GS And L-S Will Team Up To White Out Hunger By Ann Mead Ash
According to Amy Marburger, food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries’ food programs in New Holland, the fourth annual White Out Against Hunger held in 2018 netted more than 1,000 pounds of food for the local food pantry. REAL Life Community Services of Denver received an equal amount of food when the Garden Spot Spartans varsity football team faced off against the Cocalico Eagles nearly a year ago. This year’s White Out will be held during the football game between the Garden Spot High School (GSHS) Spartans and the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School Pioneers on Friday, Sept. 20, at GSHS, 669 E. Main St., New Holland. Gates will open at 5:45 p.m., and kickoff will be at
7 p.m. Fans of both teams are asked to bring unexpired, nonperishable food and personal care items to the game to donate to the CrossNet Food Pantry, now housed at 127 W. Franklin St., New Holland, and L-S Together of Strasburg. Those who attend the game and donate items for CrossNet and/or L-S Together food pantries will receive a free white T-shirt with blue printing that reads “White Out Hunger. “(The shirt will have) both team logos and the game date (on it), said Marburger. GSHS students will have opportunities to take part in the White Out prior to the start of the game. Marburger is working with the school to collect food ahead of time, giving students a chance to earn T-shirts that they can then wear to the game. See White Out Hunger pg 3
30th Benefit Auction And Chicken Barbecue Planned By Ann Mead Ash
To add something extra to the 30th Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue to be held at Fairmount, organizers will auction a limitededition, specially designed commemorative mug. Only one dozen sunfire red Sunset Hill Stoneware mugs, known as “The Potbelly, will be available to savvy bidders during the 2019 event. While the mugs will be special for this year, plenty of traditional foods, activities, and items, such as quilts, will be included in the event, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata. Fairmount permanently moved the barbecue and auction to Farm Crest last year because the community broke See Benefit Auction pg 12
Gathering auction items for the Fairmount 30th Benefit Auction and Chicken Barbecue are (from left) Peter Passage, Carol Swailes, and Kent Richard. This year’s auction, which will benefit the retirement community’s Sharing Fund, will be held on Sept. 14. In addition to the auction, the day will feature food, children’s activities, and a flea market.
Amy Marburger (left), food and nutrition manager with CrossNet Ministries, and volunteer Vivian Hertzler are getting ready for the annual White Out Hunger event to be held when the Garden Spot High School Spartans play the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Pioneers on Sept. 20. Gates will open at 5:45 p.m. Both CrossNet and L-S Together will benefit from food items donated at the game.
Cavod To Stage Pirate Musical By Ann Mead Ash
Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, cannot keep his enthusiasm about the group’s fall show from bubbling over. “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is such a fun show. It’s hilarious, gushed Huyard. “Audiences walk away having really enjoyed it (because it’s) such a crowd favorite. “The Pirates of Penzance will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29. First produced in 1879, the maritime musical by Gilbert and Sullivan is an energetic work focused on Frederic, played by Nolen Petosky, a young man who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate rather than a pilot. The error is the fault of Ruth, Frederic’s hard-of-hearing nursemaid, played by

White Out Hunger from pg 1 The CrossNet Food and Nutrition Center currently feeds approximately 135 area families per month. The Lampeter Food Bank is located inside Lampeter Church, and the Strasburg Food Bank is located in the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg. Both organizations are Power Packs Project affiliates. L-S Together serves about 50 families through Power Packs, according to Jenice Weaver, who oversees the program. CrossNet serves up to 70 families per week. Marburger noted that recent statistics on the poverty rate in the New Holland area highlight the need for area residents to take part in the White Out. “In the ELANCO (School District) community, 44% of (children) are considered low income or in poverty,” said Marburger, noting that based on the number of students in elementary schools who apply for free and reduced-cost lunches, that number could be as high as 50%. Readers who would like to learn more about the White Out may visit https://elancocross.org. Individuals who have questions may call 717-355-2454. More information about the LampeterStrasburg organization may be found by searching for “L-S Together” on Facebook.
Basic Mediation Training Slated
The Lampeter-Strasburg High School Pioneers will take on the Garden Spot High School Spartans on Sept. 20 at Garden Spot. During the game, representatives of L-S Together and CrossNet Ministries will accept donations of food items to help stock area food pantries as part of the White Out Hunger event.
Train to Resolve Conflicts: Basic Mediation Training will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 3, through Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Eastern Mennonite University - Lancaster, 1846 Charter Lane, Lancaster. Trainees will be introduced to the mediation process and its benefits in both their personal and professional lives. Communication and conflict resolution skills will be taught throughout the course, and role play tactics will be used to help practice trainees’ newfound skills. Par-
ticipants will learn and practice communication methods, the mediation process, and ethics. There is a training fee, with scholarships available. Registration fees include training materials, lunch, and refreshments. Readers may register at www.advoz.org/training or by calling 717-397-2404. Early bird registration will end on Friday, Sept. 6. CLEs are available for attorneys and CEUs for social workers, professional counselors, and marriage/family therapists.

