CrossNet Plans Coat Giveaway By Ann Mead Ash

In 2017, CrossNet Ministries of New Holland asked area residents to donate new or gently used coats for its winter coat drive, and the community responded. “Last year, we gave away approximately 140 coats to children from infants through seniors in high school,” said CrossNet office manager Lisa Kerstetter. This year, looking to repeat the success of that endeavor, CrossNet will be accepting coats, hats, scarves, and gloves at its offices at 123 W. Franklin St., New Holland, through Thursday, Oct. 4. Donors who bring a brand-new coat to contribute to the drive will be entered to win a $50 gift card. The gift card drawing will be held following the end of the drive. CrossNet will hold its annual coat giveaway at the CrossNet Youth Center, See CrossNet pg 4

NLAM Banquet Will Feature “Journeys Of Hope” Theme

“We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services, when he spoke recently at a meeting of the New Holland Area Kiwanis Club. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. According to Connie Dienner, executive director with Cavod, the idea for the program grew out of caregiver Deb Bacon’s requests for a class. “(Bacon) brings her clients to Cavod, and she has asked us to (hold dance classes),” explained Dienner, who added that seeing the value in each person is a foundational concept at the academy. “Cavod is a perfect place for (this) program because of the loving and accepting atmosphere here,” said Dienner. “No one will be treated differently. Intro to Dance will delve into a number of types of dance, including jazz, modern, and hiphop, but Haney said she plans to start with a focus on ballet. “Students will come in, stretch, work at the bar practicing positions and steps, (perform) some technical work, and then do acrossthe-floor progression type steps,” said Haney, who added that she plans to end each class with some imaginative guided dance to reinforce freedom and joy of movement. Dienner noted that the students with developmental disabilities taking private lessons have enjoyed their accomplishments. “The students ... here have just blossomed,” she said. “We thought, ‘Let’s start a program where they can learn to dance at a (comfortable) pace, with a goal of transitioning students into another class as their capabilities improve.’” Dienner noted that a limited number of scholarships are available to cover half of the cost of a class. Classes began the week of Aug. 27, but it is not too late to register. Readers who would like to sign up or apply for a scholarship may visit www.cavod academy.com. assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social workers, and mentor volunteers from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of

the families living in the shelter have fled abusive situations. “Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among women nationally,” said Hoffer, who added that Good Samaritan receives referrals from local churches that appreciate the shelter because it is safe, secure, and staffed by professional social workers. Good Samaritan Services is a private, nonprofit, faith-based

organization that is fully dependent on the community for support. “It costs $23 per day per person to provide shelter, food, supplies, and case management services,” said Hoffer. “We pride ourselves on being efficient.” Hoffer noted that the organization applies for grants and holds several yearly fundraising events. “About 25 percent comes from grants and about 25 percent from fundraising,” he stated.

- Garden Spot Edition - September 12, 2018 - 5

Adding lighthearted moments into the lives of those it serves is also a goal of Good Samaritan. “We try to have fun,” said Hoffer. “We hold a Christmas party, and once a year, we visit a miniature horse farm to take the (children and their mothers) for an outing,” added Hoffer, who lauded an Ephrata bakery that provides birthday parties for the children at the shelter. Hoffer noted that one of the

most valuable resources Good Samaritan can give to its clients is time. “We have professional social workers to help clients achieve their goals, but that takes time,” said Hoffer. “There are often a number of issues (involved) that can’t be fixed in a week. We give people the gift of time.” Readers who would like to know more about Good Samaritan Services may visit www.goodsamservices.org.

Yard Sale from pg 1 By Ann Mead Ash

Funds raised by space rentals at the annual Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 yard sale are donated to the IU 13 Social Work Fund, which can cover a variety of needs of IU 13 students. “Social workers (recently) used the funds to help a family facing eviction,” noted Carrie Bruey, IU 13 supervisor of autism solutions, which provides individualized psychological supports for children with autism. The 2018 sale, which is the

fund’s largest benefit event, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Burle Business Park on New Holland Avenue in Lancaster. The rain date for the event will be Saturday, Sept. 22. In 2017, the sale attracted nearly 60 vendors. The number of vendors taking part in the fundraiser has grown steadily since 2011, when the first sale was held. Most years, at least 50 vendors have rented spaces at the event. According to organizers, vendors will offer personal

care products, makeup, crafts, jewelry, DVDs, produce, and handmade items, among others. Bruey noted that vendors selling a variety of merchandise take part in the event, including representatives of home-based businesses and families selling outgrown clothing, toys, and other household items. In addition to raising funds from space rentals, IU 13 employees sell food at the event. This year’s menu will include breakfast sandwiches and coffee in the morning and hot dogs, baked goods, and cold beverages at lunch time. Approximately 200 IU 13

employees help organize the yard sale. About 40 employees are onsite on the day of the event and many more donate food to be sold. Helping families avoid eviction is just one way the Social Work Fund aids students. The fund also helps cover clothing costs or medication for IU 13 students. Funds may also be used to cover field trip expenses, school supplies, school lunches, bus passes, groceries, gas, and other necessities. Bruey noted that last year’s yard sale raised nearly $3,000 for the fund. Other fundraisers that the group holds during the year include pretzel sales, a dressdown day, a dinner at a local

