Fairmount Schedules Online Auction And Drive-Through Barbecue Annual Fundraiser Changes Locations By Ann Mead Ash
Dorothy Witmer, one of the principal organizers of the annual Fairmount Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue, is saddened that Fairmount residents will not be enjoying this year’s event as they have in the past. “One of the special struggles is that this has always been a day of celebration for the residents,” said Witmer. “It started out being a special day for them and for families to be with them, and now it is going on without them.” For the safety of Fairmount residents and attendees at the annual event, organizers have moved the 31st

suspended until January, board members stepped outside the box to make sure the program could still be offered to local children. “It will look very different this time, but there are glimmers of hope,” said Reimers. “We can have the lessons online.” Reimers admitted that the fall semester program will put more responsibility on the parents, but she is pleased that every child who wants to participate will have access to the lessons. As in the past, the ELANCO program will use a two-year sequential curriculum that begins with the establishment of

The Bird-in-Hand Stage, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand, has several years of presenting live entertainment, including local performers interspersed with original Blue Gate Musicals shows focused on the Plain community. Starting in 2016, Brett and Labrina Myers provided shows for Birdin-Hand before preparing to open their own Magic and Wonder Theater, 3065 Lincoln Highway, Paradise. however, neither theater opened in April, but Magic and Wonder opened on July 20, and Bird-inHand is holding two shows starting in August. To open in accordance with green phase regulations, theaters may be at 50% capacity. “We can seat about 175 people (under green), but we will probably do less than that,” said Terry Buda Moser, director of marketing with Bird-in-Hand. “We will keep (attendees with their own households) and seat them six feet apart,” she added, noting that hand sanitizer will be available and masks will be required when patrons are not seated. Cleaning protocols will be followed between shows with high-touch areas sanitized. At Magic and Wonder, tables are placed six feet apart and masks must be worn while in common areas. Sanitizing occurs before, during, and after each show, and all employees undergo
a temperature check and answer five Centers for Disease Control and Prevention questions before being allowed to work. Although the building will hold 500 people, the venue is currently only accommodating 125 guests at a time. Bird-in-Hand opened with local favorite Ryan and Friends presenting a show called “Comedy and Calamity.” “It’s a very family-friendly show with ventriloquism and comedy,” said Buda Moser, who noted that Ryan and his five puppet friends made their debut on the Bird-inHand stage with this presentation. “We were looking for a family option with comedy that would appeal to a variety of audiences,” added Buda Moser. Ryan and friends opened Aug. 8, with shows running through Saturday, Oct. 17. “The GÜT Life,” starring Nathan Garner as Simon Yoder and Monica DePaul as his wife,