Marburger is hoping a number of area students and parents will attend the game and take part in the W hite Out effort. “It’s youth football night, which is a huge motivation for people to earn the free T-shirts we will be giving away,” explained Marburger. On youth football night, members of the Garden Spot Midget Athletic Association football teams will be at the field with their families. CrossNet and L-S Together are currently in need of specific items, including canned tuna, canned chicken, canned pastas, stew, chili, canned fruits, and spaghetti sauce. In addition, CrossNet needs pancake mix, pancake syrup, all types of pasta, jelly, stuffing mix, boxed potatoes, shampoo, body wash, and deodorant. According to Marburger, the pantry can especially use laundry detergent and personal care items, including toilet paper and feminine hygiene products, along with paper towels. “People may not realize that food stamps don’t cover those items,” noted Marburger. In addition to food and toiletry items, monetary donations and checks made out to either ministry will also be accepted at the event.

Plant Preparation: Winterizing The Garden
HOMEOWNERS! • Basements • Backfill • Storm Water Systems • Sewer Systems • Retaining Walls • Grading • Driveways
Narvon, PA
Jesse Zook • 717-587-1377
notes that perennials are the easiest plants to prepare for winter, as they require just a little cutting back and mulching to be safe from cold weather. But no two perennials are alike, so homeowners should consult their local gardening center for advice on how to prepare their particular perennials for the coming months. The steps necessary to care for annuals as the weather grows colder depend on which type of annuals - cool- or warm-climate the homeowner has. Cool-climate annuals should be covered with polyspun garden fabric when light frost is in the forecast. In addition, Better Homes and Gardens
recommends pulling dead annuals and adding them to a compost pile after a killing frost. Any annuals that developed fungal disease should be discarded. Homeowners should mulch annual beds with a three- to four-inch layer of chopped leaves or similar materials, spreading the mulch only two inches thick over self-sown seeds they want to germinate in the spring. Warm-climate annuals also should be covered with polyspun garden fabric when light frost is expected. Seeds of cold-hardy annuals can be planted for extended winter bloom, while gardeners also can collect seeds of
warm-weather plants that will breed true to type. Even though the focus is winterizing, Better Homes and Gardens recommends that gardeners continue to weed and water their plant beds and plants while also keeping an eye out for pests. If organic mulch has decomposed or thinned out, replace it with a new layer. Get Busy Gardening! notes that the bulbs of tender plants like dahlias and tuberous begonias can be dug up and overwintered in their dormant state. All dead foliage should be removed after the bulbs have been dug up, and the bulbs should be allowed to dry out a little before being stored. Container gardeners can overwinter their tender bulbs in their pots inside, but they should be sure to remove the plants’ foliage and store them in a dark, cool place that maintains temperatures above freezing. Winterizing may mark the end of gardening season, but it is an important task that can ensure a healthy, beautiful garden in the next spring, summer, and fall.
It’s Not Hard: Weather-Proof Your Hardwood Floors Wood floors can improve the beauty and function of many rooms in a home. Even though wood floors are durable and new protective treatments help seal out many of the things that may have damaged floors in the past, homeowners still need to prioritize protecting their hardwood floors. Certain seasons of the year can
be harsher on wood floors than others. For example, seasons characterized by moisture and precipitation, particularly the early spring, the winter, and the fall, can be hard on wood floors. The experts at ServiceMaster Clean say that cold, snowy days can damage wood floors, and Lumber Liquidators agrees that winter weather can be particular-

