Love Jesus? Love Children? Free On Thursdays? Cross Jr. Seeks Volunteers By Ann Mead Ash
According to Charis Pankratz, mentoring and education director with CrossNet Ministries, being a Cross Jr. volunteer has just a few simple requirements. “Mainly, volunteers should love engaging with, having fun with, and caring for students in grades three through five,” said Pankratz. “And (they should) have a heart for sharing the love of Jesus. That’s what I need (from volunteers).” Pankratz emphasized that being able to take part in rigorous activities is not a requirement. “(Volunteers) don’t have to run around and play,” she stated. “It’s being present and engaged that’s important.” Cross Jr., which is open to all thirdthrough fifth-grade students living in the ELANCO School District, will begin

Fifth Quarter 2018 Scheduled By Ann Mead Ash
Former participants in a Shoresh Study Tour of Israel rode camels in the land of Abraham. A new tour is being organized for September of 2019 by Theresa Newell of CMJ USA.
Trip Helps Deepen Biblical Understanding By Ann Mead Ash
In June 1976, Theresa Newell made her first trip to Israel. “The first day I
was there, we were taken to the Western Wall,” recalled Newell. “When I walked up to the wall to pray, God just met me there, and I said, ‘Father, I am here,’ and I heard, ‘… and you’ll be back.’” Newell, who is director of communications for CMJ USA, has now led See Israel Trip pg 7
Garden Spot High School (GSHS) students who help organize Fifth Quarter, a post-football game event held at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, see the purpose of the gathering from different perspectives. “It’s a great time. There’s free food, and the games are a lot of fun,” offered Emmarie Watson, who noted she has made new acquaintances at Fifth Quarter. “It’s a way to connect with people … or reconnect with people and talk to them about your beliefs and have them talk to you about their life and what their struggles are,” added Jake Warner. Both students are working with Joe See Fifth Quarter pg 3
Preparing for this fall’s Fifth Quarter events for youths to be held at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church after Garden Spot High School home football games are (from left) Landon Ritchie, Jake Warner, Emmarie Watson, and student ministries pastor Joe Cali. Cali, associate and student ministries pastor at Lighthouse, and GSHS graduate Landon Ritchie to organize four Fifth Quarter events that will be held at the church, 105 Earland Drive, New Holland, following home football games this fall. Fifth Quarter events will be held on Fridays, Aug. 24, Sept. 7 and 28, and Oct. 19, from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. “We are offering a clean, safe, fun environment for students to hang out,” said Cali, who added that Lighthouse will partner with other local churches and CrossNet Youth Center, directed by Carl Edwards. The GSHS Fellowship of
Christian Athletes will play a role in helping to organize the Fifth Quarter events as well. Now in its fourth season, Fifth Quarter will continue to feature a format that includes outdoor games, activities, and free food. Outdoor games will include Ultimate Frisbee, flag football, basketball, and a dunk tank. Free food will include cotton candy, walking tacos, hot dogs, and iced coffee. As in the past, there will be an emphasis on involving more community members in the events. Local police, emergency personnel, and other first responders are welcome to
attend. Watson noted that she hopes members of local law enforcement will join the students and get to know them better. “It’s a chance to talk and build positive relationships (with first responders),” she noted. Last year’s Fifth Quarter events attracted about 300 students per event. “ We were blessed with great weather last year,” said Cali. For more information, readers may contact Cali at jcali@light houseag.com or 757-390-7950. available to children in grades three through five each Thursday that school is held during the 2018-19 school year. According to Pankratz, children who wish to take part may be registered by their parents the day Cross Jr. first meets, but she prefers that parents contact her ahead of time to obtain a registration form and preregister their children. Activities that are part of the regular Cross Jr. weekly schedule include active group games where teamwork and fun are encouraged, a group snack time during which students and volunteers chat and get to know each other, and a homework/reading time, where volunteers engage one-on-one with students to assist them with homework. Pankratz said that the session closes with a Bible lesson time. “Volunteer training is on an individual basis,” explained Pankratz. “There’s less than an hour of individual training with me, and then we do an observation day.” During the observation day, a potential volunteer attends Cross Jr. to observe how the program works. After that, appropriate clearances must be obtained. Pankratz added that if a volunteer has clearances from within the last five years, he or she will not have to reapply. Pankratz prefers that Cross Jr. volunteers be older than 21, but beginning this fall, high school seniors may also participate as volunteers. Pankratz likes volunteers to be able to attend each session of Cross Jr. “I need them every week because that allows them all to get to know the children better,” she explained, adding

