New Holland Summer Arts Program (NHSAP) secretary/treasurer Sue Noll recently mused on the success of the summer of 2018 program, which brought a number of returning and new musical acts to the New Holland Area Community Park on East Jackson Street on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. “We have had good attendance,” noted Noll. “The summer shows average (attendance of) 300, and for the Servant Stage (performance of ‘I’ll Fly Away’), we estimated 1,500 (attended).” NHSAP can celebrate the success of the summer with the traditional full day of fiddlin’ on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3, when the annual Fiddler’s Picnic will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Live music will begin at 11 a.m. Fiddlers are encouraged to arrive early to reserve a See Fiddler’s Picnic pg 3

Giving Back To The Community LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer

Volunteers with the New Holland Summer Arts Program display the quilt that will be given away at the annual Fiddler’s Picnic on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3. For many years, a local shop has donated a quilt for the giveaway, but this will be the last year because the shop is scheduled to close.

Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster See Volunteers pg 6

David Kim Performance CSF Fundraiser Scheduled To Benefit “Messiah” Sing-Along When Amber Pavalko of Stevens By Ann Mead Ash

By Ann Mead Ash

When violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” Sing-Along which has been held each spring and winter in Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the audience sing along too. The Lancaster County Sing-Along

David Kim has been held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. The Chester County presentation has been held at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. The next Chester County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, Dec. 28, See David Kim pg 3

Pavalko has been fighting Chiari malformation, a syndrome that is associated with a variety of other physical problems, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and syringomyelia since 2013. “I saw that there wasn’t (a fundraising event for CSF) here, so I wanted to do that,” said Pavalko. “That was before I needed four surgeries.” Pavalko has emerged from those surgeries feeling better than she had in years, allowing her more energy to plan the unite@night Lancaster CSF Walk for 2018, set for Friday, Sept. 21, at the Kiwanis Pavilion at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Lancaster. Activities will begin at 6 p.m., and the walk will begin at 7:30 p.m. See CSF Fundraiser pg 8

Main St., Leola, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The War Memorial Building may be found along Route 23 about 6 miles north of Route 30. The event was formerly held at Boettcher House

Food items to sample have become a traditional part of Herb Fest. Dagen noted that peach, strawberry, and blueberry jams and jams made with lavender will be at the fest, along with baked goods featuring herbal flavors. A Mediterranean sea salt blend will also be offered. According to Dagen, toilet fizzies are a new feature for 2018. “You throw it in the toilet and let it fizz and then brush it out,” she said of the lavender-citrus seasoned blend, which is septic tank safe. “It’s herbal, rather than chemical,” she added. According to the International Herb Association, the 2018 herb of the year is hops. Dagen said that the herb will be spotlighted at the fest to educate visitors. The guild uses the funds raised by the event to purchase books on the subject of herbs to donate to local libraries and to help other

A Christmas Corner, a live plant area, and food samples will all be part of this year’s event. Additional displays will include lavender crafts, herbal soaps, plant markers, flower pots, birdhouses, garden décor, and cat and dog treats. According to Dagen, items that will be new this year will include wooden pumpkins as well as lip balms and salves made with calendula, comfrey, and plantain. Personal care items such as orange peppermint body scrub and lavender body scrub will be on display, along with seed packets, fresh plants, and bunched herbs.

Fiddler’s Picnic from pg 1 slot on the park stage. The performance schedule allows a 30-minute spot for a group and 15 minutes for a single act or a duo. Usually up to 15 acts perform each year, and the picnic is often a place for musicians to join up to make music together. Musicians who are considering playing on stage together will sometimes gather in spots far from the stage to practice and often draw a crowd to their own little mini concert. In addition to string players, individuals who play accordion, harmonica, and keyboard may visit the park to join in on well-known favorites such as “Rocky Top, “Foggy Mountain Breakdown, “Orange Blossom Special, and “Golden Slippers. Organizers plan to have a square dance caller on-site for this year’s event. Country and bluegrass tunes are