For the majority of gardening enthusiasts, gardening is a warmweather activity. While some people live in climates that make it possible to enjoy gardening year-round, those who don’t may lament the end of the gardening season. Winter might not be conducive to gardening, but the arrival of cold weather does not necessarily mean a gardener’s work is done until the following spring. Taking steps to protect plants from winter weather is an important part of maintaining a healthy garden that thrives from year to year. Timing is of the essence when winterizing a garden. The online gardening resource Get Busy Gardening! advises gardeners that the best time to winterize is after the first hard freeze in the fall. A hard freeze occurs when temperatures dip below freezing overnight. When that occurs, annual plants and vegetables are killed off, and perennial plants, which grow back year after year, begin going dormant. Better Homes and Gardens
ly harsh on flooring. With proper care, however, hardwood flooring can survive rain, snow, and cold weather. Homeowners seeking to protect their floors during all four seasons can follow several key steps to keep floors looking beautiful. Clean up the salt Salt that keeps sidewalks and streets clear of snow and ice inadvertently gets tracked inside a home. Hard chunks of salt can scratch wood floors, and, if left to sit, that salt can eventually cause white marks and other stains. Routinely vacuuming and sweeping up salt is necessary to protect wood floors. Invest in shoe storage Wet or snowy boots can create puddles around the house. Place a special mat or tray by the front door where wet shoes can be kept. A bench in the entryway makes it easy for residents and guests to remove their shoes until it is time to go back outside. Use water-wicking mats Homeowners will probably need a few extra mats around to tame errant drips and to wipe their
shoes on. Any entrance that might be used by people or pets should be protected. Try to avoid petroleumbased, rubber-backed mats, as they could discolor the wood floor. Control humidity indoors Cold, dry air in a home can be problematic because the moisture in the wood can eventually evaporate into the air. Heat will suck the moisture from the flooring, causing it to shrink, creak, splinter, and become more brittle. Think about investing in an in-line humidifier for the home’s HVAC system, which can keep a moderate amount of humidity in the home. Hardwood floorboards are installed to accommodate minor temperature and humidity fluctuations. This is typically a range of between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit with a relative humidity range of 35% to 55%, advises ServiceMaster. Use the right cleaning products Avoid excessive water to clean wood floors, and select soaps that are specially designed for wood flooring. Consult with the flooring manufacturer for a list of detergents that are safe to use.

Stay Safe While Removing Fallen Leaves Adding Color To
close to the body and keep one hand near the top of the rake for better leverage. Use the proper gear A leaf rake fans out like a triangle and comes in various widths. Choose a lightweight material that can be easily maneuvered. A metal rake is for stones and dirt and should not be used for leaves. To get between bushes, a smaller version of a leaf rake, called a shrub rake, should be used. Wear protective gear Anyone raking or leaf blowing should protect their eyes against debris. They also may consider using a mask to prevent inhalation of leaf mold and other particulates. Gloves can protect hands from blisters. Follow manufacturers’ directions Read the instructions for powered leaf blowers, and
never modify the device in an unauthorized way. Use a tarp and lift wisely Rake leaves onto a tarp that can be dragged to a garbage pail or to the curb for municipal pickup. For those who must lift bags of leaves, do so by bending at the knees, not from the waist. Wear sunscreen Even though temperatures are cooler in the fall, the sun’s rays are still harmful. People should also take frequent breaks to rehydrate. Use a secure ladder When removing leaves from gutters, be sure the ladder is sturdy and secure. Consider having a friend serve as a spotter, holding on to the ladder to offer greater security. Do not overextend to stretch for leaves. Listen to the body’s signals If sharp or dull incessant pains occur at any time during leaf cleanup, stop working.

