Garden Spot

A sense of mystery

“This year, we are adding in eighth-graders, so we are now Garden Spot Marching Band (GSMB),” pointed out Katie Beasley, band director for the group (formerly the Garden Spot High School marching band), which introduced the rigors of marching band to both eighth- and ninthgraders during mini band camp and band camp. Mini band camp was held from 4 to 8 p.m. from July 29 through Aug. 1, and band camp ran from noon to 8 p.m. each day from Aug. 5 through 9. During camp, the nearly 60 members of the band, which includes six color guard, learned the music and drills for this year’s spy-themed show, called “Agent 54.” The three-part show features original music by Randall Standridge and a drill written by Beasley. “We will add in spy

elements throughout the season,” said Beasley, who noted that the show will open with the band members forming the shape of a question mark on the field and the color guard carrying flags with question marks on them. Later in the show, they will switch to flags with the image of a spy. “We will be setting that (sense of) mystery right away,” said Beasley. The style of the drill will be new for the GSMB, which Beasley said has traditionally performed shows set to pop music or movie themes. “This is a competitive-style show with more challenging music and a more challenging drill,” she pointed out, adding that solos will be performed by Meredith Good on mellophone and Jude Kauffman on trombone. An expanded drumline this year has given Beasley the opportunity to feature the percussionists as well.

The change in the level of

It started when PA Auction Center began renting yard sale and craft sale spaces in conjunction with Blue Ball Days. “Leon (Stoltzfus, part owner of the center) mentioned that we could make it bigger and get the community involved,” said employee Jocilynn Vanleer, who noted that visitors would get an opportunity to see and learn about the auction facility.

The first PA Auction Center

Summer Fest will be held on Saturday, Aug. 31, in the parking lots of the building located at 1141 Wea-Wit St., East Earl. Music, games, prizes, and giveaways will all be part of the event. All proceeds will benefit CrossNet Ministries, Garden Spot Fire Rescue, and New Holland Ambulance. In addition, attendees are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item that is not out of date to donate to the CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center. The event will open at 7 a.m.

Although Garden Spot Fire Rescue (GSFR) includes the word “rescue” in its name, not everyone might associate the volunteer company with all the types of rescues members are qualified to performed and the types of fires they can fight.

Water rescue, which Chief Darryl Keiser pointed out is mostly used in flood waters, is deployed when necessary with boats set up specifically to

navigate in waters filled with logs and debris.

“For industry (rescue), we have a lot of equipment and a focus on confined space rescue,” noted Keiser.

“Beyond standard tools, we have the ability to cut through stone and metal, added former GSFR chief of staff Nick Good.

“We have the saws for anything we should need to get through within reason.”

In addition, GSFR offers a full wild land crew to fight vegetation

his life as a veterinarian. Stoltzfus, who spent 42 years as a full-time bovine veterinarian, grew up on a 142-acre dairy farm in Oley. After graduating from Christopher Dock High School in Lansdale, he enrolled in Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Harrisonburg, Va., where he was in the pre-med program, graduating with a degree in biology. He went on to receive his veterinary degree at the University of Pennsylvania. EMU is also where he met his wife, Joyce, whom he married in 1973. Bob and Joyce have three children and seven grandchildren. In 1980, Stoltzfus partnered with Drs. Chris Barton and Bob Munson to form Lancaster Veterinary Associates. In 2002, Dr. Bridget Griffin joined

“Games (for children) are based on the auctions we do here,” explained Vanleer, who noted that a kitchen area will be set up to reflect the restaurant auctions held regularly at the venue.

“For the coin sales, we will have a dime toss game,” Vanleer noted, adding that a balloon game involving toy guns will represent the firearms auction.

From noon to 3 p.m., a dunk tank will give area residents the opportunity to dunk community leaders, including both the principal and assistant

principal from Blue Ball Elementary School and a Garden Spot Fire Rescue firefighter, along with two of the owners of the PA Auction Center.

Food truck Castañedas sells items with a Mexican flair. Midileos will sell cheesesteaks, cheeseburgers, and french fries. Both food trucks will both be on-site from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

To help raise funds, a Chinese auction will be held during the event.

“We are accepting donations from local businesses for the Chinese auction,” said Sharon Groff, a member of the PA Auction Center office staff.

Readers who would like to rent a yard sale spot or who have questions may call 717-687-7018 or email Jocilynn@paauctioncenter. com. The event will be held rain or shine. Updated information may be found by searching for “PA Auction Center” on Facebook.

Highway, Quarryville.

and wood fires.

“They know how to dig to mitigate and manage that kind of fire,” said Good.

However, rather than deploy those apparatus, fire station personnel would prefer to emphasize prevention.

GSFR member John Fisher handles the fire prevention program.

Each session will present a step-by-step DIY process that homeowners and landowners can use to repair streams that are getting deeper or wider. The techniques are meant to be simple and affordable. Penn State Extension noted that stream repair can lead to improved bank stability and reduced erosion, saving property from washing away; added property value; reduced water pollution; available habitat for many types of wildlife; and other benefits.

There is a fee, and registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/Back yardStreamRepair. A link to the recorded webinar will be emailed to registrants after the live event, and the recording will be accessible for six months from the event date.