staples of the event, according to Noll. The picnic portion of the event is supplied by the New Holland Lions Club, which brings its food trailer and offers items for purchase, including hot ham sandwiches, barbecued chicken, chicken corn soup, hot dogs with chili or sauerkraut, side dishes, various desserts, cold beverages, and coffee. Members of the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) marching band will help the Lions in the trailer. In return, the Lions will make a donation to the GSHS Marching Band Booster Club. A queen-size quilt, donated by Witmer’s Quilt Shop, will be on display. This will be the last year that the shop will donate a quilt because the enterprise is closing. Noll expressed gratitude to the owner for donating a quilt each year for

many years in support of NHSAP. The donated quilt for this year bears an Indian Wedding Ring pattern and was created in shades of brown and teal. It will be given away around 6:30 p.m., according to Noll. NHSAP is an all-volunteer organization that has existed in New Holland for more than three decades. “We can always take more volunteers, said Noll, who noted that help is needed with setting up prior to concerts and clearing the park afterwards. Volunteers to accept freewill offerings during intermission are also needed. No admission will be charged for the Fiddler’s Picnic, but freewill offerings will be received throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Readers who would like more information about the Fiddler’s Picnic or the Summer Arts Program may visit www.newhollandsummer arts.com, search for “New Holland Summer Arts Association on Facebook, or email newhollandsummerartsassoc@gmail.com.

David Kim from pg 1 and the next Lancaster County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019. Kim, who was named concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999, has been playing the violin since age 3. He began studying under Dorothy DeLay at the age of 8, and he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. He recently appeared as concertmaster of the AllStar Orchestra on the Public Broadcasting System, at the Brahms Festival, and with the Fairbanks Symphony in Alaska. He is soloist each season with the Philadelphia Orchestra. As a teacher, Kim is founder and artistic director of

the annual David Kim Orchestral Institute of Cairn University of Philadelphia. He also serves as professor of violin studies at Cairn. Kim lives near Philadelphia. Readers may learn more about him at www.davidkimviolin.com. About a year ago, Leaman was discussing the future of the sing-along with supporter JM Herr. “As we move forward, we will (need a legacy), explained Leaman. “(Herr) is friends with David Kim, said Leaman. Herr offered to ask Kim to perform a benefit concert for the sing-along. “Kim said he would love to do it, said Leaman. Among the selections Kim will

perform at the Sept. 18 concert will be “Soli Deo Gloria and Massenet’s “Meditation from “Thais, which is Kim’s signature piece. His selections will also include “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, “Banjo and Fiddle, and “Carmen Fantasy. Tickets to Kim’s concert are available at http://messiahsingalong.com, and purchasers may select seats from those available. Seats in the balcony will be sold at a discount, and discounts will be offered for senior citizens, military personnel, and students. Any tickets remaining on the day of the concert will be available at the door.

As organizer of the COBYS Bike and Hike, Don Fitzkee, director of development for COBYS Family Services, was thoughtful about the ultimate goal of the light-hearted event. “This year it is more important than ever that we have a successful event because the needs COBYS meets are growing,” said Fitzkee. “Specifically our foster care and adoption care programs are growing rapidly with (the need for these) partly fueled by the opioid epidemic.” In response to the need, COBYS has recently purchased a new building, called Murray Hill Center. The organization finalized 31 adoptions in the last year, hitting a milestone in May with 500 adoptions finalized over a 20-year time period. In addition, during the past year, COBYS

added 24 new families to provide foster care, bringing the total to 116 families that have been trained and approved to care for children. However, the need is still outpacing resources. The 22nd annual Bike and Hike will be held at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Sunday, Sept. 9. The Bike and Hike is so named because it includes a variety of activities centered on biking - both on bicycles and on motorcycles - and walking. The fundraiser includes a 3-mile walk, 10- and 25-mile bicycle rides, and a 65-mile motorcycle ride dubbed the “Dutch Country Motorcycle Ride.” Those who participate may choose which event they wish to take part in and then donate a registration fee or raise money from sponsors. They may also utilize both strategies to help raise funds. Prizes will be offered to participants who raise specific amounts, and junior and senior high church youth groups that raise $1,500 or more may earn a gym and pizza night.

