Gardener Amanda Dise, enjoyed dirt dessert with a class of children, and presented a citation to NHELC director Wanda Bortzel, congratulating the organization on its history and achievements. Dawn Ranck-Hower, pastor at the church, led the tour of the gardens, explaining that church member Ray Hurst suggested the garden a few years ago when he and his wife began attending. Hurst, who had experience running a garden at a previous church, spoke to RanckHower, and she turned to the church property committee. “They said, ‘Of course,’” recalled RanckHower, who added, “The DNA of See Garden Spot pg 5

When Ezra “Ez” and Elizabeth Stoltzfus talked about moving from a farmette to Fairmount, Ez was concerned that he might not have enough to do at their new home. To assuage his concerns, Elizabeth taught Ez to make hats on a loom, a craft she had been introduced to by a Farm Crest apartment resident around 2011. “I got an interest in it because it was something to do,” said Ez, but Elizabeth sees her husband, now 92, as doing more than just staving off boredom. “Ez is an artist,” she noted. “I never taught him (to put colored) stripes in, but he does.” “I don’t want to keep it all one color,” said Ez. “When I get so far, I trade off to another color. (I choose) something that will blend together (with the main color).” Ez’s understanding of blending colors goes beyond making hats. He took painting classes in the past, and in 2000 he painted a

talking about “The Greatest Showman” and decided to give the music a try. “The arrangements I found have worked out really well,” said Fitz, who wrote the drill himself. Band camp was held at GSHS from July 26 through 30, with morning sessions from 8 a.m. to noon and evening sessions from 6:30 p.m. until the light faded. Because of construction in the stadium, the camp was held at the field adjacent to the tennis courts. About 100 students turned out for camp, led by Fitz and assistant teachers Colton Henry and Laura Henry, who instructs the color guard. Veronica Fox, Lejla Hamzic, and Bryna Kelly serve as drum majors. The band includes 21 color guard members. Band boosters set up a tent at one end of the field where they provided snack foods and shade during camp. Theme nights, which encouraged students to dress up for the evening practice, included “Olympics/USA,” “Wild West,” and section night, among others. On Friday night, parents were invited to come and watch the group perform the fall drill. The big top theme of a show called “The Greatest Showman” gave Fitz the opportunity to incorporate circus elements into the drill, including a tightrope walk and a surprise finale. Color guard members will work with a variety of props, including sabres, rifles, 5-foot flags, ribbons, swing flags, and massive flags, and they will also dress as characters from “The Greatest Showman.” The show will start off with “The Greatest Show,” which Hamzic referred to as “fast and bubbly.” The ballad, See GSHS pg 3

“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the

biker community and the (Plain) community.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to Route 23 through New Holland to Route 897. The ride will end at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl. A short ceremony including the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, announcements, and a safety briefing will be held at ECC.

which is “Never Enough,” will transition into “From Now On.” Kelly explained that “Never Enough” moves slowly, but “From Now On” picks up the pace, presenting challenges in both the drill and the music. The final song, “This Is Me,” will feature a trumpet solo by Finn Wenrich. Color guard duets in “Never Enough” will be performed by Maggie Bauer and Taylor Martin and in “This Is Me” by Mimi Whenry and Sarah Babb. In the summer of 2020, there was no band camp due to COVID-19 restrictions. Fitz said that being able to have camp again feels nice. “It was obvious from the first day that the kids are excited to be here,” he said. “They are so energetic and happy.” Section leader Emma Kauffman echoed Fitz’s sentiments about being together, saying. “We built a lot of relationships (during camp).”

At Weaverland, Andrea McHenry, a representative of FREE, a Berks County-based anti-human trafficking organization active in Reading, will speak briefly. McHenry said she plans to share statistics about human trafficking. “We do education on how to take action against human trafficking and how to identify and respond to victims,” explained McHenry. “We do prevention work with children in an effort to keep them safe.” FREE opened The Resting Place, a women’s dropin center meeting basic needs and providing safe housing for those who request it, in Reading in 2019. The organization is in the process of opening a refuge home in the Reading area.

With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne. this church is that when you have something, you share it.” RanckHower explained to Aument; Tina Thompson, outreach director for the senator; and Kimberly Early, director of public policy and advocacy for the Pennsylvania Association for the Education of Young Children, that the children recently picked and husked corn in the morning before enjoying it for lunch. The children receive breakfast, lunch, and two snacks each day at the center. Food is raised first for use by NHELC and NHELC families and then shared with the community via the CrossNet Ministries Food and Nutrition Center. Volunteers meet on Tuesday evenings to tend the garden, and clients of Revelations of Freedom Ministries help complete heavy work like digging potatoes. Last year, more than 10,000 pounds of food were raised in the two gardens. Aument toured inside the building, visiting classrooms and the newly remodeled kitchen, which has done double duty sanitizing toys during the last several months. In the garden located near the church entrance, Dise and fellow Master Gardener Kathy Bomberger hold classes with some of the approximately 100 children who attend NHELC. On the day of Aument’s visit, Dise discussed weather, rainfall, and insects with the children and reviewed the elements a garden needs to grow, including sun, soil, and water. One of the children pulled a beet from the earth at her instruction, and the class ended with Dise reading the book “Wonderful Worms” and telling the children about the earthworms and their love of wet dirt. The group then adjourned to their classroom to make dirt dessert with pudding and crumbled chocolate cookies. Following the dirt dessert, Aument presented Bortzel with the citation from the Pennsylvania Senate and congratulated her on the decades of service NHELC has provided to the local community and beyond. ATGLEN MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH: E. Main and Dallas Sts., Atglen, PA. Joe Newsome, Interim Pastor. Join us Sundays at 11am as we preach Christ crucified, risen and coming again so all may come to a personal, saving relationship with Christ.