served at 6:30 p.m. A silent auction, which will open at 5:30 p.m., will feature up to 30 items. “Our silent auction is based on the best of Lancaster County,” said Ames, who noted stays at local guesthouses and passes to area attractions will be among the items up for bids. “We will have two extravagant chocolate baskets,” she added, noting that organizers have put an emphasis on quality rather than a quantity of items on which to bid. The keynote speaker for the dinner will be Catherine P. Downing, author of “Sparks of Redemptive Grace,” which recounts her experience with a family member struggling with mental illness. Downing’s topic will be “Sparks of Redemptive Grace: Seeking and Seeing God Amid a Loved One’s Mental Illness.” “Downing and her husband have walked this journey with their now-adult son who struggles with bipolar disorder,” explained Ames. Downing is a trained teacher with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Family-to-Family classes. She is a

former missionary who currently works with faith-based nonprofit organizations as a communications consultant. She has been lauded for her compassion and vulnerability in sharing her story. Special music for the event will be provided by Peggy Grabowski, and local radio personality Lisa Landis will serve as master of ceremonies. Ames noted that a plated meal, with entrée options including pecan-crusted salmon, chicken cordon bleu, and a vegan gluten-free option of quinoa black bean saute, will be served along with salad, bread, and beverages. Ames added that a choice of desserts will include chocolate cake and a seasonal option. A freewill offering will be received at the dinner. “Our goal is to raise close to $51,000,” said Ames, who added that sponsorship options are available. Tickets are required to attend and may be purchased by visiting www.nlam.org or calling the NLAM office at 717-390-4891. Reservations will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 21.

For nearly a decade, the team has been the recipient of funds raised by Millersville residents John and Phyllis Koenig through the Muddy Run Canoe and Kayak Race. The Meanses typically use the race proceeds for training seminars hosted primarily by law enforcement groups that use bloodhounds every day. “Bloodhounds are highly active and intelligent dogs, John related. “(Their) scent tracking is so good that the testimony of a bloodhound’s man-trailing results is accepted in almost any court. This year’s Muddy Run Canoe and Kayak Race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, on the lake at Muddy Run Park, 172 Bethesda Church Road W., Holtwood. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., the race meeting that is mandatory for all entrants to attend will be held at 10:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 10:45 a.m. Three courses of distances ranging from 1.25 miles to 5.5 miles have been established. More than 60 classes are available to accommodate racers of all skill levels and types of watercraft. Phyllis noted that a few classes have been added to the recreation category to reflect changes in kayak and canoe components and design. Awards for the top three finishers in each class will be distributed after the race, and drawings for door prizes will be held as well. Additionally, a kayak tug-of-war will

Strasburg residents Al and Patti Means have been working with bloodhounds since 1988, when they picked up their first man-trailing hound. “That 40-pound dog had two people to train, Al recalled. “There was no one around here who was doing search and rescue. He taught us a lot. Al and Patti launched Red Rose K-9 Search and Rescue in 1989 and have provided their services free of charge to the community for 30 years. Along the way, they have trained and worked with a total of 12 dogs; the current and final two are Chip, age 3, and Reuben, age 4. Although Al and

Garden Spot Rally Falls Short Against Palmyra by Ara Grigorian

The Garden Spot football team came up short in what proved to be a thrilling second half game at home on Friday night. In a non-league contest with Palmyra, the Spartans scored three touchdowns in the second half, but couldn’t overcome a halftime deficit. The Cougars (3-0) left New Holland with a 44-20 win. Palmyra’s’ 23 unanswered points in the first half resulted in the Spartans making some halftime adjustments. “We just kept playing our game, getting the guys to clean up some of the mistakes from the first half,” said head coach Zach Fulmer. “We did that in our first game, which was against Daniel Boone. “We just need to do that for an entire game next week,” added Fulmer, whose squad begins Section Two play this week against visiting Solanco. “Nothing easy is left on our schedule,” Fulmer remarked. Palmyra scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. Grant Haus scored on a five-yard quarterback keeper. Caleb Hawkins scored the first of his two TD’s later in the period - a 21-yard rushing TD. Following a Palmyra safety, the Cougars added to their lead on a 44-yard scoring pass from Haus to Casey Shugart. Garden Spot struck early in the sec-

ond quarter as Jesse Martin broke through for a 70-yard dash to the end zone. Hawkins capped a Cougars’ drive with his second rushing touchdown of the game, making it 30-6. Haus connected on an 83-yard TD pass to Sean Carter to increase the deficit. “We just ran the ball well in the second half,” said Fulmer, whose offense still had plenty of life left before the final whistle. Zackary Ringler hauled in two touchdown receptions from Martin and Giannicola Ferrarelli converted the PAT kicks. “Zack is our tight end. He has been the main target so far this year,” Fulmer said. Sophomore running back John Dyke also came through in the tough running game the offense demonstrated. “I think John finished with 90some yards and Jesse Martin ran for over a hundred yards - most of it in the second half,” Fulmer added. Garden Spot accumulated 215 rushing yards to 142 by Palmyra. As for Solanco, Fulmer said the Spartans expect a relentless ground attack. “They run the ball a lot,” he said. “That’s all they do. They’re a good football team and we need to slow down their rushing attack.” GIRLS SOCCER Garden Spot’s first victory of the season was a gradual process, one could say. The Spartans suffered backto-back losses by the identical score of 3-0 to Governor Mifflin and Elco.