County Fire Chiefs Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service. “Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors,” Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster

driver only and help them get out during daytime calls,” explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works full-time as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you arrive on the scene, and try to calm the situation at hand,” shared Breneman. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer,” Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood,” Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family.” To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities,” said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with administrative functions, to serve as fire police to direct traffic, and to assist with exterior firefighting work. No special skillset is required, as training will be provided. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a

County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. The videos may be viewed by searching for “Lancaster County Volunteer Recruitment” at www.youtube.com. Hagelgans said that the LCFCA has seen an uptick in volunteer inquiries since the videos were released but is still well below the number of volunteers needed. The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a

Looking back on the opening of The Trust Performing Arts Center, located at 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, five years ago, executive director Robert Bigley admitted that the new venture held some surprises. “We didn’t really know what we were getting into, he said, adding that the opportunity to start a downtown performing arts center has had many positive results. “We are honored to have been a part of the arts renaissance in Lancaster this past decade, Bigley stated That delight is exhibited in the lineup that has been chosen to celebrate The Trust’s fifth anniversary. “We are pulling out all the stops, announced Bigley. Returning artists who will perform will include the Donald Sinta Quartet, Daniel Hsu, New York Polyphony, and Christopher Shih and Friends. The King’s Singers, a group celebrating its 50th anniversary, will perform at The Trust for the first time. All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Sept. 7, The Trust will hold its seasonal launch party, where a showcase of local choreographers will present their works in competition. “The AY/dancers will choose one of those (works) to present (at The Trust), explained Bigley. A-Y/dancers will perform on Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Durang Dance Collective Presentations at the venue. A-Y/dancers will perform three pieces by world-renowned choreographers and one by the winner of the local competition. Bigley noted that the Donald Sinta Quartet, made up of four saxophonists who play transcriptions of classical music, crossover songs, and some fun pieces, will open the season on Thursday, Oct. 4. “They played at The Trust in our first season, recalled Bigley. “They had just won (gold) at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, which is the most important chamber music competition in America. Bigley added that the acoustics of The Trust are well suited to the group’s sound.

Pictured on front: The King’s Singers, a group of well-known, London-based singers, will perform at The Trust Performing Arts Center in Lancaster on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5, as part of The Trust’s fifth anniversary year celebration.

By Ann Mead Ash

Bigley was also excited to announce that The Kings’s Singers will perform at The Trust on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Bigley noted that the London-based group is the “most famous vocal ensemble in the world. Pianist Daniel Hsu was only a teenager when he first played at The Trust during the venue’s third season. “He had just won the Concert Artists Guild award (when he performed here before), and in 2017, he won bronze in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, said Bigley, who added that Hsu will be just 21 when he appears at The Trust on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019. New York Polyphony, a four-man Grammy-nominated classical a capella group, will return to The Trust for the third time on Sunday, Feb. 17, and Monday, Feb. 18, 2019. Christopher Shih, a local physician and pianist, has invited his friend and worldclass cellist Wendy Warner, along with a few others, to perform with him on Thursday, May 2, 2019. In addition, The Trust will host four dramatic presentations, including the classic comedy “The Man Who Came to Dinner at 7:30 p.m. on the evenings of Oct. 25 to 27 and Nov. 1 to 3 and at 2 p.m. on Oct. 27 and 28 and Nov. 3. A 45-minute production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe will be presented at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays from Dec. 1 to 22, with an additional 11 a.m. performance on Nov. 24. On Friday, Feb. 8, and Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, the one-man show “Bonhoeffer in Prison will be presented. “Freud’s Last Session, will be presented on Friday, March 29, at 7:30p.m.; Saturday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 31, at 2 p.m. The play, which imagines a series of meetings between Sigmund Freud and C. S. Lewis, will be staged in the mahoganypaneled board room with a fireplace. Limited tickets will be available for this theater-in-the-round experience. More information about programming may be found at www.lancastertrust.com. Tickets to concerts and other Trust presentations may be purchased on the website or by calling 717-208-7835.