Knitting Together - meets on Monday evenings in the lobby of the Wheat Ridge apartment building. The hats they make are distributed to Moldova, orphanages in Romania, and to other places where they are needed. A large number reach their final destinations via the Lamb’s Loom, a Texas-based ministry. Hats are also given to the knitters’ families and friends. Elizabeth happily displayed photos of children and others who have received the hats in locations around the world. Elizabeth explained that the hats can be made in four sizes, ranging from infants to two intermediate sizes for children and then adults. Knitting Together will accept donations of yarn but noted that cotton and wool are not preferred. Ez favors Orlon acrylic by Red Heart. Elizabeth noted that if a special color is needed, she and Ez will purchase it. Those who wish to donate yarn may call 717-723-2242 to make arrangements. Knitting Together held its first meeting in October of 2020 after a Fairmount activity director challenged members of an exercise class to try something new. Elizabeth recalled that one of the residents said she was frustrated in her attempts to learn to knit on a loom. “My ears perked up,” said Elizabeth. “I made it known to her that I could probably help.” When more residents joined in the conversation, Elizabeth arranged for her and Ez and the others to meet in the lobby, and the group was formed. Members, in addition to Elizabeth, include Ruth Weaver, Elsie Stauffer, Anna Groff, Esther Becker, Ann Rathman, Edie Lausch, Edith Lorah, and Carol Sensenig. “We’re knitting together socially and spiritually,” said Elizabeth.

winter scene from his imagination. The painting hangs on the wall over the chair where Ez works with his hand-held loom, turning out about one adult hat every two days. Elizabeth finishes the tops of the hats for him, and the pair estimates that he has made and donated thousands in the 10 years he has been producing them. Elizabeth did not stop with teaching Ez. In the last year, she has taught several other residents to make hats on the loom, and the group - called

CONNECT from pg 10 resource to help inspire innovations was already in place. CONNECT, which has been bringing together children’s ministry leaders for the purposes of networking, brainstorming, and fellowship for several years, was created by Deb Hinkel, former director of the Children and Family Ministries at LBC. In the spring of 2020, the group began meeting online. In addition to bringing together more than 50 ministry leaders each month, the virtual gatherings featured well-

known speakers from around the world and attracted attendees from up and down the East Coast of the United States. Kobi Martin, pastor of children’s ministries at Hopewell Church in Elverson, participated, and he appreciated the opportunity to gain perspective. “For me, the most valuable thing … is a space to step out of all the little details of ministry to take a look at the big picture,” he said. “CONNECT provides the time and space to talk about what we are

really trying to accomplish and hear the successes, failures, and struggles of other children’s ministries.” Mary Edwards, director of KidMin at Gateway Church, Parkesburg, noted that the timing of the presentation about “Online Children’s Ministry” at a November 2019 gathering well before COVID-19 restrictions were in place, was especially helpful to her. “Dr. Sarah Holmes Zoomed into our time together, (and) she taught us methods to engage children virtually through various

teaching styles,” recalled Edwards. Once the pandemic hit, CONNECT became an invaluable resource. “(CONNECT) was super helpful during the pandemic when suddenly all the rules changed, and we all needed to figure out how to redefine success, how to use new resources, and not lose our minds at the same time,” said Martin. He pointed out that CONNECT organizers calling in speakers from across the globe during virtual meetings was “super cool and encouraging.” Edwards said that her involvement in CONNECT has given her tools to strengthen her ministry and that she often returns from meetings with information she can use to train her KidMin leaders at the church. During the pandemic, she was inspired to offer a Remote Learning Center in the church, where students had a safe space that provided Wi-Fi and allowed students to complete school assignments while parents worked. Esther Zimmerman, interim chair of Church and Ministry Leadership at LBC, who currently heads up the program, said that the group will begin meeting in the Olewine Dining Commons at LBC, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on select Thursdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Planned meeting dates include Sept. 16, Oct. 21, and Nov. 18. In 2022, meetings are planned for Jan. 27, Feb. 24, and April 28. A special evening event will be held on March 24. More information about LBC may be found by visiting www.lbc.edu.

Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.

The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively

for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel

The massive Art Deco brass chandeliers are from Stoudt’s Bier Hall.

The Historic Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium in Burlington City, N.J., will continue its year-long celebration of 20 years in business with Customer Appreciation Month all July. The Emporium will give away three gift certificates at the end of the month. Three lucky customers will have a chance to win a $50, $25, or $15 gift certificate to the multidealer shop. Each time a customer receives an invoice, they will receive a raffle ticket, thus the more a customer buys, the more chances they have of winning. Also, each month during the summer, the front sales display case will highlight dealer’s best or unusual items from their booth or case. The Emporium will be divided into three sections, starting with its dealers located on Route 130 and ending with the dealers on River Continued on page 5

Brimfield Returns At Full Strength For July Brimfield Antiques Week, the world-famous antiques markets in Brimfield, Mass., will return Tuesday to Sunday, July 13 to 18, at a full-strength capacity, meaning all shows/fields are participating during their traditional times for this weeklong event. Lori Faxon, co-owner of Tuesday’s opening field Dealers Choice and Faxon’s Midway, said “Bookings for our shows are very strong for July.” Her comments were echoed by all of the show field owners interviewed.