If you think that colder weather means the end of beautiful garden colors, think again. There are plenty of cool-season flowers and other plants that can add a pop of color to brighten drab days. These flowers provide color right when many people need it most. Homeowners who live in climates marked by cold winters can select plants that offer color without flowers, including cabbages and kales, which can survive most cold winters and lend an interesting texture to a winter landscape bed. Camellias are a type of flower that bloom in fall and winter in hues of red, pink, coral, white, and more. The plants are evergreen and will grow from shrubs or small trees when fully established. Hardy varieties may be able to withstand the chill of winter. Of course, no list of winter’s colorful plants would be complete without holly, which offers an eye-catching display of evergreen leaves and bright red berries, though sometimes the berries are golden. For more ideas, visit a local garden center to learn about plants that can add vibrant color to a landscape during autumn and into winter.
Mold and mildew are not only unsightly, but unhealthy. These fungi grow readily in damp areas and are found in the air breathed both indoors and outside. If left unaddressed, mold and mildew can threaten the health of a home’s inhabitants. Mildew is a type of mold that remains relatively flush with the surface it grows on. Other molds can grow puffy in appearance. Molds serve the purpose of destroying organic materials, but in high amounts, these microorganisms can cause respiratory problems, sinus congestion, throat irritation, headaches, and other issues, particularly when mold grows unchecked indoors, says Better Homes and Gardens. As a result, it is essential to address mold before it becomes problematic. According to Polygon, a drying technology and temporary climate solutions company, the wet season in winter is when molds often grow and expand. Mold can break down the integrity and strength of the surfaces where it grows. Homeowners can employ the following strategies to prevent mold growth: · Keep all surfaces clean, using proper cleaning products. Diluted bleach solutions are highly effective at killing microscopic
Fall Lawn and Gardening To-Do List strip all leaves and freeze for storage during winter. Consider mums Chrysanthemum plants are perennials. While they look beautiful in pots, if planted, maintained, and winterized, they can bloom every fall. Fertilize the lawn Fertilizing in autumn helps ensure grass will stay healthy throughout the winter.
Add mulch and compost to the garden Replenish spent soil with mulch and compost so garden beds will be revitalized for spring planting. Clean and store equipment Clean, sharpen, and oil all equipment, storing lawn and garden tools properly so they are ready for spring and not lying out all winter.

Pamper perennials As annuals and perennials start to fall back, mark the spots where perennials are located so they can be easily identified later on. This way, when gardeners are planning spots for spring bulbs or other spring layouts for next year, perennials won’t be overlooked or covered over. Prune shrubs and hedges Look at shrubs, hedges, and trees and cut out dead or diseased wood. Clean up borders Weed and tidy up borders and lawn edging. Install pavers or rock wall Embrace the cooler temperatures to work on labor-intensive projects, such as putting in a garden bed, retaining wall, or walkway. Remove spent summer veggies Take out vegetable garden plants that have already bloomed and borne fruit. Tidy up vegetable gardens and start to sow cooler weather plants, such as onions, garlic, beans, and sweet peas. Rake and compost Rake the leaves and gather grass clippings to add to the compost pile. Plant spring bulbs Get tulips and other spring bulbs ready for planting so they’ll burst with color next year. Dig up herbs Relocate herbs like parsley or basil to indoor gardens. Otherwise,
culation in rooms, particularly bathrooms and kitchens. An exhaust fan will help remove moisture quickly. · Fabrics that are covered in mildew and can be laundered should be carefully removed and washed in chlorine bleach and hot water. An oxygen bleach product also can be effective. · Invest in a dehumidifier that can reduce moisture in the home in problem areas, such as damp basements or garages. · Fix plumbing leaks as soon as possible. · Remove damp leaves and snow from areas around the foundation of the home. Ensure that gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and can shuttle water away from the house effectively. · Replace cracked or defective mortar in basements. · Make sure all seals on windows and doors are not compromised and are in good working condition. · Be sure an HVAC in-line humidifier is adjusted to the right setting and is not pumping too much moisture into the heated air; otherwise, the added humidity can contribute to mold. · If there is a flood or if water infiltrates a home in other ways, hire a professional service to help clean and dry the home effectively.

Raking leaves may seem like a simple activity, but, like many household maintenance tasks, it holds the potential for injury. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center advises that pain from outdoor leaf chores can range from strained back muscles to twisted knees. Here’s how to stay safe when cleaning up leaves: Consider cardiovascular health Many people do not realize that raking is a thorough cardiovascular workout. Individuals at risk for cardiovascular disease or those who have recovered from surgery may not be well enough to rake leaves. Pay attention when using a leaf blower Be cautious not to point an operational blower in the direction of people or pets, as debris can be blown about and cause injury. Stretch before raking leaves Warm up muscles beforehand so they are less likely to cramp. UPMC experts suggest taking a short walk prior to raking to stimulate circulation. Use proper raking form Much like snow shoveling, one should emphasize proper posture when raking, with legs slightly bent and weight distributed evenly. Hold the rake handle