Chiari is generally a congenital condition in which the size of the back of the skull crowds neurological tissues. In this condition, the cerebellum can interfere with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to flow into the spinal canal. Syringomyelia occurs when a syrinx, caused by a buildup of spinal fluid, forms in the spinal cord. This condition can stretch and damage nerve fibers. EDS is a connective tissue disorder caused by genetic changes in the tissues that stabilize and support joints and organs. The unite@night events are designed to provide education about Chiari and related

syndromes while raising funds for research to aid those who are afflicted. Pavalko hopes to raise $5,000 with this year’s event. Pavalko has had 11 neurosurgeries, along with a number of other procedures and hospitalizations, since first being diagnosed. She said that she is now feeling the best she has been since she began experiencing symptoms after giving birth to her daughter, Addie, in 2013. “I have two shunts now,” said Pavalko, who added that the unusual system was installed by Dr. Kenneth Liu, a vascular neurosurgeon now based at Hershey. The shunt system has greatly reduced the intracranial hypertension caused by having too much spinal fluid. Before Liu operated, Pavalko was experiencing a number of symptoms, including a continual headache from the pressure of the fluid. “My leg was still dragging, and my hand was shaking before I had those four surgeries,” explained Pavalko. “I couldn’t see

well enough to not crash into a wall, (but) now I can see again, and I can drive short distances.” Pavalko said that she is thankful for doctors like Liu who are willing to use creativity and try new technologies to treat conditions such as Chiari, EDS, and related problems. “I wouldn’t be living my life with my daughter right now if he didn’t take chances on people like me who are atypical,” she said. “That’s what I am grateful for. That’s what gives me hope.” Pavalko is a trained drug rehabilitation counselor, but she has not worked in her chosen field for some time. A year ago, she became involved in launching Celebrate Recovery, a cooperative effort between several New Holland churches and organizations. Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted Ames. “It used to be called the Dream Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Bike Millersville will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, Millersville University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will open for packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., and the ride will start at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. The ride will be held rain or shine, but delays may be made in the case of fog or other hazardous conditions. The ride will feature 5-, 20-, and 30-mile cycling tours and 1-, 2-, and 6.5-mile walking tours throughout the greater Millersville area. Rest stops featuring fruit, water, and snack foods will be located along the routes.

The stops will also offer bike support. “There are a number of area bike shops that have partnered with (volunteers from) each of the nonprofits to sponsor the rest stops,” explained Ames. The organizations that have partnered to present this year’s ride include NLAM, which is an organization that offers mobile psychiatric rehabilitation services and facilitates faith-based support groups for the purpose of strengthening individuals and families touched by mental illness, and Faith Friendship Ministries of Mountville, which provides residential care and housing, along with shared independent living situations for local individuals. Another sponsor is New Hope Community Life Ministry, located in Quarryville. The organization promotes healing and abundant life through Jesus Christ. Millersville University and the school’s Cy Fritz Foundation, which supports Millersville University’s cross-country and track and field programs, are also sponsors. There is a minimum fee for cyclists and walkers to register for the ride, but participants may also fundraise for a chosen

