New Scents And Flavors To Highlight Summer Fest Wings And Pork Loin Added To Competitions By Ann Mead Ash

For 2018, the committee that organizes Summer Fest - a barbecue competition held in New Holland Memorial Community Park in the 400 block of Jackson Street - decided to offer visitors a larger selection of food for purchase. “People complained that (the barbecue) smells good but they can’t try anything,” said committee member Bryant Glick. “We have 10 food truck vendors coming, and we will have a lot more food variety (available),” said Glick. Having more food items for sale will not be the only change attendees will experience when they visit this year’s Summer Fest, which will be held in the park on Friday, Aug. 24, from noon until 9 p.m. and on Saturday, Aug. 25,

Family Fun And Lots Of Peaches By Ann Mead Ash

Two years ago, Cedar Grove Church, 4833 Division Highway, East Earl, changed the name of a fundraiser that had been held for nearly two decades from the Cedar Grove Peach Festival to the Cedar Grove Church Peach Fest and Family Fun Day. The 2018 event, which will include peach-flavored foods and baked goods, a flea market, a book sale, a silent auction, and children’s games, will be held at the church on Saturday, Aug. 18, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The church has installed a hitching post in the parking lot for the use of members of the Plain community who wish to See Cedar Grove pg 8

from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pork loin has been added to the several types of barbecue that are judged by members of the Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS), and the inaugural Bell and Evans First Responder Wing Throw Down will be held. According to Glick, the first responder units will compete by making wings in two categories. A People’s Choice competition will be open to the public. “People will pay $1 per wing to sample wings from as many teams as they want, and they can vote for their favorite,” explained Glick. “Whichever team has the most votes will win a grill worth $1,000.” In the second category, KCBS judges will vote, and the winning team will receive $500. There is no fee for first responder teams to take part in the contest, which is being overseen by J. Clair Witwer. Those who prefer other food items to wings may visit the food vendors selling items ranging from barbecue to ice cream. Glick listed french fries, tacos, Caribbean cuisine, and grilled cheese among the many foods that will be available for purchase. In addition, a local barbecue supply business will have samples of grilled pork loin available throughout the event for attendees to try. Committee member Bill Weidner noted that visitors should know that many of the vendors selling barbecue also have teams taking part in the competition. In addition, Garden Spot High School FFA will sell chicken barbecue at the event with the goal of raising funds to attend a national conference. The Summer Fest competition, which is sanctioned by the KCBS, will include more than 70 barbecue teams from as far away as Ohio and Virginia. Teams will arrive by Friday morning, and on Friday night, they will begin to scent the air of New Holland with the smells of barbecued sausage, chicken, pork ribs, pork, beef brisket, chef’s choice, whole hog, and pork loin to compete in Summer Fest’s designated categories. Prizes will be awarded in several categories and will include the New Holland Championship, as well as the Pennsylvania State Barbecue Championship, which will go to the Pennsylvania team that has amassed the most points in at least three state contests. According to Glick, the team of Lo’-N-Slo’ BBQ of New Providence retained its title at the 2017 event. The overall winner of the New Holland event will receive a $2,500 cash prize and be eligible to compete in the American Royal CookOff in Kansas City, Mo., in October. Golf Tournament from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

Her name is Lorraine Murungu. Her son, who is named Blessed, was born with cerebral palsy, and he is paraplegic and unable to speak. Murungu has learned to make rag dolls, a product that can be marketed heavily near the beginning of the school year in Zimbabwe, where Murungu lives. A loan from a HOPE International group has helped make her business possible. When Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, landed in Zimbabwe with a team of 22 others in January, he was thinking about the difference HOPE International has made by teaching individuals in 15 countries about savings groups and microfinance. But as he watched Murungu and other women who have benefited from HOPE as they worshipped God, he found himself learning from them. “I heard them talk, praying for each other and supporting each other, said Rutt, who was struck by the humility and gratitude he witnessed. “Before we left, Lorraine asked me, ‘What can we pray for, for you as you go back to Pennsylvania?’ That struck me as insightful and showed me

so much depth of character and integrity, said Rutt. HOPE International is a Lancasterbased nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. The organization is currently planning its 18th annual golf tournament at Heritage Hills Golf Resort, 2700 Mount Rose Ave., York, on Friday, Sept. 14. Round one of the fourperson scramble-format tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. Round two will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. Morning golfers will receive a boxed breakfast and buffet lunch, and afternoon participants will receive a boxed lunch and a buffet dinner. According to HOPE special events coordinator Carley Bilindabagabo, the tournament can comfortably accommodate about 160 golfers per round. Special prizes will be given to golfers who are closest to the pin, make the longest drive, or shoot a hole-in-one. Through working with her savings group, called “Kuwirirana, which loosely translates to “getting along, Murungu was able to purchase a sewing machine she can use to make rag dolls. Her life is one of many touched by HOPE, but Rutt

