiatives and planning, and prekindergarten partnerships for the district in August. She is scheduled to begin doing home visits as a prekindergarten liaison in the fall of 2020. Irwin has been working in the district for 15 years, teaching kindergarten and first grade. She has a master’s degree in early literacy and a family literacy certificate. Weaver noted that the core First 10 team includes about 11 members. Among them are Emily Keener from Headstart, Jenn Morales from NHELC, Beth Eberly from CAP, and Weaver, representing CAP and CrossNet. Five school district representatives who are members of the team are Kim Andersen,

Brecknock principal; Greg Frederick, director of elementary instruction for ELANCO; Karen Senior, elementary Title 1 support specialist; and Lauren Hillen, elementary Title 1 support. “We meet with the larger group five or six times per year, said Weaver. “Our plan is still being formed. Information about the district’s kindergarten program may be found at www.elanco.org.

achieve those goals. Setting goals and evaluating existing programs are part of the group’s purpose, according to Weaver. “There are several phases,â€? she noted, adding that the members are being trained through webinars given by David Jacobson, national consultant for the First 10 Initiative for this area. “We are meeting, taking webinars, training to transition (to the new program),â€? she said. “We work together as a team.â€? She credited CAP with helping to move these efforts forward. Weaver said the group has set specific goals for the ELANCO area. “The emphasis is on trying to connect ‌ our families with the resources that are available to them,â€? she said. “We want to build a relationship between the family and the school district before the children are even in the (school) buildings.â€? Weaver explained that one way to reach that goal is to coordinate with each local preschool. The partnership results in a time for each elementary school to host the preschoolers on a field trip to meet a teacher and the school principal and to take a tour of a kindergarten classroom in the school that child will eventually attend. “The principal will read a book to (the children), and they

Weaver has worked to bring a representative from each area preschool, including Pine Grove Preschool, Kinderhaus, and New Holland Early Learning Center (NHELC), along with Headstart, Community Action Partnership (CAP), and the ELANCO Library. Weaver has also been working to bring smaller home-based preschools on board. “We want everybody at the table, said Weaver, who noted that the group generally meets every other month. She added that the group has focused on a transition plan, where each stakeholder outlines what they are doing, and the discussion centers on what could be done to

Local couple Linda and Philip Malin has been photographing local furry and feathered family members for 30 years. However, the coronavirus pandemic challenged their business, which involved pet photography home visits and pet portrait events at local pet stores. They had to find a way to survive this crisis, so Linda came up with the idea to put pet photos on masks. Pet owners are invited to send the Malins an image by email or mail and then place an order for a Furry Face Mask at www.Linda AndPhilipMalin.com. Contact information for submitting photos is available on the aforementioned website. The Malins will tweak the photo, print it on a mask and mail it directly to the customer.

Cub Scout Pack 148 recently collected food items for CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. Scouts Owen Martin (left) and Castiel Valotta helped deliver the donations to the food bank. Cub Scout Pack 148 recently collected food donations for CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. In May, Castiel Valotta, a Cub Scout in Pack 148, noticed empty shelves at local grocery stores. He remembered how Scouting for Food events helped many people in the community and wondered how many more families were being affected by COVID-19. His family came up with the idea to create an Amazon Wish List, which included an option for people to donate items from a list that Castiel created. Items included canned meats, pasta, sauce, and cereal. Castiel also

reached out to the families of Cub Scout Pack 148, and they shared the wish list on Facebook. Word started to spread and the Scouts began collecting food donations. New Holland Cub Scouts also offered a way to donate by having a non-contact pickup option. The food collection ran for two weeks. A small group of Cub Scouts and their family members delivered three carloads of food to CrossNet Ministries on July 2. Castiel also created a video to thank the community and everyone who helped make the event a success.