Eliza, will run from Thursday, Aug. 27, through Friday, Oct. 23. Buda Moser explained that the show focuses on an Amish couple in their mid-40s looking back over 20 years of marriage. The 90-minute show tells stories from their lives growing up on farms and then veering off when Eliza left the Plain community for a time before returning. “There are some interesting stories there,” said Buda Moser, who called the interactive show “heartfelt, heartwarming, and funny.” To learn more about the offerings at the Bird-in-Hand Stage, visit https://bird-in-hand.com/ stage or call 800-790-4069. Brett and Labrina were recently married and traveling the country doing magic shows when they first envisioned a theater. “We were just back from a tour in Texas,” recalled Brett of the late-night walk he and his wife took outside their Lancaster farmhouse. “We saw thousands of fireflies decorating the night sky, and we experienced a moment of wonder that takes your breath away,” he recalled. “We knew we wanted to create a show that wasn’t about tricking or fooling, (but) about sparking creativity and wonder in all of us.” The result is a team effort that Brett says fuses grand illusions, comedy, and dynamic circus arts, including the Cyr wheel and an aerial performance by Labrina. “I designed this for people of all ages,” Brett said of the familyfriendly show that includes levitation, an appearance by Brett and Labrina’s children, and making a likeness of the Statue of Liberty appear. 3:15 p.m. Released Time is open to students in third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Official registration will not be held until the program is able to officially restart, hopefully in January 2021, but Reimers said that a flyer was to be sent home to parents following the first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 25. “That flyer will tell (parents) if (their child wants) to participate, they have to email me, so I can make them part of the mass email to receive the links to the lessons,” explained Reimers. “Worksheets and verse cards can be sent electronically or by hard copy, whichever the parents prefer,” noted Reimers. Videos will follow the same format as in-person lessons and have the same volunteer teachers. “(The teachers) will pray first and then give a lesson,” said Reimers. “We are hoping to get some songs in there. We normally put memory verses (in a) song (format), and the kids learn them.” Reimers said the first lesson will be available Thursday, Sept. 10. Lessons may be watched via YouTube or by searching for “ELANCO Released Time - New Holland Released Time” on Facebook. Past programs have given participating students the opportunity to earn points toward a
week at summer camp. Last year, 17 students attended one of two camps - either Woodcrest Retreat in Ephrata or Greenview Bible Camp in Denver. Students earned points each week by bringing their Bibles to Released Time and memorizing and looking up Bible verses. Camp winners were selected by a drawing held at the end of the school year. This year, due to the online format, the points program will be suspended until the official start of Released Time in 2021. In addition to the chance to attend camp, sixth-grade students who take part in the Released Time program have attended a production at Sight & Sound Theatres in the spring. Reimers is currently in touch with Sight & Sound in hopes of sending students who would have completed the program last spring and are now seventhgraders to a current production. When Released Time is held live, the final 20 minutes are reserved for students to meet in small groups with an adult to listen, answer questions about the lesson, and help with worksheets. Reimers noted that a few adult volunteers plan to meet with students electronically every two weeks, but more volunteers who are able to do that are needed. Adults who would like to volunteer may call 717-283-8921 or email drjr145@yahoo.com.

gorgeous city,” said Drew, who described the area as touristy filled with high-rise hotels and apartments. “They were known for their food, like a little Paris,” he said. In the afternoon on Aug. 4, two explosions rocked the port area of the city. Nearly 200 people died, and more than 6,000 were injured. As much as $15 billion in property damage left 300,000 homeless. When the explosion happened, Drew was on the phone with Charbel, a ministry partner he had met when he was in Beirut in March. “(Charbel) was scared for his family,” recalled Drew, who said that once Charbel found his family and knew they were safe, he turned to another mission. “He decided to go to where the explosion happened to help people,” said Drew. “That is where he has been daily.” According to Drew, Charbel has formed a team that takes shovels and brooms daily and asks where they can help clean up the disaster area. “They go

make disciples,” said Drew. “The work became less dependent on Drew and Cindy to do the healing work with the children (and) more about us training others.” “ We were helping train nationals to be excellent at working with children,” said Drew, who was in Beirut from March 1 through 7 at the invitation of the Lebanon Bible Society for an intense training session with children’s trauma workers from around the region. The workshops in play and art therapy ran eight hours daily for four days. On his flight back to Guatemala, which took him by way of England and Texas, Drew became concerned that countries were shutting down. “Even within a country, travel shut down,” he recalled, noting that his family’s missionary lifestyle required a lot of traveling. “We suddenly had a major change,” said Drew. “The Lord was revealing a new thing. We were moving to a new model of training.” Since March, the Metcalf family has returned to Lancaster County. Drew and Cindy have written a training manual curriculum, and they are now providing online video training sessions of up to 90 minutes once or twice a week. “It takes about a month and a half to finish the training,” said Drew. “If there’s a close fit, we invite the people we train to be on our team.” To be part of We Help Children, the partners must be excellent with children, have the gift of training others, and be followers of Jesus. Partners work with families in crisis areas with the support of the ministry. “They are training parents and helping children heal from trauma,” explained Drew, who added that a partner may take school supplies, food, or other emergency supplies to the area. To specifically aid Charbel and his team in Lebanon, We Help Children has set up a button on the organization’s home page at www.wehelpchildren.org. Drew noted that 100% of donations for Lebanon will go to help Charbel’s team. Readers who have questions may call 717-471-9790.