asks those who hear about her life to learn from Murungu. “I want to encourage us to get away from the idea that we have the answers and we are just here to help someone by sending them money, he said. “I want us to look for ways we can learn from each other (because) we are on a journey together, and we should be praying for each other. To make the journeys of HOPE clients more real to golfers who participate in the tournaments, organizers have devised an activity to engage golfers on the links.

“We will have client images with their names and businesses stationed on the course, said Bilindabagabo. “Each golfer will receive a card, and they fill in the card as they go through the course with the name of the business, she explained. If the golfer completes the whole card correctly, he or she can be entered into a drawing for a prize. Bilindabagabo noted that much of the $350,000 HOPE would like to raise from the tournament will be donated in the form of sponsorships. A variety of spon-

with orphanages and families to help those children have better mental health,” said Drew. Now, as their ministry expands - with locations in Honduras and inner-city Chicago in addition to Guatemala - Cindy says the focus is changing. “We are switching from the Metcalfs in Guatemala to We Help Children as an organization,” explained Cindy. “It’s not about us, but about lots of layers of ministry. We hope it multiplies to lots of countries even if we are not there.” With a goal of helping children in crisis wherever they are, We Help Children will hold its first Banquet With a Fiesta Flair on Sunday, Sept. 30, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens, 3716 E. Newport Road, Gordonville. The menu will feature stations sponsored by local restaurants that specialize in Spanish-style dishes, as well as a possible nachos bar. Video testimonies from young people whose lives have been changed by what God is doing in Guatemala will be on the agenda, and a live band will play Christian Spanish music. Guest speaker for the evening will be Christian psychiatrist and bishop Dr. Enos Daniel Martin of Elizabethtown, who will speak on the connection between mental health and prayer. Martin was a member of the faculty at Penn State Hershey for 20 years. He also spent two decades working in prison psychiatry. Martin is currently the medical director of the Naaman Center, a Christian-based alcohol and drug rehabilitation and treatment center. On the topic of prayer and mental health, Martin has said, “Through all of my journey, I’ve become more and more impressed with what God can do through His humble servants who seek His face in prayer and less impressed with what I can accomplish through my training and degrees.” Drew made it clear that choosing Martin was born of a concern for children everywhere. “We invite people to come and learn how to help and how to get help for children,” he said. “Our vision is not just to help children far away. We want to help children and their families where they are (because) we want children thriving in their families.” Drew added that We Help Children is available to help families in need who contact the organization. “God has also given us a vision to do more in the poor communities,” said Drew. We Help Children is currently working to set up Children and Family Help Centers in communities so families can receive local help and give help in return. The organization is preparing to start two centers in Guatemala and one in Honduras. The center in Chicago is manned by Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala. “She came to us to … learn how to work with children in crisis, and she is a gifted counselor,” explained Drew. Jakus joined the ministry, answering a call to work with children in crisis through a local church in Chicago. In addition, the Metcalfs often take orphaned children who need extra help into their home and work with children who are aging out of the orphanage to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work, and they graduate from us to more independence,” said Drew. Cindy noted that nearly half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help. There is no cost to attend the banquet, but seating is limited to 200 on a first-come, first-served basis and reservations are necessary to attend. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to attend may register by calling 717517-2359 or emailing HelpChildrenWithUs@yahoo.com. Registration must be completed by Saturday, Sept. 8. According to event organizer Betty Ferstler, donations of books for this year’s book sale have been plentiful. “We have a large (number) of donated books that were well taken care of,” she said, noting that children’s books, novels, summer reading, and cookbooks will be on display. that inside flea market vendors will include two jewelry makers, one selling silver jewelry, a vendor selling brand-name personal care products, and representatives of the Carol Stark Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping area teenagers, selling wreaths and plants. According to Zook, several outside flea market spaces will be available for rent on a first-come, firstserved basis that morning beginning at 6:30 a.m. According to organizer Barb MacMaster, this year’s silent auction will have at least 20 items on display, including an adult bike, a bike helmet, theme baskets, and gift certificates to local businesses. MacMaster noted that some funds raised by the silent auction will be designated for a special purpose this year. “There will be a few items in the silent auction (that) the proceeds will (be earmarked for) the church’s Caring Fund, which is overseen by the deacon’s ministry,” explained MacMaster. Funds raised by the event will be used for the church’s general fund. In the past, 20 percent of those funds have been designated for special purposes. This year, 10 percent of the money raised will be donated to Hands Across the Street, an outreach of Columbia Presbyterian Church, and another 10 percent will be designated for another mission project. The church is located at the intersection of routes 322 and 897. Readers who would like more information about the event may visit www.cedar grovepresbyterianlanc.org or call 717-354-5573.