Old homes can be charming and contain architectural elements not often seen in many modern housing developments. But what older homes may have in design appeal, they sometimes lack in updated features. While cosmetic changes are not necessarily difficult, one area of concern in historic homes and sometimes even in houses built only 40 or 50 years ago - is outdated wiring. Over time, wiring can be compromised through simple aging, pest infiltration, weather, or other conditions. Deteriorated wiring can present a shock hazard and also a serious fire hazard, warn the home renovation experts at The Spruce. Furthermore, the home improvement site This Old House advises that the amperage of old wiring may not be able to
meet the needs of all the devices used in modern homes, overpowering the circuits. This strain can cause breaker blowouts and other problems, such as overheated wires that may spark and cause fires from within the wall. Wiring often falls into the “out of sight, out of mind category. Homeowners may make allowances for inadequate electrical systems, such as running extension cords or using multiplug connectors to increase their wiring capacity. However, they may not be diligently keeping on top of upgrades needed to stay safe. Confirming that a home’s electrical system is safe is a necessary part of home maintenance. Those who have not already done so should schedule an inspection with a licensed electrician to go over their home’s wiring. The electrician can determine if any areas pose a safety risk or do not conform to local code requirements
and the National Electrical Code. Failure to meet code requirements can lead to difficulty obtaining permits to make other home renovations or difficulty selling a home later on. The electrician can also go over improvements that can enhance safety and function. Installing additional outlets, including GFCI outlets in kitchens and bathrooms, may be part of the plan, as well as rewiring a fuse box or circuit panel to allow for better flow of power around the house. Frayed wiring or underinsulated wiring also may need to be replaced. Owners of old homes should recognize possible electrical system dangers that require attention. Plus, because electrical codes change quite frequently, it is always in a homeowner’s best interest to work with a qualified electrician to keep wiring inspected and up to date.

Some homes are seemingly built for entertaining, while others may need a little help to make them more fit for hosting dinners, holiday gatherings, or evenings with friends. People who open their homes to guests may want to make some modifications to their spaces to improve the experience for all involved. Tame the clutter Look for ways to reduce clutter in rooms where entertaining takes place. Built-ins with bookshelves and cabinets can hide electronics and toys or collectibles. Focus attention on the entryway, hanging hooks for collecting coats, keys, and shoes so they do not overrun the foyer. Remove any knickknacks or other breakable items from shelves or on coffee tables to free up more space. Improve conversation seating Arrange tables and chairs to
create conversation nooks for guests who want to talk and get to know one another better. Consider moving out big and bulky sofas in favor of loveseats or comfortable chairs that will take up less room and improve flow in entertaining areas. Find the pieces you like Think about how you tend to entertain and then cater your space to those preferences. For example, a large dining table with fold-out extensions or leaves is ideal for someone who regularly hosts formal dinner parties. Renovate a room to include a small bar and club chairs for a lounge feel if cocktail parties are typical. Improve lighting Work with an electrician or designer who can offer ideas for lighting that can set the mood for entertaining. Rooms that are dull and dim can benefit from over-
head lighting fixtures if there are none already available. Task lighting in the kitchen under cabinets can make it easy to prepare food for guests. Wall sconces or focused lighting on artwork can establish a dramatic effect. Do major construction Consider working with a builder to make some changes if you simply do not have the space to entertain. Taking down a wall can open kitchens to living spaces, while adding a deck or three-season room off the kitchen or dining room can provide more space for guests to congregate. Install a guest bath Update or add a bathroom near the main entertaining areas. This will provide a convenient bathroom for guests to use and will keep them from roaming in areas of the house you would prefer they avoid.