Wissler Road, Lititz (just off Route 322 West between Ephrata and Clay). Chicken sales at both locations will be held from 10 a.m. until the chicken is sold out. The chicken barbecue meal will include a leg and thigh, a roll, cheesy potatoes, applesauce, a whoopie pie, and a beverage. An option to purchase two additional leg and thigh pieces will be offered. All funds raised by the event will benefit the Sharing Fund, which provides $2.5 million in uncompensated care for residents annually. Passage noted that 2020 has been a difficult year for Fairmount. “It has been a struggle for our staff to care for our residents, emotionally and spiritually, he said. “Our residents have been gracious, strong, and supportive, he said. “We moved to New Covenant to keep as many people as safe as possible, not only our residents, but also the community. Passage said he hopes area residents will support the event. “We can only do what we can do because we are hand in hand with the community, he said. “If people feel led to bid or come to the preview, we welcome that.

The Giant Company introduced a new reusable bag program on July 16. The program is designed to provide additional support to community partners focused on eliminating hunger, changing children’s lives and healing the planet. The bags will rotate seasonally, with a portion of the proceeds going to the corresponding nonprofit partner. The first bag, in stores now, benefits eight local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in the communities where the company has a presence: The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey; Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville; Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.; University of Virginia Children’s Hospital in Charlottesville, Va.; WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va.; Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Md.; and Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital. The Lititz Chocolate Walk, which was scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, has been canceled due to ongoing concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Next year’s walk is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, 2021. This cancellation, along with the cancellation of the Lititz Pretzel Fest earlier this year, has left an $80,000 funding shortfall for the local youth charities and organizations that the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area supports. Through the support of the community, the club has raised more than $800,000 in the past 25 years to help support local children. To learn more about the Kiwanis Club of Lititz Area and the organizations it supports, or to donate, readers may visit www.lititzkiwanis.com. All donations go to local children’s charities.

On July 29, the board of directors of Bank of Bird-in-Hand declared a special cash dividend of 20 cents per share to shareholders of record as of Aug. 14. It will be payable on Tuesday, Sept. 8. “Our financial performance since our founding in December of 2013 has provided us the opportunity to declare the special cash dividend,” stated Lori A. Maley, president and chief executive officer. “This dividend is a reward to our loyal shareholders based upon the continued growth and profitability of the bank that reinforces our goal of creating long-term shareholder value through responsible capital allocation.” She added that the special cash dividend would not be possible without the support of the shareholders, the employees and the board of directors. Bank of Bird-in-Hand is a community-owned bank serving eastern Lancaster County and western Chester County with a strong focus on agricultural, small business and consumer lending. Its main branch and office are located at 309 N. Ronks Road, Bird-inHand. It operates additional branches at 3540 Old Philadelphia Pike, Intercourse, and 3314 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise. The bank also operates a mobile branch, which has a schedule of hours of operation at nine locations in Lancaster County. The bank plans to launch two additional mobile bank units during September.