There are 40-some auctions across the United States and Canada, said Ken Sensenig, assistant executive director of MCC East Coast. “It’s a way people in their home communities and right here in southern Lancaster County can literally reach out and touch the world. MCC works in 56 countries around the world. The event will begin with a roast pork dinner to eat in or take out from 4 to 7 p.m. on Aug. 10. This will also be an opportunity to preview auction items, including quilts, that will be sold on Aug. 11. full speed. Bidders may come early for a country breakfast of pancakes, sausage and eggs starting at 6 a.m. to prepare for the start of the auction at 8:30 a.m. Household items, crafts and more will start on Block 1 at 8:30 a.m., while farm items, hardware and tools will begin on Block 2 at 8:45 a.m., followed by an auction of shrubbery and lawn furniture. A children’s auction will start at 10 a.m. Large furniture will be featured at 11 a.m., followed by special items at noon. Special items this year will include a new spring wagon and playground equipment. At 12:30 p.m., there will be an auction of sheds, gazebos and more, followed by the quilt auction at 1 p.m. One unique item to be included in this year’s auction is a cedar chest with a bench top that features a scene of the first Gap Relief Auction from 1948 painted by Daniel Esh. The chest was created for the auction’s 50th anniversary year and was purchased by a member of the Summers family at that time. It returned to be sold again about nine years ago to a purchaser from North Carolina, and now it has returned again to the sale this year. Proceeds from the auction are important to the fundraising of the Mennonite Central Committee, which provides relief, developing and peacemaking work in the United States and around the world. Donations of new or slightly used items are being accepted for the auction. For more information or to donate, readers may contact Levi Fisher at 717-529-6187 or Ammon Stoltzfoos at 717-786-0880. Reenie Panzini, pilot program director for the True Colors adult enrichment camp being held at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E) this summer, was looking for a day program for her daughter, Sophia, who has special needs and had aged out of school. However, Panzini could not find something that quite fit her needs. “I got together with some other mothers of children with special needs, and we decided to create our own (program), said Panzini. The resulting program currently serves six individuals. “Our participants came from word of mouth, Panzini explained. True Colors, a camp for adults 21 years and up with intellectual disabilities, meets four days a week at The E, 2120 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. “We meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m., explained Panzini, who added that the program started on June 26 and will run through mid-

August. Panzini harbors hopes of turning the pilot into a year-round offering. “If things go well, we may try to become a nonprofit and turn into an adult enrichment full-day program, she said. The program gives participants an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities while learning life skills, such as cooking, which can help the individuals live independently or even help them to gain employment. Panzini and her assistant, Alex Rittenhouse, said that the group hit the ground running with an activity that involved both cooking and developing sales skills. The E hosted 100 businesses at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “pop-up job fair on June 27, where True Colors sold baked goods. “We started off with a bang, said Panzini. “We baked for four hours. We made lots of cupcakes, cookies, and glutenfree treats, and the next day the campers set up a table in the lobby. “That was a very successful day, said Rittenhouse of the job fair, noting that

the event gave campers a chance to develop important skills in the areas of socialization and developing relationships. “The job fair definitely allowed (campers) to explore what was going on (in the building), Rittenhouse said. The organizations that were present learned about True Colors as well. “We talked to people about what we were doing. It was a really great day from that aspect, Rittenhouse commented. The E is home to a number of local nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. Panzini has reached out to the tenants to let them know campers would like to help. “(We are letting them know) that if they need volunteers to do light office work or cleaning, we can help, she said. “We are hoping (volunteering) will be a big part of (participants’) days. Panzini added that the campers are already helping Lori Cubell, executive director of the Emerald Foundation, in a number of ways. In addition to the volunteering opportunities, Panzini and Rittenhouse have