Fires are unpredictable and can cause devastating loss of life and property. The U.S. Fire Administration states that, in 2017, there were 1,319,500 reported fires that resulted in 3,400 deaths and 14,670 injuries in the United States. Travelers Insurance company advises people to develop a comprehensive fire safety plan, which can help save lives when used in concert with functioning smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. However, the National Fire Protection Association says only about one-quarter of households actually have developed and practiced a fire-escape plan or have taken measures to prevent fires around their homes. Here are some ways to stay safe: ¡ Repair or replace malfunctioning kitchen appliances promptly. Keep working appliances clean and always use them
according to the manufacturer’s instructions. ¡ Do not leave the room while cooking. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says that most kitchen fires, which can ignite in as little as one minute, start after someone has left the room. ¡ Keep a fully charged and functioning fire extinguisher on the premises, preferably one on each floor of a home. Similarly, smoke detectors should be located on every floor of the home and near bedroom areas Ensure all smoke detectors in the home are working properly and have fresh batteries. Old or damaged detectors should be replaced with new equipment. ¡ Do not overload power strips with plugs, and have a licensed electrician inspect and suggest updates to antiquated wiring systems. ¡ Teach children about the dangers of
playing with fire. Keep matches and lighters away from children. ¡ Pull together all members of the household to come up with an effective evacuation plan. Walk through the building and inspect all possible escape routes. Mark two ways out of each room. If a window exit is recommended, have a functioning ladder that can provide a safe exit. ¡ Choose an outside meeting place that is far away from the residence, but close enough that the meeting place can be easily reached by all. ¡ Set up a buddy system so that certain members of the family will be responsible for helping elderly, young, or disabled people exit the premises. ¡ Practice identifying escape routes and institute regular evacuation drills so that everyone can function quickly should a fire occur.
Winter-Friendly Outdoor Living Space For many homeowners, the arrival of fall and winter marks an end to time spent lounging and dining al fresco on the patio. But cold air does not necessarily mean patio furniture must be packed up until flowers bloom anew in spring. In its 2017 Home Design Trends Survey, the American Institute of Architects found that consumers continue to emphasize practical features that expand the functionality of their homes via heavy investment in outdoor living spaces. The survey found that the popularity of outdoor living spaces increased by 72 percent between 2012 and 2017, highlighting just how much homeowners enjoy spending time outdoors. By taking measures to make their outdoor living spaces winterproof, homeowners can enjoy these areas of their homes even more. Cover your deck A covered deck may appear to make the space less enjoyable during spring and summer; however, covered decks can protect residents from the sun on especially hot days in summer while also making the space more functional in winter. An overhead shelter on a deck can be outfitted with heaters (and fans to provide a cooling effect in summer) and allow residents to sit outside and watch snow fall without getting wet. Plant the right trees Coniferous trees protect against wind, which can be especially harsh in winter. Homeowners can consult a landscape architect to determine where to plant the trees to ensure they are most effective. Fire up the patio A firepit or fireplace can warm up an outdoor living area, making such a space cozy even on a cold winter night. A patio with a built-in firepit can cost a pretty penny, but such an addition can withstand winter weather better than a standalone firepit, which might be vulnerable to being tipped over by winter winds. Install lighting The sun sets early in winter, so homeowners won’t be able to rely on natural light to illuminate their outdoor living spaces well into the evening like they do in summer. Heat lamps can be used to both warm and illuminate a space, serving dual, budget-friendly functions.