Watershed Stewards Offer Tree Sale The Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program is accepting orders for native trees and shrubs through Monday, Aug. 31. The sale, which serves as a fundraiser for the program, offers 26 varieties of trees and shrubs that can be picked up from Friday, Sept. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 10. Pickup dates are tentative, will vary by location, and will be confirmed at a later date. The sale will include trees for privacy, foliage, shade, attracting pollinators or to decorate. So You Want To Start A Blog By Dayna M. Reidenouer
With unemployment in the double digits nationally and with limits on how much socialization can be done in person, starting a blog might seem like an ideal solution. Bloggers can earn an income while interacting with people outside their own households from the safety of their homes. However, there is more to becoming a successful blogger than just opening a WordPress account. It is easy to start a blog, but it can be challenging to keep it going. “I stay motivated because I picked a topic that is just our life. It’s something that I’m very interested in, said Ephrata resident Kathy McClure, who launched the Frugal Lancaster blog in 2010. “Don’t start a blog on something new to you. Choose something that you’re already doing and interested in. McClure began blogging as a way to share with others how she and her husband saved money while raising children. Initially, the blog focused on how to use coupons effectively. It also featured a part-discount, part-referral deal program, and McClure estimated that her family saved more than $1,000 on dining and entertainment thanks to the program that first year. As the family grew and ways to save money changed from coupons to gas points, the blog also shifted. “I just share about things I use and do myself, McClure said. “Most of the time, it’s just, we’re living life, and I share it. During the last few months,
Kathy McClure McClure has seen people starting blogs on current hot topics such as homesteading and homeschooling. “Look at your gifts and your interests. Look at what people are asking you about and go from there. Be creative. Try it and see what works. Some people start channels for their pets, she said. “If it brings you joy, (consider it for a blog). We’re in a time where we need things that bring us joy. There are multiple ways to earn an income through a blog. Traditionally, these have included advertisements placed on a page as well as sponsored posts in which businesses pay bloggers to write about products or events. Now, there are services like Patreon through which bloggers may offer special access to posts on Instagram or subscriptions so readers will not see ads on their blogs.
respond, and yet other times she engages. Each instance has to be handled on a case-by-case basis, she noted. When McClure began blogging in 2010, she used her degree in new media technology from Rochester Institute of Technology to build her own website. Now, there are many services available to help bloggers manage their posts. In addition to WordPress, McClure listed Buffer and Later for scheduling Facebook and Instagram posts, respectively; MailerLite and ConvertKit for email marketing; E-junkie for file downloads; and Tailwind for managing Pinterest. McClure also recommended connecting with other bloggers and is herself a member of a Facebook group for Lancaster County bloggers. Thanks to work she put into the blog in the early years when her children were little, McClure now needs to spend only about five hours a week on it. Ultimately, patience, persistence, and dedication are key to running a successful blog. “Don’t expect the money right away, McClure advised. “You’re doing it to share whatever you know, your knowledge. You’re doing it to connect with people.
Running an Instagram account, along with having an active Facebook page or group, has become crucial for earning an income from blogging. McClure spends as much time on Facebook and Instagram posts as she does on blog posts, and she uses her blog as a content resource center where she creates posts that she shares on social media. “I think I’ve become more of an influencer than a blogger, she said. “It’s a lot of Instagram stories and posts that people connect with. Posting to social media is relatively simple because images, not text, are the focus, but McClure expressed a bias toward having a blog as a backup. “If Instagram goes down, you still have all your stuff (on your blog), she explained. “The email list (of your subscribers) is yours. Internet trolls - people who post comments designed to cause upset or derail conversations are an unfortunate reality of the blogosphere. The majority of feedback on McClure’s posts has been positive, but when the occasional troll pops up, McClure simply deletes the comment. Other times she allows the comment to remain but does not

On June 11, Sue Esh of Gordonville was trying to take a nap, but her phone kept beeping. The beeping was alerting Esh to a text from her sister who lives in Tennessee. “She was texting and saying I needed to do something for the Lancaster police,” recalled Esh, whose sister was reacting to a Facebook post from leadership at the Lancaster City Bureau of Police. Esh reposted the item, asking others what could be done to support local officers. “A friend messaged me about a nephew who graduated. (She said that) the school held an adopt-a-graduate program and (she told me) how meaningful that was,” reported Esh. The friend, Verna Fisher, asked if something similar could be done for the police, adding that if Esh would organize the program, she would help. Through friends, Esh was able to connect with Lancaster Chief of Police Jarrad Berkihiser. On June 15,