“(Fisher) visits schools especially during Fire Prevention Month,” said Keiser.

“If there’s something you need (to know about fire prevention), either we can provide it or work with someone to get it to you,” added Good. “If we can plan ahead, we will demonstrate the apparatus,” he stated. He added that school, church, and community groups can make appointments to tour the station or have a GSFR member give a talk or hold a question-and-answer session.

GSFR also offers services to businesses located in the area.

“Stefan Kuenzli is the deputy chief who handles inspections (for businesses),” stated Good.

“He can help go through basics of sprinkler sys -

tems and a fire evacuation plan.” Good pointed out that Kuenzli can point out areas that need to be improved. “He has a checklist with recommendations he can provide,” said Good, who explained that GSFR president Tom Curtis is also knowledgeable in that area. “All those resources are there for (area businesses),” said Good.

Keiser noted that there is a misconception that GSFR is an enforcement agency. “We comply, but we are not a municipal run entity,” he noted. “At no point will you get a fine from us,” said Good, who also stated that the inspection and preplanning information will give a business information it can take to an insurer.

Marching band

Garden Spot Marching Band members practiced on the field at Garden Spot High School between

difficulty of the drill means that in addition to two Lancaster County Marching Band Coalition shows, Beasley has arranged for the group to take part in a Cavalcade circuit Freedom class noncompetitive exhibition- style show as well.

Beasley called the GSMB leadership team “phenomenal,” noting that senior Brooklynn Groff and junior Elena Zimmerman, who serve together as drum majors took part in a drum major camp at West Chester University, where they excelled. The pair referred to the show as fun and exciting, noting that the band members are embracing the challenges. “The tempo is very fast, and it changes to very slow,” noted Zimmerman.

“It’s a drastic change,” added Groff, who noted that there are more components to the drill than in the past. “We will have visuals and movements that will add expression,” said Groff, adding that some of the movements are footwork changes and steps that create a box on the field.

One traditional element of band camp is dress-up days. This year, the leadership team included

‘Merica Monday, Tacky Tourist Tuesday, and Wild West Wednesday among the activities that help draw band camp attendees together. “Getting to create a bond and making memories that will last a long time (is one goal),” noted Zimmerman.

“You make really good friendships,” added Groff, who agreed with Zimmerman that the two have become closer friends since learning they would share drum major duties.

Beasley added that because parents donate dinner, including pizza and walking tacos, during band camp, the students eat together, which gives them the chance to mingle and get to know each other better.

The rainy weather during the week of band camp did not dampen the drum majors’ spirits. Both were excited to invite audiences to see them perform at football games this fall.

“Come see the show,” said Zimmerman. “It’s an original, so (you) don’t know what to expect next. It’s very mysterious.”

Groff agreed. “Audience (members) will be on the edge of their seats,” she said.

the group. The practice is almost exclusively bovine with the workload now split between five veterinarians.

In 2022, Stoltzfus backed off from the physical demands of daily farm visits to focus on providing nutritional consulting services to nearby dairy farms, which range in size from 60 cows to 2,500 animals. The switch from full-time veterinarian to part-time consultant created a schedule with fewer daytime obligations, allowing him time write the book.

Stoltzfus noted that while “Where the Grass Grows Greener” is written for a general audience, he thinks farmers will appreciate seeing the veterinary side of farming from a veterinarian’s point of view.

In addition to personal stories about loss, the book includes stories about Stoltzfus’ trips to Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan to consult with dairy farmers in those countries. Shortly before the publica-

Borough updates sports facilities at park

New Holland Borough has announced the opening of its newly installed pickleball courts and the reconstruction of two tennis courts at Community Memorial Park. Borough manager Dick Fulcher estimated that the total cost of the project

was more than $265,000; $125,000 of these funds were provided by the state’s Commonwealth Financing Authority through the support of state Rep. Keith Greiner and state Sen. Ryan Aument. A local group of pickleball players also raised $11,200 for the project.

The borough’s Streets, Parks, Maintenance Department oversaw the project, completing many non-contract tasks. Fulcher noted that the remaining work is mostly exterior, and final landscaping will take place through the fall.

ClassONE Property Restoration will hold a “Save Our Pets” Project pet walk and fundraiser event on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. to noon at Lancaster Junction Recreation Trail in Manheim. The event will include a pet walk, vendors offering pet-related products and services, a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses, a selection of food trucks, a pet photo shoot and caricature drawings and a fire truck display.

Admission to the firsttime event is free, and people of all ages are welcome, with or without pets. Those who are participating in the pet walk must register in advance and will be asked to pay a fee per pet. Each registered pet walker will receive goodie bag that includes an event T-shirt as well as a bandana for his or her pet.

The goal of the walk is to raise funds to provide local fire departments and other emergency responders with pet oxygen mask kits, ensuring they can swiftly assist pets that are rescued from burning homes. The event will also support other pet emergency services, such as funding the Pennsylvania Animal Response Team (PART) and ClassONE’s Paw Grants. These grants help cover adoption-related fees for families looking to adopt a pet after losing their own in a fire.

To learn more and register for the walk, visit www.facebook.com/class onepropertyrestoration or www.classoneresto ration.com.