Last year, the Conestoga Herb Guild moved its annual Herb Fest from Boettcher House in Landis Woods to Leola. Following a successful event in 2018, president Deidre Remollino and her fellow organizers thought it would be a good idea to change things up a bit again this year. “What is new this year is two speakers,” said Remollino, who will speak on the healing benefits of herbs. Jacqueline Bilder will speak on the subject of “Dillightful Herbal Hacks.” Remollino will speak at 10 a.m. and Bilder will speak at noon when the 2019 Herb Fest is held on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The War Memorial Building may be found along Route 23 about 6 miles north of Route 30. The theme for this year’s fest will be “Embrace Nature.”
Organizers of the fest celebrate all things herbal with displays and demonstrations, including a make-and-take presentation on how to make a rosemary topiary. As in the past, there will be a Christmas Corner, a Children’s Corner, and a Second-Hand Rose table featuring gently used items. Basket making demonstrations will be held as well. “There’s a little something for everyone,” noted Remollino. Additional displays will include fresh herbs, succulents, wreaths, bath products, dried herbs, and cat and dog treats. Herbal aromatherapy products, fresh and dried bouquets, potted plants and potted herbs, and herbal vinegars will also be included. The Herb Fest always seeks to educate attendees about the herb of the year. This year, the herb is anise hyssop. In addition to an educational display board, organizers plan to have tea samples made from anise hyssop. Other
food items will include a variety of herbal beverage samples and fresh baked goods. Jellies and jams will also be available for purchase. This year, the first 100 visitors will each receive a bag of free gifts, including seeds, pens, candy, and door prize tickets. Door prizes will be given away hourly. Other prizes and giveaways will include two herbalthemed gift baskets. The guild uses the funds raised by the event to purchase books on the subject of herbs to donate to local libraries, to engage educational guest speakers, and to aid local nonprofit organizations. The group, which has been in existence for nearly 40 years, meets on the second Wednesday of the month 10 months of the year at 6:30 p.m. at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association building. “We support the war memorial by having our monthly meetings and our Herb Fest here,”
Lighthouse Assembly of God Church invites middle and high school students to attend the next three Fifth Quarter events on Fridays, Sept. 20, Oct. 11, and Oct. 25, from 9:30 p.m. to midnight. Immediately following the Garden Spot High School home football games, students can travel one block over to Lighthouse Church, 105 Earland Drive, New Holland, for a free community event. The first event of Fifth Quarter’s fifth season took place on Aug. 30. Students attending will be served free food, including walking tacos, hot dogs, cotton candy, and iced coffee. Sports fields will be set up for games of flag football, Ultimate Frisbee, volleyball, and basketball. Yard games and bonfires will also be available for students to socialize and make s’mores. In the past, more than 300 students have attended the event. For more information, readers may follow @gshs5Q on Instagram or find GSHS 5th Quarter on Facebook.

entertainment history. “It’s kind of like the transition from operas to modern-day musical theater, he said, noting that the comedy is technically an opera. “At the time, the term musical theater (didn’t exist). Calling the music beautiful, Huyard noted that the vocal parts are incredibly difficult. “It’s an operetta, so the female lead is singing stuff similar to what the female lead in the ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ would sing, he said, noting that he believes the cast has the background and musical ability to make the show a success. “(These cast members are) some of the strongest vocal talents we have had here, he said. According to Huyard, the script mixes laughs with heartwarming moments and tops it off with the variety of songs. “The hilarity and comedy of the
story is encased in this beautiful music, said Huyard. “It’s hilarious, but it is also heartwarming. He noted that the timeless themes appeal to people of all ages. “There is a beautiful love story, but there are moments where you just have to laugh at these characters, he said. “Who doesn’t love pirates running around on stage making fools of themselves? Huyard reported that cast members are having fun exploring their parts. “The characters are zany and off the wall, and playing a pirate is so much fun, he noted, adding that the daughters of the Major-General are fun and quirky characters as well. Cavod’s stage space is limited, but Huyard noted that the show fits the accommodations well. “We will have a beautiful set with a dock of stained wood, fish nets,