more than 50 trips to Israel. When she returned to the United States after her first trip, she began learning Hebrew. “That was a big adventure,” she noted. Her ability to use the language will be employed again, when Newell leads a group to Israel from Sunday, Sept. 8, to Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Using the Shoresh Study Tours program, the group will travel to the coast, desert, and mountains, stopping at places where biblical events are believed to have occurred to help the travelers dig deeper into the Scriptures. The tour will include both Old and New Testament sites and information about the history of modern Israel. The focus of the study during the trip is on Christ and a better understanding of His ministry. Newell’s second trip to Israel occurred in 1979, when she was asked to take a group of students from a Christian school back to Israel. She stayed for a month teaching students, and when she returned, others began asking her to take them to Israel. “Every year I began taking people back,” said Newell, who added that in the 1980s, she realized that study programs for Israel visitors were sparse. “There was some formal (education), but for people going for just a few weeks, the content was lacking,” she noted. Around that same time, Newell was introduced to the international director of CMJ, which stands for Church’s Ministry Among Jewish People. The ministry was founded in 1809 in London. Newell was asked to open an American office in Fairfax, Va. She and other members of the ministry began asking the question “How do we get more biblical content into a travel program for laypeople?” “(We wanted) a program for people who wanted to deepen their relationship with Jesus and understand the relationship between Old and New Testament and understand Jesus in the Second Temple period,” explained Newell. “That’s how we came to develop the Shoresh program.” Newell explained that “Shoresh” is Hebrew for “root.” “(It’s a study program about) the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and seeing Jesus in His timeframe and understanding that as we walk the land,” said Newell. She uses her knowledge of Hebrew to bring out the nuances in the Bible and bring deeper meaning to the text. “I use Hebrew to help people understand, (because) when we hear what the people in (Jesus’) day heard, it helps us to be better disciples. A clearer understanding of the Bible is what Shoresh is all about.” After leading so many tours of Israel, Newell noted that she has been struck by both the differences and similarities between bands of participants. “Each group is unique, and each bonds in a wonderful way,” she said. “They all come back saying they are surprised by how much (more) information (they now have about) the Bible they have been studying all these years, and that tells me we are achieving what we set out to do … to help people see Jesus more clearly and understand the Bible more clearly.” Before moving to New Holland, Newell was on staff at the Trinity School for Ministry in Pittsburgh, where she earned master’s and doctoral ministry degrees. While on staff at the school, she created the Israel travel study program. Readers who would like to learn more about the September 2019 trip to Israel may email theresa@cmj-usa.org or call 412-680-6843. More information about Shoresh may be found at https://shoresh.mvti.net/camp-2019 or by searching for “Shoresh Tours” on www.youtube.com.

Labor Day Auction from pg 1
Children’s Programming from pg 1 Julia Connolly, executive director of Hands-on House, has great appreciation for the beauty of the challenging course that Hands-on House Half Marathon runners enjoy. While the half marathon is known for its challenging hills, Connolly delights in the bucolic scenery the run offers. “It’s a beautiful course with farms, trees, and a covered bridge,” she said. “It truly captures Lancaster’s character.” The 15th annual Hands-on House Half Marathon, which also offers 10K and 5K courses, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 8 a.m. All three runs will begin and end at Hands-on House, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The 10K utilizes part of the half-marathon course, and the 5K winds through a local neighborhood. Strollers are permitted in the 5 and 10K runs, but pets are not allowed for safety reasons. Connolly noted that water stops and comfort stations will be available along the routes and that bagels and apples will be offered to runners at the end of the race. Each run will have its own start, and all runners will be chip-timed. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female half-marathon runners, and all half-marathoners will receive medals. Prizes will also be given to the top three males and females in a number of age
groups for the half marathon and to the top five males and females for the 5K and 10K courses. According to Connolly, race organizers have set a goal of attracting 800 to 1,000 participants this year. At its peak, more than 1,000 runners took part in the event. Registration opened earlier this year to give more runners a chance to sign up. Runners may register at www.handsonhouse.org/run/ or by searching for “Hands-on House Half Marathon, 10K & 5K 2018” at www.active.com. Halfmarathon runners must register prior to race day, and online registration will end on Thursday, Sept. 27. Those wishing to participate in the 5K or 10K races may register ahead of time or on the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m. Packet pickup will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Hands-on House and from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the race. Free long-sleeved tech shirts are guaranteed for runners who preregister for the events. While the Hands-on House race courses spotlight the hallmarks of Lancaster County scenery, the event also offers a unique opportunity for children and nonrunners to enjoy the museum during the race. “The museum will open at 8 a.m., and runners receive coupons for children,” said Connolly, who explained that

The coupons give a spouse, grandparent, or family friend a chance to enjoy the museum with a child or children while one or both parents run the course. Funds raised by the races will benefit educational programming and exhibits of Hands-on House, a museum for children that first opened in 1987 in a Victorian house located across the street from its present location. In February of 2000, the museum moved to 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, and just about doubled its floor space. Hands-on House is a nonprofit organization that exists to use play to create landmark experiences for children ages 2 to 10. Readers who would like to learn more about Hands-on House may visit www.handsonhouse.org. Pictured on front: Runners who take part in the Hands-on House Half Marathon will traverse a scenic portion of the Lancaster County countryside on Sept. 29. The event will also offer 10K and 5K routes and will raise funds for educational programming at the children’s museum.