organization. “A lot of people collect sponsorships, and they ask for so much per mile,” explained Ames. She added that many of those riders then combine routes, so that they can collect a per-mile amount for up to 60 miles. According to Ames, the organization wants to encourage those who cannot be present for the ride to complete it on their own by signing up at www.nlam.org. Ames added that NLAM hopes to raise $15,000 for its general budget from the ride. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries, said that her goal is for 10 area residents to participate with the organization to raise $5,000 for Faith Friendship Ministries, and she added that those who cannot participate themselves may sponsor residents of Faith Friendship who have committed to walk in the event. “We are looking for people in the community to sponsor one of our residents,” she said. “We have people who love to walk, but they don’t have connections in the community (to gather sponsors), so if someone would like to sponsor one of them, they can do so.” Those who would like to register through Faith Friendship may visit www.faithfriendship.org. UPMC Pinnacle Receives Grant UPMC Pinnacle was one of three state organizations named to receive a PAC-MAT grant to help battle the state’s opioid addiction crisis. With PAC-MAT funding, UPMC Pinnacle will strengthen its current medicalassisted treatment (MAT) and case management services to patients within the health system’s outpatient sites in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery, 2501 N. Third St., Harrisburg, will serve as the hub and bring together primary, secondary, and tertiary care providers, as well as community and hospital administration members, to build on an addiction treatment program that increases access to care, reduces health care costs, and improves quality. This will include increasing drug and alcohol screenings within the broader network of providers, creating a Care Map for patients to research care patterns, establishing a community network of case management support, and broadening the use of MAT throughout the region by breaking down stigmas and barriers to care. In the PAC-MAT model of treatment, an addiction specialist physician is at the center of the hub, providing expert guidance and support to primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of the state. Serving as the spokes, primary care physicians provide direct patient care, including the medication-assisted treatment prescription. Patients also are connected to drug and alcohol counseling in their communities. These grants are funded through the second 21st Century CURES grant, a $26.5 million federal grant the state received to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic by increasing access to treatment, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid overdoserelated deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment, and recovery activities for substance-use disorder. The UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery is a comprehensive addiction clinic. The center connects individuals facing an opioid use disorder to treatment through the use of medication assisted treatment. For more information, readers may visit www.upmcpinnacle.com.

Handmade From The Heart Of Lancaster

Stoltzfus-Sauder

Arts And Craft Show Set known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in For Sept. 1 And 2 By Chelsea Peifer

Weavers, spinners, painters, glass blowers, woodworkers, photographers, clothing designers, sculptors, potters, quilters, and makers of jewelry, candles, brooms, baskets, cards, iron, and leather crafts are just some of the artisans and craftspersons who will share their talents at the 31st annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. This year’s event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. For Marilyn Hobday, founder and chairperson of the Heart of Lancaster Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Forty-five of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well

Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it.” Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com.

The community is invited to the 31st annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show on Sept. 1 and 2 at Root’s Country Market in Manheim. Two hundred exhibitors, artist demonstrations, live music, food, and giveaways will be part of the two-day event. Admission and parking are free.

Season Launch Party Slated Millersville University Office of Visual and Performing Arts will celebrate its 2018-19 season with a Season Launch Party in the Lyet Lobby at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. The party will feature light

Arts At Millersville Season Announced

LABOR DAY

Tickets for the Millersville University Visual and Performing Arts 2018-19 season are now available. The Ware Center in Lancaster and the Winter Center in Millersville will present an exciting line-up featuring artists from every corner of the globe. A Season Launch Party will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The free event will offer an opportunity to catch a glimpse of upcoming events. The Arts at Millersville season includes the Performing Arts Series featuring music of all genres, theater, and dance, as well as Family Fun Fest events. Club 42 showcases exciting jazz and cabaret acts in a club setting while the On Screen/ In Person film series brings compelling documentaries and filmmakers to the community for engaging conversations regarding relevant topics. University Arts includes student groups and faculty spotlights from the newly named Tell School of Music and a variety of University Theatre productions. The Performing Arts Series includes 35 events and will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 20, with jazz revivalists The Hot Sardines at the Ware Center. This series also includes theater performances such as “The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde,” a one-man show taking place on Friday, Oct. 26, just in time for Halloween. In the Atrium, the Club 42 series will feature an array of eclectic and multi-faceted jazz and cabaret artists from around the region. Along with intimate table seating, each Club event offers the option to purchase refreshments. The first Club 42 event, “Pick Up My Pieces: The Music of Willie Nelson,” will take place on Friday, Sept. 14, featuring singer Gabrielle Stravelli’s soulful renditions of Nelson classics. Family Fun Fest will continue to entertain children of all ages with events tailored to the whole family. Highlights include the return of Dan Zanes with a sensory friendly performance of Night Train 57 on Sunday, Sept. 23, and PA Ballet II performing a unique interpretation of “Prince Charming” on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. To get the best seats and discounts of the season, The Arts at Millersville will offer discount options through Sept. 6. For more details, including preseason ticket discounts and the full calendar of events, readers may visit www.artsmu.com. Tickets are available in person at the Ware Center box office and at the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, Millersville University campus on weekdays. Tickets are also available by calling 717-871-7600.