and other nautical themes, said Huyard. Huyard hopes that members of the community of all ages will see the production. “The grandson who loves pirates is going to have a blast watching these pirates being chased by police officers, Huyard said of the slapstick scenes that should appeal to children. “Adults will love it because of the beautiful music, so it’s a great family outing, but it’s also a great date night show because it’s a romantic comedy, he added. “If you like pirates or if you love music, you’re going to love this show. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355. Center for Parent and Youth Understanding (CPYU) founder and president Dr. Walt Mueller will present “No Parent Left Behind on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. Conestoga Valley Church of Christ will sponsor the event. CPYU’s goal is to help adults and teenagers understand the media world in which they live together. CPYU helps adults work with their teenagers in appreciating what it is their teenagers like about their media and to be discerning about the negative side of media and its potential to harm. CPYU shows how to do this from a position of informed respect and also shows how to learn how to work together on the same team. Mueller has written nine books, including “Youth Culture 101; “99 Thoughts for Parents of Teenagers; “The Space Between: A Parent’s Guide to Teenage Development; “Opie Doesn’t Live Here Anymore: Where Faith, Family, and Culture Collide; “Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture: Bridging Teen Worldviews to Christian Truth; “I Want to Talk to My Teen About Movies, Music and More; and “Understanding Today’s Youth Culture. Parents, grandparents, teachers, youth workers, and anyone interested in learning about the world of today’s teenagers - especially the media culture of today’s teenagers - are invited to attend. Proceeds support the organization’s Sharing Fund to aid residents who have exhausted their financial resources. According to Peter Passage, stewardship director at Fairmount, the Sharing Fund provides $2.5 million in uncompensated care for residents annually. The 2018 fundraiser brought in more than $112,000. The day will kick off at 6:30 a.m. with a breakfast by suggested donation featuring eggs, bacon, home fries, and pancakes. Hundreds of homemade doughnuts will be available for purchase. A flea market featuring gently used items will also open at 6:30 a.m. Music by Singing Servants Quartet will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Activities for children, which will begin at 9 a.m., will include rides and games, and a barrel train will be on-site. When Dave Felty, head of the musical theater program at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), realized that this fall would mark the 10th year since the music, worship, and performing arts division of the college began to produce musicals, he knew he had to plan a fall show that would honor the accomplishment. “This felt like a great time to celebrate a little bit of every show we have done,” shared Felty. “We won’t hit every show, but we will hit most of them.” To mark the milestone, Felty has planned “Tradition!” The dinner and concert format production will feature 18 students from the worship, music, and performing arts track. Shows will be held on Friday, Sept. 27, with dinner at 6 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28, with a meal at noon and concert at 1:30 p.m. A concert will also be held on Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Those wishing to attend may purchase dinner and concert tickets for Friday evening or Saturday at noon or just concert tickets for each performance.
The 90-minute show, which will be directed by Heather Grayberg, will feature a band on the stage and a cast dressed in elegant evening wear. Felty said that the 2008-09 school year was when LBC staged “Little Women,” a show he plans to revisit during the concert. “There is some beautiful music in ‘Little Women,’” Felty said. “We will do a lot of songs from that show.” The late Stan Deen directed a number of shows for LBC early on, including “Singin’ in the Rain.” “We will try to do some dance numbers from ‘Singin’ in the Rain,’ which will be fun,” said Felty. Felty listed “The Sound of Music” and “The Pirates of Penzance” among the early shows that were staged at the school. “We are doing ‘(I Am the Very Model of a) Modern Major General’ (from ‘Pirates’),” noted Felty. When Felty joined the faculty at LBC, the musical theater program was really just getting started. “My first year was 201314,” recalled Felty. “We had three musical theater majors.” The small number did not keep Felty from staging “Seussical” at the

Felty said he plans to draw from “The Sound of Music,” “Mary Poppins,” and “The Music Man,” among other shows that have been featured at the school. “This will be music that people will recognize for the most part,” he noted. Displays of antique cars and tractors, period crafts, children’s activities, homemade foods, a Civil War encampment and more will be featured at the 43rd annual Hay Creek Festival being presented by the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association (HCVHA) at Historic Joanna Furnace Iron Works, 1250 Furnace Road, Geigertown. There will also be an ironmaster’s pancake and sausage breakfast offered on Sept. 7 and 8 from 8 to 11 a.m. The festival is designed to showcase life in a rural industrial iron-making village in the 18th and 19th centuries. “Our festival encompasses everything from Colonial to Victorian times,” explained Mark Zerr, HCVHA executive director. Featured throughout the threeday event will be an Early American Crafts Area, where costumed interpreters will demonstrate domestic skills such as open fire cooking and bake oven demonstrations. Samples of early American foods will be available. Items for sale at this year’s Creekside Crafts Market will include redware pottery, ceramics, doll clothes, soaps and lotions, jewelry, woodcrafts, antiques and many home décor items. “These are crafts made right here in the United States,” Zerr noted. “It’s a

They can come out one, two or all three days,” Zerr said, noting that tractor and antique car parades will take place each day at 1 p.m. At the Civil War encampment, visitors will be able to chat with Civil War-era soldier and civilian re-enactors from the 69th Civil War re-enactment group, who will also offer a mini skirmish each day at 2 p.m.
For the first time, visitors will be able to see the newly preserved bosh, which is the interior lining of the blast furnace. “Joanna Furnace is extraordinarily fortunate to have one of the last remaining boshes in the eastern United States,” said Zerr. “We will have a viewing platform where people can view the bosh from inside the casting house.” Zerr noted that nearly 1,200 interpreters, craftspeople and volunteers will be part of the upcoming festival. This year, students from the Pathways Homeschool group in Bowmansville, dressed in period costume, will volunteer at the event. “(Students) will run our early American games and papermaking booths,” noted Zerr.