Aaron’s Acres Finds Permanent Home In Manheim

MONDAY, AUGUST 17 @ 1:00 PM

housing therapeutic alpacas in a barn area, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. Pleasant View also plans to expand a hydroponics program on the site. The farm property where Aaron’s Acres will be located offers additional possibilities to the organization. “We will have farm land to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers,” said Paskoff, who sees the move as an opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began providing activities for 22- to 30-year-olds in early 2019. “Aaron’s Acres has been for ages 5 to 21, but we are going to go to age 30,” said Paskoff. “We want to have meaningful programs (for individuals in that age group),” she noted, adding that farming, and working with animals, will be options along with taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. “(Our clients) will be able to go into the (retirement) community and play games and have a snack with residents,” said Paskoff, who noted that

clients could also volunteer at the library. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be manned by its participants. In addition to the benefits offered to Aaron’s Acres, Paskoff is excited about the purpose of the cultural center, noting that Hollinger hopes to bring other nonprofit organizations to the campus. “(It will be) a lot of different organizations coming together to create a strong community with people of all abilities and ages,” said Paskoff. “It’s a dream come true.” Paskoff said that if the way is clear, the cultural center will be completed by 2022. She noted that an aquatics center is planned for completion in 2023. For Paskoff, the move to the new center will signal an important shift for Aaron’s Acres. “The first 20 years, we just grew,” said Paskoff. “Now I feel for the next 20 years, we will launch and take off in a different way.” For more information, readers may visit www.aaronsacres.org. Aaron’s Acres hopes to have a new home at the Hoffer Farm property located adjacent to Pleasant View Retirement Community on North Penryn Road in Manheim. Pleasant View plans to build a cultural center on the property with the goal to complete it by 2022.

PS12308

In 2018, Aaron’s Acres celebrated 20 years of providing socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, the sixweek camp served 220 campers. For the past several years, Aaron’s Acres has been searching for a permanent home. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, had looked at a number of county locations, but nothing suitable had been found. “We really wanted to be part of an inclusive community,” recalled Paskoff. “We didn’t want … an entire building to ourselves.” In the past year, Paskoff began talking to Jonathan Hollinger, executive director of Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The retirement community plans to build a cultural center on the Hoffer Farm property across from the memory care and skilled nursing care facilities on North Penryn Road. Pleasant View has invited the Manheim Borough Library to be part of the center, and Paskoff reported that Aaron’s Acres has been invited as well. “Pleasant View will build a building, and we will have a condo relationship,” said Paskoff, who noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to utilize up to 7,000 square feet in the building. Paskoff noted that other plans for the cultural center include

The Friends of the Lancaster Public Library will host their 65th annual Big Book Sale from Monday to Wednesday, Aug. 10 to 12, at the former Bon Ton site at Park City Center, 600 Park City Center, Lancaster. The book sale will be open on Aug. 10 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Tuesday, Aug. 11, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Aug. 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Aug. 12, items will be half-price. Payment with a credit card is available, parking is free, and the mall offers various on-site eating options. The sale will be in a new location this year, but the prices and the large inventory will remain the same. Customers will find more than 250,000 used books plus thousands of other items including vinyl records, sheet music, audiobooks, CDs, and DVDs. Individually priced books, including collectible and current fiction and nonfiction, will be for sale. The health and safety of customers and volunteers are of highest importance; therefore, the Friends are following Pennsylvania mandates. Face masks or face shields must be worn at all times, and social distancing will be in effect. Public restrooms and drinking fountains will not be available in the former Bon Ton site, but customers will find comfort facilities a few steps away inside the mall. Customers are asked to postpone their shopping trip if they are feeling unwell or if they have recently traveled to any states on the Pennsylvania travel quarantine list. Volunteers are sought for the sale. On Sunday, Aug. 9, between 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., volunteers are needed to set up tables, put up signs, and unpack boxes of books. Volunteers should enter via the doors on the east side of the building, near TGI Friday’s. In addition, volunteers are needed on Aug. 12 beginning at 6 p.m. to help with cleanup. The Friends and volunteers must remove everything from the facility, including unsold books, tables, and signs. Volunteers must be over the age of 14. Volunteers do not need to sign up for a date and time. They may simply arrive when they are able to help. For more information and to express interest in volunteering, readers may call 717-898-1560 or email redrosebooks@aol.com. Masks or face shields are required for all volunteers. Mary Armstrong is again the chair of the book sale. Sixty-five years ago, the first Friends of Lancaster Public Library book sale raised $154. The Friends now raise nearly $200,000 annually by holding book sales, hosting fundraisers, and operating two used book stores. Proceeds from the Friends’ efforts directly benefit Lancaster Public Library and its patrons. For more information, readers may visit www.lancaster publiclibrary.org/library-friends.