Bank of Bird-in-Hand, a communitybased, full-service bank with assets of approximately $308 million as of June 30, has announced that it has launched its mobile banking unit. The unit, which is a 29-foot-long, full-service mobile bank on wheels, has begun to travel to various locations in Lancaster and Chester counties. “As a community bank, Bank of Birdin-Hand continues to look for innovative ways to service customers with the financial products that they want and need while maintaining an efficient and cost-effective means of delivery, said Lori A. Maley, president and CEO of Bank of Bird-in-Hand. According to bank representatives, Bank of Bird-in-Hand’s success is based on its dedication to providing exceptional value, service, and convenience to small and medium-size businesses, farmers, professionals, individuals, and families. The bank aims to provide personalized service while ensuring that customers have access to a full range of products. The mobile unit has a built-in ATM, a walk-up customer service window, and also room inside for customer service representatives to open accounts and transact business. The mobile unit’s

schedule is as follows: Mondays - Honey Brook Hardware, 5004 Horseshoe Pike, Honey Brook, from 9 a.m. to noon and Brandywine Shoe Shop, 1620 Cambridge Road, Honey Brook, from 1 to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays - Noble Road Milking Equipment, 1523 Kirkwood Pike, Kirkwood, 9 a.m. to noon and R.H. Rohrer & Sons, 16 E. State St., Quarryville, from 1 to 4 p.m.; Wednesdays - Sunrise Greenhouse, 2319 Robert Fulton Highway, Peach Bottom, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Thursdays - Dutch-Way Family Restaurant, 365 Route 41, Gap, from 9 a.m. to noon and Green Tree Hardware, 1342 Georgetown Road, Quarryville, from 1 to 4 p.m.; and Fridays - A.B. Martin Roofing Supply, 82 Garden Spot Road, Ephrata, from 9 a.m. to noon and Meadow Creek Barbecue Supply, 140 W. Main St., New Holland, from 1 to 4 p.m. Bank of Bird-in-Hand has also launched a new mobile app. Through the app, individuals will be able to access secure banking tools, check spending transfer money, deposit checks, and more from their mobile phone or electronic tablet. Since 2013, Bank of Bird-in-Hand’s assets have grown from $35 million to $308 million, according to bank representatives.

As of June 30, the bank had total deposits of $249 million and total gross loans of $269 million. Representatives noted that the bank has substantially exceeded its profit projections and balance sheet growth when compared to its original business plan as a result of support from the local community. Bank of Bird-in-Hand has been recognized as one of the Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies in both 2018 and 2017 by the Central Pennsylvania Business Journal, and, according to DepositAccounts.com, Bank of Bird-in-Hand was ranked 40th on its Top 200 Healthiest Banks in America Listing for 2018. The bank has also earned a 5-Star rating from BauerFinancial.

“We are pleased to be recognized among the top-performing banks of our asset size, Maley noted. “We take this recognition as further proof of the success and profitability of our customerfocused banking model and of the impact that quality banking products can produce for the customers and communities we serve. The bank’s Bird-in-Hand branch is located at 309 N. Ronks Road and may be reached at 717-768-8811. Its Intercourse branch is located at 3540 Old Philadelphia Pike and may be reached at 717-929-0829. planned a number of activities for the campers, including playing basketball in The E gym and helping the foundation’s chef in the kitchen with food preparation. “The chef is teaching them chopping (of vegetables), said Panzini. A succulent craft, games, and a scavenger hunt have all been part of the curriculum this summer, as well. Panzini has drawn on resources and her experience raising a child with special needs to design the program. “Sophia has been in special-needs classes and camps since she was 8, said Panzini. “We have a lot of teachers advising us. Readers who would like to learn more about True Colors may look for updates on The Emerald Foundation Facebook page. The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) is holding auditions for the 2018-19 choir year. Auditions include matching pitch, singing in tune, using head voice, maintaining a melodic line while another line is being sung and singing one prepared piece of music. MCCL serves more than 160 singers in Carol Choir, grades two to five; Concert Choir, grades six to eight; and Chamber Choir, grades nine to 12. The choirs practice weekly throughout the school year in preparation for a concert series in early December and in the spring. Singers rehearse Tuesday evenings in late August through early May. Prospective singers should schedule a 15-minute audition time slot with director Sarah Wingard at 540383-9986 or carolandconcerchoir @lancastermennonite.org. MCCL is also accepting registrations for two nonauditioned programs that develop vocal skills: Prelude Music for children in kindergarten through second grade and Choristers for grades two through eight. Classes are held Tuesday evenings from September through November and again in February through April. To register, readers may contact Audrey Livengood at