Garden Spot’s Payton Shirk battles Elco’s Ryelle Shuey for the ball during a nonleague contest in New Holland last Tuesday.

They played a tougher and much more organized game at Donegal on Thursday, losing 1-0 before returning home and defeating Solanco 3-1 on Saturday morning. “I think we have a tough schedule right out of the gate,” said head coach Harry Klinger. “Governor Mifflin, a Quad-A team, is one of the toughest teams in the area and Elco is a strong team who has won the section title a few years in a row.” The Raiders scored 14 minutes into the match. Katelyn Rueppel scored her second goal of the game 15 minutes into the second half before Ryelle Shuey cemented the victory with the team’s third goal in the 63rd minute. Tanisha Grewal registered two assists. “We played better against Donegal, but I think we could have played better,” Klinger remarked. “We were a little lethargic.” Despite the 3-0 losses, Klinger was Photo by Stef Supplee The Spartans’ Brielle Eby races Elco’s Cassie Johnson to the ball high on his defense and senior goalduring a nonleague meeting at Garden Spot last Tuesday. keeper Elizabeth King.

“We gave up three goals in each of the first two games,” he said. “She couldn’t have saved any of them - all top-shelf goals in the corners. I think we’ve played well defensively,” In the Solanco game, all of the scoring took place in the second half. Mataya Hostetter scored 17 minutes into the second half. Payton Shirk scored one minute later and made it 3-0 with five minutes left in the game. Hostetter and Kassidy Hollinger each notched an assist while King made three saves. “We had two goals off corners,” Klinger explained. “Payton, our center back, scored both of her goals on corners. We moved her up on several corners. She struck one in with her foot and headed in the other one.” Things don’t get much easier for the Spartans’ schedule as the season goes on. “We play Ephrata for our first section game and a lot of people think they can win the whole league,”

Looking for sports coverage for another school?

Klinger commented. “We have 10 section games and seven non-league. Each of the non-league teams were district playoff teams last year.” GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Garden Spot has served up three straight wins to start this 2018 season, including two victories over Section Two rivals. On Tuesday evening, Garden Spot outlasted Ephrata in a tough home match, defeating the Mountaineers 25-22 in the opening set, cruising to a 25-11 victory in the second set before finally serving up match point in the 32-30 third set thriller. “That was an intense back-and-forth game with tough defense on both sides,” head coach Mark Leaman commented. “Ephrata was very scrappy.” Thursday’s victory was also on the Spartans’ home court as they topped Lampeter-Strasburg 25-22, 25-10 and 25-16. Returning seniors Shawna Zeiset, Sarah Shirk and Kristin Sims have certainly done their share to help the squad set out to a 3-0 start. In the L-S match, Zeiset poured in 16 kills while Shirk distributed 27 assists. Sims had two solo blocks while junior libero Kelly Martin registered 10 digs. “Kelly is filling big shoes,” Leaman said, referring to 2017 all-league libero and Garden Spot alum Sam Martin. “She’s in charge of communication on the floor and is doing a great job being aggressive.” In that marathon match with the Mountaineers, which came four days following a season-opening

3-0 defeat of Penn Manor, Zeiset put up phenomenal numbers again - five aces and 12 kills. Olivia Usner drilled five service aces as well while Shirk led the team with 37 assists and tied Martin for the team lead in digs with 16. Sims registered two blocks. “Olivia Usner has gotten off to a great start,” added Leaman. “All of these girls have been playing club volleyball and they’re starting to come together. They have high volleyball IQ.” Garden Spot’s next 10 matches include eight against Section Two rivals. “The last two years Elizabethtown took it,” Leaman noted. “I think the play level is up all around in our section.” CROSS COUNTRY Garden Spot took on AnnvilleCleona and Octorara in Tuesday’s cross country race at A-C. In the boys’ competition, the host Dutchmen edged the Spartans 26-29 while the Spartans went on to defeat the Braves 15-45. In the girls’ race it was another close one between the home team and Garden Spot as Annville-Cleona prevailed 26-31. Meanwhile, Octorara came out on top 20-38 over Garden Spot also. Octorara’s girls featured three of the top five finishers in the race. The other two spots belonged to Garden Spot runners Cloe Martin and Amanda Coblentz, who finished third and fifth, respectively, with times of 23:47 and 24:14. Senior Jeremy Rissler and junior Adam Horning paced the Spartan runners in the boys’ race. Rissler took second overall at 19:37 while Horning finished third at 19:52.