Esh received permission to organize Adopt A Cop in order to support 133 Lancaster police department officers. Using a Facebook event page, Esh put the word out to family and friends. Within 48 hours, all 133 officers were adopted. About a week later, a volunteer with Adopt A Cop was looking for gift cards to give to the officers. When the volunteer posted on a group page that both Esh and Tina Edgell belong to, Edgell took notice and messaged Esh. With Esh’s guidance, Edgell set up Adopt A Cop programs for East Lampeter Township and West Earl’s finest. All the officers were adopted the same day Edgell asked for volunteer families, June 22. The date was especially important because it was the day after Linda Stoltzfoos disappeared and members of the East Lampeter Police Department began working 12- to 16hour shifts. Drawing from the adopting families, she was able to arrange nightly meals for the department for the rest of that week. See Adopt A Cop pg 13

Esh and Edgell both asked families to take certain actions to support officers. “I stress praying for them as the No. 1 thing and then cards of encouragement,” said Edgell, noting that often when families make a snack for their officer, they decide to bring enough for all the police department members to enjoy. Gift cards and movie baskets are another way to offer support. Friends of Esh’s have taken it upon themselves to set up similar programs for the East Earl and New Holland departments. Adoptive families are allowed to share their email address with their officer, but it is up to the officer to initiate contact. Esh said that often families take items to the police station, and she shared the story of a woman who went to a station to drop off a gift card. When she named the officer it was to be given to, the sergeant standing nearby identified himself as that officer. On July 18, Esh took food to the Lancaster station as part of a large support effort held that day, and she had the opportunity to meet the officer she adopted. “He was so thankful,” Esh recalled. “He said, ‘I mean it when I say that the words of encouragement mean as much as the gifts,’” she said. Esh cited COVID-19 restrictions as part of her inspiration for

reaching out to local first responders. “Since I was 16, I planned to take cookies to the police officers,” she said. “I thought it would be so much fun, and I never did it.” During the quarantine, she was stuck at home, so she made cookies and a cheese platter for the officers at the East Lampeter station and the state police barracks on Lincoln Highway. She has more plans to find ways to support the Lancaster officers in the future. Edgell noted that the effort has been uplifting for her during the restrictive phases of the last several months. “This has been the best thing during COVID,” she said, adding that some texts and emails she has received from grateful officers have brought her to tears. “I forward them to (the adoptive) families,” she said.

Through a Lancaster Cares grant, LOHF has broadened eligibility for its free Mental Health Copay Assistance program to include not just people birth to age 25 and those with dependent children, but any county resident whose income is impacted by COVID-19. LOHF has also collaborated with Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC) to include LOHF’s copay program in MHALC’s bundle of free mental health services. Participants in LOHF’s Mental Health Copay Assistance program pay only a set fee for each appointment with the licensed mental healthcare professional of their choice, such as a therapist or psychiatrist. Prior to the pandemic, eligibility was limited to persons with financial need who are birth to age 25 or the parent of a dependent child ages 0 to 25 and live in the county. This is now expanded to include any county resident impacted financially by COVID-19, regardless of age or parental status. The LOHF Mental Health Copay Assistance program complements MHALC’s bundle of free services to the community during COVID-19. MHALC’s other services in the
bundle are community mental health assistance, medication assistance, and virtual mental health support groups. Community mental health assistance offers services for residents in Lancaster County who do not currently have access to an employee assistance program or for those whose employment was affected by COVID-19. This free program includes an assessment, shortterm counseling by a licensed mental health professional, and follow up resources. This program is supported by a grant from the Steinman Foundation. Medication assistance provides financial assistance for adults and children in Lancaster County who are unable to afford medication during the pandemic, with limited restrictions. This program is supported by a grant from Lancaster Cares. Virtual mental health support groups are peer-led groups that meet weekly by Zoom or phone for support, education, and mentoring. The groups are free, confidential, and ongoing. For more information or to apply online for mental health services, readers may visit www.lohf.org/copay.
